Abstract:Natural cellulose with the crystal form of cellulose Ⅰ, when treated with condensed lye(e.g. 18%NaOH), can change into new crystal form of cellulose Ⅱ. But the nano-crystallinecellulose(NCC) can do it when only treated with dilute lye (e.g. 1%NaOH) at room temperatureand even can dissolve into slightly concentrated lye (e.g. 4%NaOH).

Abstract:Urea/NaOH solution has been used for swelling pretreatment of the pulp fibers and a mechanical method is proposed for the preparation of cellulose. The cellulose was treated with different concentrations of urea/NaOH solutions. The chemical structure, crystalline state, and micro morphology of cellulose were characterized by FTIR, SEM, and XRD. After these experiments, the optimum procedure of preparation could be established. The result shows the most stable cellulose suspension can be obtained at -10., 7.5% NaOH/10% urea. -cellulose has a loose networked structure, with the diameter among 0.05-0.6 ae m while the average is about 0.25 mu m. After the pretreatment, the degree of crystallinity of the cellulose decreases. The hydrogen absorption peak in FTIR spectra moved and the characteristic peak of cellulose. appeared. Some crystalline cellulose changed from type. to type. indicating that NaOH/urea solution has destructive effect on the cellulose crystalline regions; under mechanical forces, the hydrogen bonds in cellulose are broken and restructured, causing the scale cellulose and the change of crystalline type.

Abstract:Cellulose nanocrystals as reinforcing agents have received considerable interest, and their dimension mainly depends on the original sources of cellulose. We intend to manually modulate the morphology of cellulose nanocrystals by treating them with cellulose solvents so that we can explore their reinforcing capacity. In this work, waste cotton fabric was processed in two aqueous solvents (a sulfuric acid aqueous solution and a NaOH/urea aqueous solution), and the regenerated cellulose was used to produce cellulose nanocrystals using acid hydrolysis. The results revealed that the nanocrystals (RCNC-H) obtained after the treatment in sulfuric acid had a hybrid crystalline structure and a needle-like shape with an aspect ratio of about 15.2, while cotton fabric was completely dissolved in the NaOH/urea aqueous solution, and the regenerated nanocrystals (RCNC-N) displayed a typical crystalline form of cellulose II with a higher crystallinity and a shorter rod-like shape with an aspect ratio of about 6.3. The reinforcing effects of RCNC-H and RCNC-N were evaluated using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) films as a model, where the addition of RCNC-H resulted in a relatively better tensile strength and oxygen barrier property, and the PVA/RCNC-N films had a slightly lower water vapor permeability. Therefore, this work suggests a new possibility for altering the naturally formed nanostructure of cellulose for different applications.

Abstract:In this study, methods of completing the structural conversion of partly crystalline cellulose II were studied by solid-state 13C CP/MAS NMR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The study incorporated post-treatments of samples that had been mercerized or regenerated to yield somewhat crystalline cellulose II. These post-treatments used different temperatures, lower concentrations of NaOH than used in, for example, the original mercerization, and different neutralization methods. The cellulose employed was originally filter paper from wood pulp that was subsequently mercerized or dissolved and regenerated to create partly crystalline cellulose II. The variations in rate of each component were monitored at different NaOH concentrations and reaction temperatures during the treatment; these components include the crystalline and accessible surface as well as the inaccessible surface/amorphous region. Subsequently, neutralization was performed for the crystallization of cellulose II and the effects of the acid employed were also evaluated. It can be thought that controlling the partial Na-cellulose construction is important for improving the assembly of cellulose II; this is achieved by optimizing the concentration of NaOH, treatment temperature, and selection of acid for neutralization. NMR spectroscopy of the intermediate state of the NaOH detected the partial generation of Na-cellulose; further, another domain exhibited the spectrum of highly crystallized cellulose II. It is believed that the selective Na-cellulose construction in the inaccessible surface cellulose is the result of an increase in the size of cellulose II crystals. During the NaOH treatment, at a concentration of 10%, the crystallinity index evaluated by both NMR and X-ray was maximized; further, at the treatment temperature of 80 °C the crystallinity of the cellulose II evaluated by NMR improved. Moreover, the neutralization, which was conducted after the alkaline treatment with H2SO4, established the most suitable conditions for the crystallization of cellulose II.Graphic abstract Open image in new window

