Abstract:Theoretical studies on the multi-bubble interaction are crucial for the in-depth understanding of the mechanism behind the applications of ultrasound contrast agents (UCAs) in clinics. A two-dimensional (2D) axisymmetric finite element model (FEM) is developed here to investigate the bubble-bubble interactions for UCAs in a fluidic environment. The effect of the driving frequency and the bubble size on the bubble interaction tendency (viz., bubbles' attraction and repulsion), as well as the influences of bubble shell mechanical parameters (viz., surface tension coefficient and viscosity coefficient) are discussed. Based on FEM simulations, the temporal evolution of the bubbles' radii, the bubble-bubble distance, and the distribution of the velocity field in the surrounding fluid are investigated in detail. The results suggest that for the interacting bubble-bubble couple, the overall translational tendency should be determined by the relationship between the driving frequency and their resonance frequencies. When the driving frequency falls between the resonance frequencies of two bubbles with different sizes, they will repel each other, otherwise they will attract each other. For constant acoustic driving parameters used in this paper, the changing rate of the bubble radius decreases as the viscosity coefficient increases, and increases first then decreases as the bubble shell surface tension coefficient increases, which means that the strength of bubble-bubble interaction could be adjusted by changing the bubble shell visco-elasticity coefficients. The current work should provide a powerful explanation for the accumulation observations in an experiment, and provide a fundamental theoretical support for the applications of UCAs in clinics.
Investigation of Bubble Dynamics in Ultrasonic Sonoporation

Abstract:During the process of quickly producing pathologic sections of the living tissues with ultrasonic sonoporation, it has been found that the exciting ultrasonic signal has an evident effect on the pathologic section. For the sake of understanding the effect and obtaining the best state of quickly producing pathologic section, the bubble dynamics in ultrasonic sonoporation is investigated by constructing a model of cavitated bubbles and altering the parameters, such as the ultrasonic signal frequency, acoustic pressure, bubbles' original radius and viscosity of the fluid. Numerical simulations indicate that radial vibration of cavitating bubble can keep on a steady process of expanding, shrinking, and vibrating in a given rang of frequencies, and one can find out the best original radius for obtaining the maximal cavitation. There exist a best cavitation regions which are determined by the parameters, i.e., the ultrasonic signal frequency, acoustic pressure, bubbles' original radius and viscosity of body fluid.

Abstract:Given its importance to the dynamics of cavitation bubbles, the mutual interaction between bubbles was carefully investigated in this work. The cavitation noises emitted in different sonication conditions were recorded to study the dynamical behavior of the bubbles. The frequency spectra of the noises suggest that the dispersing state of the bubbles severely influence the oscillations of bubbles, and that the nonlinear feature of the dynamics of cavitation bubbles, imposed by the mutual bubble-bubble interaction, gradually develops with the decrease of the dispersing height. Theoretical analysis shows that the size difference between the interacting bubbles should be responsible for the increase of nonlinearity of the oscillation, and that the decrease of the distance between them could effectively enhance the nonlinear feature of the oscillation of the bubble, both of which agree well with the experimental observation.
Behaviors of Cavitation Bubbles Driven by High-Intensity Ultrasound

Abstract:In a multi-bubble system, the bubble behavior is modulated by the primary acoustic field and the secondary acoustic field. To explore the translational motion of bubbles in cavitation liquids containing high-concentration cavitation nuclei,evolutions of bubbles are recorded by a high-speed camera, and translational trajectories of several representative bubbles are traced. It is found that translational motion of bubbles is always accompanied by the fragmentation and coalescence of bubbles, and for bubbles smaller than 10 μm, the possibility of bubble coalescence is enhanced when the spacing of bubbles is less than 30 μm. The measured signals and their spectra show the presence of strong negative pressure, broadband noise,and various harmonics, which implies that multiple interactions of bubbles appear in the region of high-intensity cavitation.Due to the strong coupling effect, the interaction between bubbles is random. A simplified triple-bubble model is developed to explore the interaction patterns of bubbles affected by the surrounding bubbles. Patterns of bubble interaction, such as attraction, repulsion, stable spacing, and rebound of bubbles, can be predicted by the theoretical analysis, and the obtained results are in good agreement with experimental observations. Mass exchange between the liquid and bubbles as well as absorption in the cavitation nuclei also plays an important role in multi-bubble cavitation, which may account for the weakening of the radial oscillations of bubbles.

