Abstract:Through a review of the relevant literature from CNKI's Chinese Academic Periodical Internet Publication Database and its China Important Newspapers Database, this paper analyzes the coverage of the Wenzhou Earthquake. It answers the following questions: Did the reports following the disaster have any defining patterns or characteristics? What public concerns were reflected in the reports? Which spheres of society will feel the lasting effects of the earthquake? The goal of the essay is to discover what lessons can be drawn from the earthquake disaster and to understand systematically and holistically the significance of the earthquake for Chinese people.

Abstract:5.12 Wenchuan earthquake occurred twelve days after the issue of The Regulation of the People's Republic of China on the Disclosure of Government Information.The domestic media and press broke through from the old ways of reporting sudden disastrous events.The news was released at the earliest time possible and the coverage became more open.Actively and fully engaged in this event,press and media played well their parts in publicizing information and integrating social concerns.The press reports also demonstrated professionalism and humanistic care.However,certain aspects of press involvement in this earthquake event deserve rethinking,such as how to handle time efficiency against depth of coverage and job obligation versus human care.

Abstract:A questionnaire survey of 702 people in Beijing was conducted in order to investigate the change of the disaster cognition of the public and their views on risk communication after the 2008,Wenchuan,Sichuan,MS8.0 earthquake.Through score calculation and correlation analysis,we got the following conclusions.Firstly,respondents paid high attention to Wenchuan Earthquake,and the media they mainly depended on were TV and internet.Secondly,the respondents' knowledge of disaster emergency and disaster prevention was limited and it did not improved after the Earthquake.On the other hand,their disaster-prevention awareness and behavior tendency were improved.Thirdly,the individual characteristics of respondents such as education level,gender,and experience of disaster would have effect on their cognition of natural disasters.Based on the survey,we propose the suggestion of risk communication.On one hand,the official media,as the trustful and important information source of the public,should report something that could make the public recognize the importance to construct the system of the understandings and the skills of the disaster-prevention.On the other hand,according to the respondents' suggestion,the government should enhance publicity of the severe disasters frequently-occurred in Beijing,such as the sandstorm,the snowstorm,and the floods.

Abstract:Based on content analysis of New York Times reports on Wenchuan earthquake,the research discovers that "reasons for the collapse of schoolhouse","disaster relief","human right" and"post disaster reconstruction"are top issues of this crisis report.Taking this agenda as the focus of others’perception,the writer makes cross examination of Chinese government performance in this crisis management,and explores the success and the failure of government behavior in crisis communication.The conclusion is that although there exist some biased reports by New York Times,more improvement on the technique of Chinese government crisis communication should be addressed.Therefore,such techniques as credibility of official response,certainty of fulfilling promise,fairness on official investigation are put forward to better government performance in crisis communication.

Abstract:The Wenchuan Earthquake occurred at 14:28 on May 12, 2008 in Sichuan Province of China. It shocked the world, caused huge losses of lives and properties of people, and had immense effects on the development of economy and society in Sichuan, Gansu, Shaanxi, Chongqing and Yunnan. In the aftermath of the earthquake, the Chinese people were remarkably united as one, and conducted powerful, orderly and effective disaster relief with great efforts in the face of daunting difficulties. They achieved a considerable success in earthquake rescue and relief, under the firm leadership of the Chinese Government via the direct command of the State Council’s Earthquake Rescue and Relief Headquarters.

Abstract:After the 2008 Sichuan Earthquake, people started to pay more attention to charitable activities and to place high hopes in NGOs. Through an extensive analysis of surveys (including 465 surveys from individuals involved in the earthquake, 171 surveys from people who benefited from the charity work, and 60 surveys from the NGOs themselves), meeting notes, and interviews with involved groups and individuals, we found that most people were more than willing to donate their money and time to charity. Those who benefited from the charity work also reported high levels of satisfaction with the government, NGOs, and corporations. However, with respect to NGOs, there remains room for improvement in the areas of credibility, publicity, and transparency of information. Respecting people's distinct donation preferences, NGOs should seize this opportunity to expand the charity market and to educate and develop new volunteers. On the other hand, the government should use a service purchase mechanism to encourage NGOs' involvement in disaster area reconstruction. The government can also consider implementing measures to reward NGOs that were actively involved in disaster relief.

Abstract:Abstract. The earthquake early warning systems (EEWSs) in China have achieved great progress, with warning alerts being successfully delivered to the public in some regions. We examined the performance of the EEWS in China's Sichuan Province during the 2019 Changning earthquake. Although its technical effectiveness was tested with the first alert released 10 s after the earthquake, we found that a big gap existed between the EEWS's message and the public's response. We highlight the importance of EEWS alert effectiveness and public participation for long-term resiliency, such as delivering useful alert messages through appropriate communication channels and training people to understand and properly respond.

