Abstract:Studied are the separate influences by three different types of roll gap adjustment systems of the 3-roll mandrel mill(i.e.,the side-swing type,the pendulum type and the radial type) on wall thickness accuracy of the pipe as rolled. Comparative analyses are made with the said 3 systems as designed in terms of dynamic behavior,durability and disassembly complexity, etc., which lead to such a conclusion that compared with the other two types,the swing-arm roll gap adjusting system is in possession of better performance indexes,being a mandrel mill roll gap adjusting system with advanced comprehensive performance.

Abstract:The present investigation devices a novel X-type six-high (X-6h) mill. In addition, parametric models of different roll layouts such as the four-high (4-h), I-type six-high (I-6h), and X-6h mills are established. Three-dimensional (3D) finite element (FE) contact analysis for a strip rolling process is conducted when the mills are subjected to a constant vertical load of 65 kN. Through comparative analysis of von Mises stress, contact stress and elastic deformation displacement in three roll layouts, the rigidity characteristic of each is obtained, and it is found that the proposed X-6h mill has the largest roll gap stiffness. The influence of different roll diameter ratios on the roll gap stiffness of the roll system is investigated, based on which an optimization design model is built. Further, by taking into account the roll gap stiffness of the roll system as the optimization objective, the optimum diameter ratios of backup roll (BUR) to work roll (WR) of the X-6h rolling mill is achieved via the genetic algorithm (GA) optimization method, obtaining the optimum structural parameters of BUR and WR as well. The reliability of the proposed design is verified by manufacturing a prototype mill which produced magnesium alloy and aluminum alloy strips of high quality.

Abstract:Roll-Box is a new forming mode of producing steel tubes.In order to research the new mode,a large deformation elastic-plastic FEM model was developed by introducing objective constitutive model of rotational formula into the dynamic explicit FEM.Meanwhile,analytical method was selected to describe the surface of rollers and the corresponding contact algorithm was introduced.The roll forming process of round to square was simulated,and the change of wall thickness,stretch/ shrink ratio and stress of inner and outer surface were investigated,which provides guideline for experiment and theory to realize the new mode in workplaces.

Abstract:Based on the accuracy demands and structure characteristics of having rectangular spline on two ends,combined with production practice,the technical difficulties and key points in cold-extrusion process and die design of subsidiary transmission shaft were analyzed.Cold-extrusion process plan and one kind of subsidiary transmission shaft cold-extrusion die structure was introduced.The production practice result shows that the die structure design is generally reasonable and the products quality are stable and reliable.

Abstract:The proposed method involves the utilization of a strip roll-forming technique to fulfill the specific requirements for constructing large-scale structures in orbit and space station trusses during extraterrestrial exploration. This involves progressively rolling out a metal strip with an L+V-shaped locking edge through multiple passes of forming rolls featuring different section shapes. The process of helical locking enables the formation of a slender, spiral-shaped tube, which can be utilized for the in-orbit assembly of exceptionally large structures. The proposed approach introduces a two-step optimization method to enhance the maximum stress, equivalent plastic strain, and wrapping torque of roll-forming L+V cross-sections and wrap-forming helical tubes. The optimized sample points in the second step are established based on the optimal roll distance and roll gap obtained in the first optimal step, resulting in the determination of the optimal folding height and V-shaped angle of the L+V strip cross-section after optimization. The design of the strip wrapping configuration that follows is highly dependent on these four parameters.

Abstract:The corresponding objectives and principles of the intermediate roll contour design are proposed to improve the strip edge drop problem in the process of 18-High mill production and enhance the regulation ability on strip shape. The intermediate roll contour is designed using the particle swarm optimisation algorithm to satisfy the production requirements. The elastic–plastic coupling finite element model of roll system–rolling piece integration is established, the application effect of the new roll contour is verified, and the regulation ability on strip shape under the new roll contour is analysed. Results show that, compared with the original roll contour, the strip edge drop phenomenon is remarkably improved. The regulation ability on strip shape is evidently improved compared with that of the original roll contour. The regulation ability on strip shape of the intermediate roll shifting is stronger than that of the intermediate roll bending force under the new roll contour. Finally, combined with field data of rolling, the finite element model is verified on site. The simulation and measured values are high, and the error is within 10%. The research results can provide a good theoretical basis for the improvement of the intermediate roll contour and improvement of the regulation ability on strip shape of 18-High mill.

Abstract:3D roll-forming for high strength steel sheets is a new technology at present.Double racks gear3 D roll forming machine developed by our research group can be used to perform variable cross section roll forming for high strength steel.In the paper,a dynamic model of 8-DOF double rack gear3 D roll-forming machine is established by the method of Lagrange equation.The expression of the angle acceleration of the system response is obtained by solving the dynamic equations.Through an actual engineering example,the dynamical characters of the 3D roll forming machine are revealed.The results can support the design of 3D roll forming machine.Meanwhile,the research will play an active role in the development of control system.

Abstract:Square/rectangular steel tubes are widely used in various industry fields and their quality is related greatly to manufacturing technologies. In this study, a new roll forming technique to manufacture square/rectangular tubes from round pipes is modeled and studied with the finite element method. In the proposed forming process, the horizontal and vertical rolls are installed alternately at the forming stands along the longitudinal direction and the corresponding pass profiles are no longer closed as in conventional reshaping process. The interference between driving horizontal and vertical rolls can be prevented, and more rolls can be used as driving rolls to provide larger driving force. Furthermore, the forming rolls become reusable and can be commonly used in manufacturing the tubes with different sizes. The forming characteristics of the new reshaping process are analyzed and process is designed through comparison among different forming schemes.

