Abstract:Two asymmetrical, amphiphilic perylene derivatives, N -Decyl-perylene-3,4:9,10-tetracaboxylic-3,4-di(methoxyethoxyethyl)ester-9,10-imide ( D1E2 ) and N -(1-Decylundecyl)-perylene-3,4:9,10-tetracaboxylic-3,4-di(methoxyethoxyethyl)ester-9,10-imide ( D2E2 ), have been synthesized and characterized. These compounds contain one long hydrophobic chain on one end and two hydrophilic ethoxy chains on the other end. Self-assembly of these molecules in a variety of solvents has been demonstrated. Scanning electron microscopy images showed that these compounds self-assembled to various nanostructures in different solvents. The most well-defined structure was flexible nanoribbons obtained from D1E2 precipitation in methanol. The UV–vis absorption and fluorescence spectra of these compounds in solution and solid form are also reported. The self-assembled nanostructures have potential applications in optoelectronics.

Abstract:A convenient approach for the self-assembly of well-defined porphyrin nanowires in water, wherein the individual monomers do not aggregate via pi-pi interactions, is disclosed. These unidirectional and heteromeric assemblies are instead composed of robust beta-CD/adamantane host/guest interactions. A combination of surface microscopies and fluorescence energy transfer experiments were conducted on the nanowires demonstrating their stability and resistance to disassembly.

Abstract:A self-assembly technique assisted with surfactant is developed to fabricate one-dimensional (1D) nanostructure of zinc meso-tetra (4-pyridyl) porphyrin. The so-prepared nanostructure appears in a shape of hollow hexagonal nanoprism with uniform size. The length and aspect ratio of the nanoprisms is easily tunable by controlling the stoichiometric ratio of porphyrin over surfactant. The internal structure of the nanoprisms is well described by XRD. Furthermore, as a result of dispersivity and regular geometric shape, these nanoprisms can readily self-organize into an ordered, smectic three-dimensional (3D) architecture through simple evaporation of the solvent. The results should be significant in porphyrin crystallization and porphyrin application in optoelectronic device, catalysis, drug delivery, and molecular filtration.

Abstract:WOx (2 < x < 3) and WS2 nanostructures have been widely praised due to applications as catalysts, solid lubricants, field emitters, and optical components. Many methods have been developed to fabricate these nanomaterials; however, most attention was focused on the same dimensional transformation from WOx nanoparticles or nanorods to WS2 nanoparticles or nanotubes. In a solid-vapor reaction, by simply controlling the quantity of water vapor and reaction temperature, we have realized the transformation from quasi-zero-dimensional WS2 nanoparticles to one-dimensional W18O49 nanorods, and subsequent sulfuration reactions have further converted these W18O49 nanorods into WS2 nanotubes. The reaction temperature, quantity of water vapor, and pretreatment of the WS2 nanoparticle precursors are important process parameters for long, thin, and homogeneous W18O49 nanorods growth. The morphologies, crystal structures, and circling transformation mechanisms of sulfide-oxide-sulfide are discussed, and the photoluminescence properties of the resulting nanorods are investigated using a Xe lamp under an excitation of 270 nm.

Abstract:ABSTRACTIn this article, we detail the sonication‐induced self‐assembly of polymeric porphyrin and fullerenes into distinct nanorings in solution form. The formation of these trenchant superstructures was the result of the delicate choice of different assembly protocols, solvents, and polymeric tails associated with porphyrin and fullerene. In this study, the sonication supposedly directed the lateral aggregation into uniform ring formation. The sonication time was found to be the key parameter in ring formation. Furthermore, the flexibility of polymeric arms and electronic interactions of porphyrin–fullerene gave rise to synergistically enhanced molecular interactions, and this resulted in discrete morphologies. Key optical data, including the absorption maxima of the complexes, and microscopic studies attested to the nature and morphology of the self‐assembled complexes. This introduction of polymeric arms and sonication protocols in the porphyrin self‐assembly was expected to allow the easy formation of diverse morphologies. Because of the facile fabrication process and uniform morphology, the resulting composite architectures might show promising applications in drug‐delivery and advance materials. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Structural and optoelectronic properties of C60 rods obtained via a rapid synthesis route