Abstract:This paper presents the major lessons learnt from the recently occurred devastating earthquake of May 12,2008 in the Wenchuan County,Sichuan Province. It discussed some bottle-neck questions existing in the current earthquake disaster prevention work of the China,such as low quality construction in both rural and town area,seismic hazard assessment and seismic zoning,earthquake induced geological hazard,and earthquake prediction etc.,and pointed out that the civil engineering prevention method is the best choice for the solution of reducing earthquake losses and mitigating earthquake disasters.

Positive experiences,such as,government rapid response,well prepared response plan,and support from all kinds of social forces,and suggestions for improvement,such as,effectively managing and delivering fund and materials,ensuring long-term clinical treatments for the wounded,social security network construct during local rebuilding,were all discussed.

Abstract:This paper took Wenchuan earthquake reports as an example to gave further discussion on the breakthroughs and transformations of China Disaster reports model and points out that China has experienced three kinds of disaster report models in the past 60 years: the Party-based one-dimensional model,the thing-oriented multi-dimensional objective model and the people-based holographic open model.Furthermore,the paper analyzes new breakthroughs of the people-based holographic open model:the holographic-based open report framework breaks through the closed one-dimensional report framework;the humane report breaks through the modeled report and collective presentation is transformed into individual presentation;civilian-oriented perspective is highlighted,showing the survival of pluralistic personalities and avoiding deifying heroes and publicizing leaders.On the basis of these,however,the paper also gives a reflection on the issues about breakthroughs and transformations in the Wenchuan earthquake reports.

Abstract:In this paper we characterize the perception of public in the north part of Jiangsu Province, China, towards one kind of natural disaster—earthquake based on the psychometric paradigm method. An organized questionnaire which contains the elements from this approach was administered to 300 respondents of Sihong, Xuyi and Hongze County in May 2008, shortly after the Wenchuan Earthquake and a total of 156 questionnaires were returned. Then in a second survey of July 2008, 500 respondents from the same research area were randomly chosen, with 318 questionnaires were collected. This research was designed to examine the attitudes and perceptions of people who did not directly experience the Wenchuan Earthquake. We have interested in how the attitudes and perceptions differ depending on gender, age, education and residential type as well as socioeconomic status, characteristics of seismic hazard such as social effect, benefit, controllability etc. The data collected was used to calibrate a multiple liner regression in which the demographic and risk characteristics were set as independent variables. The results indicated 28.2% of variance in the respondents willingness to accept (WTA) risk of earthquake. The results has also revealed that four variables—knowledge of risk, rarity of risk, fear of risk and trust in government have influenced the public s WTA on earthquake. At the same time, F-test was used to examine the equality of the four variables from the two surveys and the statistical processing has indicated a significant difference in knowledge of risk and fear of risk, which implied that these factors would change with time. The findings are helpful for the government to comprehend and predict the behaviors of people according to their demographic characteristics and preferences for seismic. The results revealed that the government should make the information of earthquake more available for individuals so that they could understand the direct and indirect severity of earthquake. Furthermore , a well designed communication of risks with public and effective mitigation policies are also necessary to improve public's rational risk judgment towards earthquake

Abstract:The news reports on the Wenchuan earthquake have enabled us to see how communication theories found their applications in the context of the Chinese media.A study of how they were incorporated in Chinese news reports on the disastrous accident is of realistic and academic importance.The agenda-setting theory,the Spiral of Silence,the immunization theory,and the traditional audience theory,among others,in the news reports on the earthquake,are all worth re-examining and re-thinking.As a matter of fact,these theories,as reflected in the news reports,have been "accommodated" more or less to the Chinese context of mass media.We know from a professional point of view that the exclusiveness of media agenda,the monopolization of the public-opinion market by the most privileged institution(s) of media,the over reliance on the influences of a few dominant media,and the negative audience theory,among others,are harmful to the creation of a healthy environment of the mass media.Therefore,in the news reports on serious accidents,only by setting diversified agendas and uttering multiple voices can the public interest be safeguarded.

Abstract:China has suffered from severe earthquake disasters in recent years. In order to explore the impact of severe earthquakes on public risk perception on different time scales, four surveys were conducted twice each after the severe Wenchuan and Yushu earthquakes. t tests were performed between two consecutive surveys to explore the change of public risk attitudes. The results demonstrated that after the two severe earthquakes, the public seismic risk acceptance has increased over time, and the comparison between pre- and post-Yushu earthquake illustrated that the severe disaster had more impact on vulnerable population such as females, children and low-income people. Moreover, linear regression models were employed to find the determining factors of public acceptance towards earthquake risks. It was discovered that the public perceived earthquake effect had significant negative relationship with seismic risk acceptance, and public trust towards local government had positive relationship with the risk acceptance. This study could help government to gain better understanding of public mental status and take more effective disaster preparedness measures when preventing and responding to a severe earthquake.
