Abstract:Six intramolecular hydrogen bonding-induced aromatic amide foldamers have been prepared through the formation of the hydrazone bond in the last step. The compounds are attached with one trifluoroiodobenzene as halogen donor and one pyridine ring as halogen bonding acceptor. Intermolecular I center dot center dot center dot N halogen bond formed by the above two units and other kinds of halogen bonds are designed to modulate the stacking of the compounds in the solid state. It is revealed that intermolecular halogen bonding can induce the molecules to form extended zigzag arrays, dimeric macrocycles or supramolecular helices. The formation of the dimeric macrocycles is favored when the halogen bond donor and acceptor are located in a parallel manner. Longer tetrameric and pentameric sequences give rise to more curved, crescent conformations, with the two halogen bonding donor and acceptor on the ends to form a large angle. For two compounds, polar methanol or water prevents the formation of the intermolecular end-to-end halogen bonding by forming I center dot center dot center dot O halogen bonding. The pentameric compound is connected by methanol to form supramolecular single helices. For another pentameric compound, strong I center dot center dot center dot O=C halogen bonding is found to induce the backbone to self-assemble into supramolecular single helices. The single helices further stack to afford supramolecular double helix arrays.

Abstract:A hydrogen bonding approach has been developed to facilitate the self-assembly of a new series of rigid and planar metallocyclophanes. Two new anthranilamide derivatives 1 and 2, which are incorporated with two acetylene units, respectively, have been synthesized and characterized. X-ray analysis (for 1), 1D and 2D 1H NMR and IR experiments reveal that, due to the formation of intramolecular three-centered hydrogen bonding, both compounds adopt rigid and planar conformations with the two acetylene units located at the same side of the anthranilamide skeleton. Two new metallocyclophanes 17 and 18 have been constructed in moderate yields from the reaction of 1 and 2 with trans-Pt(PEt3)2Cl2, respectively, in dichloromethane in the presence of diethylamine and cupric chloride. Fluorescent and 1H NMR investigations reveal that both 17 and 18 can efficiently complex mono- and disaccharide derivatives in chloroform, with a binding selectivity for disaccharides, which is driven by intermolecular hydrogen bonding.

Abstract:The crystal structures of three intramolecularly hydrogen bonded rigid aromatic amide derivatives, which all bear one iodine atom at one end as the donor and one pyridine unit at the other end as the acceptor, have been described to reveal the utility of halogen bonding in inducing the formation of supramolecular macrocycles. All the three compounds formed intermolecular I center dot center dot center dot N halogen bonding. For short compound 1, halogen bonding induced the formation of an extended supramolecular array. For longer folded compounds 2 and 3, halogen bonding could hold two molecules to form supramolecular macrocycles even by adopting a highly distorted, energetically less favorable conformation (for 3). Depending on the solvent for the growth of crystals, compound 3 could also gave rise to a halogen bonded supramolecular double helix. Abstract:Four oligoanthranilamides 1-4, which are incorporated with three, five, seven, or nine benzene units, respectively, have been synthesized and characterized. X-ray analysis, 1D and 2D H-1 NMR, and IR experiments reveal that all the new oligoamides adopt rigid, planar and zigzagged conformations in both solution and solid state, which are stabilized by intramolecular three-center hydrogen bonding. A 5-mer oligomer 22, which is incorporated with two acetylene groups at the ends, has also been synthesized and utilized for the self-assembly of a rigid hydrogen-bonded metallocyclophane. The new rigid oligoanthranilamides represent useful building blocks for the construction of supramolecular architectures.
Self-assembly of Supramolecular Planar Macrocycle Driven by Intermolecular Halogen Bonding

Abstract:The design and synthesis of three kinds of arylamide molecules (compounds 1 similar to 3) containing halogen bonding donor and acceptor fragments, and the exploration and analyzation of different action modes of halogen bonding in solid phase were reported. Compounds 1 and 2 contain two tetrafluoroiodobenzene fragments, and compound 1 also contains a halogen receptor fragment-pyridine group. Isobutyl groups are introduced into the molecule to increase its solubility and crystallinity. And a pyrimidine fragment was introduced into compound 3, which has more aromatic rings. The two N atoms of the pyrimidine fragment can theoretically form intramolecular hydrogen bonds with the adjacent amide hydrogen atoms (-C(=O)NH), so that the whole molecule has the properties of hydrogen-bonded arylamide foldamer. Moreover, trifluoro-benzene fragments were selected in compound 3 to eliminate the repulsion between excess fluorine atoms and carbonyls. The crystal structures reveal that the three aromatic rings in compound 1 are twisted with each other for there is no intramolecular hydrogen bond, and a supramolecular DNA-like double helix was assembled controlled by intermolecular N center dot center dot center dot I and O center dot center dot center dot I halogen bonds arranged alternately. Compound 2 failed to form an intramolecular three-center hydrogen bonding due to the repulsion between the amide carbonyl groups and the two fluorine atoms in close proximity. As expected, in the solid phase of compound 3, an effective three-center hydrogen bond is formed between the terminal trifluoroiodobenzene and the benzene ring attached to it. Moreover, the two N-H bonds connected to the pyrimidine ring also form two effective three-center hydrogen bonds. The difference is that the participants of these two groups of three-center hydrogen bonds include two N atoms in the pyrimidine ring. The four aromatic rings in compound 3 are nearly coplanar driven by these intramolecular three-center hydrogen bonds. Two sets of strong intermolecular (pyridine ring) N center dot center dot center dot I halogen bonds control the formation of [1+1] bimolecular supramolecular macrocycles with inner diameters of 1.36 nm and 1.07 nm in length and width. Moreover, the supramolecular macrocycle is near-planar due to the introduction of pyrimidine ring.

