Indentifying of nurses′ learning deterrents to participation in continuing nursing education in a tertiary hospital

Abstract:Objective To understand nurses′ learning deterrents to participation in continuing nursing education in tertiary hospitals.Methods A total of 367 nurses of a tertiary hospital were surveyed by using the Chinese version of Deterrents to Participation General Scale (DPS-G).Results The average score of the scale was 2.14±0.62.The subscale of time constraints scored highest (2.84±0.98) and the subscale of lack of confidence scored lowest (1.57±0.60).Of 34 items,the items scored in descending order were inconvenient course schedule (3.05±1.19),irregular participation (2.94±1.27),generalization in some courses (2.87±1.22),inconvenient location for participation (2.84±1.23),and lack of time for studying (2.81±1.26).Learning deterrents of nurses received 30 score credits was more obviously,and they convinced that the courses had no relevance.Conclusion Nurses have deterrents to participation in continuing nursing education;time constraints,lack of course relevance are the two dominant deterrents,lack of interest and confidence are important factors.Nursing managers should take measures targeting these factors to improve nurses′ participation and learning efficiency.