Abstract:Bubble behaviors near a boundary in an ultrasonic field are the fundamental forms of acoustic cavitation and of substantial importance in various applications, such as industry cleaning, chemical engineering and food processing. The effects of two important factors that strongly affect the dynamics of a single acoustic cavitation bubble, namely, the initial bubble radius and the standoff distance, were investigated in this work. The temporal evolution of the bubble was recorded using high speed microphotography. Meanwhile, the time of bubble collapse and the characteristics of the liquid jets were analyzed. The results demonstrate that the intensity of the acoustic cavitation, which is characterized by the time of bubble collapse and the liquid jet speed, reaches the optimum level under suitable values of the initial bubble radius and the normalized standoff distance. As the initial bubble radius and the normalized standoff distance increase or decrease from the optimal values, the time of the bubble collapse increases, and the first liquid jet's speed decreases substantially, whereas the speeds of the second and third liquid jets exhibit no substantial changes. These results on bubble dynamics in an ultrasonic field are important for identifying or correcting the mechanisms of acoustic cavitation and for facilitating its optimization and application.

Numerical investigation of acoustic cavitation characteristics of a single gas-vapor bubble in soft tissue under dual-frequency ultrasound

Abstract:The viscoelastic tissue under dual-frequency ultrasound excitation affects the acoustic cavitation of a single gas-vapor bubble. To investigate the effect of the cavitation dynamics, the Gilmore-Akulichev-Zener (GAZ) model is coupled with the Peng-Robinson equation of state (PR EOS). Results indicate that the GAZ-PR EOS model can accurately estimate the bubble dynamics by comparing with the Gilmore PR EOS and GAZ-Van der Waals (VDW) EOS model. Furthermore, the acoustic cavitation effect in different viscoelastic tissues is investigated, including the radial stress at the bubble wall, the temperature, pressure, and the number of water molecules inside the bubble. Results show that the creep recovery and the relaxation of the stress caused by viscoelasticity can affect the acoustic cavitation of the bubble, which could inhibit the bubble's expansion and reduce the internal temperature and pressure within the bubble. Moreover, the effect of dual-frequency ultrasound on the cavitation of single gas-vapor bubbles is studied. Results suggest that dual-frequency ultrasound could increase the internal temperature of bubbles, the internal pressure of bubbles, and the radial stress at the bubble wall. More importantly, there is a specific optimal combination of frequencies for particular viscoelasticity by exploring the impact of different dual-frequency ultrasound combinations and tissue viscoelasticity on the acoustic cavitation of a single gas-vapor bubble. In conclusion, this study helps to provide theoretical guidance for dual-frequency ultrasound to improve acoustic chemical and mechanical effects, and further optimize its application in acoustic sonochemistry and ultrasound therapy.

Abstract:The cavitation dynamics of an air-vapor mixture bubble with ultrasonic excitation can be greatly affected by the equation of state (EOS) for the interior gases. To simulate the cavitation dynamics, the Gilmore-Akulichev equation was coupled with the Peng–Robinson (PR) EOS or the Van der Waals (vdW) EOS. In this study, the thermodynamic properties of air and water vapor predicted by the PR and vdW EOS were first compared, and the results showed that the PR EOS gives a more accurate estimation of the gases within the bubble due to the less deviation from the experimental values. Moreover, the acoustic cavitation characteristics predicted by the Gilmore-PR model were compared to the Gilmore-vdW model, including the bubble collapse strength, the temperature, pressure and number of water molecules within the bubble. The results indicated that a stronger bubble collapse was predicted by the Gilmore-PR model rather than the Gilmore-vdW model, with higher temperature and pressure, as well as more water molecules within the collapsing bubble. More importantly, it was found that the differences between both models increase at higher ultrasound amplitudes or lower ultrasound frequencies while decreasing as the initial bubble radius and the liquid parameters ( e.g. , surface tension, viscosity and temperature of the surrounding liquid) increase. This study might offer important insights into the effects of the EOS for interior gases on the cavitation bubble dynamics and the resultant acoustic cavitation-associated effects, contributing to further optimization of its applications in sonochemistry and biomedicine.

