Abstract:This paper focused on wear resistance of vermicular cast iron. During casting process, strip-shaped H13 steel units were parallelly located on the surface of vermicular cast iron ( the matrix), thus considering it as biomimetic coupling material. Wear resistance on the surface was studied. The results indicated that metallurgical bond existed between the units and the matrix. And the wear resistance of the biomimetic coupling material in this work was greatly enhanced, compared to the original vermicular cast iron, due to the effect of H13 steel unit. The steel units and vermicular cast iron area alternatively distributed on the surface, like the nacreous layer. The metallurgical bond existing between the units and the parent material led to a bionic microstructure on the surface. When the surface spacing of the units reached 4 mm, the biomimetic coupling material had the peak magnitude of wear resistance, among all the samples tested. The wear loss on the surface was reduced by 79%, compared to the original sample of cast iron. Existence of the units on the surface was also the key factor affecting the wear resistance of biomimetic coupling material, which played an important role in enhancing the wear resistance of vermicular cast iron.
