Abstract:Ethylene was polymerized using bis(cyclopentadienyl) titanium dichloride (Cp2TiCl2) and crnick-el-diimine (ArN = C(CH3)-C(CH3) = NAr, Ar = 2, 6-(iPr)2C6H3) (DMN) binary catalysts, activated with methylaluminoxane (MAO). The effects of polymerization temperature and Cp2TiCl2 molar fraction on binary catalysts performances were investigated. The activity of binary catalysts increased linearly with Cp2TiCl2 molar fraction at 0°C. The binary catalysts system showed a good synergic effect at 50°C. The polymerization activity increased with Cp2TiCl2 molar fraction with a maximum at 0.67 of Cp2TiCl2 molar fraction. The gel permeation chromatography (GPC) analysis showed that both Cp2TiCl2 and nickel-dii-mine have only one type of active site, while the binary catalysts have two types, which are almost the same as that of Cp2TiCl2 and nickel-diimine respectively. Analysis of polyethylene microblends using differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) indicate that phase separation occurres in the obtained polyethylene at 50°C, while the linear and branched polyethylene obtained at 0°C are uniformly microblends.

Abstract:The catalytic activity of a new family of aluminum bis(iminophosphorano)methanide and methandiide complexes (1–5) toward olefin polymerization has been evaluated. The complexes (1–3) are monomeric methanide complexes of the form [κN,κN′-{(Me3SiNP(Ph)2)2CH}Al(Cl)R] (R=Et) (1) or [κN,κN′-{(Me3SiNP(Ph)2)2CH}AlR2} (R=Me, Bu) (2, 3) which have a structure reminiscent of R2Al(acac) complexes. These systems are moderately effective as transition metal-free ethylene polymerization catalysts when activated by trityl tetrafluoroborate yielding slurry polymerization activities in the range of 3–68g polymer/(mmol Alh) (normalized to 1atm) under normal industrial conditions. A remarkable bis(iminophosphorano)methandiide complex [κC,κC,κN,κN′-{(Me3SiNP(Ph)2)2C}(R2Al)2] (R=Me) (4) which is based on a spirocyclic carbon center subtended by two AlMe2 units (each of which is further coordinated with an imine group) gave, under similar catalytic activation and reaction conditions, very high polymerization activity (2×103g polymer/(mmol Alh)) for ethylene. Solution polymerization activity was also high. This system also co-polymerized ethylene and 1-octene. The analog 5 wherein R=Bu was not so effective. These latter complexes indicate that dialuminum species may provide effective transition metal-free olefin polymerization systems.
Ethylene Polymerization with Palygorskite Supported Nickel-Diimine Catalyst

Abstract:A nickel-diimine catalyst [N, N'-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-1,4-diaza-2,3-dimethyl-1, 3-butadiene nickel dibromide, DMN] was supported on palygorskite clay for ethylene slurry polymerization. The effect of supporting methods on the catalyst impregnation was studied and compared. Pretreatment of the support with methylaluminoxane (MAO) followed by DMN impregnation gave higher catalyst loading and catalytic activity than the direct impregnation of DMN. Catalyst activity as high as 5.42 x 10(5) g PE-molNi(-1)-h(-1) was achieved at ethylene pressure of 6.87 x 10(5) Pa and polymerization temperature of 20 degrees C. In particular, the morphological change of the support during MAO treatment was characterized and analyzed. It was found that nano-fiber clusters formed during the support pretreatment, which increased the surface area of the support and favored the impregnation of the catalyst. The investigation of polymerization behavior of supported catalyst revealed that the polymerization rate could be kept at a relatively high level for a long time, different from the homogeneous catalyst. By analyzing the SEM photographs of the polymer produced by the supported catalyst, the morphological evolution of polymer particles was preliminarily studied.