Abstract:This paper describes the benefits,technical difficulties and disadvantages of the current heavy reduction solutions for plate production.For updated plate mills,this paper gives a better idea for the heavy reduction control in the rolling process.That is to keep the reduction amount constant in the front-end and back-end sections of the plate and to adopt tapered rolling with variable reduction in the middle section of the plate.This solution (already applied for a patent) can not only fully utilize the capacity of the mill motors,but also prevent difficulties in plate biting caused by the conventional heavy reduction solutions with excessive draft.This technical solution has been implemented at the 5 m plate mill plant of Baosteel,and industrial tests have proved the feasibility of it.This paper presents and analyzes the industrial test data and proves that the tapered heavy reduction technology can reduce the number of rolling passes.In addition,this paper looks forward to the future research in this area.
Analysis and Optimization of Cvc Backup Roll Contour of A 1800mm Continuous Hot Rolling Mill

Abstract:The backup rolls are used with work rolls and their service period is much longer than work rolls. The backup roll affects the control ability of the mill for profile and flatness of products and roll contact pressure. If the backup roll contour is not appropriate, there will be a non-uniform roll contact pressure and the peak value of roll contact pressure may be large. According to the actual situation of a 1800mm CVC mill, combined with the typical wear condition of backup roll, A 3D finite element model of roll system was established. The roll contact pressure is analyzed with the model, and the improvement method of backup roll contour is proposed. With the improved backup roll contour, the non-uniform level of roll contact pressure drops by 18.2% and the peak value of roll contact pressure descends by 19.1%. All these can reduce the consumption of backup roll and the risk of backup roll spalling effectively.

Abstract:Micro-channel tube is the most important component of flat tube heat exchangers. The folded microchannel tube is made of clad aluminum sheet through roll forming process, and has great advantage in the aspect of corrosion resistance over extruded tube. The folded tube's sub-millimeter channel size as well as tight dimensional precision requirement brings great challenge to roll forming process design. In this paper, the finite element model of the whole roll forming process of a ten-channel tube is established by using ABAQUS/Explicit. The deformation at different forming stands are investigated and compared with experiment. The hydraulic pressure test is carried out on the developed tube and its pressure bearing capacity is evaluated.

Abstract:The paper describes the results of implementing modified designs of the working tools of a plug rolling mill. The plug design is modified to improve the rolling of the pipe wall thickness. The design of the bottom guide tool (the inlet trough of the mill) is improved to eliminate metal ruptures at the rear ends of thin-walled pipes, as well as to reduce downtime and rejection as unfinished products. The economic indicators of the proposed designs implemented in the longitudinal rolling process are presented.

Abstract:As the main structure of launch vehicles, the forming of cylindrical parts with reinforcing ribs still follows the manufacture mode of milling, rolling and welding in the middle of last century, which has the problems of long manufacturing cycle and low material utilization. In this paper, an innovative rolling method is proposed for manufacturing cylindrical parts with external cross ribs of high performance, high efficiency and low cost. Firstly, the forming principles of the rolling method are presented. Secondly, the experimental samples of cylindrical parts are formed by rolling method. Finally, the forming defects are analyzed and optimized, and the ideal cylindrical parts with external cross ribs are formed, which proves the feasibility of the rolling method.

Abstract:Background: The general counter-roller flow-forming (CRFF) process rarely considers the roller's offset position for the symmetric rollers. However, the rollers' offset position can regulate the tube shape, force, and other features. Studying the novel asymmetric CRFF process, which is the CRFF process with the rollers' offset position, is essential. Methods: The influence of the rollers' offset position, the tube blank thickness, thickness reduction on the material deformation, flow-forming force, final tube middle radius, and thickness in the CRFF process are studied using AA5052 aluminum tube experiments and numerical simulation. Result: The final tubes with three tube blank thicknesses, four thickness reduction, and four rollers' offset positions were obtained by the symmetric and asymmetric CRFF processes. Conclusions: AA5052 aluminum alloy tube can be made by the novel asymmetric CRFF process using a small rollers' offset position (-17.5-0%). Different rollers' positions could change the tube's middle radius. With negative rollers' offset position, the outer roller force is larger than the inner roller force. The force differences increase with the increase of tube blank thickness, the increase of thickness reduction, and the decrease of rollers' offset position. The asymmetric CRFF process helps design and construct large tube flow-forming equipment.

Abstract:To solve the problem of the long forming process for hollow shafts with constant wall thickness (HSCWT), a new process for forming HSCWT, namely three-roll skew rolling, has been proposed. First, the working principle of the three-roll skew rolling process is presented. Then, the finite element model (FEM) of the three-roll skew rolling HSCWT is established. The strain-stress field and temperature field distribution rules of the three-roll skew rolling HSCWT are analyzed with FEM. The stress-strain field of the rolled piece is distributed uniformly along the axial direction but not uniformly along the radial direction. The variation of the temperature field is related to the axial traction velocity. The greater the axial traction velocity, the smaller the variation of the temperature field. The temperature of rolled pieces varies within 100 °C during rolling. Finally, the three-roll skew rolling experiment of the HSCWT is carried out. The results show that the three-roll skew rolling process can form HSCWT. The temperature field of the three-roll skew rolling HSCWT is evenly distributed. The selection of larger axial traction velocity is conducive to the forming of rolled pieces. The three-roll skew rolling technology has achieved near constant temperature forming of HSCWT.
