Abstract:This paper introduced some methods to measure internal resistance of Lithium battery,such as phase-locking and amplifying technologies.This paper emphasizes the method which uses auto calibration technology of standard resistance.In the processing of weak signal measurement,there are many influences to test result and precision.The auto calibration technology can reduce the influence of the system error,and calibrate the instrument easily.Meanwhile,this method also acts as a guide for some other weak signal measurement fields.System status transfer diagram and software flow diagram are listed as appendix.

Abstract:This paper introduces the principle of valve regulated lead acid (VRLA) battery internal resistance on-line measurement based on digital phase sensitive detection. According to this principle, hardware design such as exciting signal generating unit, single battery selection network and signal adjustment circuit was analyzed in detail. The comparing experiment results show that the system has strong anti-interference ability, high reliability, high accuracy and good repetitiveness.

Abstract:Internal resistance of the battery can really reflect its own characteristics, which including health status of the battery, inconsistency, state of charge, thermal runaway.On-line measurement of internal resistance can real-time monitor the running state of each battery and accurately, can report fault state of the battery and handle fault in time.This paper implements the practical engineering module of on-line measurement of internal resistance of lithium ion battery for EV (Electric Vehicle) using AC analysis.The detection precision and stability of the module are less than 0.3%.Based on experiments, the paper studies the stability and temperature characteristic of internal resistance of lithium battery.It also studies the relationship between the internal resistance and SOC, charging current with experiments.This paper analyzes the relationship between the internal resistance and default of the battery, such as inconsistency of batteries, excessive charging current, changing of work state, overcharging.

Abstract:Internal resistance (IR) is considered one of the most important parameters of a battery, as it is used to evaluate the battery's power performance, energy efficiency, aging mechanisms or equivalent circuit modeling. In addition, in electric vehicle (EV) applications, the IR provides essential information related with regenerative braking capabilities, dynamic charge and discharge efficiencies, or physical degradation of the battery. This work aims to provide the insight details of the IR of a battery under several testing conditions and methods, to present its practical implications on EVs. The experimental tests are carried out on lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries ranging from 16 Ah to 100 Ah, suitable for its use in EVs. We study the IR dependency with battery's capacity, SOC and the charge/discharge rate; also, the convenience of using a certain IR measurement method is evaluated. Furthermore, the main results are put into context for practical EV applications, to enhance the design of battery management systems (BMS) in relation with the system's energy efficiency.

Abstract:State of charge (SOC) and state of health (SOH) are two significant state parameters for the lithium ion batteries (LiBs). In obtaining these states, the capacity of the battery is an indispensable parameter that is hard to detect directly online. However, there is a strong correlation relationship between this parameter and battery internal resistance. This article first shows a simple and effective online internal resistance detection method. Secondly, the relationship between the measured internal resistance and the LiBs capacity is established by linear fitting. Finally, the capacity through internal resistance conversion is applied in SOC estimation. The estimation results show that this method can effectively enhance the SOC estimation accuracy regardless of temperature change and battery degradation.

Abstract:This paper presents a unique cheaper battery safety test bench for electrical and mechanical performance evaluation of lithium-ion batteries where mechanical performance is tested using software and electrical characteristic is tested using hardware. In this work, simulation of mechanical performance of lithium-ion battery such as thermal modelling test at various temperature has been carried out using Comsol software, where battery voltage and temperature are monitored as a control input during a drive cycle and state of charge of the battery on the positive (65-80%) and a negative electrode (14-29%) is monitored and triggered as a control output. A hardware test bench has been developed to execute various electrical tests for evaluating battery performance during a discharge cycle. These electrical tests have been carried out on the LabVIEW software to obtain real-time data and display the battery related information such as voltage and current curves. Further, a battery safety test like external short circuit test has been performed and also for improving the battery efficiency capacitors are connected parallelly with varied load condition. Overall, in this exploration, a newly evolved, accurate, affordable battery testing and monitoring system has been developed.