Abstract:Crystalline structures of cellulose (named as Cell 1), NaOH-treated cellulose (Cell 2), and subsequent CO2-treated cellulose (Cell 2-C) were analyzed by wide-angle X-ray diffraction and FTIR spectroscopy. Transformation from cellulose I to cellulose II was observed by X-ray diffraction for Cell 2 treated with 15-20 wt% NaOH. Subsequent treatment with CO2 also transformed the Cell 2-C treated with 5-10 wt% NaOH. Many of the FTIR bands including 2901, 1431, 1282, 1236, 1202, 1165, 1032, and 897 cm(-1) were shifted to higher wave number (by 2-13 cm(-1)). However, the bands at 3352, 1373, and 983 cm(-1) were shifted to lower wave number (by 3-95 cm(-1)). In contrast to the bands at 1337, 1114, and 1058 cm(-1), the absorbances measured at 1263, 993, 897, and 668 cm(-1) were increased. The FTIR spectra of hydrogen-bonded OH stretching vibrations at around 3352 cm(-1) were resolved into three bands for cellulose I and four bands for cellulose II, assuming that all the vibration modes follow Gaussian distribution. The bands of 1 (3518 cm(-1)), 2 (3349 cm(-1)), and 3 (3195 cm(-1)) were related to the sum of valence vibration of an H-bonded OH group and an intramolecular hydrogen bond of 2-OH ...O-6, intramolecular hydrogen bond of 3-OH...O-5 and the intermolecular hydrogen bond of 6-O...HO-3', respectively. Compared with the bands of cellulose I, a new band of 4 (3115 cm(-1)) related to intermolecular hydrogen bond of 2-OH...O-2' and/or intermolecular hydrogen bond of 6-OH...O-2' in cellulose II appeared. The crystallinity index (CI) was obtained by X-ray diffraction [CI(XD)] and FTIR spectroscopy [CI(IR)]. Including absorbance ratios such as A1431,1419/A897,894 and A1263/A1202,1200, the CI(IR) was evaluated by the absorbance ratios using all the characteristic absorbances of cellulose. The CI(XD) was calculated by the method of Jayme and Knolle. In addition, X-ray diffraction curves, with and without amorphous halo correction, were resolved into portions of cellulose I and cellulose II lattice. From the ratio of the peak area, that is, peak area of cellulose I (or cellulose II)/total peak area, CI(XD) were divided into CI(XD-CI) for cellulose I and CI(XD-CII) for cellulose II. The correlation between CI(XD-CI) (or CI(XD-CII)) and CI(IR) was evaluated, and the bands at 2901 (2802), 1373 (1376), 897 (894), 1263, 668 cm(-1) were good for the internal standard (or denominator) of CI(IR), which increased the correlation coefficient. Both fraction of the absorbances showing peak shift were assigned as the alternate components of CI(IR). The crystallite size was decreased to constant value for Cell 2 treated at >or= 15 wt% NaOH. The crystallite size of Cell 2-C (cellulose II) was smaller than that of Cell 2 (cellulose I) treated at 5-10 wt% NaOH. But the crystallite size of Cell 2-C (cellulose II) was larger than that of Cell 2 (cellulose II) treated at 15-20 wt% NaOH.

