Abstract:
Nanocellulose (NC) was isolated from okara (soybean residue) using a chemical method (TEMPO/NaBr/NaClO oxidation) combined with a physical method (sonication or high-pressure homogenization). The key physicochemical and structural features of the isolated CN were compared with those of non-treated cellulose obtained from okara. TEMPO oxidation combining with sonication (600 W, 15 min) produced NC with smaller average particle size (d = 182 nm), low polydispersity index (PDI = 0.39), strong negative charge (ζ = −42 mV), high swelling ratio (SR = 7.9), high crystallinity (88%), and high thickening ability. Compared to non-treated cellulose, NC exhibit enhanced thermal stability after sonication/homogenization-assisted treatment (the initial degradation temperature of the cellulose >255 °C and the minimum pyrolysis residue at 11%). Overall, the availability and low cost of NC in okara is a feasible choice for the production and development of new cellulose materials.