Abstract:Poly (styrene-co-acrylic acid) (PSA )/MgCl2 complex was coated on TiCl3 catalyst (SLC-S catalyst) supported on SiO2 using sol-gel method,and the Ziegler-Natta hybrid catalysts were prepared.The resulting catalysts were characterized by a series of techniques,namely Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR),laser scattering particle analyzer and scanning electronic microscopy (SEM).It was found that the hybrid catalysts had a core-shell structure and the thicknesses of membrane of HC-5 (PSA/SLC-S = 5 wt% ) catalyst and HC-20 (PSA/SLC-S = 20 wt% ) catalyst were 1.5 and 3 μm,respectively.Three different kinds of catalysts were used for gas phase ethylene polymerization.The effects of thickness of the membrane in hybrid catalysts on the activity and the profile of the polymerization kinetic curves of the catalysts were investigated.The results indicated that the HC-20 catalyst had a good ethylene polymerization activity and its kinetic curve was stable with an inductive period,while HC-5 catalyst demonstrated a fast decay during polymerization and its activity and kinetic curve both resembled the traditional TiCl3 catalyst.Besides,the properties of the polyethylene made by hybrid catalysts under different hydrogen contents were obtained.It is obvious that the thickness of membranes could affect the hydrogen response of the hybrid catalysts and the molecular weight distribution of the resultant polyethylene.
Effects of Aluminoxane Cocatalysts on Bis(imino)pyridine Iron‐catalyzed Ethylene Oligomerization

Abstract:Ethylene oligomerization facilitated with a bis(imino)pyridine iron catalyst in the presence of various aluminoxane cocatalysts is investigated in this work. The effects of different trialkylaluminiums and [H2O]/[Al] molar ratios employed in the synthesis of aluminoxanes on the catalytic activity, selectivity to linear alpha-olefins, and polymer share have been discussed. The results show that MAO-S (methylaluminoxane synthesized herein) renders the highest catalytic activity but with a rather high undesired polymer share, and i-BAO (iso-butylaluminoxane) is the most optimum cocatalyst, rendering the predominant production of alpha-olefins at high activity with significantly reduced polymer share. On the contrary, EAO (ethylaluminoxane) shows quite poor catalytic activity. The use of mixed aluminoxanes, MBAO (mixed aluminoxanes synthesized from trimethylaluminium and triisobutylaluminium mixtures), and EBAO (mixed aluminoxanes synthesized from triethylaluminium and triisobutylaluminium mixtures) as cocatalysts also renders different catalytic performance, indicating that the composition/structure of mixed aluminoxanes has pronounced effects on the catalytic activity and selectivity to linear alpha-olefins.

Abstract:Different meshes powder of polyethylene grafting 4-vinylpyridine copolymers (PEVP) has been produced through the irradiation method. After pretreated with Methylaluminoxane (MAO), the copolymers were used as the supports for Cp2ZrCl2 catalyst. Results of XPS and FTIR measurements show that the catalytic sites have been bridged through MAO on the polyethylene cartier. The percentages of grafting 4-vinylpyridine and supported Cp2ZrCl2 depend on the size of polyethylene powder. The smaller the polyethylene powder, the more percent 4-vinylpyridine group and the Cp2ZrCl2 on the polyethylene chains, and the polyethylene- supported catalyst has a much higher activity for ethylene polymerization.

Abstract:A mesoporous molecular sieve MCM-41 supported iron-based diimine catalyst (MC) was prepared for the first time. The kinetic behavior of ethylene polymerization with MC was studied. The effects of Al/Fe molar ratio and various cocatalysts on the catalytic activity and properties of the polyethylene obtained were investigated. The results showed that good catalytic activities can be reached with cocatalyst methylaluminoxane (MAO) and triethylaluminium (TEA). Ethylene polymerization with MC gave polymers with higher molecular weight, melting temperature and onset temperatures of decomposition (T-onset) and better morphology than those obtained with the corresponding homogeneous catalyst. Abstract:A novel zirconium complex bearing bis(phenoxyketimine) ligand (1) bis((3,5-di-tert-butyl-C6H2-2-O)PhCN(2,4-di-fluoro-C6H3))ZrCl2 (2) was prepared and successfully immobilized on a mesoporous molecular sieve MCM-41 in chemical method. Results of slurry polymerization of ethylene with MCM-41-supported catalyst (MC) indicated that the morphologies of polyethylene obtained differed greatly in heptane and toluene. Homogeneous catalyst 2 exhibited a very high initial activity in ethylene polymerization at room temperature resulting in great viscosity of the system. When immobilized on MCM-41, MC showed a smooth yet highly active kinetic behavior. With MAO as the cocatalyst, the effects of Al/Zr molar ratio and polymerization temperature on catalytic activity and properties of polyethylene obtained were investigated. The results showed that polyethylene obtained with MC possessed higher molecular weight (Mn) and broader molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn) than those formed with its homogeneous counterpart.