Abstract:Low-concentration alkali treatments at low temperatures facilitate the crystal transition of cellulose I to II. However, the transition mechanism remains unclear. Hence, in this study, we traced the transition using in situ solid-state 13C CP/MAS NMR, WAXS, and 23Na NMR relaxation measurements. In situ solid-state 13C CP/MAS NMR and WAXS measurements revealed that soaking cellulose in NaOH at low temperatures disrupts the intramolecular hydrogen bonds and lowers the crystallinity of cellulose. The dynamics of Na ions (NaOH) play a crucial role in causing these phenomena. 23Na NMR relaxation measurements indicated that the Na-ion correlation time becomes longer during the crystal transition. This transition requires the penetration of Na ions (NaOH) into the cellulose crystal and a reduction in Na-ion mobility, which occurs at low temperatures or high NaOH concentrations. The interactions between cellulose and NaOH disrupt intramolecular hydrogen bonds, inducing a conformational change in the cellulose molecules into a more stable arrangement. This weakens the hydrophobic interactions of cellulose, and facilitates the penetration of NaOH and water into the crystal, leading to the formation of alkali cellulose. Our findings suggest that a strategy to control NaOH dynamics could lead to the discovery of a novel preparation method for cellulose II.

Abstract:Nanocrystalline celluloses (NCCs) were separated from four commercial microcrystalline celluloses (MCCs) by an acid hydrolysis–sonication treatment. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrum, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were conducted to investigate the NCCs. MCCs with different morphologies and particle sizes showed different aggregation degrees. The aggregation of MCCs followed the order MCC1 > MCC3 > MCC2 > MCC4, which is the same order of the heights of the resulting NCCs. The best uniformity and thermal stability were characterized for NCC3, which was produced by MCC3 with smallest original particle size and good dispersity among the four MCCs. This result suggests that both the original particle size and dispersity of MCCs had significant effects on separated NCCs.

Abstract:The object of the present paper was researching a kind of nano cellulose prepared by the pretreatment of diluted acid and the physical method of high pressure homogenization. The cellulose pulp was pretreated by diluted acid and then prepared by high pressure homogenization. The one-dimensional rodlike nano cellulose was obtained. And the spectral properties of nano cellulose were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The thermal property of nano cellulose was analyzed by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The dimension and morphology of nano celluose were observed using atomic force microscope (AFM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). FTIR analysis results showed that the one-dimensional rodlike nano cellulose had the same characteristic functional groups as cellulose pulp. And it was showed that intramolecular hydrogen bond association effects of nano cellulose were partly destroyed. It was indicated by XRD analysis that nano cellulose and cellulose pulp corresponded to the crystal type of cellulose I. The crystallinity of nano cellulose was increased from 59% to 70%, compared to cellulose pulp. Nano cellulose still maintained both crystalline domains and amorphous regions, although crystalline domains and amorphous regions were partly damaged by preparing process. Thermal analysis results demonstrated that the thermal stability of nano cellulose was lower than that of cellulose pulp. The decomposition temperature of nano cellulose was 330 degrees C. Two weight-loss stages were present in the range 292-500 degrees C. The TEM photograph showed that nano cellulose was significantly rodlike shape with hundreds of nanometer in length and tens of nanometers in width. AFM image showed that nano cellulose was agglomerated together.

Abstract:Cellulose II exhibits exceptional attributes, including flexibility, high stainability, and gloss. However, its strength is lower than that of cellulose I due to reduced crystallinity during the crystal transition. In this study, we devised a novel method to regulate the proportion and distribution of cellulose I and II crystals. This was achieved by employing a low-concentration alkaline solution and liquid nitrogen, resulting in a high-strength composite material that retained the excellent properties of cellulose II. When cellulose powder was immersed in an 8 wt% NaOH solution and quenched with liquid nitrogen, the crystal transition from cellulose I to II occurred outward from the sample periphery to its center. The percentage of cellulose II increased proportionally with treatment time. This technique was extended to cellulose I-rich cotton fibers, facilitating the creation of a composite fiber with cellulose I at the core and cellulose II on the surface. The tensile strength and Young's modulus of the composite fiber were greater than those of the mercerized cellulose II fiber. Additionally, the elongation at break and toughness of these fibers surpassed those of conventional cotton fibers. This innovative method allows for the preparation of cellulose I and II composite materials with diverse properties.

Abstract:A novel kind of spherical cellulose nanocrystal (SCNC) suspension was prepared by hydrolysis of microcrystalline cellulose with a mixture of sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid under ultrasonic treatment. The mechanism of SCNC formation and the liquid crystalline properties of their suspensions were investigated. A suspension of spherical particles was usually inclined to form crystallization colloids rather than liquid crystals at high concentration. However, a SCNC suspension with high polydispersity (49%) was observed to form the liquid crystalline phase, and the liquid crystalline textures changed with increasing concentration. This observation offers an approach to the liquid crystal formation of highly polydisperse spherical nanoparticles.