Abstract:Halogen bonding has been used to glue together hydrogen-bonded short arylamide foldamers to achieve new supramolecular double and quadruple helices in the solid state. Three compounds, which bear a pyridine at one end and either a CF2 I or fluorinated iodobenzene group at the other end, engage in head-to-tail N⋅⋅⋅I halogen bonds to form one-component supramolecular P and M helices, which stack to afford supramolecular double-stranded helices. One of the double helices can dimerize to form a G-quadruplex-like supramolecular quadruple helix. Another symmetric compound, which bears a pyridine at each end, binds to ICF2 CF2 I through N⋅⋅⋅I halogen bonds to form two-component supramolecular P and M helices, with one turn consisting of four (2+2) molecules. Half of the pyridine-bearing molecules in two P helices and two M helices stack alternatingly to form another supramolecular quadruple helix. Another half of the pyridine-bearing molecules in such quadruple helices stack alternatingly with counterparts from neighboring quadruple helices, leading to unique quadruple helical arrays in two-dimensional space.

Abstract:Intramolecular hydrogen bonding in oligomeric aromatic amides may induce the backbones to adopt folded, zigzag, or other extended conformations, depending on the positions of the amide units and the hydrogen-bonding sites on the aromatic rings. This article summarizes our efforts in exploring the applications of this family of preorganized oligomers in supramolecular and materials chemistry. Several series of preorganized frameworks or foldamers have been developed as efficient acyclic receptors for binding both neutral and ionic guests. The backbones have been modified with discrete functional groups from the ends or the side chains. The resulting molecules have been applied for designing new molecular tweezers, assembling ordered supramolecular architectures (organogels and vesicles), and directing the formation of complicated macrocyclic and capsular systems. When the hydrogen-bonded folded segments are connected to n-butyl methacrylate copolymers as cross-links, the resulting copolymers display unique reversible mechanical properties owing to the breaking and recovering of the intramolecular hydrogen bonds. When the folded segments are incorporated into the dumbbell components of the donor–acceptor interaction-based pseudo[2]rotaxanes and [2]rotaxanes, they are capable of tuning the slippage/deslippage and switching of the ring component between the discrete “stations” in their dumbbell component.

Abstract:This paper describes the multicomponent dynamic covalent assembly of macrocyclic structures by utilizing hydrogen bonding-driven zigzag anthranilamides as "leading" components. Two or three amino groups have been introduced to one side of hydrogen bonded anthranilamide oligomers. The preorganization of the frameworks enabled the amino groups to condense with structurally matched aldehydes to form mono- and bimacrocycles in good to quantitative yields. Reactions from Lip to five components have been investigated. which involved one-step formation of up to six imine bonds. The preorganization of the templates highly enhanced the stability of the macrocyclic structures. As a result, all the macrocycles Could be purified by simply recrystallizing the Crude products from suitable solvents. Coexisting experiments of three series of three to five components were also performed, which all revealed that the preorganized precursors possessed high self-sorting capacity. On the basis of the same approach, a hydrazone-based macrocycle was also prepared quantitatively, while an intermacrocycle hydrazone-imine exchange was revealed to facilitate the formation of the hydrazone-based macrocycle from an imine-based macrocycle.

Abstract:In this study, a benzoselenadiazole- and pyridine-bifunctionalized hydrogen-bonded arylamide foldamer was synthesized. A co-crystallization experiment with 1,4-diiodotetrafluorobenzene showed that a new type of supramolecular double helices, which were induced by three orthogonal interactions, namely, three-center hydrogen bonding (O⋯H⋯O), I⋯N halogen bonding and Se⋯N chalcogen bonding, have been constructed in the solid state. This work presents a novel instance of multiple non-covalent interactions that work together to construct supramolecular architectures.

Abstract:This Personal Account summarizes the development of the design of hydrogen-bonding-driven aromatic foldamers and their applications in supramolecular chemistry. This account begins with a short, non-exhaustive description of the background in the study of hydrogen-bonded aromatic foldamers. The construction of foldamers from discrete aromatic residues, including amide, urea, hydrazide and 1,2,3-triazole units, is then described. In the following parts, the applications of such compact aromatic oligomers in supramolecular chemistry, including the development of acyclic receptors, the construction of hybrid helical sequences through intramolecular stacking, the promotion of the formation of covalently and noncovalently bonded macrocycles, the tuning of the mechanical properties of copolymers, and the regulation of the shuttling behavior of [2]rotaxanes and the controlled release of dye from reverse vesicles formed from them, are described. In the final part, the binding-induced folding of conformationally flexible aromatic amide oligomers and their self-binding are described.