Abstract:The ansa-metallocene complexes with an allyl substituted silane bridge have been synthesized and used as self-immobilized catalysts for ethylene polymerization. The results showed that the self-immobilized catalysts 1–4, 6 kept high ethylene polymerization activities of ca. 106 g PE mol−1 M h−1 and high molecular weight (Mw≈105) of polyethylene.

Abstract:Four kinds of catalysts have been prepared by supported(n-BuCp)2ZrCl2 and MAO onto the mesoporous materials with different morphologies including rod-like,sphere-like,doughnut-like and hollow sphere-like shapes firstly and successfully.The structure and morphology of the catalysts have been studied.And the catalysts have been investigated for the polymerization of ethylene.The result of ethylene homopolymerization and ethylene/1-hexene copolymerization catalyzed by metallocene adduct catalyst confirmed that catalyst possessed higher activity in copolymerization and homopolymerization than 955 silica gel,and that hollow sphere-like catalyst is the most suitable carrier for ethylene polymerization.

Abstract:The late transition metal catalyst 2,6-bis[1-(2,6-diisopropylphenylimino)ethyllpyridine iron(II) chloride was supported on silica. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electronic micrograph and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements were utilized to examine the process of supporting catalyst on silica and investigate the possible mechanism of support. Furthermore, ethylene polymerizations with the supported catalysts were carried out in various conditions such as different reaction temperatures and Al/Fe molar ratios. The results showed that MAO first reacted with the hydroxyl of silica forming Si-O-Al bonds and then the catalyst was bridged through MAO on the surface of silica. Compared with homogeneous catalysts, the supported catalysts show some decrease in catalyst activity. However, they can show good activity at a lower Al/Fe molar ratio with MAO as co-catalyst and give rise to higher molecular weight and melting temperature of the polymer. Better morphology of polyethylene was obtained by a supported catalyst than by its corresponding homogeneous catalyst. (C), 2002 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract:A kind of novel bridged nonmetallocene catalysts was synthesized by the treatment of N,N-imidazole and N,N-phenylimidazole with n-BuLi, and MCl4 (M = Ti, Zr) in THF. Those catalysts were performed for ethylene polymerization after activated by methylaluminoxane (MAO). The effects of polymerization temperature, Al/M ratio, pressure of monomer, and concentration of catalysts on ethylene polymerization behaviors were investigated in detail. Those results revealed that the catalyst system was favorable for ethylene polymerization with high catalytic activity. The polymer was characterized by 13C NMR, WAXD, GPC, and DSC. Abstract:Four cocatalysts, referred to as ethylaluminoxanes, were synthesized by the reaction between triethyl-aluminium (AlEt3) and water under various molar ratios of H2O/Al at -78 degrees C. Aluminoxaiies were used as cocatalysts for a MgCl2-supported Ziegler-Natta catalyst for propylene polymerization at temperatures ranging from 70 to 100 degrees C. When the polymerization was activated by AlEt3, the activity as well as the molecular weight and isotacticity of the resulting polymer gradually dropped as the temperature varied from 70 to 100 degrees C. When ethylaluminoxane was employed as the cocatalyst, good activity and high molecular weight and isotacticity were obtained at 100 degrees C. Furthermore, when the cocatalyst varied from AlEt3 to ethylaluminoxane, the atactic fraction and polymer fraction with moderate isotacticity decreased and the high isotactic fraction slightly increased, which indicated that the variation of the cocatalyst significantly affects the isospecificity of active sites. It was suggested that the reactivity of the Al-Et group and the size of the cocatalyst were correlated to the performance of the Ziegler-Natta catalyst at different temperatures. Abstract:The polymerized metallocene catalyst 4 was prepared by the co-polymerization of ansa-zirconocene complex [CH3Si(2)]ZrCl2 (3) containing vinyl substituted silane bridge with styrene in the presence of radical initiator. Catalyst 4 was found to display high ethylene polymerization activity of 2.28 x 10(6) g PE/(mol . h) with a viscosity average molecular weight (M-eta) value of 61.6 x 10(3) using methylalumoxane (MAO) as a co-catalyst. The ethylene polymerization has been investigated under different conditions.
Influence of Cocatalyst on High Temperature Polymerization of Propylene Catalyzed by Ziegler-Natta Catalyst