Abstract:Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) is widely used in battery modeling and parameter identification. This paper provides a low-cost EIS measurement system based on Labview for electric vehicle batteries, which generate a sinusoidal current excitation with amplitude and frequency under controlled based on the design of a constant current source circuit and a current amplifier circuit. The EIS measurement is implemented by sampling the excitation current and response voltage of the battery under different frequencies and data analyzing. Finally, the measurement system is evaluated experimentally by EIS testing within the frequency range of interest.

Abstract:A switching mode power supply (SMPS)-based lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery test system (BTS) is proposed to meet the increasing demands of tests in battery research. To improve the flexibility, while building the BTS with low cost and high reliability, an SMPS is employed as a charger/discharger, combined with a digital-to-analog hybrid control system to regulate its output voltage and current. Based on the BTS, two dc internal resistance (DCIR) measurement methods are designed, and a battery state classification method based on the DCIR cluster analysis with similarity as the judgment basis is proposed. An experimental prototype is developed to verify the feasibility of the proposed BTS and methods. The results show that the BTS possesses excellent voltage and current regulation capabilities for charging, discharging, and grid energy recovery. The internal parameter extraction method enables obtaining DCIR and other parameters with high accuracy. The online measurement method allows automatic acquisition of real-time DCIR and its variation trend without affecting the charging, which greatly improves the measurement efficiency. The proposed hierarchical clustering method based on DCIR effectively achieves the classification of battery states with excellent practicality and robustness.

Abstract:This paper describes a magnetic latching relay system resistance based on the LabVIEW.The system consists of an arbitrary waveform generator,a GPIB interface card,a digital multimeter,a power amplifier and a PC.The driven signal,generated both by the waveform generator and amplifier,was used to switch the relay between the closed state and the open state continuously.At the same time,the digital multimeter measures the resistance of relay contact corresponding to each state and the data was transferred to PC and recorded constantly.This system has two advantages as follows:Firstly,the programs take full use of the advantages of Labview software such as compatibility,kind human-computer interaction.Secondly,the synchronization between different instruments was achieved by a reasonable trigger signal.The above continuous test data provided a basis for lifetime and failure mechanism of the magnetic latching relay.

Abstract:Internal resistance is usually calculated by EIS (Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy) method, which gives unrealistic low internal resistance values. In this paper internal resistance will be calculated from the voltage drop with FreedomCAR method where the validation of the results is much better (99%) than EIS method[1][12]. Batteries are often tested per cell. But in most cases more than one single cell is needed for an application and the characteristics of a module of cells is not the same. In other cases the whole module is examined as one big cell, without looking on the individual cells. But the weakest cell affects the performance of the whole module. This research goes deeper than the module approach on batteries: the behavior of individual cells is examined while they are working together in a module. The battery model consists in most researches of an ideal voltage source and a simple internal resistance[2]. In this work the advanced FreedomCAR battery model, created by Idaho National Laboratories (USA), is used: the cell is represented by an ideal voltage source with two internal resistances and two capacitors. Usually batteries are tested with very low constant currents (till 5% of the nominal current value) to show a high capacity value to the customer, while the customer needs the characteristics of the battery in real conditions. Here the parameters are calculated by testing the battery packets in high pulse conditions. The matching between the predicted and the measured voltage is proportional with the quality of the model. This was 99% (+-0.9%) in the tests. This means that the model is very close to the reality. Three types of Lithium-ion battery packets with 6-7 cells were tested.

Abstract:In electric and hybrid vehicles, driving performance is strongly influenced by the battery aging effects. For most lithium-ion batteries, the power capability fade caused by battery impedance rise is the main reason for battery end-of-life. In this paper, an online diagnosing method of internal resistance is presented based on equivalent circuit impedance model. Under a special diagnosing signal, voltage response is recorded and the impedance model is parameterized with the help of recursive least square (RLS) algorithm. The values of impedance model are then used for the estimation of power capability and detection of battery end-of-life. The performance of the internal resistance monitoring method is proved in Matlab/Simulink, which shows little error in estimation of battery power capability.