The monomacrocycle, a tetraamino molecule, was prepared from the [2+2] coupling reaction of a "U"-shaped dialdehyde and a porphyrin diamine, followed by the reduction of the macrocyclic tetraimine by NaBH3CN, while the bi- and trimacrocycles were obtained through two six-component coupling reactions with rigid tri- and tetraamino-appended oligomers as templates.

Abstract:Hydrogen bonded aryl amide and hydrazide foldamers may adopt folded or helical, zigzag, straight or other extended conformations, depending on the positions of the amides and hydrogen bonding acceptors on the aromatic rings. Because of the relatively high strength of hydrogen bonding and the intrinsic planarity of the arylamide units, this family of amide oligomers usually possesses highly predictable conformations. The frameworks themselves can be conveniently constructed via simple amide coupling reactions, while discrete functional groups can be introduced to the frameworks or appended side chains at required positions. Thus, in the past few years, we have focused on their applications in designing new molecular tweezers, for generating well-defined and functional supramolecular systems, including organogels, vesicles and liquid crystals, and for directing the formation of complicated macrocyclic systems. More recently, we have found that hydrogen bonding-driven folded segments can also be incorporated into polymers to reversibly tune their mechanical property through the breaking and recovering of the intramolecular hydrogen bonds. This Mini Account summarizes our recent efforts along this line.

Abstract:Hydrogen bonding-induced aromatic amide oligomers may adopt folded, helical, extended or zigzag conformations. This feature of structural preorganization can be utilized to promote the formation of macrocycles. When reactive groups are introduced at the ends of the aromatic amide backbones, the preorganization of the backbones may induce them to adopt discrete required spatial orientations. When macrocyclization concerns the formation of irreversible covalent, carbon-metal and coordination bonds, preorganization may facilitate the formation of specifically designed macrocycles. When macrocyclization involves the formation of reversible covalent bonds such as imine and hydrazone, rationally designed macrocycles may be produced in high or even quantitative yields after the reactions achieve equilibrium and are controlled thermodynamically.

Abstract:This paper describes the synthesis of two series of rigid macrocycles from hydrogen bonding-induced folded aryl amide and hydrazone oligomers that bear two amines or one amine and one aldehyde. The diamines reacted with diacyl chloride to produce amide macrocycles, whereas the latter underwent self-coupling reactions to afford imine macrocycles. DFT calculations revealed that the new macrocycles possess rigid planar conformations and their cavity diameters were estimated to be 1.86 nm-2.75 nm. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The self-assembly of a novel series of hydrogen bonding-mediated homodimers in chloroform-d has been described. Six anthranilamide-based monomers have been prepared, in which two self-binding formamido, trifluoroacetamido, acetamido, butyl or methyl ureido units are introduced at the two ends of the backbones. Quantitative 1H NMR investigations in chloroform-d revealed that the formamido and ureido units are more efficient than acetamido to induce the formation of stable homodimers. The association constants of all the new homodimers have been determined by 1H NMR dilution method. Multiply hydrogen bonding-driven binding patterns have been proposed for the homodimers. It is also found that ureido-derived homodimers do not adopt common linear binding pattern observed for simple urea derivatives.

Abstract:This paper describes a novel, highly efficient approach to the self-assembly of monomacrocycles and two-layered capsules by using dynamic covalent chemistry. Intramolecular hydrogen-bonding was used to preorganize aromatic amide-based monomers that contain aldehyde and tert-butoxycarbonylamino units. As a result, in the presence of an excess of trifluoroacetic acid (TFA), four monomers could self-couple to produce macrocycles selectively through the formation of three imine or hydrazone bonds. Three dipodal precursors were also prepared by connecting two hydrogen-bonded segments with a flexible linker. In the presence of TFA, these precursors could also self-couple, leading to the exclusive formation of two-layered capsules. As a result of intramolecular hydrogen-bonding, all the macrocycles and capsules were stable in solution and could be purified by simple recrystallization. The new capsules were able to form complexes with linear propylenediammonium derivatives to give unique two-layered pseudo[3]rotaxanes.
The Self-assembly of Folding Architectures and Their Applications in Molecular Recognition

Abstract:Foldamers are linear molecules that are driven by collective noncovalent forces to fold into a conformationally ordered state in a solution or solid state. Three kinds of foldamers have been designed,synthesized and characterized, which include: ( 1 ) solvophobically-driven oligo (ethylene glycol) helical foldamers, (2) hydrogen bonded oligohydrazide foldamers and (3) hydrogen-bonded porphyrin-appended foldamers. The qualitative and quantitative investigations by NMR, UV-vis, fluorescent, and circular dichroism spectroscopy revealed that these foldamers can act as efficient receptors for discrete kinds of organic molecules and ions in different organic solvents. The supramolecular chiral induction or amplification has also been investigated for the hydrogen bonded folding systems.
