Abstract:Reaction of a selenium alkaline solution with a nickel complex aqueous solution produces nanocrystalline pyrite NiSe2 with an average particle size of about 20nm in the temperature range of 90–100°C through a hydrothermal method. X-ray diffraction analysis indicates that the product is a single phase of pyrite nickel diselenide. TEM and ED images show that the product has a good crystallinity with a plate-like form. The synthesis can be performed conveniently and safely.

Abstract:Hollow nickel spheres of 50-60 nm diameter have different properties from bulk nickel. For example, the authors demonstrate that the spheres exhibit a long-range magnetic-ordering transition at 575 K and enhanced coercivity. The facile synthesis of such spheres by mild hydrothermal redox reaction of nickel dodecylsulfate with NaH2PO2 (see Figure) is described.

Abstract:Silver coated hollow SnO2 microspheres were prepared by a one-step hydrothermal method and a two-step in situ chemical reduction method using sodium stannate and urea as the main raw materials. The thickness and uniformity of the surface of Ag nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy-dispersive (SEM/EDS) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). The results show that well dispersed hollow microspheres with diameter of 1 similar to 4 mu m are prepared by both methods. The morphology of Ag nanoparticles on the surface of hollow SnO2 sphere prepared by the one-step hydrothermal method is fine with agglomeration, while an uniform thickness silver shell with a diameter of 100 similar to 300 nm is obtained by two-step in situ chemical reduction method. The concentration of reducing agent glucose influences the size of silver nanoparticles and silver layer thickness obviously.

Abstract:NiS hollow microspheres were synthesized by the reaction of nickel acetate and thioacetamide in ethanol at 150 degrees C. XRD, TEM, SAED (selected area electron diffraction), and SEM were utilized to characterize the products. The results show that the products were hollow microspheres made of beta- and alpha-NiS, while the hollow spheres were transformed from the a-NiS solid ones.

Abstract:NiS hollow spheres with controllable diameter sizes have been prepared in large scale by a simple method, where cyclohexylamine, as both solvent and reductant, successfully controlled the rate of releasing S2-. NiS nanoparticles were self-aggregated into hollow spheres around the in situ formed poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (PVP, M-w = 30,000) spherical micelles in the cyclohexylamine media. The as-obtained high-quality NiS hollow spheres with loosely packed nanoparticles would show interesting applications in optical device and lithium-ion battery.

Abstract:A thioglycolic acid (TGA) assisted hydrothermal process has been developed to synthesize submicron-sized copper sulfide (CuS) hollow spheres via the reaction between copper sulfate (CuSO4) and thioacetamide (CH3CSNH2). X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy were employed to characterize the obtained product. Furthermore, the possible mechanism and the critical factors for the TGA-assisted hydrothermal synthesis of the CuS hollow spheres have been preliminarily presented.

Abstract:A series of nickel selenides (NiSe2 microcrystals, Ni1-xSe and Ni3Se2 microspheres) has been successfully synthesized through a convenient, low-temperature hydrothermal method. A good nucleation and growth environment has been created by forming a uniform and transparent solution reaction system. The compositions (including the x value of Ni1-xSe), phase structures, as well as the morphologies of nickel selenides, can be controlled by adjusting the Ni/Se ratio of the raw materials, the pH, the reaction temperatures and times, and so forth. The newly produced Se microspheres in the system have been used as both reactant and in situ template to the Ni1-xSe microspheres. It is found that Ni1-xSe microspheres act as the intermediate precursor during the formation of Ni3Se2 microspheres. Under certain conditions, hexagonal NiSe microspheres can be converted into rhombohedral NiSe nanowires in solution. The formation mechanisms of a series of nickel selenides has been investigated in detail by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses. This work has provided a general, simple, and effective method to control the composition, phase structure, and morphology of metal selenides in aqueous solution, which will be important for inorganic synthesis methodology and further applications of selenides.

Abstract:A facile, ionic liquid-assisted route was developed to synthesize hierarchical CuS flower-like submicrospheres at 80°C for 24 h. The method was based on a reaction between CuCl2 and thioacetamide (TAA) in aqueous solution with using ionic liquid 1-n-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([BMIM]Cl) as an assisted agent. The chemical composition, morphology and size of CuS product were characterized by XRD, SEM and TEM. The result shows that the as-prepared CuS consists of flowery spheres with a diameter of 0·6 ∼ 1·0 μm, and these submicrospheres are, in fact, built by numerous nanoflakes with a thickness of 10 ∼ 20 nm. The optical property of CuS product was examined by UV-Vis. In general, we suggested an ecologically and environmentally friendly route for the syntheses of hierarchical metal chalcogenides structures in this paper.

