Abstract:The Kramers-Kronig transform is used to calculate the phase of a reflection coefficient once the frequency dependence of its magnitude is measured. The calculated values agree quite satisfactorily with the measured results, thus making it feasible to use this method in practice to determine microwave phase.

Abstract:A new numerical method - the Method of Moving Reference Point (MMRP) is proposed to calculate the phase center of antenna in this paper. This method is based on the optimized theory. Using the new method the phase centre of any kind of antennas can be obtained as long as its far field radiation expression is determined, for example the horn antenna and the log-periodic dipole antenna (LPDA). The relationship between the phase center and the phase deviation, as well as the relationship between the angle width of equiphase surface and the phase deviation can also be obtained by this method, so we can determine the fitting phase deviation as the request of engineering to choose the prefect phase center position and angle width of equiphase surface. The results obtained by this method are credible.

Abstract:Electromagnetic interference (EMI) source reconstruction typically requires accurate measurements of both near-field magnitude and phase information. In some cases, an accurate phase measurement may not be practically feasible. A phase-retrieval method based on phaseless and single-plane near-field scanning is presented in this paper. By using an interpolation technique, the original data of field magnitude used for reconstruction can be divided into two groups: the sampling and interpolation groups. Subsequently, iteration algorithm together with the singular value decomposition method is employed to reconstruct the equivalent dipole model of the EMI source. Both numerical example and measurement example are given to verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. The major advantage of the proposed method is that it can save a half scanning time and still produces a valid EMI source model. It also shows an ability to reduce some measurement errors.

Abstract:A novel photonic technique for instantaneous frequency measurement of microwave signal based on phase modulation to intensity modulation conversion is proposed and demonstrated. In the proposed system, an optical carrier is modulated by a microwave signal with its frequency to be measured through a phase modulator. The phase-modulated optical signal is then converted to intensity-modulated signals in two independent paths using a dispersive media and a frequency discriminator respectively. Since the dependence of the received microwave power on the input microwave frequency in the two paths differs, the microwave power ratio between the two paths can be used to uniquely determine the microwave frequency. The major advantages of the approach lie in that only one laser source and the bias-free phase modulator is employed in the system, which improves the stability of the system. Experimental demonstrations of the frequency measurement based on the proposed approach are presented.

Abstract:A novel multiple microwave frequency measurement scheme is proposed based on the selective conversion of phase modulation to amplitude modulation, which is realized by stimulated Brillouin scattering. The principle of this scheme is theoretically elucidated with its advantages and disadvantages discussed. Experiments are established to verify its feasibility and the results show that this scheme is competent in determining the frequency information among multiple frequency signal with very high resolution and accuracy. The maximum measurement error is less than 30 MHz.

Abstract:This letter proposes an iteration-free-phase retrieval method for directive radiators based on field amplitudes on two closely separated observation planes. Due to the small separation, local optimization suffers from converging to local minima, and global optimization consumes long CPU time. In the proposed method, the Huygens' principle and the image theory are applied on the first observation plane, and the complex-valued field quantities on the two observation planes are related through the radiation matrix. The radiation matrix is then scaled by the field amplitudes on the two observation planes. It is shown that, if the phase difference between the two observation planes is relatively uniform, an eigenvector of the scaled radiation matrix constitutes a solution to the phase retrieval problem, which achieves iteration-free-phase retrieval. The problem of convergence to local minima is thus avoided. Simulation results

Abstract:A novel technique for instantaneous microwave frequency measurement using an optical phase modulator is proposed and demonstrated. In the proposed system, a microwave signal with its frequency to be measured is modulated on two optical wavelengths at the phase modulator, with the phase-modulated optical signals sent to a dispersive element, and detected at two photo-detectors. Due to the chromatic dispersion of the dispersive element, the two microwave signals will experience different power fading, leading to different power versus frequency functions. A fixed relationship between the microwave frequency and the microwave powers is established. By measuring the microwave powers, the microwave frequency is estimated. Compared with the techniques using an intensity modulator, the proposed approach is simpler with less loss. Since no bias is needed the system has a better stability, which is highly expected for defense applications. Experimental verification is presented.