Effect of low-frequency ultrasonic field at different power on the dynamics of a single bubble near a rigid wall

Abstract:Various bubble dynamics near the boundary in an acoustic field play a significantly important role in destructive erosion which has been associated with applications in industry cleaning, chemical engineering and biomedicine. But the effect mechanism of the high pressure on the boundary induce by single acoustic cavitation bubble has not been fully elucidated, which is vital for further application. The objective of this paper is to investigate the behaviors of a gas bubble near a rigid wall in a low frequency ultrasonic field. The temporal evolution of the bubble was recorded by means of synchronous high-speed recordings. Meanwhile, the time of bubble collapse, velocity of the bubble margin and the characteristics of the liquid jet were analyzed. In addition, the bubble dynamics were simulated based on potential flow theory coupled with the boundary integral method (BIM). Results are presented for a single bubble generated near the rigid wall with the normalized standoff distance γ = 1.85 under a wide range of ultrasonic power. The results show that the dynamics of the bubble can be divided into four phases: oscillation, movement, collapse and rebound. And when the applied ultrasonic power increases, the time of bubble collapse has a clear trend to decrease and the maximum velocity of the bubble margin increases apparently. Furthermore, the bubble behaviors after its first collapse, such as the number and the velocity of the effective jets, also vary evidently as the increase of the ultrasonic power. These results about bubble dynamics in ultrasonic field may be significant to determine or correct the main mechanisms of acoustic cavitation.
Frequency spectrum of the noise emitted by two interacting cavitation bubbles in strong acoustic fields.

Abstract:The dynamics and acoustic emission of two interacting cavitation bubbles exposed to strong acoustic fields with a frequency of 515 KHz are investigated numerically in this paper. After comparing the dynamics of a single bubble excited by the given pressure waves, bubbles with ambient radii of 2 and 5 μm were chosen to be studied to discuss the influence of the mutual bubble-bubble interaction on the dynamic behaviors and acoustic emission of the bubbles. The results show that, aside from the external driving pressure waves, the interaction between the bubbles imposes an extra nonlinear effect on the oscillations of the bubbles and that the dynamics of the smaller bubble could be suppressed gradually with the enhancement of this mutual interaction by decreasing the distance between the bubbles. Moreover, the improvement in the oscillation nonlinearity of the bubbles due to the change in the ambient circumstance could readily be observed from the frequency spectra of the bubbles' acoustic emission, which interprets the change by exhibiting an appropriate development of the subharmonics, the ultraharmonics, and the broadband component.
Analysis of Suppressive Effect of Large Bubbles on Oscillation of Cavitation Bubble in Cavitation Field

