Abstract:Four oligoanthranilamides 1-4, which are incorporated with three, five, seven, or nine benzene units, respectively, have been synthesized and characterized. X-ray analysis, 1D and 2D H-1 NMR, and IR experiments reveal that all the new oligoamides adopt rigid, planar and zigzagged conformations in both solution and solid state, which are stabilized by intramolecular three-center hydrogen bonding. A 5-mer oligomer 22, which is incorporated with two acetylene groups at the ends, has also been synthesized and utilized for the self-assembly of a rigid hydrogen-bonded metallocyclophane. The new rigid oligoanthranilamides represent useful building blocks for the construction of supramolecular architectures.
Electronic Structures and Spectroscopic Properties of the Self-assembly Complexes for Dipyridone

Abstract:The DFT and semiempirical methods were utilized to study the structures and spectra of the self-assembly complexes formed by dipyridone derivatives. The complexes with the negative binding energies could be formed via hydrogen bonding between two monomers. Due to the presence of the electron-donating substituents on the monomers, the bind- ing affinities of the complexes were generally increased. Simultaneously, the LUMO-HOMO energy gaps of the com- plexes were widened, and the first absorptions in the electronic spectra were blue-shifted relative to that of the monomer. As the hydrogen bonds were formed, the IR stretching vibrations of the N-H bonds in the complexes were weakened. The chemical shifts of the carbon atoms on the C=O bonds were changed downfield under the effect of the electron-donating groups.

Abstract:The self-assembly complexes formed by 2-pyridone derivatives were theoretically studied by the AM1 and DFT methods to determine their binding energies. The UV, IR, and NMR spectra of the complexes were calculated using the INDO/CIS, AM1, and B3LYP/3-21G methods, respectively. It was shown that the complexes could be formed by two monomers via double hydrogen bonding thanks to the negative binding energy. The affinity for binding was increased by substituents in the monomers. But this stimulating effect depended on the simultaneous influence of the electronic and steric effects. The first absorption bands in the UV spectra of the complexes were blue-shifted relative to that of the monomer because of their larger LUMO-HOMO energy gaps. As hydrogen bonds were formed, the N-H stretching vibrations of the monomers were weakened in the IR spectra of the complexes. And the chemical shifts of the C=C and C≡C carbon atoms were shifted downfield in the 13C NMR spectra.

Abstract:Six intramolecular hydrogen bonding-induced aromatic amide foldamers have been prepared through the formation of the hydrazone bond in the last step. The compounds are attached with one trifluoroiodobenzene as halogen donor and one pyridine ring as halogen bonding acceptor. Intermolecular I center dot center dot center dot N halogen bond formed by the above two units and other kinds of halogen bonds are designed to modulate the stacking of the compounds in the solid state. It is revealed that intermolecular halogen bonding can induce the molecules to form extended zigzag arrays, dimeric macrocycles or supramolecular helices. The formation of the dimeric macrocycles is favored when the halogen bond donor and acceptor are located in a parallel manner. Longer tetrameric and pentameric sequences give rise to more curved, crescent conformations, with the two halogen bonding donor and acceptor on the ends to form a large angle. For two compounds, polar methanol or water prevents the formation of the intermolecular end-to-end halogen bonding by forming I center dot center dot center dot O halogen bonding. The pentameric compound is connected by methanol to form supramolecular single helices. For another pentameric compound, strong I center dot center dot center dot O=C halogen bonding is found to induce the backbone to self-assemble into supramolecular single helices. The single helices further stack to afford supramolecular double helix arrays.

Abstract:In this study, the abundant co-assemblies of three rigid pyridine derivatives (PDPD, BisPY and TPYB) and tetracarboxylic acid (H4BTY) are constructed and explored with the assistance of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. By examining the self-assembly of H4BTY and co-assemblies of H4BTY and three different pyridine derivatives, the driving mechanisms of those assemblies are contemplated. Firstly, H4BTY self-assembles into quadrilateral structure at interface and then the self-assembly structure exhibits various responses when different pyridine derivatives (PDPD, BisPY and TPYB) were added. Bipyridine PDPD molecule with shorter conjugate length constructs classical acid-pyridine-acid two-dimensional co-assembly structure by forming O-H...N hydrogen bonds. As for longer bipyridine molecule BisPY, novel acid-pyridine-pyridine-acid two-dimensional co-assembly structure is formed at interface by O-H...N hydrogen bonds and π-π interaction. With regard to tripyridine molecule TPYB, three pyridine groups interact with carboxyl group or phenyl group, and finally three different co-assemblies are formed at interface. Such structural regulatory behaviors may be ascribed to the different intermolecular and intramolecular interactions of co-assemblies. The regulations of pyridine derivatives on carboxylic acid assembly structures could be advantageous to the construction of functional nanostructures and the explorations of co-assembly mechanisms in molecular nanostructures.

