Abstract:Syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS) was prepared by bulk polymerization with homogeneous metallocene catalystic system, Cp · Ti(OPh) 3 or Cp · Ti(OPhOMe) 3/MAO/TIBA. It was found that a fast crystallization of the produced sPS is very important to avoid gelation of the polymerizing mixture and prepare powdery product. But, it was due to crystallization nucleation mechanism that the morphology of produced particles was very irregular and extraordinarily difficult to manipulate. Adding a little sPS seed during polymerization did not improve particle morphology. However, regular particles with good morphology could be simply prepared by adding a little other polymer. When the added polymer (e.g. mEPDM) was immiscible with the amorphous sPS, spherical particles could be obtained.

Abstract:Preparation of anisotropic particles based on phase separation of prefabricated seeds in polymerizations generally involves multiple process steps. In conventional one-pot dispersion polymerization, only spherical particles are produced. Herein, anisotropic particles with asymmetrical core-shell structure, multiple compartments, and continuously tunable surface roughness and sizes were synthesized by a modified one-pot dispersion polymerization. A mixture of polar solvents, ethylene glycol (EG), and water (6/4, vol.) was used as medium for polymerization of styrene (St). In the presence of ammonium persulfate (APS) and vinyl acetate (VA), divinylbenzene (DVB, 16.1–66.4 %) and (St, 50.3–0 %) were added at 60, 180, and 360 min, respectively. Dense cross-linking was confined to exterior of swollen growing particles, resulting in phase separation and formation of snowman-like particles with coarse, core-shell structured body, and smooth, no or partially cross-linked head. The newly formed compartments were also inhomogeneously cross-linked and their phases separated, producing three and four compartment anisotropic particles with an aspect ratio up to 2.3. Gel content of final particles was less than 75 %. Due to a sequential cross-linking from growing particle to newly formed compartments, reaction stability and particle monodispersity were maintained even when high amounts of DVB were added. Asymmetrical morphologies, structures, sizes, and surface roughness of particles were continuously tuned by varying DVB amount and its start addition time. This one-pot method provides a simple, efficient route for synthesis of anisotropic particles.

Abstract:Previously, synthesis of anisotropic particles by seeded polymerizations has involved multiple process steps. In conventional one-pot dispersion polymerization (Dis.P) with a cross-linker added, only spherical particles are produced due to rapid and high cross-linking. In this Article, a straightforward one-pot preparation of monodisperse anisotropic particles with tunable morphology, dimensions, surface roughness, and asymmetrically distributed functional groups is described. With a cross-linker of divinylbenzene (DVB, 8%), ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA, 6%), or dimethacryloyloxybenzophenone (DMABP, 5%) added at 40 min, shortly after the end of nucleation stage in Dis.P of styrene (St) in methanol and water (6/4, vol), the swollen growing particles are inhomogeneously cross-linked at first. Then, at low gel contents of 59%, 49%, and 69%, corresponding to the cases using DVB, EGDMA, and DMABP, respectively, the growing particle phase separates and snowman- or dumbbell-like particles are generated. Thermodynamic and kinetic analyses reveal that moderate cross-linking and sufficient swelling of growing particles determine the formation and growth of anisotropic particles during polymerization. Morphology, surface roughness, sizes, and cross-linking degrees of each domain of final particles are tuned continuously by varying start addition time and contents of cross-linkers. The snowman-like particles fabricated with DVB have a gradient cross-linking and asymmetrical distribution of pendant vinyl groups from their body to head. The dumbbell-like particles prepared using DMABP have only one domain cross-linked; i.e., only one domain contains photosensitive benzophenone (BP) groups. With addition of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) or propargyl methacrylate (PMA) together with DVB or EGDMA, epoxy or alkynyl groups are asymmetrically incorporated. With the aid of these functional groups, carboxyl, amino, or thiol groups and PEG (200) are attached by thiol-ene (yne) click and photocoupling reactions.

