A Re-Study on the Relationship between History and Theory in Marxist Philosophy(Symposium)

Abstract:Feng Ziyi points out that the theory comes out from the history, and the textual study of the history of Marxist philosophy is always a basic work in the studies of “theory”. While the studies on the history of Marxist philosophy should not be a kind of rigid hermeneutics, it must elucidate theory by a study on history. The new topics for research must be put up in the way of raising questions, and to stimulate the research on the history of Marxist philosophy by strengthening the discussion of “theory”. Nie Jingfang, combining with an analysis of the process of writing A Theoretical History of Surplus Value, points out that Marx has the most consciousness on the relationship between theory and the history of theory, and this is exactly what today’s “hermeneutics of history” needs to pay more attention to. Yang Xuegong emphasizes that the studies on Marx’s texts should correct a mistake of avoiding theory and being in favor of history by “objective compiling of history”. Only by combining history with theory in a mutual promotion, can the studies on the history of Marxist philosophy go out of a dilemma and a low level. Yang Haifeng, by revealing the methodological significance of Croce’s proposition that “all the genuine history are contemporary ones”, believes that in the current reading of Marxist literature, the texts of Marx is the object which should be re-activated, and this activation has an unavoidable relationship with the contemporary context of history and ideas.