Abstract:Halogen bonding has been used to glue together hydrogen-bonded short arylamide foldamers to achieve new supramolecular double and quadruple helices in the solid state. Three compounds, which bear a pyridine at one end and either a CF2 I or fluorinated iodobenzene group at the other end, engage in head-to-tail N⋅⋅⋅I halogen bonds to form one-component supramolecular P and M helices, which stack to afford supramolecular double-stranded helices. One of the double helices can dimerize to form a G-quadruplex-like supramolecular quadruple helix. Another symmetric compound, which bears a pyridine at each end, binds to ICF2 CF2 I through N⋅⋅⋅I halogen bonds to form two-component supramolecular P and M helices, with one turn consisting of four (2+2) molecules. Half of the pyridine-bearing molecules in two P helices and two M helices stack alternatingly to form another supramolecular quadruple helix. Another half of the pyridine-bearing molecules in such quadruple helices stack alternatingly with counterparts from neighboring quadruple helices, leading to unique quadruple helical arrays in two-dimensional space.

Abstract:Intramolecular three-centered hydrogen bonding has been used to induce dipyridyl anthranilamide 5 and diphenylacetylene anthranilamide 11 to adopt rigid straight conformation. Compound 5 reacted with Pd(dppp)(OTf)2 (12a) or Pt(dppp)(OTf)2 (12b) in dichloromethane to afford square metallocyclophanes 13a and 13b in 70% and 40% yield, respectively. In contrast, the reaction of 11 with 12b in dichloromethane gave triangular metallocyclophane 14 in 15% yield.

Abstract:Two new hydrazide-based quadruple hydrogen-bonding motifs are described. Dipodals based on these two motifs are revealed to form supramolecular polymers, which can further aggregate to form vesicles and/or organogels in hydrocarbons. The quadruple hydrogen-bonding motifs are characterized by the Xray diffraction and (2D) H-1 NMR experiments, while the vesicles and organogels are evidenced by SEM, AFM TEM, and fluorescent microscopy. Abstract:In a preliminary letter (Tetrahedron Lett. 2010, 51, 188), we reported two new hydrazide-based quadruple hydrogen-bonding motifs, this is, two monopodal (la and 1b) and five dipodal (2a, 2b and 3a-3c) aromatic hydrazide derivatives, and the formation of supramolecular polymers and vesicles from the dipodal motifs in hydrocarbons. In this paper, we present a full picture on the properties of these hydrogen-bonding motifs with an emphasis on their self-assembling behaviors in aqueous media. SEM, AFM, TEM and fluorescent micrographs indicate that all the dipodal compounds also form vesicles in polar methanol and water-methanol (up to 50% of water) mixtures. Control experiments show that 1b does not form vesicles in same media. Addition of 1b to the solution of the dipodal compounds inhibits the latter's capacity of forming vesicles. At high concentrations, 3b and 3c also gelate discrete solvents, including hydrocarbons, esters, methanol, and methanol-water mixture. Concentration-dependent SEM investigations reveal that the vesicles of 3b and 3c fuse to form gels and the gel of 3c can de-aggregate to form the vesicles reversibly.
Self-assembly of Supramolecular Planar Macrocycle Driven by Intermolecular Halogen Bonding

Abstract:The design and synthesis of three kinds of arylamide molecules (compounds 1 similar to 3) containing halogen bonding donor and acceptor fragments, and the exploration and analyzation of different action modes of halogen bonding in solid phase were reported. Compounds 1 and 2 contain two tetrafluoroiodobenzene fragments, and compound 1 also contains a halogen receptor fragment-pyridine group. Isobutyl groups are introduced into the molecule to increase its solubility and crystallinity. And a pyrimidine fragment was introduced into compound 3, which has more aromatic rings. The two N atoms of the pyrimidine fragment can theoretically form intramolecular hydrogen bonds with the adjacent amide hydrogen atoms (-C(=O)NH), so that the whole molecule has the properties of hydrogen-bonded arylamide foldamer. Moreover, trifluoro-benzene fragments were selected in compound 3 to eliminate the repulsion between excess fluorine atoms and carbonyls. The crystal structures reveal that the three aromatic rings in compound 1 are twisted with each other for there is no intramolecular hydrogen bond, and a supramolecular DNA-like double helix was assembled controlled by intermolecular N center dot center dot center dot I and O center dot center dot center dot I halogen bonds arranged alternately. Compound 2 failed to form an intramolecular three-center hydrogen bonding due to the repulsion between the amide carbonyl groups and the two fluorine atoms in close proximity. As expected, in the solid phase of compound 3, an effective three-center hydrogen bond is formed between the terminal trifluoroiodobenzene and the benzene ring attached to it. Moreover, the two N-H bonds connected to the pyrimidine ring also form two effective three-center hydrogen bonds. The difference is that the participants of these two groups of three-center hydrogen bonds include two N atoms in the pyrimidine ring. The four aromatic rings in compound 3 are nearly coplanar driven by these intramolecular three-center hydrogen bonds. Two sets of strong intermolecular (pyridine ring) N center dot center dot center dot I halogen bonds control the formation of [1+1] bimolecular supramolecular macrocycles with inner diameters of 1.36 nm and 1.07 nm in length and width. Moreover, the supramolecular macrocycle is near-planar due to the introduction of pyrimidine ring.