Abstract:In this work, the interaction among multiple bubbles in a cavitation field is investigated by combining the experimental observation of small bubbles hovering around large bubbles. A model composed of three bubbles is developed, and the dynamic behavior of cavitation bubble is analyzed. By considering the time delay effect of the interaction among bubbles and the nonspherical oscillation of large bubbles, the modified bubble dynamic equations are obtained. Numerical results show that the nonspherical effect of large bubbles has little effect on the oscillation of cavitation bubble. The suppressive effect of large bubble on cavitation bubble is closely related to the radius of the large bubble. The larger the size of the large bubble, the stronger the suppression is. When the size of large bubble approaches to the resonant radius, the oscillation of cavitation bubble presents coupled resonance response, and the maximum expansion radius of bubble shows a resonance peak. The distribution of the secondary Bjerknes force versus bubble radius and the separation distance is strongly influenced by driving frequencies or sound pressure. When the large bubble is on the order of submillimeter, the intensity of the secondary Bjerknes force and the acoustic response mode are different due to the different intensity of the nonlinear response of the cavitation bubble. As the distance decreases, when the acoustic pressure increases to a certain value, the secondary Bjerknes force on the cavitation bubble decreases due to abnormal acoustic absorption. The secondary Bjerknes force on cavitation bubble is likely to be repulsive at different separation distances. The theoretical results accord well with experimental phenomenon.
Experimental investigation on the characteristics of the shock wave emitted by the cavitation bubble near the air bubble

Abstract:This study explores the mitigation of cavitation damage in hydraulic engineering through air entrainment. The primary aim is to experimentally analyze the shock wave characteristics emitted by cavitation bubbles adjacent to air bubbles affixed to a tube nozzle. The schlieren optical system is utilized to visualize the shock wave, while a hydrophone measures its pressure. Experiments are conducted on cavitation bubbles induced by the spark-generated method in the vicinity of air bubbles, varying the dimensionless distances and sizes of the air bubbles. The results indicate that (1) The introduction of an air bubble noticeably changes the morphology, kinematic behavior, and shock wave features of the cavitation bubble. (2) Four distinct shock wave patterns are identified based on the quantity and shape of the shock wave, with variations in the cavitation bubble's collapsing behavior and shock wave characteristics across different patterns. (3) The dimensionless distance γ and size δ exert significant influence on the shock wave's quantity, pressure peak, shape, and energy. With γ decreases or δ increases, the shock wave quantity increases while the shock wave intensity decreases. This investigation of the interaction between cavitation bubbles and air bubbles is essential for elucidating the mechanism through which air entrainment mitigates cavitation damage.
Numerical Simulations and Experimental Validation on Passive Acoustic Emissions During Bubble Formation

Abstract:In this paper, the volume of fluid (VOF) model in conjunction with continuum surface force (CSF) model is applied to numerically investigate the single bubble formation process in the bubble columns. Meanwhile, the hybrid method (large-eddy simulation (LES) and acoustic analogy method) is used for bubble acoustic prediction. Experimental results provide a reliable validation of the numerical results. Adaptive filtering technique and time-frequency analyses are adapted for the numerical acoustic data at the gas velocity of 0.1 m/s. The spectrum and spectrogram approaches indicate that the numerical acoustic data covers two principal frequency components, in which, one is the bubble generation rate and the other is the natural frequency of volumetric bubble oscillation. By combining the studies of flow field and acoustic signals, volumetric bubble oscillation is found to be excited by an axial water jet up into the bubble, immediately following the bubble detachment. The results of this study lead to the proposition that numerical simulation method could be applied to well understanding of the physics behind the passive acoustic emission. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Dynamics of nonspherical bubble in compressible liquid under the coupling effect of ultrasound and electrostatic field

Abstract:A model for a nonspherical bubble in a compressible liquid under the coupling effect of ultrasound and electrostatic field was developed in this study. The following assumptions are made: (1) the bubble undergoes adiabatic oscillation; (2) the gravity of the liquid is negligible; (3) the bubble is insulating. If the speed of sound approaches infinity (<math>c→∞</math>), the equation set is reduced to the equation set for an incompressible liquid. We found that, under ultrasonic irradiation coupled with electric stress, a nonspherical bubble cannot oscillate steadily in the liquid. The bubble is bound to collapse during several cycles. The presence of electric stress reduces the surface tension at the bubble wall, which produces a larger maximum bubble-radius during the rarefaction cycle and a smaller minimum bubble-radius during the compression cycle. Consequently, during the collapse, both the gas pressure and the temperature in the bubble center increase substantially, if the bubble is exposed to both ultrasound and electrostatic field instead of ultrasound alone. In addition, the cavitation threshold of the bubble within an electrostatic field decreases significantly, compared to the bubble without an electrostatic field. In general, bubble cavitation occurs more easily and violently in the liquid after the introduction of an electrostatic field.