Abstract:High purity single crystal C-60 rods with uniform dimensions are synthesized by a rapid and facile approach which can be completed over a timescale of typically a few minutes. The morphology of the fullerene product has been characterized in detail by scanning electron microscopy, scanning transmission electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy, demonstrating that the resulting materials are solid, hexagonal cross-sectioned rods with novel faceted tips. High resolution transmission electron microscopy investigations reveal that the rods are face-centered cubic packed single crystals. Vibrational and electronic spectroscopy studies provide compelling evidence that the rods are a van der Waals solid since the electronic structure of the component C-60 molecules is largely preserved. The structures obtained are found to possess novel optoelectronic properties exhibiting low energy absorption not reported in related structures and materials to date. Furthermore significant room temperature photoluminescence is obtained from the C-60 rods accompanied by a small blue shift of the spectra which is also observed for the first 'allowed' absorption transitions. Given their rapid synthesis, excellent purity, optical and charge transport properties these fullerene structures are expected to be a promising materials for nanoelectronic devices including thin film organic solar cells and photodetectors.

Abstract:The shapes and properties of self-assembled materials can be adjusted easily using environmental stimuli. Yet, the stimulus-triggered shape evolution of organic microspheres in aqueous solution has rarely been reported so far. Here, a novel type of poly(allylamine hydrochloride)-g-porphyrin microspheres (PAH-g-Por MPs) was prepared by a Schiff base reaction between 2-formyl-5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrin (Por-CHO) and PAH doped in 3.5-mu m CaCO3 microparticles, followed by template removal. The PAH-g-Por MPs had an average diameter of 2.5 mu m and could be transformed into one-dimensional nanorods (NRs) and wormlike nanostructures (WSs) after being incubated for different times in pH 1-4 HCl solutions. The rate and degree of hydrolysis had a significant effect on the formation and morphologies of the nanorods. The NRs@pH1, NRs@pH2, and NRs@pH3 were all composed of the released Por-CHO and the unhydrolyzed PAH-g-Por because of the incomplete hydrolysis of the Schiff base. However, the WSs@pH4 were formed by a pure physical shape transformation, because they had the same composition as the PAH-g-Por MPs and the Schiff base bonds were not hydrolyzed. The self-assembled NRs and WSs exhibited good colloidal stability and could emit stable red fluorescence over a relatively long period of time.
Ligand-Free Self-Assembly Of Ceria Nanocrystals Into Nanorods By Oriented Attachment At Low Temperature

Abstract:Single-crystalline ceria nanorods have been fabricated by self-assembly of ceria nanocrystals via a simple, low-temperature, and ligand-free approach. Detailed high-resolution transmission electron microscopy shows that the nanorods are formed along the [211] or [110] direction by self-organization of truncated octahedral ceria nanocrystals, sharing the {111} or {200} planes with each other, whereas the previous report shows that only the [110] direction exists in ceria nanorods. The nucleation temperature and molar ratio of Ce3+ and OH- also play key roles in the formation of ceria nanorods. Moreover, the formation mechanism was explained in detail.

Abstract:We report a simple confined self-assembly process to synthesize nanoporous one-dimensional photoactive nanostructures. Through surfactant-assisted cooperative interactions (e.g., π-π stacking, ligand coordination, and so forth) of the macrocyclic building block, zinc meso-tetra (4-pyridyl) porphyrin (ZnTPyP), self-assembled ZnTPyP nanowires and nanorods with controlled diameters and aspect ratios are prepared. Electron microscopy characterization in combination with X-ray diffraction and gas sorption experiments indicate that these materials exhibit stable single-crystalline and high surface area nanoporous frameworks with well-defined external morphology. Optical characterizations using UV-vis spectroscopy and fluorescence imaging and spectroscopy show enhanced collective optical properties over the individual chromophores (ZnTPyP), favorable for exciton formation and transport.

Abstract:Water-dispersible and fluorescent core-shell nanorods (NRs) consisting of covalently linked poly(allyamine hydrochloride)-pyrene (PAR-Py) were synthesized and used for fabricating hybrid organic inorganic NRs. The reaction between 1-pyrenecarboxaldehyde (Py-CHO) nanorods and PAH was driven by Schiff base formation and followed by NaBH(4) reduction, and caused 28% mass loss of Py molecules at the final stage (2 h). The final PAH-Py NRs contained 42% PAR, corresponding to a Py substitution ratio of 34.5%. They were uniform in size with a Py-CHO core (81.2 +/- 16.4 nm) and PAH shell (45.0 +/- 8.8 nm) fibrillar structure, and had a surface zeta potential of 53.7 +/- 5.1 mV. The PAH-Py NRs could survive after annealed at 80 degrees C or dispersed in ethanol, and showed good suspension stability in water. Because of the functional amino groups, the nanorods could act as nanoanchors to immobilize either positively or negatively charged gold nanoparticles, or as nanoreactors to synthesize gold and platinum nanoparticles in situ. Very small quenching of the fluorescence was achieved due to the isolation effect of the PAR layer. The method described here provides a new approach for modifying organic surfaces with nanoparticles and endowing them with multiple functions.

