Abstract:In order to explore whether gender stereotypes existing in Chinese magazine advertisements,the study examined the portrayal of men and women in 8 categories by conducting content analysis of the central figure in the 13 kinds of the mass magazine advertisements in China.The results showed that men and women varied significantly in age,concern for their own appearance,credibility,role and product categories.Women varied significantly on level of sexism.

Abstract:At first, this article introduced the related concepts of gender stereotypes and the theoretical base of the researches on the gender stereotypes in television advertisements. The article reviewed the researches on the gender stereotypes in television advertisements from the points of view of the content analysis and audience’s response. The results of content analysis showed that despite the feminist movement for more than 20 years, the gender stereotypes in television advertisements had not been reduced yet and it was universal around the world. The results of audience’s response showed that audience’s response to the gender stereotypes in television advertisements was a complex process and was influenced by many factors, such as sex, age, level of education,feminist consciousness and so on.

Abstract:Based on Michel Foucauh' opinions that"dress is the tool of domesticating people"and that"it is the power measure besides violence",this paper points out that fashion magazines expressed feminist politics while spreading fashion.Therefore,the history of Chinese fashion is the history of Chinese women liberation.The paper considers the history of Chinese fashion magazines as a clue and analyses how the fashion magazines turned into a powerful tool of women's liberation and the designer and propagator of female politics from Qing dynasty to ROC (1912) and from the foundation of PRC (1949) to the Stage of Reforming and Opening.

Abstract:The mass media is the window for reflecting the mass ideology. The article makes a thorough analysis on the marginalization of female discourse power and studies the potential sexual discrimination of this phenomenon, regarding females as the subjects and the objects of the mass media, and then further traces its deep reason upon which many constructive suggestions and improved measures have been proposed. The article aims at awakening the masses to establish the correct sexual ideology in harmony and pursue the equality of discourse power between females and males. Abstract:The development of the Internet does not necessarily promote the harmonious development of gender in society. The focus and gaze of the Internet media on women’s bodies constructs the image of “being seen” on the Internet, which is a derogatory and distorted image of women. In the unequal relationship of “seeing and being seen”, the female body is an important carrier. The silence chosen by online audiences has further led to the online media’s eagerness to portray “being seen” women. News media and film and literature have not done enough to reflect and represent women in a fair, balanced, and consistent manner, and the number, perspective, and content of their works are not commensurate with the actual role women play in social production. This paper focuses on several images of women constructed by the news media and film and literature, analyzes their underlying causes and their impact on women, and tries to suggest possibilities for changing this phenomenon.

Abstract:This article investigates the issue of female identity construction in Chinese and in American advertisements from a contrastive perspective rarely adopted in the related literature. We have found that, while the identity of women constructed in the Chinese advertisements reflects the traditional expectations of women, such as being beauty-conscious, romance-pursuing, and maternal love-representing, the identities of women found in the American advertisements are those of confidence and uniqueness. Our interview data indicate that these findings are reflections of respective cultural values in the two societies. That is, women in Chinese culture are still seen as being traditional whereas women in the United States are seen as independent and goal-driven.

Abstract:The Pictorial of Custom Reification and Human Mirror Pictorial printed in Tianjin criticized political and social problems to meet the need of enlightenment movement with vivid pictures of voiceless women in the late Qing and early Republic China era.On one hand,the journalists brought women in to a national project-"cultivating mothers of the nation".On the other hand,women's lack of education was deemed as the symptom of a feudalist nation lagging-behind others.Because the male elite intellectuals were holding the authority of recording history,their perspective of selecting news and their interpretations of historical facts reflected their thinking paradigm,which related to the mentality of that historical period.The male intellectuals' perception of the national crises was reflected on their viewpoints taking women's lives for "the otherness",and the critiques to women helped to build up male elites' social images of.Gender relations embodied the deeper social structure and demonstrated the discourses in the reforming times.

Abstract:In the wake of patriarchal culture, the female images in TV advertisements have been confined to the framework of “good housewife” for a long time, which has become the object of male’s gaze. Meanwhile. With the development of globalization, informatization and networking, the female images in TV advertisements have been more diverse. Using qualitative and quantitative methods as well as questionnaires and in-depth interviews, this paper aims to study the femininity construction and audience perception of TV advertisement spokespersons. When it comes to the TV advertisement industry, this study is beneficial to inspiring future female TV advertisements to further break the gender stereotype under the male gaze and present diverse and positive TV advertisements from the perspective of “gender equality”. In addition, this study holds that diversified femininity construction is not only conducive to establishing a richer gender cognition from the audience aspect and intensifying women's subjective consciousness, but also helps promote a more valuable construction of gender temperament and guide the audience perception of femininity.