Study on the Characterization Method of Ultrasonic Cavitation Field Based on the Numerical Simulation of the Amplitude of Sound Pressure

Abstract:In order to meet the visualization requirements of the cavitation field distribution in the ultrasonic cavitation reactor, a method based on the numerical simulation of the amplitude of sound pressure is proposed. In order to verify that the amplitude of sound pressure plays a decisive role in cavitation effect, the dynamic equation of a single cavitation bubble is established, and the influence law of the amplitude of sound pressure on cavitation motion is analyzed in principle; then, the three-dimensional model of the self-built drum type ultrasonic cavitation reactor is built using the finite element software COMSOL Multiphysics, and the amplitude distribution of the sound pressure at the longitudinal section is obtained when the liquid height was 25 mm, 60 mm and 90 mm. Through the comparison of aluminum foil corrosion experiments, it shows that the numerical simulation method based on the amplitude of sound pressure can accurately characterize the distribution area of ultrasonic cavitation field, which overcomes the disadvantage of time-consuming and labor-consuming in the traditional measurement method of cavitation field distribution, and lays a foundation for the study of the distribution law of ultrasonic cavitation field.
Cavitation of Two Kinds of Bubble Mixtures

Abstract:By solving the nonlinear wave equation coupled with the modified Rayleigh-Plesset equation, the characteristics of the acoustic field and bubble motion in cavitation environment can be described. In general, the cavitation cloud consists of many kinds of bubbles with different ambient radii. For simplicity, in this work the cavitation process of the mixture of two kinds of bubbles with different ambient radii is numerically simulated, and the ratio of the mixture is adjustable. Suppose that the cavitation in water contained in a cylindrical container is stimulated by ultrasonic horn. The dissipative absorption of the container wall is taken into account, which plays an important role in forming the stationary standing wave field, otherwise, the beat signal of acoustic pressure will appear which is absent in the observation. Based on the stationary acoustic wave field, for the case of the mixed-bubble cavitation, the interactions between bubbles and acoustic field, bubbles and bubbles, as well as the spectrum of acoustic signal are analyzed. We choose the cases that the ratio of two kinds of bubble species is varying, but the total density of bubble number is fixed to be 1/mm(3), and find that those results are very different. For the case that the ambient radii of two bubble species are both a few micron, revealing that the interaction between bubbles and acoustic field is usually weak. As the proportion of bigger bubble increases, the change of the acoustic pressure and the averaged radius of bubble behave regularly; for the case that the ambient radius of one of bubble specie is relatively big, for example, the ambient radius is about a few tens of microns, the interactions between bubbles and acoustic field become stronger, and the nonlinearity is more apparent. We can observe the similar trends from the frequency spectrum. For the bubble of a few microns in size, the base frequency is dominant; in contrast, for the bubble of a few tens of microns in size, the components of harmonic frequencies are far beyond the base frequency component. The interesting phenomenon is that there is the cut off frequency and the cut of frequencies for different mixture of bubbles are almost the same.
Removal of Surface-Attached Micro- and Nanobubbles by Ultrasonic Cavitation in Microfluidics