Abstract:The synthesis and characterization of three new supramolecular complexes 6-8 (a rhomboid and two hexagons) via coordination-driven self-assembly are reported in excellent yields (> 90%). These assemblies have 2,6-di(4,4'-dipyridyl)9-thiabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane 2 as the bridging tecton. All assemblies were characterized by multinuclear NMR (H-1 and P-31), mass spectrometry (ESI- MS and ESI-FT-ICR), and elemental analysis. The X-ray structure of the 120 tecton 2 is also discussed.

Abstract:The self-assembly of a novel series of hydrogen bonding-mediated homodimers in chloroform-d has been described. Six anthranilamide-based monomers have been prepared, in which two self-binding formamido, trifluoroacetamido, acetamido, butyl or methyl ureido units are introduced at the two ends of the backbones. Quantitative 1H NMR investigations in chloroform-d revealed that the formamido and ureido units are more efficient than acetamido to induce the formation of stable homodimers. The association constants of all the new homodimers have been determined by 1H NMR dilution method. Multiply hydrogen bonding-driven binding patterns have been proposed for the homodimers. It is also found that ureido-derived homodimers do not adopt common linear binding pattern observed for simple urea derivatives.

Abstract:This paper describes the synthesis, self-assembly, and characterization of a new class of highly stable hydrazide-based quadruply hydrogen-bonded heterodimers. All of the hydrazide-derived heterodimers possess the complementary ADDA-DAAD hydrogen-bonding sequences. Hydrazide derivatives 1, which has two intramolecular S(6) RO.H-N hydrogen bonds, and 2 complex to afford two fastly exchanging isomeric heterodimers 1.2 and 1.2' in chloroform, as a result of two different conformational arrangements of 2. An average binding constant K(assoc) of 4.7 x 10(4) M(-)(1) was determined for heterodimer 1.2 and 1.2' by (1)H NMR titration of 1 with changing 2 in chloroform-d. In contrast, 1 binds 11 and 12, both of which are introduced with two intramolecular S(6) hydrogen bonds, to exclusively afford heterodimers 1.11 and 1.12, with K(assoc) values of 1.8 x 10(4) and 5.0 x 10(2) M(-)(1), respectively. Fluorine-containing 19, which has a hydrazide skeleton identical to that of 1 but two intramolecular S(6) F.H-N hydrogen bonds, can also complex with 2, 11, and 12, to afford heterodimers 19.2, 19.2', 19.11, and 19.12, with K(assoc) values of of 1.2 x 10(4) (average value for 19.2 and 19.2'), 5.4 x 10(3), and 1.9 x 10(2) M(-)(1), respectively. The structures of the new heterodimers have been proven with NOESY, IR, and VPO (for some of the heterodimers) experiments. Moreover, 1 and 19 can also strongly bind 2,7-dilauroylamido-1,8-naphthyridine 23 to afford dimers 1.23 and 19.23 with K(assoc) values of 6.0 x 10(5) and 1.4 x 10(5) M(-)(1), respectively. Adding 1 to the 1:1 solution of 23 and 1-octyl-3-(4-oxo-3,4-dihydro-pyrido[2,3-d]pyrimidin-2-yl)urea 24 or 1-octyl-3-(4-oxo-1,4-dihydro-pyrimidin-2-yl)urea 25, which had been developed initially by Zimmerman and Meijer, respectively, induces dimers 23.24 and 23.25 to dissociate, leading to the formation of dimers 1.23 and 24.24 or 25.25, respectively. The new hydrazide-based hydrogen-bonding modules described are useful building blocks for self-assembly and open a new avenue to recognition between discrete supramolecular species.

Abstract:This paper describes the dynamic covalent assembly of three mono-, bi- and trimacrocycles by utilizing hydrogen bonding-driven zigzag anthranilamides as "leading" components. The monomacrocycle, a tetraamino molecule, was prepared from the [2+2] coupling reaction of a "U"-shaped dialdehyde and a porphyrin diamine, followed by the reduction of the macrocyclic tetraimine by NaBH3CN, while the bi- and trimacrocycles were obtained through two six-component coupling reactions with rigid tri- and tetraamino-appended oligomers as templates.

Abstract:4,4'-(9-Fluorenylidene)diphenol (FDP) and/or 4,4'-cyclohexylidenebisphenol (CBP) is crystallized with bipyridine bases 4,4'-bipyridyl (bipy), 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane (bipy-eta), 1,2-di(4-pyridyl)ethylene (dipy-ete), and 4,4'-dipyridyl N,N'-dioxide (dipy-dox) to afford molecular complexes (FDP)-(bipy) 1, (FDP)-(bipy-eta)(0.5) 2, (FDP)(2)- (dipy-ete) 3, (FDP)-(dipy-dox) 4, and (CBP)-(bipy) 5. The crystal structures of 1-5 have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. All these molecular complexes exhibit polymeric supramolecular structures via O-H---N or O-H---O hydrogen-bonding. I forms double helices. 2 forms an infinite honeycomblike supramolecular structure. 3 forms a brick supramolecular structure. 4 forms an X-shaped supramolecular structure. 5 forms a single strand infinite helix. Thus, by changing the guest molecule, we can obtain different supramolecular hydrogen-bonded polymers through interactions of host-guest systems.