Abstract:Nanocellulose was fabricated from empty fruit bunch (EFB)-derived microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) through combined acid hydrolysis with sulfuric and hydrochloric acids and high-pressure homogenization. The effects of acid-to-MCC ratio and the number of high-pressure homogenizations passes on nanoparticle morphology were investigated. The MCC was treated with different concentrations of sulphuric acid (5% to 25%) through the hydrolysis process. The diameter of the acid treated MCC fibres was reduced to roughly 8 m in Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) micrographs, while the length of the fibres was reduced by several microns when compared to untreated fibres. The suspensions of MCC were passed through a high pressure homogenizer at a constant pressure of 800 bar with passing times of 10, 20 and 30 cycles. After 30 cycles, the final suspension of nanocellulose (NC) became cloudy. This was a visual indication that the particles were converted to smaller sizes and were less entangled. Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) results showed that the particle size of nanocellulose ranged between 18 to 20 nm. As a result, the combination of sulphuric acid hydrolysis and high-pressure homogenization operations could be used as an efficient chemo29 mechanical technique for producing nanocellulose from various cellulosic sources.

Abstract:A hairy cationic nanocellulose (CNCC) was prepared by a two-step reaction. First dialdehyde modified cellulose (DAMC) were prepared by periodate oxidation of cellulose fibers and subsequently DAMC fibers were cationized by a reaction between the aldehyde groups of cellulose and (2-hydrazinyl-2-oxoethyl)-trimethylazanium chloride [Girard’s reagent T (GT)] to produce cationic dialdehyde cellulose (CDAMC) fibers. Subjecting the suspension of CDAMC fibers to a hot-water treatment at 60 °C, resulted in the formation of cationic rod-like nanocellulose (CNCC). Atomic force microscopy and transmission electron microscopy showed the CNCC has a width of 5 nm and a length about 120 nm. Zeta potential measurement, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, solid carbon-13 NMR and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed the presence of cationic groups on CNCC. The positive charge content of CNCC is about 1.68 mmol/g measured by conductometric titration. CNCC has a crystalline index of 67 % and possesses cellulose I crystalline structure.

Abstract:Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) were first isolated from microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) by p-toluene sulfonic acid (p-TsOH) hydrolysis. Cellulose II nanocrystal (CNC II) and cellulose III nanocrystal (CNC III) were then formed by swelling the obtained cellulose I nanocrystal (CNC I) in concentrated sodium hydroxide solutions and ethylenediamine (EDA) respectively. The properties of CNC I, CNC II and CNC III were subjected to comprehensive characterization by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The results indicated that CNC I, CNC II and CNC III obtained in this research had high crystallinity index and good thermal stability. The degradation temperatures of the resulted CNC I, CNC II and CNC III were 300 °C, 275 °C and 242 °C, respectively. No ester bonds were found in the resulting CNCs. CNCs prepared in this research also had large aspect ratio and high negative zeta potential.

Abstract:Abstract Derived from the most abundant natural polymer, cellulose nanocrystal materials have attracted attention in recent decades due to their chemical and mechanical properties. However, still unclear is the influence of different exposed facets of the cellulose nanocrystals on the physicochemical properties. Herein, we first designed cellulose II nanocrystals with different exposed facets, the hydroxymethyl conformations distribution, hydrogen bond (HB) analysis, as well as the relative structural stability of these models (including crystal facets {A, B, O} and Type-A models vary in size) are theoretically investigated. The results reveal that the HB network of terminal anhydroglucose depends on the adjacent chain’s contact sites in nanocrystals exposed with different facets. Compared to nanocrystals exposed with inclined facet, these exposed with flat facet tend to be the most stable. Therefore, the strategy of tuning exposed crystal facets will guide the design of novel cellulose nanocrystals with various physicochemical properties.