Abstract:Since the 1990s, Hunan TV’s “The Rose Date” and Shanghai TV’s “Meet on Saturday” have led the way to develop marriage programmes in China, bringing a new form to the traditional Chinese model of love and marriage. With the rapid evaluation of the economy and expansion of the commercial media, marriage shows are no longer about “marriage”, but have become a consumer culture, where the actresses and viewers consume and also are consumed. The mass media reshapes a new stereotypical image of women. Television, as a kind of mass media, accelerates the spread of this consumer culture and deepens the stereotypical image of women, based on its wide audience and fast dissemination. The prevailing consumer culture continues to shape our consumption habits, making it difficult to break this status quo in a short time. Based on Baudrillard’s theory of “consumer society”, this article explores the media image of women in contemporary Chinese marriage programmes in consumerism. From the perspective of the five basic elements of the communication process, it combs the relationship between the programme producers (media operators under the market mechanism) and the actresses (women taking part in the programme), the relationship between the media and the audience, and the impact of marriage programmes on the stereotyped image of women.

Abstract:With the development of the times, topics related to feminism have been receiving more and more attention, women's past life experiences have been collected and amplified through various media, and women's voices have been summarized and expressed. As one of the mediums of expression, film, and television dramas have attracted a lot of attention in recent years, and there are a lot of characteristic and representative female roles in them, and the discussion voices on these roles have been reconstructed and re-propagated on the Internet and in real life. The paper believes that female roles in film and television dramas are closely related to those in real life. This thesis, through the literature method and case study method, adopts three discourse types, namely, Doing Gender, Undoing Gender, Non-cooperative and Entrepreneurial, to compare and discuss female roles in film and television dramas, and to study modern women's self-worth and explore the awakening of women's consciousness. From the study, it is concluded that the path of feminism is still winding because of the diverse and ambiguous types of feminist discourse.

However, under the patriarchal aesthetic model, middle-aged women are still forced to accept the judgement of patriarchy and gradually lose their "selves". This paper aims to critically assess the image of middle-aged women in the Chinese reality TV variety show Sisters Who Make Wavess to emphasise that women of different ages have the same subjective consciousness and voice on TV and in the media, and to call on middle-aged women to break away from the shackles of age, to show their self-confidence and maturity, as well as to reflect on the role of the media in the promotion of women's development and gender equality.

Abstract:Previous studies of Chinese learners' language learning and identity construction have overlooked the gender factor. This study investigates the language learning narratives of two Chinese 'New Women', the aim being to reveal the connection between their language learning and gender identity construction, where national identity is the prominent variable. The theoretical framework applied is Darvin and Norton's 'model of investment, and the narrative analysis revealed there are intra-dimensional differences under the general label of New Women. The English learner displayed better strategic use of language in resisting disadvantaged positions and in constructing her 'ideal woman' identity. The analysis also revealed that language plays its role in generating differences through the soft and invisible power of ideology and shifting capital, both of which are embedded in the daily use of language.

Abstract:Through the analysis of the lexicogrammatical level from a functional perspective, this paper explores the construction process of gender identity in English advertisements. It is found that the advertising text tends to emphasize the subjectivity and creativity when aimed at male consumers, but focus on the psychological process and objectivity when aimed at female consumers. The study also reveals that functional analysis is an effective approach to gender language study.

Abstract:The rise and development of new media has brought new opportunities for the promotion of women's right to speak. Social media presents female images in various ways. This article conducts research on the female media image of Little Red Book APP, summarizing five types of female images displayed by Little Red Book, including fashion and beauty experts, lifestylist, emotion and life coach, travel expert, and literary youth. The role of Little Red Book in constructing female images is reflected in three aspects: relying on user groups to promote the diversification of female values, innovating push mechanisms to assist in the presentation of female images, and embedding "her economy" to highlight female images. This has a positive effect on breaking gender stereotypes and expanding women's understanding of their own creativity in the domestic environment.
