Abstract:Up to now, the installation capacity in China is more than 440,000MW. It stimulates cable manufacturing industry and operating system. In 2004, increasing power lines of 330kV and higher was 11,421km, including 1,857km DC, and in 2005, the power line of 220kV and higher is 25,000km. Transforming capacity is about 140,000MVA. It predicates that Chinese power wire and cable industry has entered into a period of rapid progress. XLPE cable become a main part of power cables not only in middle and low voltage systems, but in high voltage ones of 220kV and higher. 500kV XLPE cable was produced in the year of 2004, and large-length submarine XLPE cable was produced and served in the power system in 2002. Comparing with those, high-voltage cable accessories have not been produced as a complete set, even though new materials and configuration for the accessories are under research. The HTS cable of 35kV has been manufactured and passed through the certification test in 2004. There are two independent power grid management systems. Cable construction and operation system also change remarkably. There are mainly 3 systems of underground cable layings in China, i.e. the pipeline, trench and tunnel. Considering the cost and time limit for a project, pipeline laying is a better method. It has been widely used during the process of power cables to be laid underground in cities of China, and it is also the tendency in the future. The cable insulation on the bridge and under the water has new requirement not only for construction and properties of the cables, but also on installation technology. Large-length cables on the bridge and under the water has been installed and operated successfully. All of these improved the technology progress on Chinese cable manufacturing and operating. Technical failures and accidents also occurred during the cable operation, which show that there are deficiencies in the progress of Chinese cable technology, including cable breakdown due to the insulation quality, water immersion, especially in the joints. Fire-proof technology is very important to cable system as well. Biological infestation for cables should be paid attention also, for example, termite and rat. All of these are introduced in this paper in detail.