Abstract:The control of the morphology of nanoparticles is a hot issue all over the world.Organic-inorganic materials can be tailor made with an infinite number of architectures and in diverse forms conveniently.A new type of organic inorganic hybrid material was reported to be synthesized by emulsion polymerization by using the monomers which contained alkoxysilane groups.However,polymerization and morphology could hardly be controled during the emulsion process, because the alkoxysilane group was easy to be subjected to hydrolysis and condensation by sol gel process which decreased the stability of the latex.In the present work, organic inorganic hybrid core shell nanoparticles were synthesized by seeded emulsion polymerization.Through morphology design, polystyrene, as seeded cores, was synthesized firstly, then 3 trimethoxysilyl propyl methacrylate (MPS) was added to form MPS styrene copolymer shell on the surface of polystyrene core. Owing to the hydrolysis condensation of organic alkoxysilane groups in MPS,the organic inorganic hybrid shell was formed through sol gel process.The core shell structure was interpreted by thermodynamical representation and characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM).The nonionic surfactant used would decrease the stability of the latex.In acidic condition the latex turned into gel just after the addition of MPS,while,in basic condition the particle number decreased obviously, and the latex kept almost stable in neutral condition.The higher the MPS concentration in the emulsion was,the less stability the latex had.Adding MPS continuously could keep the latex more stable and the particle size could be controlled by this method.Then, the core of this kind of hybrid nanoparticles could be dissolved to yield hollow nanocapsules, with the proportion of the void volume 40 1%.

Abstract:Previously, it was a challenge to develop a direct and convenient synthetic means for production of anisotropic particles, formation of structures (core-shell, cavity, hollow, etc.) and functionalization of domains all at once. Herein, we present a simple one-step dispersion polymerization (Dis.P) approach to synthesize particles with a combination of anisotropies in morphology, surface roughness, structure and composition. This approach needs no delayed addition of agents, and is of comparable simplicity to the preparation of conventional spherical particles. A cross-linker of dimethacryloyloxybenzophenone (DMABP) is added at the beginning of Dis.P of styrene (St). Evolution of monomer conversion, particle gel content and morphology during Dis.P indicates that DMABP is consumed early and rapidly, creating a high cross-linking of a growing particle at a low conversion, thus inducing phase separation and producing snowman-or dumbbell-like particles which contain a firstly cross-linked, coarse growing particle domain (G domain) and an uncross-linked or subsequently cross-linked, smooth, new domain (N domain). The size, surface roughness, structure and composition of the domains are tuned by initially adding various amounts of DMABP and a low amount of functional monomers. Due to the quick reaction of hydrophilic 4-vinylpyridine (4-VP), glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) or methacrylic acid (MAA), the G domain is enriched with pyridyl, epoxy or carboxyl groups, as detected by XPS and EDS. Through the delayed reaction of monomers containing alkynyl groups (-C equivalent to C-), the N domain is enriched with -C equivalent to C-groups, and the core-shell (cross-linked) structure is formed. With aids of thiols added during Dis.P, SH- or fluorine-containing groups are primarily incorporated on the N domain, and the porous, cavity or hollow structure of the N domain is generated due to phase separation between polystyrene (PSt) and the polymer produced by the click reaction. On adding two functional monomers (MAA and monomer containing -C equivalent to C-groups), various functional groups enrich G and N domains, respectively, owing to the sequential reactions of monomers.

Abstract:We have developed a facile approach to synthesize anisotropic Janus hybrid particles by selective modification of bulgy patches on the composite spheres, which are in situ grown by phase separation during seeded emulsion polymerization. Janus particles are achieved by dissolution of the seed polymer particles. It is the key to control phase separation to form multiple bulges and tune their size by pH and monomer fraction. The size of the Janus particles is continuously tunable from submicrometer to nanometer scale. They can be massively synthesized since many bulges are derived from one seed sphere.

Herein, we report incorporation of chloromethyl moieties into a living diatom to prepare an alkyl-halide activated siliceous biotemplate. Abstract:Organic-inorganic hybrid particles have many potential applications, but almost all research has been focused on hybrid particles with one kind of inorganic nanoparticle. This article presents a novel and facile preparation approach for raspberry-like silica/polystyrene/silica multilayer hybrid particles via miniemulsion polymerization. In this method, larger, surface-modified silica particles are first dispersed into monomer droplets to form a miniemulsion, and then raspberry-like silica/polystyrene/silica multilayer hybrid particles are directly obtained when miniemulsion polymerization is performed in the presence of smaller, unmodified silica particles with 4-vinylpyridine as an auxiliary monomer. Abstract:A simple and elegant approach to fabricate anisotropic P(VC-co-AAEM)/PS nanoparticles with controllable morphologies via emulsifier-free seeded emulsion polymerization is presented. Non-cross-linked P(VC-co-AAEM) seeds with hydrophilic surface are first synthesized through copolymerization of vinyl chloride (VC) and acetoacetoxyethyl methacrylate (AAEM), which are used to prepare P(VC-co-AAEM)/PS NPs with multiple bulges by SEP of styrene. Electron microscopy observation indicates that the content of AAEM in seeds is crucial to control the phase separation and morphology of the composite NPs. Moreover, the thermodynamic immiscibility between PVC and PS is the driving force for the formation of PS bulges onto the P(VC-co-AAEM) seeds. The resultant anisotropic NPs with non-cross-linked feature may promisingly serve as compatibilizers for further polymer processing.