Abstract:Submicrometer hollow CuS, CdS, and NiS spheres with diameters between 400 and 1300 nm were successfully prepared through an interface-mineralizing reaction in a NH3·H2OCS2 solution at low temperature. Several techniques were applied to characterize the interesting self-assembled structures. The compositions of the prepared CuS, CdS, and NiS materials were confirmed by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), the surface atomic ratios and the valence state of ions were examined by X-ray photoelectron energy spectroscopy (XPS), and the morphologies of products by transmission electron microscope (TEM). The optical properties, including absorption and emission, were recorded by UVvis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy, respectively. In this approach, ethylenediamine (en) was substituted by aqueous ammonia (NH3·H2O) to avoid violent reactions with carbon disulfide (CS2). The main advantage to this approach is that both ammonia and CS2 played multi-functional roles in the assembly of hollow-sphere structures. The reaction sources themselves (CS2) served as the reaction template and required no other templates to support it. The proposed interface-mineralizing mechanism is discussed, and the hollow-sphere structures obtained are envisioned to have applications in area of materials science.Key words: hollow-sphere structure, NH3·H2OCS2, metal sulfides

Abstract:A novel layer-by-layer approach has been developed to synthesize polycrystalline SnO2 hollow spheres with tunable shell thickness and size using SiO2 spheres as a template. The surface of the SiO2 spheres has been first modified by the polyelectrolyte, and subsequently, the compact SnO2 layer has deposited on the surface of the SiO2 spheres through a redox reaction because of the electrostatic attraction between the charged species. After HF etching treatment, the uniform SnO2 hollow spheres have been obtained. The approach presented herein has been extended to synthesize other metal oxide and sulfide hollow spheres such as In2O3 and ZnS. Moreover, the as-synthesized SnO2 hollow spheres have been applied in lithium-ion battery and show improved performance compared with SnO2 nanoparticles. The high surface area and stable hollow structure of the SnO2 hollow spheres may be responsible for the improved performance.

Abstract:Mesoporous SrTiO3 spheres were synthesized via the self-assembly of nanocrystallites in the presence of Na2SiO3 center dot 9H(2)O through a hydrothermal process. The as-prepared samples were investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and nitrogen gas sorption isotherms. The results revealed that the mesoporous spheres consisted of SrTiO3 nanocrystallites with an amorphous silicate shell and mesopores formed among them. Na2SiO3 center dot 9H(2)O played an important role in the formation of the mesoporous SrTiO3 spheres. Based on the experimental results a possible formation mechanism of the mesoporous SrTiO3 spheres was preliminarily proposed.

Abstract:In this study, a topotactic transformation route was proposed to synthesize single-crystalline beta-NiS hollow spheres with uniform phase and morphology evolving from polycrystalline alpha-NiS hollow spheres. Uniform polycrystalline alpha-NiS hollow spheres were firstly prepared with thiourea and glutathione as sulfur sources under hydrothermal conditions through the Kirkendall effect. By increasing the reaction temperature the polycrystalline alpha-NiS hollow spheres were transformed to uniform beta-NiS hollow spheres. The beta-NiS crystals obtained through the topotactic transformation route not only have unchanged morphology of hollow spheres but are also single-crystalline in nature. The as-prepared NiS hollow spheres display a good ability to remove the organic pollutant Congo red from water, which makes them have application potential in water treatment.

Abstract:Hollow sphere of CdSe with size of ≈100–200 nm can be templated from anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) vesicles induced by the ultrasonic irradiation. The successful vesicle templating indicated that the outer leaflet of the bilayer is the receptive surface in the controlled growth of CdSe nanoparticles, which provide the unique reactor for the nucleation and mineralization growth of CdSe nanoparticles. The products were characterized by XRD, TEM, and HRTEM techniques. UV–vis spectrum recorded the optical properties of CdSe hollow spheres (2.01 eV), which showed an obvious blue shift relative to the bulk cubic CdSe (1.73 eV). Surfactant molecules (SDS) passivated in the CdSe hollow spheres were completely extracted, as determined by thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). Systematic studies found that the ultrasound irradiation and concentration of surfactant (SDS) in the system were important factors on the controlled synthesis desired hollow sphere morphologies, and also the temperance have an importance influence on the mineralization and crystallization of the CdSe hollow spheres. Based on the observation on morphological difference of CdSe in different systems, the possible mechanism for the formation of CdSe hollow spheres was discussed.