Identification of Supramolecular Structures of Porphyrin Polymer on Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube Surface Using Microscopic Imaging Techniques

Abstract:Although the supramolecular structure of porphyrin polymers on flat surfaces (i.e., mica and HOPG) has been extensively studied, the self-assembly arrays of porphyrin polymers on the SWNT (as curved nanocarbon surfaces) have yet to be fully identified and/or investigated, especially using microscopic imaging techniques, i.e., scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). This study reports the identification of the supramolecular structure of poly-[5,15-bis-(3,5-isopentoxyphenyl)-10,20-bis ethynylporphyrinato]-zinc (II) on the SWNT surface using mainly AFM and HR-TEM microscopic imaging techniques. After synthesizing around >900 mer of porphyrin polymer (via Glaser-Hay coupling); the as-prepared porphyrin polymer is then non-covalently adsorbed on SWNT surface. Afterward, the resultant porphyrin/SWNT nanocomposite is then anchored with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), which are used as a marker, via coordination bonding to produce a porphyrin polymer/AuNPs/SWNT hybrid. The polymer, AuNPs, nanocomposite, and/or nanohybrid are characterized using 1H-NMR, mass spectrometry, UV-visible spectroscopy, AFM, as well as HR-TEM measuring techniques. The self-assembly arrays of porphyrin polymers moieties (marked with AuNPs) prefer to form a coplanar well-ordered, regular, repeated array (rather than wrapping) between neighboring molecules along the polymer chain on the tube surface. This will help with further understanding, designing, and fabricating novel supramolecular architectonics of porphyrin/SWNT-based devices.

Abstract:The intricate arrangement of numerous and closely placed chromophores on nanoscale scaffolds can lead to key photonic applications ranging from optical waveguides and antennas to signal-enhanced fluorescent sensors. In this regard, the self-assembly of dye-appended DNA sequences into programmed photonic architectures is promising. However, the dense packing of dyes can result in not only compromised DNA assembly (leading to ill-defined structures and precipitates) but also to essentially nonfluorescent systems (due to pi-pi aggregation). Here, we introduce a two-step "tether and mask" strategy wherein large porphyrin dyes are first attached to short G-quadruplex-forming sequences and then reacted with per-O-methylated beta-cyclodextrin (PM beta CD) caps, to form supramolecular synthons featuring the porphyrin fluor fixed into a masked porphyrin lantern (PL) state, due to intramolecular host-guest interactions in water. The PL-DNA sequences can then be self-assembled into cyclic architectures or unprecedented G-wires tethered with hundreds of porphyrin dyes. Importantly, despite the closely arrayed PL units (similar to 2 nm), the dyes behave as bright chromophores (up to 180-fold brighter than the analogues lacking the PM beta CD masks). Since other self-assembling scaffolds, dyes, and host molecules can be used in this modular approach, this work lays out a general strategy for the bottom-up aqueous self-assembly of bright nanomaterials containing densely packed dyes.

Abstract:While tremendous advances have been made in dimensionality‐dependent performances of inorganic‐based low‐dimensional nanostructures, paradigms concerning π‐conjugated molecule‐based supramolecular nanoassemblies are relatively fewer despite their various intrinsic advantages. It is herein reported that 0D, 1D, and 2D supramolecular nanostructures of a porphyrin, 5,10,15,20‐tetrakis(4‐aminophenyl)‐21H,23H‐porphine, with a spherical, fibrous and sheetlike architecture, respectively, could be fabricated via a reprecipitation protocol. As a typical example to demonstrate their dimensionality‐dependent optoelectronic performances, it is shown that the nanomaterials could serve as photocatalysts for water remediation, where the catalytic reactivity exhibits a trend of nanofibers>nanospheres>nanosheets. The superior catalytic reactivity of the nanofibers stems from the formation of relatively well‐defined J‐aggregates with orderly and tightly organized chromophores, conferring them with strong photoinduced electron–hole transport and separation capability. The higher catalytic reactivity of the nanospheres than nanosheets results from their larger specific surface area, which facilitates efficient accessibility of photogenerated charge carriers, although the porphyrins therein form unspecific J‐aggregates with disorderly and loosely stacked chromophores. The investigation likely initiates a simple method for π‐conjugated molecule‐based 0D, 1D and 2D nanoassemblies by using the same tectons, based on which the highlighted underlying scientific insights might provide useful clues for rational design of organic‐based low‐dimensional advanced soft materials.