Abstract:Recently, computational microwave imaging (CMI) based on randomized measurements has been validated effective to achieve low-cost, high-resolution imaging. In this work, we present a CMI system with a phase-reconfigurable transmitarray (PRTA). The main contributions are threefold. First, a low-cost PRTA capable of achieving 1-bit, 0/ $\pi$ phase modulation is realized for optimal imaging with a minimal insertion loss of 0.5 dB. Second, a discrete-dipole approximation model of the PRTA is derived to predict the fields radiated onto the imaging plane. By doing so, the transfer matrix can be quickly established by numerical calculations, eliminating the need of time-consuming calibration measurements, and enabling real-time and flexible experimental imaging with desired imaging distance and resolution. Third, a randomly focused field illumination strategy was used for CMI in this work, reducing the interference reflections from surrounding objects and improving the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of measured signals. An experimental prototype working at 24 GHz with a 16 $\times$ 16-element PRTA was realized, showing imaging results that capable of distinguishing two objects separated by 4 mm (about 0.32 $\lambda)$ , indicating a sub-wavelength scale imaging resolution.

Abstract:The Kramers-Kronig relations are applied to three-beam X-ray diffraction to reveal the relation between diffracted intensity distributions and reflections phases. It is found that the reflection phase can be determined from the initial value of the arc-tangent of the ratio between the KK transformed and the original phase-dependent intensity distributions.

Abstract:By analyzing and calculating the phase center and equiphase surface of the antenna with the method of moving reference point, the phase center and the width of equiphase surface of pyramidal horn, and the relationship of deviation of phase between the phase center and equiphase surface are obtained in this paper. The method of compute the center of curvature of the far-field phase surface mentioned by Muehldorf et al. is a special case of this method.

Abstract:The phase-coding method for absolute phase measurement possesses a strong robustness because its codewords are encoded into phase domain rather than intensity. However, a misalignment problem arises between fringe order and wrapped phase in this method owing to random noises and image blurring, especially in the high-frequency fringes situation. Therefore, the measurement result is unavailable. To overcome this problem, an optimized phase-coding algorithm is proposed in the study. We use the sinusoidal patterns to generate two opposite binary masks, which can locate half of each codeword. Then, the K-means algorithm is used to correct the codewords errors. The accurate fringe order is obtained by merging two halves of codewords and the absolute phase is recovered afterward. The used method is experimentally verified by an established measurement system, and the results show the proposed method is robustness and efficiency.

Abstract:Microwave dielectric ceramics are pillar materials in the microwave applications, for example, resonators. However, because most ceramics possess non-zero temperature coefficients, two or more ceramics, with temperature coefficient of opposite signs, are always mixed as a multiple phase system to obtain a zero temperature coefficient ceramic. While the dielectric constant can be calculated by the Maxwell-Wagner based formula, the quality factor (Q) is usually hard to be precisely calculated by the conventional method. In this paper, basing on the classical dispersion theory, we derive a new formula for the Q calculation for the ceramic mixtures. The deviation between the calculated and reported Q, of several typical ceramic systems, is around ±5%, for the example of two phases ceramic mixtures.

Abstract:Phase noise is an important index in evaluating the performance of millimeter wave (MMW) frequency source. Because of the high frequency, it is difficult to measure its phase noise directly. So it is very necessary to find new methods for estimating it effectively and easily. In this paper, the main factors affecting phase noise of MMW PLL frequency source are analyzed, and then a new method to estimate the phase noise is presented, which is based on the comparison of the phase noise of microwave phase-locked frequency source with phase-locked intermediate frequency in MMW phase-locked loop. In order to demonstrate the validity of this method of phase noise estimate, it is applied to estimate the phase noise of 95GHz double PLL frequency synthesizer. The result shows that the theoretical estimate value is well coincident with the experimental value.

Abstract:An electrical field scanning apparatus based on a parallel plate waveguide method is constructed, which collects the amplitude and phase matrices as a function of the relative position. On the basis of such data, a method for calculating the refractive index of the measured wedge samples is proposed in this paper. The measurement and calculation results of different PTFE samples reveal that the refractive index measured by the apparatus is substantially consistent with the refractive index inferred with the permittivity of the sample. The proposed refractive index calculation method proposed in this paper is a competitive method for the characterization of the refractive index of materials with positive refractive index. Since the apparatus and method can be used to measure and calculate arbitrary direction of the microwave propagation, it is believed that both of them can be applied to the negative refractive index materials, such as metamaterials or "left-handed" materials.
Phase response reconstruction for non-minimum phase systems using frequency-domain magnitude values