Abstract:Monodisperse lead selenide nanoparticles have been successfully prepared via a sonochemical route from an aqueous solution of lead acetate and sodium selenosulfate in the presence of complexing agents under ambient air. It was found that when trisodium citrate was used as the complexing agent, the product was spherical nanoparticles with an average size of ca. 8 nm. If potassium nitrilotriacetate was used, the product consisted of rectangles with an average size of ca. 25 nm. The products were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, selected area electron diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. A probable mechanism for the sonochemical formation of PbSe was proposed. Several factors that affected the nature and morphology of the products were also discussed such as the pH value, the complexing agents, and the intensity of the ultrasound irradiation.

Abstract:Nearly monodisperse spherical amorphous Se colloids are prepared by the dismutation of Na2SeSO3 solution at room temperature; by altering the pH of the solution, amorphous Se colloid spheres with sizes of about 120 nm, 200 nm, 300 nm, and 1 µm can be obtained. Se@Ag2Se core/shell spheres are successfully synthesized by using the obtained amorphous Se (a-Se) spheres as templates, indicating the potential applications of these Se nanomaterials in serving as soft templates for other selenides. Meanwhile, selenium nanowires are obtained through a “solid-solution-solid” growth process by dispersing the prepared Se spheres in ethanol. This simple and environmentally benign approach may offer more opportunities in the synthesis and applications of nanocrystal materials.
Preparation and Characterization of Mono-disperse Spherical Nickel Particles

Abstract:Mono-disperse spherical nickel particles were synthesized by liquid phase reduction method with nickel sulfate as raw material,hydrazine as reductive agent,and sodium hydroxide as adjusting pH value of the solution.The prepared powder samples were characterized by means of X-ray diffraction(XRD),scanning electron microscopy(SEM),thermo-gravimetry(TG) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS).The results indicated that the high purity spherical particles had the face-centered cubic(fcc) crystal structure and their final diameters were between 100 and 400 nm with narrow size distribution.The optimal technological conditions were obtained as that the concentration of Ni2+ was 0.35 mol/L,the ratio [N2H4]/[Ni2+] 4.0,the ratio [NaOH]/[Ni2+] 2.5,and the reaction temperature 80℃.Moreover,the original concentration of nickel controlled the shape,size and agglomeration of the nickel particles,the temperature controlled the reaction rate,and the amounts of NaOH and hydrazine affected the purity of nickel powder.
Use of Carbonaceous Polysaccharide Microspheres As Templates for Fabricating Metal Oxide Hollow Spheres

Abstract:A general method for the synthesis of metal oxide hollow spheres has been developed by using carbonaceous polysaccharide microspheres prepared from saccharide solution as templates. Hollow spheres of a series of metal oxides (SnO2, Al2O3, Ga2O3, CoO, NiO, Mn3O4, Cr2O3, La2O3, Y2O3, Lu2O3, CeO2, TiO2, and ZrO2) have been prepared in this way. The method involves the initial absorption of metal ions from solution into the functional surface layer of carbonaceous saccharide microspheres; these are then densified and cross-linked in a subsequent films or cheese-like nanostructures of oxides can also be prepared by slightly modified procedures. XRD, TEM, HRTEM, and SAED have been used to characterize the structures. In a preliminary study on the gas sensitivity of SnO2 hollow spheres, considerably reduced "recovery times" were noted, exemplifying the distinct properties imparted by the hollow structure. These hollow or porous nanostructures have the potential for diverse applications, such as in gas sensitivity or catalysis, or as advanced ceramic materials.

Abstract:CdS hollow spheres with well-controlled morphology and uniform size were successfully prepared using a miniemulsion technique, in which miniemulsion droplets of isooctane prepared with dodecylmercaptane as a co-stabilizer were employed as templates. The SH groups of dodecylmercaptane generated S− ions under alkaline conditions, and further reacted with Cd2+ ions to form cadmium thiolate around the droplets. The cadmium thiolate then reacted with S2− ions, stemming from Na2S⋅9H2O, to directly form CdS hollow spheres owing to the evaporation of isooctane during the reaction and/or the subsequent drying process. No additional dissolution, calcination or additional surface modification of the templates was needed. The size of the hollow spheres could be tuned by altering the molar ratio of the anionic and non-ionic surfactants, while their shell thickness could be adjusted by changing the amount of co-stabilizer.