Abstract:Surface-attached micro- and nanobubbles are known for their resistance to external forces. This study experimentally and theoretically investigates their response to strong ultrasonic fields. Surface-attached micro- and nanobubbles with contact radii from 2 mu m to 20 mu m are generated in a microchannel and exposed to ultrasound through a vibrating glass substrate. At a driving frequency over 200 kHz up to 2 MHz tested, no significant response from the micro- and nanobubbles is observed. By contrast, at 100 kHz-200 kHz, ultrasonic cavitation bubbles appear in the microchannel and migrate toward the surface micro- and nanobubbles. Then the surface micro- and nanobubbles merge with the ultrasonic cavitation bubbles, detach from the substrate, and become free gaseous nuclei susceptible to further cavitation. Notably, the removal process leaves no observable residue. Theoretical analysis suggests that the directional migration of cavitation bubbles is driven by mutual acoustic radiation forces. This work demonstrates that ultrasonic fields can effectively remove surface micro- and nanobubbles, transforming them into free gaseous cavitation nuclei.
Cavitation bubble structures below a soft boundary in an ultrasonic field

Abstract:We studied the layer structure of bubbles just below water/air and water/EPE (Expand aple poly ephylene) interfaces using high-speed photography. The layer structure was generated by floating spherical clusters, the source bubbles of which were identified to come from the attachment of bubble nuclei at the interface, the floating of bubbles in the bulk liquid, or bubbles generated on the surface of the ultrasonic transducer. The boundary shape affected the layer structure, which assumed a similar profile below the water/EPE interface. We developed a simplified model composed of a bubble column and bubble chain to describe interface impacts and the interaction of bubbles in a typical branching structure. We found that the resonant frequency of the bubbles is smaller than that of an isolated single bubble. Moreover, the primary acoustic field plays an important role in the generation of the structure. A higher acoustic frequency and pressure were found to shorten the distance between the structure and the interface. A hat-like layer structure of bubbles was more likely to exist in the low-frequency (28 and 40 kHz) intense inertial cavitation field, in which bubbles oscillate violently. By contrast, structures composed of discrete spherical clusters were more likely to form in the relatively weak cavitation field at 80 kHz, in which stable and inertial cavitation coexisted. The theoretical predictions were in good agreement with the experimental observations.

Abstract:The present study treats the effects of mass transport, heat transfer and chemical reactions heat on the bubble dynamics by spanning a range of ambient bubble radii. The thermodynamic behavior of the acoustic bubble was shown for three wave frequencies, 355, 515 and 1000 kHz. The used acoustic amplitude ranges from 1 to 3 atm. It has been demonstrated that the ambient bubble radius, R0, of the maximal response (i.e., maximal bubble temperature and pressure, Tmax and Pmax) is shifted toward lower values if the acoustic amplitude (at fixed frequency) or the ultrasonic frequency (at fixed amplitude) are increased. The range of the ambient bubble radius narrows as the ultrasonic frequency increases. Heat exchange at the bubble interface was found to be the most important mechanism within the bubble internal energy balance for acoustic amplitudes lower than 2.5 and 3 atm for ultrasonic frequencies of 355 and 515 kHz, respectively. For acoustic amplitudes greater or equal to 2.5 and 3 atm, corresponding to 355 and 515 kHz, respectively, mass transport mechanism (i.e., evaporation and condensation of water vapor) becomes dominant compared to the other mechanisms. At 1000 kHz, the mechanism of heat transfer persists to be dominant for all the used acoustic amplitudes (from 1 to 3 atm). Practically, all the above observations were maintained for bubbles at and around the optimum bubble radius, whereas no significant impact of the three energetic mechanisms was observed for bubbles of too lower and too higher values of R0 (limits of the investigated ranges of R0).

Abstract:Ultrasonic treatment is a hot research topic in the treatment of the melt of metals. Numerical simulation is a useful method to unveil the principles of ultrasonic treatment. In this paper, the Novier-Stoke equations and the cavitation model are coupled to simulate the cavitation during ultrasonic treatment by using Fluent. It is found that as the nucleation site volume fraction increases to a certain degree, there will be a bubble layer surrounding the amplitude transformer, which insulates the effect of ultrasound beyond the bubble blanket. Experiment was carried out, and the simulated results were validated. And the effect of nucleation site volume fraction in water is investigated. The nucleation site volume fraction should be controlled into a certain range to realize uniform cavitation.