Abstract:Functionalized PS/SiO2 composite nanoparticles bearing sulfonic groups on the surface were successfully synthesized via emulsion copolymerization using a polymerizable emulsifier a olefin solfonate (AOS). As demonstrated by transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy, well-defined core-shell PS/SiO2 composite nanoparticles with a diameter of 50 nm were obtained. Sulfonic groups introduced onto the surface of the composite nanoparticles were quantified by FTIR, and can be controlled to some extent via a two-stage procedure.

Abstract:We report the use of nanoparticles to stabilise free radical dispersion polymerisations, without the need for any conventional stabiliser, leading to the preparation of polystyrene nanocomposites. The products are well characterised spherical polymer microparticles decorated with nanoparticles on their surfaces. In this paper we demonstrate the process with Fe3O4nanoparticles yielding a product with a strong magnetic property. By using this in situpolymerisation technique, not only can nanoparticles in aqueous solution be harvested, but also this provides a completely new route to polymer composites. Thus, functional nanoparticles can be immobilised onto the surface of the polymer beads to modify significantly their properties.
Anomalously Shaped Functional Particles Prepared by Thiol-Isocyanate Off-Stoichiometric Click Dispersion Polymerization

Abstract:Anomalously shaped microparticles have attractive advantages in applications. They are usually prepared by chain-growth polymerizations in heterogeneous systems. Recently, thiol-X step-growth polymerizations have been used to produce functional particles with a regular shape but rarely anomalous shapes. Herein, we report the preparation of anomalously shaped particles by thiol-isocyanate dispersion polymerization (Dis.P) in ethanol using polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as a stabilizer and catalyst. Papillae-shaped, raspberry-like, and multibulged particles are prepared by tuning monomer combinations, contents, and feed ratios. Particle morphology evolutions during polymerization are observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Distinct from previous works, particles with residual -SH groups are obtained even with equal moles of monomers added initially. The residue of -SH groups is revealed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) analyses and confirmed by detection with a fluorescent probe containing disulfide linkage. Moreover, fluorescent particle probes are formed by the reaction of excess -NCO groups on particles with fluorescein isothiocyanate isomer I (FITC) and dithioacetal-functionalized perylenediimide (DTPDI). The probes are sensitive in detection of glutathione (GSH) and Hg2+ in water. Hg2+ as low as 1-0.1 ppb is detected using a raspberry-like particle probe with DTPDI.

Abstract:Hollow polystyrene particles were prepared via miniemulsion polymerization of styrene and divinylbenzene adopting the isooctane as hydrophobe, whose structure and properties were characterized using transmission electron microscopy and thermogravimetry. Great attention was paid to the kinetic effects on controlling the particle structure rather than the thermodynamic part. The influence of factors such as divinylbenzene/styrene molar ratio, isooctane content, and the type and amount of initiator on the ultimate structure of polystyrene particles were researched. A similar evolution of the particle structure and an obvious turning point from porous to hollow were both distinctly observed along with the changing in all these parameters. All the phenomena and results can be well illuminated from the diffusion control based on the kinetic viewpoint and especially, it further reveals that the particle structure can be powerfully and effectively controlled under kinetics in a broad sense.
Shape-Tunable Biconcave Disc-Like Polymer Particles by Swelling-Induced Phase Separation of Seeded Particles with Hydrophilic Shells

Abstract:Anisotropic shape-tunable polymer particles have gained significant attention for their wide applications, and their performances are usually strongly correlated to their shapes. In contrast to convex particles, the synthesis of highly uniform concave polymer particles remains a great challenge. Here, we present a facile and effective route to synthesize biconcave polystyrene (PS) discs by swelling-induced phase separation of hydrophilically modified PS microspheres and report an unexpected finding that even a tiny amount of hydrophilic units that were incorporated into PS microspheres can significantly change the shape of phase interfaces, resulting in the transformation of disc shapes from convex to flat to concave. This is realized by several typical hydrophilic monomers, such as sodium styrene sulfonate (NaSS), acrylic acid (AA), or (2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl)trimethylammonium chloride (METAC). The effect of the distribution of hydrophilic units in microspheres was investigated, and the mechanism of shape tuning has been discussed. The curvatures of the bottom surfaces of discs show a strong correlation to the content of hydrophilic units. In particular, we emphasize that the shape control method is general since it does not depend on specific hydrophilic units. This research paves the way for precisely structuring polymer particle shapes, which is important for polymer particles to be used for self-assembly, diffusion, rheology, transport, filler, and many other applications.