Abstract:It is often more complicated to measure the phase response of a large system than the magnitude. In that case, one can attempt to use the Kramers-Kronig (KK) relations for magnitude and phase, which relates magnitude and phase analytically. The advantage is that then only the magnitude of the frequency response needs to be measured. We show that the KK relations for magnitude and phase may yield invalid results when the transfer function has zeros located in the right half of the complex s-plane, i.e. the system is non-minimum phase. In this paper we propose a method which enables to determine these zeros, by using specific excitation signals and measuring the resulting time responses of the system. The method is verified using blind tests among the authors. When the locations of the zeros in the right half of the complex s-plane are known, modified KK relations can be successfully applied to non-minimum phase systems. We demonstrate this by computing the phase response of the electric field, excited by a point dipole source inside a closed cavity with Perfect Electrically Conducting (PEC) walls. Also, the effects of simulated measurement noise are considered for this example.

Abstract:Direct phase determination of surface in-plane reflection is realized for thin films on substrates by using substrate reflections as an intermediary to enhance the coherent interaction in resonant multiwave grazing incidence diffraction in thin films. The coupling of the in-plane diffracted waves at the interface between the thin film and the substrate is essential. The intensity variation due to this enhanced interaction/coupling becomes clearly visible, thus leading to unambiguous phase determination. This opens a different way for direct phase determination of surface reflections in thin films.

Abstract:A practical method is described for the phase determination of x-ray reflections from single crystals. Considerations on the dynamical interaction in multiple diffraction and on the relative rotation of the crystal lattice with respect to the Ewald sphere reveal both experimentally and theoretically the phase dependence of the reflected intensity. Applications can be made for a direct experimental determination of phases without carrying out the complicated dynamical calculation.

Abstract:The Kramers-Kronig(KK for short) relationship is a special case of Hilbert transformation, which describes the mathematical connection of square integrable function with causality between its real and imaginary parts. In this paper, the history, mathematics and physics essence of KK relationship are introduced. Its concrete form, meaning and application in electricity, magnetics, acoustics, optics, artificial medium and optical communication are presented, including its reflection and transmission functions, electric susceptibility, dielectric constant, refractive index, electrical conductivity, electrical impedance, magnetic permeability, atomic scattering factor, adiabatic compression coefficient, acoustic refractive index, single band time domain signal, space stealth medium and various nonlinear media and so on. The influence of truncation error on the calculation results of KK integral in practical applications is analyzed. Various integral limit extrapolation methods and various subtractive KK relationships based on anchor point are summarized, including single, multiple subtractive and differential multiple subtractive KK relationships.

Abstract:The phase center of ultra-wide band (UWB) antenna is an important factor that affects its performance in the time domain. For UWB antenna applications, the phase center is required to be stable as the beam width and frequency varies at the same time. Conventionally, the phase center can be deduced according to the directional diagram, but not all antennas can be implemented this way because of their complicated structure, therefore, numerical methods are effective methods. Abstract:It has been shown that the angular correlation of the antenna can be obtained by rotating it in a reverberation chamber (RC), and the radiation pattern of the antenna under test (AUT) can be reconstructed from the measured correlation coefficients using spherical wave decomposition. However, the correlation coefficient needs to be obtained by measuring the complex-valued S-parameters in an RC, which is no longer applicable to active antenna tests where the phase information is unavailable. To solve this problem, we propose an antenna radiation pattern reconstruction method based on phaseless measurement in an RC. In this method, the power correlation coefficient of AUT is calculated using the signal amplitude received by the antenna at different angles. According to the relationship between complex correlation coefficient and power correlation coefficient of the AUT, the nonlinear least squares method is used to reverse the spherical wave coefficients and reconstruct the antenna radiation pattern. Simulations and measurements are carried out in RC and anechoic chamber (AC), which demonstrated the feasibility and applicability of the proposed method.

Abstract:A technique for rapidly detecting microwave phase has been developed which uses a spintronic device that can directly rectify microwave fields into a dc voltage signal. Use of a voltage-controlled phase shifter enables the development of a spintronic device that can simultaneously 'read' the magnitude and phase of incident continuous-wave (CW) microwaves when combined with a lock-in amplifier. As an example of many possible practical applications of this device, the resonance phase in a complementary electric inductive-capacitive (CELC) resonator has been characterized using a spintronic sensor based on a magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ). This sensor device is not limited for use only with spintronic devices such as MTJs, but can also be used with semiconductor devices such as microwave detectors, and hence offers a useful alternative to existing microwave imaging and characterization technologies.
