Abstract:Natural pigments, including carotenoids, flavonoids and anthocyanidins, determine the attractive color of fruits. These natural pigments are essential secondary metabolites, which play multiple roles in the whole life cycle of plants and are characterized by powerful antioxidant activity. After decades of research and development, multiple benefits of these natural pigments to human health have been explored and recognized and have shown bright application prospects in food, medicine, cosmetics and other industries. In this paper, the research progress of natural fruit pigments in recent years was reviewed, including the structural characteristics and classification, distribution in fruits and analysis methods, biosynthetic process, antioxidant capacity and mechanism, bioaccessibility and bioavailability, and health benefits. Overall, this paper summarizes the recent advances in antioxidant activity and other biological functions of natural fruit pigments, which aims to provide guidance for future research.

Abstract:It is a hot research topic on natural antioxidant to find efficient,non-toxic and safe antioxidant from natural products.Natural plant extracts are important source of natural antioxidants;evaluating antioxidant activity precisely has become a hot spot in research area.Recent studies of antioxidant activity evaluation methods in home and abroad were summarized in this article,such as scavenging free radical evaluation method,reduction of metal ions evaluation method,inhibition of lipid peroxidation evaluation method and cell evaluation method,especially about the principles and advantages and disadvantages of these methods.Also,the future research of antioxidant activity evaluation method in vitro was prospected so that to provide reference of standard system of the antioxidant activity evaluation methods.

Abstract:In recent years,many studies have revealed the excellent anti-radiation effects of bio-flavonoids from various natural resources. The action mechanisms include the protections of hemopoietic and immune systems,the scavenging of active oxygen free radicals,the inhibition of lipid peroxidation as well as the prevention of DNA damage. In this paper,the research progress of flavonoids on anti-radiation and the action mechanisms were reviewed,especially focusing on their roles as natural radioprotectants. This review may be beneficial for developing bio-flavonoids as anti-radiation foods.

Abstract:Proanthocyanidins (PA) are polyphenol compounds that are widely distributed in the bark, fruit core, skin, or seeds of various plants. Anthocyanidins are water‐soluble natural pigments widely found in plants. They are all flavonoids, a major coloring substance in plants and fruits. In recent years, research into PA and anthocyanins has become increasingly popular because of their excellent anti‐oxidation, scavenging of reactive oxygen free radicals and other physical and chemical activities, and their anti‐cancer, vision protection, aging prevention, skin beauty pharmacological, and nutraceutical effects. Especially, recent systematic reviews and meta‐analyses indicate their value, safety, and efficacy in the prevention, adjuvant therapy, and management of cardiometabolic disease. Here, we summarize their research progress from the aspects of chemical structure, biosynthetic pathways, distribution, extraction and separation, coloration, efficacy, and potential. The comparison between them might provide a reference for their development and efficient utilization. However, more large‐sample‐size randomized controlled trials and high‐quality studies are needed to firmly establish their clinical efficacy.

Abstract:(1) Background: Dyes play an important role in food, medicine, textile, and other industries, which make human life more colorful. With the increasing demand for food safety, the development of natural dyes becomes more and more attractive. (2) Methods: The literature was searched using the electronic databases PubMed, Web of Science, and SciFinder and this scoping review was carried out following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). (3) Results: 248 articles were included in this review. This review summarizes the research progress on natural dyes in the last ten years. According to structural features, natural dyes mainly include carotenoids, polyphenols, porphyrins, and alkaloids, and some of the newest dyes are summarized. Some pharmacological activities of carotenoids, anthocyanin, curcumin, and betalains in the last 10 years are summarized, and the biological effects of dyes regarding illumination conditions. The disadvantages of natural dyes, including sources, cost, stability, and poor bioavailability, limit their application. Here, some feasible strategies (potential resources, biotechnology, new extraction and separation strategies, strategies for improving stability) are described, which will contribute to the development and utilization of natural dyes. (4) Conclusion: Natural dyes show health benefits and potential in food additives. However, it is necessary for natural dyes to pass toxicity tests and quality tests and receive many regulatory approvals before their final entry into the market as food colorants or as drugs.

Abstract:The natural antioxidant can effectively scavenge free radicals and protect body health. It has become an inevitable trend to find highly-efficient, low-priced and low-toxicitied antioxidant from natural plants. This article summarized research progress of the components which played the antioxidant function coming from nature plants, such as polysaccharides, flavonoids, polyphenols, alkaloids, saikosaponins, vitamin, etc. The problems and prospects on these relative studies about antioxidants were put forward. These studies were served as a base in the exploitation and utilization of the active antioxidant from natural plants.

Abstract:Anthocyanins are natural products that give color to plants. As natural plant pigments, anthocyanins also have a series of health-promoting benefits. Many researchers have proved that anthocyanins have therapeutic effects on diseases, such as circulatory, nervous, endocrine, digestive, sensory, urinary and immune systems. Additionally, a large number of studies have reported that anthocyanins have an anticancer effect through a wide range of anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. The anti-disease impact and mechanism of anthocyanins are diverse, so they have high research value. This review summarizes the research progress of anthocyanins on the pharmacological agents of different diseases to provide references for subsequent research.