Abstract:The lithium-ion battery is a viable power source for hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) and, more recently, electric vehicles (EVs). Its performance, especially in terms of state of charge (SOC), plays a significant role in the energy management of these vehicles. The extended Kalman filter (EKF) is widely used to estimate online SOC as an efficient estimation algorithm. However, conventional EKF algorithms cannot accurately estimate the difference between individual batteries, which should not be ignored. However, the internal resistance of a battery can represent this difference. Therefore, this work proposes using an EKF with internal resistance measurement based on the conventional algorithm. Lithium-ion battery real-time resistances can help the Kalman filter overcome defects from simplistic battery models. In addition, experimental results show that it is useful to introduce online internal resistance to the estimation of SOC.

Virtual instrumentation based automatic thin film resistivity measurement system

Abstract:Comparing with semiconductor material, thin film samples have smaller resistivity and more fragile texture. Existing four probe measurement equipment could not fulfill the measurement requirements of thin film resistivity. Dual-configuration four-probe method is based on thin layer principle, ignores the influence of scale factor and more suitable for thin film samples, but it requires circuit switching in the measurement process and complex calculation in data processing. Visual instrument technique integrates the measurement device and computer, and the measurement process and data processing are accomplished under program control. In this paper a thin film resistivity measurement system is introduced. The stability of the system is proved by test results and the influences of variable environment factors on measurement results are also described.

Abstract:State-of-charge (SoC) and state-of-health (SoH) define the amount of charge and rated capacity loss of a battery, respectively. In order to determine these two measures, open-circuit voltage (OCV) and internal resistance of the battery are indispensable parameters that are obtained with difficulty through direct measurement. The motivation of this study is to develop an online, simple, training-free, and easily implementable scheme that is capable of estimating such parameters, particularly for the lithium-ion battery in battery-powered vehicles. Based on an equivalent circuit model (ECM), the electrical performance of a battery can be formulated into state-space representation. Also, underdetermined model parameters can be arranged to appear linearly so that an adaptive control approach can be applied. An adaptation algorithm is developed by exploiting the Lyapunov-stability criteria. The OCV and internal resistance can be extracted exactly without limitations of a system input signal, such as persistent excitation (PE), enhancing the method applicability for vehicular power systems. In this study, both simulations and experiments are established to verify the capability and effectiveness of the proposed estimation scheme.

Abstract:Online monitoring of Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) internal temperature (IT) is a mandatory requirement to ensure their safety and longevity. In this article, the second-harmonic current (SHC) that inherently exists in single-phase dc/ac converters is utilized to estimate LIB IT for the first time. First, the SHC needs to be suppressed to the appropriate level as a disturbance signal for online impedance measurement. Then, the dual-channel digital lock-in amplifier is used to calculate LIBs impedance at the second-harmonic frequency (SHF). Moreover, the Pisarenko harmonic decomposition algorithm is adopted to estimate the actual SHF to ensure the accuracy of the impedance calculation. Three commercial 18 650 LIBs are tested at the experimental setup. A strong correlation between the imaginary impedance at SHF and IT is observed, which is nearly not affected by the battery's state of charge. Therefore, an online SHF impedance-based battery IT estimation method is developed. Finally, the validity of the proposed method is confirmed through a comparison between actual and online estimated temperatures.

Abstract:This paper proposes a method for estimating internal resistance (R) of lithium-ion batteries considering R is a function of state of charge (SOC), current rate (I) and battery temperature (T bat ). Based on electrochemical mechanism of the batteries and general tests with a general testbed, the method designs a set of parameter estimation algorithm to estimate R. Compared with other methods such as Hybrid Power Pulse Characterization (HPPC) method with discrete R-SOC results and constant current test (CCT) method with no consideration of T bat influence, this method can provide continuous R-SOC results with more R-SOC information and more accuracy by considering thermal effects. The algorithm details are discussed and test results verify the advantages.

Abstract:In order to obtain the real-time information of power battery and to meet the control requirement by regulating and optimizing the control variables in the controller, the battery monitor and controller calibration system is designed. Whereas serial interface communication has poor anti-jamming capability, low speed, short transmission distance, as well as the complex encoding problems with the CCP calibration method, this paper, based on LabVIEW DSP and global variables bridge, achieved online, real-time monitoring and battery controller calibration. Practical application shows that the system is easy to operate, real-time, and reliable operation.