Abstract:Nanocellulose (NC) was isolated from okara (soybean residue) using a chemical method (TEMPO/NaBr/NaClO oxidation) combined with a physical method (sonication or high-pressure homogenization). The key physicochemical and structural features of the isolated CN were compared with those of non-treated cellulose obtained from okara. TEMPO oxidation combining with sonication (600 W, 15 min) produced NC with smaller average particle size (d = 182 nm), low polydispersity index (PDI = 0.39), strong negative charge (ζ = −42 mV), high swelling ratio (SR = 7.9), high crystallinity (88%), and high thickening ability. Compared to non-treated cellulose, NC exhibit enhanced thermal stability after sonication/homogenization-assisted treatment (the initial degradation temperature of the cellulose >255 °C and the minimum pyrolysis residue at 11%). Overall, the availability and low cost of NC in okara is a feasible choice for the production and development of new cellulose materials.

The Surface Modification of Nanocrystalline Cellulose

Abstract:In order to improve the redisperisibility of nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC) particles, three grafted reactions with acetylation,hydroxyethylation and hydroxypropylation, respectively were introduced to modify the NCC particle surface. The most advantages of these three methods were that the reaction condition was simple and was easily controlled, while the redispersibility of the resulting products was improved distinctly at the same time. The properties of the modified NCC were characterized by FT-IR,C-13-NMR, TEM and TGA. The results showed that the products of the modified NCC, after desiccation, could be dispersed again in the proper solvents to form stable suspensions by ultrasonic treatments, and the diameter of the modified NCC particles did not increase clearly. However,their thermal behaviors were different. The beginning decomposition temperature of the products that NCC was surface modified via hydroxyethylation or hydroxypropylation, respectively, was distinctly lower than that of NCC via acetylation,due to their low degree of crystallinity.

Abstract:Understanding the behavior of fluids with inhomogeneous structural properties is critical for many industrial and biological materials. Sulfuric acid hydrolysis of cotton with ultrasonic treatment and low-speed centrifugation during purification yields "spiky" discotic cellulose particles. Amorphous cellulose remained in solution and forms discotic units which may be nucleated by crystalline rods. Scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscope images confirm the discotic nature of the cellulose. High speed centrifugation could recover rod-like cellulose nanocrystals from the discotic cellulose nanoparticle solution. 3.6 wt% discotic cellulose nanoparticles formed the typical nematic phase and the liquid crystal texture became more structured with increasing concentration. Preparation of Cellulose Nanocrystals by Synergistic Action of Ionic Liquid and Recyclable Solid Acid under Mild Conditions

Abstract:Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) are nanoscale particles made from cellulose. They have many unique properties such as being lightweight, stiff, and renewable, making them promising for a variety of applications in a wide range of industries, including materials science, energy storage, and biomedicine. In this paper, a two-stage (swelling-SA-catalyzed) method including IL pretreatment and solid acid hydrolysis process was developed to extract CNCs with high purity and good thermal stability from microcrystalline cellulose (MCC). In the first stage, the swelling of MCC in ionic liquid was studied with the assistance of ultrasonication, and it was found that the amorphous regions became more disordered while the crystalline areas were selectively retained under the conditions of 30 min of reaction time, 45 °C of temperature, 2% of ionic liquid water content and 1:4 mass ratio of cellulose to ionic liquid. CNCs were extracted using solid acid hydrolysis, with a 45 wt% solid acid to cellulose ratio and a 5.0 h hydrolysis process at 45 °C. The morphology, crystallinity, surface characteristics and thermo stability of the sample were characterized by atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), respectively. Results demonstrated the highly thermostable CNCs were successful extracted with rodlike shape of 300 ± 100 nm in length and 20 ± 10 nm in width. Solid acid recovery and reuse were also studied, revealing a promising candidate that can reduce the environmental impact associated with chemical products.