Abstract:Antioxidant peptides are a class of biologically active peptides with low molecular weights and stable antioxidant properties that are isolated from proteins. In this review, the progress in research on the activity evaluation, action mechanism, and structure-activity relationships of natural antioxidant peptides are summarized. The methods used to evaluate antioxidant activity are mainly classified into three categories: in vitro chemical, in vitro cellular, and in vivo animal methods. Also, the biological effects produced by these three methods are listed: the scavenging of free radicals, chelation of metal ions, inhibition of lipid peroxidation, inhibition of oxidative enzyme activities, and activation of antioxidant enzymes and non-enzymatic systems. The antioxidant effects of natural peptides primarily consist of the regulation of redox signaling pathways, which includes activation of the Nrf2 pathway and the inhibition of the NF-κB pathway. The structure-activity relationships of the antioxidant peptides are investigated, including the effects of peptide molecular weight, amino acid composition and sequence, and secondary structure on antioxidant activity. In addition, four computer-assisted methods (molecular docking, molecular dynamics simulation, quantum chemical calculations, and the determination of quantitative structure-activity relationships) for analyzing the structure-activity effects of natural peptides are summarized. Thus, this review lays a theoretical foundation for the development of new antioxidants, nutraceuticals, and cosmetics.

Abstract:Chlorophylls and carotenoids are natural pigments that are present in our daily diet, especially with the increasing tendency towards more natural and healthy behaviors among consumers. As disturbed antioxidant homeostasis capacities seem to be implicated in the progress of different pathologies, the antioxidant properties of both groups of lipophilic compounds have been studied. The objective of this review was to analyze the state-of-the-art advances in this field. We conducted a systematic bibliographic search (Web of ScienceTM and Scopus®), followed by a comprehensive and critical description of the results, with special emphasis on highly cited and more recently published research. In addition to an evaluative description of the methodologies, this review discussed different approaches used to obtain a physiological perspective, from in vitro studies to in vivo assays using oxidative biomarkers. From a chemical viewpoint, many studies have demonstrated how a pigment’s structure influences its antioxidant response and the underlying mechanisms. The major outcome is that this knowledge is essential for interpreting new data in a metabolic networks context in the search for more direct applications to health. A promising era is coming where the term “antioxidant” is understood in terms of its broadest significance.

Abstract:Oxidative stress triggered by excessive free radicals is a major cause of ageing and related diseases,and a large number of natural products are known to have antioxidant effect.Recent studies suggest that a variety of peptides derived from traditional Chinese medicine can reduce oxidative damage by scavenging excessive free radicals and thus have a great potential in delaying ageing process and preventing oxidative stress-related diseases.This paper reviews the research progress on antioxidant activities of peptides derived from traditional Chinese medicine and the mechanism of action of antioxidant peptides.

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to compare the antioxidant capacities of seven natural pigments including the fat-soluble pigments curcumin, lycopene, lutein and beta-carotene and water-soluble pigments - betalain, capsanthin and cyanidin-3-rutinoside relative to a commonly-used synthetic food antioxidant BHA. The antioxidant capacities of seven pigments and BHA were evaluated based on their ability to quench several free radicals, including DPPH, ABTS, O-2(-), H2O2 as well as using FRAP assay. Specifically, curcumin and cyanidin-3-rutinoside, which showed the highest antioxidant capacities, were further investigated using a chicken erythrocyte model. After separating pretreatments of the two pigments, AAPH was added to the erythrocyte-pigment medium to induce oxidative stress. Then the attenuation effects of the two pigments on AAPH-induced oxidative damage in chicken erythrocytes were assessed. It was found that both curcumin and cyanidin-3-rutinoside significantly attenuated apoptosis and hemolysis, decreased MDA content, and increased T-SOD activity in a time- and dose- dependent manner. Abstract:The balance between oxidation and reduction is important for maintaining a healthy biological system. Oxidative stress results from an imbalance between excessive formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and/or reactive nitrogen species (RNS) and limited endogenous defense systems, and this imbalance can adversely alter lipids, proteins and DNA, causing a number of human diseases. Thus, exogenous antioxidants that can neutralize the effect of free radicals are needed to diminish the cumulative effects of oxidative damage over human life span. Current research reveals that phenolic compounds in plants possess high antioxidant activity and free radical scavenging capacity and can prevent the body from oxidative damage over human life span. This review focuses on the present understanding of free radicals and antioxidants and their importance in human health and disease. Information about the chemical features of free radicals as well as their deleterious effects on cell structures is reviewed. The chemical structure and anti-oxidative mechanisms of essential polyphenols and their potential health benefits are presented. In addition, the limitation of natural antioxidants and a perspective on likely future trends in this field are also discussed.

Abstract:Natural antioxidants are widely distributed in food and medicinal plants. These natural antioxidants, especially polyphenols and carotenoids, exhibit a wide range of biological effects, including anti-inflammatory, anti-aging, anti-atherosclerosis and anticancer. The effective extraction and proper assessment of antioxidants from food and medicinal plants are crucial to explore the potential antioxidant sources and promote the application in functional foods, pharmaceuticals and food additives. The present paper provides comprehensive information on the green extraction technologies of natural antioxidants, assessment of antioxidant activity at chemical and cellular based levels and their main resources from food and medicinal plants.