Abstract:A series of ethylaluminoxanes were synthesized by the reaction between AlEt3 and water under various molar ratios of H2O to Al at -78°C. The aluminoxanes were used as cocatalyst for MgCl2-supported Ziegler-Natta catalyst for propylene polymerization at the temperature ranging from 70°C to 100°C. It was showed that the isotacticities of polymers prepared by various cocatalysts were close to each other at 70°C, while the polymerization activity was in the following order, AlEt3 > EAO1 > EAO2 > EAO3 > EAO4, and the molecular weights of polymers obtained with EAO were higher than that with AlEt3. The polymerization activities obtained with various cocatalysts (except EAO4) were similar at 100°C, while the isotacticity and molecular weight of polymer increased in the order of AlEt3 ≈ EAO1 < EAO2 < EAO3. It is proposed that the reactivity and the size of cocatalyst influence the properties of active site of Ziegler-Natta catalyst resulting in the different properties of polymer.
Ethyl‐iso‐butylaluminoxane Activated Metallocene Catalyst for Olefin Polymerization

Abstract:Ethylene and propylene were polymerized by different combinations of metallocenes and aluminoxanes. Ethyl-iso-butylaluminoxane (EBAO), which could be easily obtained by direct hydrolysis of Et3Al/iso-Bu3Al in toluene with water, displayed as good polymerization activity as methylaluminoxane when it was paired with some metallocenes. The UV-visible spectroscopic study on different metallocene/aluminoxane pairs suggests that tightness of the ionic pairs generated from the reaction between metallocene and aluminoxane is different for a fixed metallocenium. The loose ionic pair derived from EBAO prefers the monomer propagation and hinders the interaction between active species, which results in high catalytic activity and molecular weight. Abstract:Activated with methylaluminoxane (MAO), phenoxy-based zirconium complexes bis[(3-(BU)-B-t-C6H3-2-O)-CH=NC6H5]ZrCl2, bis[(3,5-di-(BU)-B-t-C6H2-2-O)-PhC=NC6H5] ZrCl2, and bis[(3,5-di-Bu-t-C6H2-2-O)-PhC=N(2-F-C6H4)]ZrCl2 for the first time have been used for the copolymerization of ethylene with 10-undecen-1-ol. In comparison with the conventional metallocene, the phenoxy-based zirconium complexes exhibit much higher catalytic activities [> 10(7) g of polymer (mol of catalyst)(-1) h(-1)]. The incorporation of 10-undecen-1-ol into the copolymers and the properties of the copolymers are strongly affected by the catalyst structure. Among the three catalysts, complex e is the most favorable for preparing higher molecular weight functionalized polyethylene containing a higher content of hydroxyl groups. Studies on the polymerization conditions indicate that the incorporated commoner content in the copolymers mainly depends on the comonomer concentration in the feed. The catalytic activity is slightly affected by the Al-(MAO)/Zr molar ratio but decreases greatly with an increase in the polymerization temperature. (c) 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
Immobilization of Constrained Geometry Metallocene Catalyst

Abstract:C(CH 3) 2(Cp)N(t-Bu) ZrCl 2/MAO/SiO 2 supported constrained geometry metallocene catalyst was prepared by immobilization of the prepared constrained geometry metallocene C(CH 3) 2(Cp)N(t-Bu)ZrCl 2 on silica gel as the support. The influences of silica gel calcination temperature, time of methylaluminoxane (MAO) processing silica gel, concentration of metallocene compound, immobilizing temperature and immobilizing time of metallocene compound on the supported catalyst properties and its polymerization activity in copolymerization of ethylene with 1-octene were investigated. The results showed that the (CH 3) 2(Cp)N(t-Bu) ZrCl 2/MAO/SiO 2 catalyst with high copolymerization activity could be obtained under the conditions of silica gel calcination temperature 600°C, MAO processing silica gel time 6 h, concentration of metallocene compound 0.65 mmol/L, immobilizing temperature 40°C and immobilizing time 6 h. At the same time, 1-octene content in the copolymer was relatively high, with the result of good particle morphology and nonadherence to the reactor wall.