Abstract:For the first time we report highly luminescent CsPbBr3 nanorods (NRs) with aspect ratios around 2-10 through chemical transformation from Cs4PbBr6 nanocrystals. Detailed structural characterization shows that the NRs are cubic phase with uniform growth direction. The NRs are formed through an oriented-attachment mechanism assisted by the ligand-regulation at the water-oil interface.

Abstract:The design and engineering of the size, shape, and chemistry of photoactive building blocks enables the fabrication of functional nanoparticles for applications in light harvesting, photocatalytic synthesis, water splitting, phototherapy, and photodegradation. Here, we report the synthesis of such nanoparticles through a surfactant-assisted interfacial self-assembly process using optically active porphyrin as a functional building block. The self-assembly process relies on specific interactions such as p-p stacking and metalation (metal atoms and ligand coordination) between individual porphyrin building blocks. Depending on the kinetic conditions and type of surfactants, resulting structures exhibit well-defined one- to three-dimensional morphologies such as nanowires, nanooctahedra, and hierarchically ordered internal architectures. Specifically, electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction results indicate that these nanoparticles exhibit stable single-crystalline and nanoporous frameworks. Due to the hierarchical ordering of the porphyrins, the nanoparticles exhibit collective optical properties resulted from coupling of molecular porphyrins and photocatalytic activities such as photodegradation of methyl orange (MO) pollutants and hydrogen production.
Slow Motion, Trapping, and Sorting of Water- and Chloroform-Soluble Porphyrins in Nanowells.

Abstract:A two-step self-assembly procedure on smooth, aminated silica particles established holey monolayers. At first, single, flat-lying porphyrin tetraamides (A) were bound covalently, followed by the build-up of a rigid monolayer made of diamido bolaamphiphiles (bolas) around the porphyrin islands. "Nanowells" around porphyrin (A) bottoms with a uniform diameter of 2.2 nm and varying depths of 0.6, 1.0, or 1.5 nm depending on the length of the applied bolas were thus obtained. Oligoethylene headgroups solubilized the particles in water, ethanol, and chloroform/ethanol, and two hydrogen bond chains between the secondary amide groups prevented swelling of the monolayer. Manganese(III) porphyrinates (B) migrated from the bulk solution to the bottom of the form-stable nanowells with a speed of about 1 pm/s and were trapped there above porphyrin (A). After isolation of the (A,B) particles by centrifugation or ultrafiltration, the particles were suspended in a chloroform solution of a chlorin (C), which was also fixated irreversibly on the bottom of the nanowells. The nanowells thus contained three different porphyrins A,B,C in a noncovalent stack. The reverse sequence A,C,B was built-up correspondingly, first in chloroform/ethanol, and then in water. The "sorting" of A,B,C and A,C,B systems was characterized by visible spectra, sequence-dependent fluorescence quenching, and cyclic voltammetry of the top component. The molecular sorting method is the first of its kind and should be generally useful for the production of noncovalent reaction systems on any smooth surface.

Abstract:The self-assembly of optically active building blocks into functional nanocrystals as high-activity photocatalysts is a key in the field of photocatalysis. Cobalt porphyrin with abundant catalytic properties is extensively studied in photocatalytic water oxidation and CO 2 reduction. Here, we present the fabrication of cobalt porphyrin nanocrystals through a surfactant-assisted interfacial self-assembly process using Co-tetra(4-pyridyl) porphyrin as building block. The self-assembly process relies on the combined noncovalent interactions such as π-π stacking and axial Co-N coordination between individual porphyrin molecules within surfactant micelles. Tuning different reaction conditions (temperature, the ratio of co-solvent DMF) and types of surfactant, various nanocrystals with well-defined 1D to 3D morphologies such as nanowires, nanorods and nano hexagonal prism were obtained. Due to the ordered accumulation of molecules, the nanocrystals exhibit the properties of the enhanced capability of visible light capture and can conduce to improve the transport and separation efficiency of the photogenerated carriers, which is important for photocatalysis. Further studies of photocatalytic CO 2 reduction are being performed to address the relationship between the size and shape of the nanocrystals with the photocatalytic activity.