Abstract:The electrospraying process has been exploited in recent times to prepare micro- and nano-scaled polymer based particulate structures for a range of biomedical and pharmaceutical applications. Conventionally, three main parameters (applied voltage, flow rate and base solvent in processing polymeric media) are used to manipulate their morphologies during preparation (size, surface and porosity). In this work, an unconventional approach is demonstrated to yield biocompatible core-shell encapsulated (poly-epsilon-caprolactone (PCL) and silicon oil) particles with a range of structural morphologies (Le, spherical, hemi-spherical and oblate shaped). Retaining its advantageous single-step fabrication aspect and by using two co-axial needles, a range of collection media was used to demonstrate shape and size variation (from similar to 28-48 mu m) using optical and scanning electron microscopy. The morphological variation is directly linked to surface tension of the collection liquid. In addition, the non-volatile and flexible nature of the oil core plays a role in geometry formation. In vitro release from these structures demonstrates significant and non-significant variations; providing pathways to control release as well mimic release profile but alter other biomedical process (e.g. ultrasound). These findings demonstrate an alternative approach to manipulate the shape of bi-phasic structures which is an important functional property in several biomedical remits (e.g. drug delivery and ultrasound).[GRAPHICS]. Abstract:We report a general emulsion approach to protrude a lobe by swelling the polymer core from a core–shell structure, achieving anisotropic Janus composite particles with tunable chemistry, shape, size, and size ratio of the two parts thus Janus balance. Oil-in-water emulsion is employed to swell a polymer core through the crack open hole within the shell, and the core protrusion is restricted in the particle/oil confined compartments enveloped with surfactant. When monomers are used as the oil solvents, cross-linking can strengthen the polymer lobe to tolerate against organic solvents. By tuning polymerization time and monomer/particle weight ratio, the size ratio of the polymer/inorganic parts thus Janus balance of the composite particles is continuously tunable across from more hydrophilic to more lipophilic. The robust anisotropic particles with tunable Janus balance can be further used as solid surfactants to tune microstructure of emulsions.

Abstract:We develop a new method for preparing polymer blend particles with dual-phase morphology based on a phase inversion emulsion process. Using this method, the polystyrene (PS)/ethylene–vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymer particles were prepared and analyzed. The preparation procedure included a emulsification of liquid styrene monomer with dissolved EVA and a following free radical polymerization to convert the monomer droplets into solid blend particles.The obtained PS/EVA particles had a dual-phase morphology. With increasing EVA content, the structure of EVA dispersed in PS matrix switched from spherical, stripe to nearly co-continuous morphology and the particles become significantly tougher and the maximum impact strength reached 9.13 KJ/m 2 . This method provides the opportunity to prepare a number of new kinds of polymer blend particles with tailored performance even though the composed polymers are condensation polymers or unreachable at atmospheric pressure.

Abstract:A series of SiO2/PMMA composite particles with different morphologies were prepared by conventional emulsion polymerization by the aid of acid-base interaction between the silanol groups of unmodified silica particles and the amino groups of 4-vinylpyridine. In this approach, no surface treatment for nanosilica particles was required. The morphologies of composite particles, for example, multicore-shell, raspberry-like, and conventional core-shell, could be controlled by modulating emulsifier content, monomer/silica ratio, silica size, and monomer feed method. Abstract:A facile technique with only one step for fabrication of anisotropic colloidal particles at the air/water interface is demonstrated. Anisotropic colloidal particles with controlled shapes can be easily obtained by tuning the incubation time in solvent vapor at room temperature. The formation of separate anisotropic particles is attributed to the lateral stretch on the particles by the interfacial forces and repulsion among the neighboring particles by the generation of the polymer solution flows. To further explain the proposed formation mechanism of the colloidal particles with shape anisotropy, an in situ experiment is designed for direct observation of the arrangement change of the colloidal particles. This fabrication technique is general and applicable to polymer colloidal particles with various initial sizes ranging from microscale to nanoscale. Moreover, the elastic properties of the anisotropic colloidal particles are measured which exhibit a prominent change with different shapes and the change trend of the elastic moduli is similar for particles with different original sizes. This work provides a versatile approach for fabrication of anisotropic colloidal particles with tunable shapes and sizes and establishes the interplay between particle shape and elastic property, which is much valuable for further research on the effect of particle parameters on drug delivery process.