Abstract:Pretreatment with deep eutectic solvent is highly desirable to improve the efficiency of the preparation of nano-cellulose and simplify the operation. The natural deep eutectic solvent (NADES) composed of lactate (LA) and choline chloride (CC) was applied for the preparation of nano-cellulose under mild conditions accompanied by simultaneous esterification modifications of it. The effects of the treatment conditions on the structure and properties of nano-cellulose were investigated and explained the mechanism from the perspective of molecular simulation. The results showed that the reaction time of nano-cellulose could be shortened to 3 h, and the reaction temperature could be as low as 100 °C. The esterification of cellulose not only avoided over-hydrolysis and dissolution in the pretreatment process but also ensured the high yield of nano-cellulose (up to 75 %−89 %). The crystallinity of nano-cellulose decreased compared with the raw material due to the influence of mechanical action. The nano-cellulose fibers (NCF) and nano-cellulose crystals (NCC) with different lengths were achieved by controlling the reaction conditions of the pretreatment of NADES. The esterification modifications of NADES on cellulose during the dissolution of nano-cellulose were confirmed by molecular simulation. The nano-cellulose prepared by this system has good stability, biocompatibility, and degradability, which can be used in the fields of medicine, strengthening composite materials, and emulsion emulsifiers.

Abstract:Crystalline nanocellulose is widely used for example, in the paper-making and food industries, as support matrix material or reinforcement of polymer materials, but also in drug carrier and nanomedicine applications. Interestingly, aqueous solutions of cellulose are extremely sensitive to small amounts of added salt yet mere considerations of charge screening leave open questions regarding the mechanisms, especially for unmodified cellulose in aqueous solutions. Here, we map NaCl ion distributions and the effect of added NaCl salt on the hydration of I cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) surfaces by atomistic detail molecular dynamics simulations with explicit water solvent. The simulations reveal the dependency of the hydration layers of the six surfaces of CNCs on the ions, as well as NaCl ion binding sites, and preferences in terms of binding free energy for the ions near CNC surfaces at different NaCl concentrations. We discuss the modelling results against our prior rheology characterization of cellulose solutions. Together, the results indicate that the high sensitivity of cellulose aqueous solutions to added salt rises from the ions near the surface changing locally the ordering and structure of the hydration layers of the CNC surfaces. The revealed mechanism of salt-induced viscosity changes in cellulose aqueous solutions allows advanced design of gelling CNC systems for various end uses and may also guide tuning cellulose interactions by different solvent environments.

Nanocellulose and Cellulose Making with Bio-Enzymes from Different Particle Sizes of Neosinocalamus Affinis

Abstract:Cellulose is one of the most abundant, widely distributed and abundant polysaccharides on earth, and is the most valuable natural renewable resource for human beings. In this study, three different particle sizes (250, 178, and 150 μm) of Neosinocalamus affinis cellulose were extracted from Neosinocalamus affinis powder using bio-enzyme digestion and prepared into nanocellulose (CNMs). The cellulose contents of 250, 178, and 150 μm particle sizes were 53.44%, 63.38%, and 74.08%, respectively; the crystallinity was 54.21%, 56.03% and 63.58%, respectively. The thermal stability of cellulose increased gradually with smaller particle sizes. The yields of CNMs for 250, 178, and 150 μm particle sizes were 14.27%, 15.44%, and 16.38%, respectively. The results showed that the Neosinocalamus affinis powder was successfully removed from lignin, hemicellulose, and impurities (pectin, resin, etc.) by the treatment of bio-enzyme A (ligninase:hemicellulose:pectinase = 1:1:1) combined with NH3·H2O and H2O2/CH3COOH. Extraction of cellulose from Neosinocalamus affinis using bio-enzyme A, the smaller the particle size of Neosinocalamus affinis powder, the more cellulose content extracted, the higher the crystallinity, the better the thermal stability, and the higher the purity. Subsequently, nanocellulose (CNMs) were prepared by using bio-enzyme B (cellulase:pectinase = 1:1). The CNMs prepared by bio-enzyme B showed a network structure and fibrous bundle shape. Therefore, the ones prepared in this study belong to cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs). This study provides a reference in the extraction of cellulose from bamboo using bio-enzymes and the preparation of nanocellulose. To a certain extent, the utilization of bamboo as a biomass material was improved.
