Abstract:We prove that rank-three bipartite entangled states are distillable. So there are no bound rank-three bipartite entangled states. By using this fact, we present some families of rank-four states that are distillable. We also analyze the relation between the rank-three state and the Werner state.

Abstract:Entanglement distillation is a key task in quantum-information processing. In this paper, we distill non-positive-partial-transpose (NPT) bipartite states of some given Schmidt rank and matrix rank. We show that all bipartite states of Schmidt rank two are locally equivalent to classical-classical states, and all bipartite states of Schmidt rank three are 1-undistillable. Subsequently, we show that low-rank B-irreducible NPT states are distillable for large-rank reduced density operators by proving low-rank B-irreducible NPT state whose range contains a product vector is distillable. Eventually, we present an equivalent condition to distill $M\times N$ bipartite states of rank $\max\{M,N\}+1$.

Abstract:Assume that Alice, Bob, and Charlie share a tripartite pure state $|\psi_{ABC}\rangle$. We prove that if Alice cannot distill entanglement with either Bob or Charlie using $|\psi_{ABC}\rangle$ and local operations with any one of the following configurations for classical communication: $(A\to B, A\leftrightarrow C), (A\leftrightarrow B, A\to C),$ and $(A\leftrightarrow B, A\leftrightarrow C)$, then the same is also true for the other two configurations. Moreover, this happens precisely when the state is such that both its reductions on systems $AB$ and $AC$ are separable, which is further equivalent to the reductions being PPT. This, in particular, implies that any NPT bipartite state is such that either the state itself or its complement is 2-way distillable. To prove these results, we first obtain an explicit lower bound on the 2-way distillable entanglement of low rank bipartite states. Furthermore, we show that even though not all low rank states are 1-way distillable, a randomly sampled low rank state will almost surely be 1-way distillable.

Abstract:We show that a mixed state ρ = ∑mnamn|m〉〈n| can be realized by an ensemble of pure states {pk, |φk〉} where $|\Phi _k \rangle = \sum _m \sqrt {a_{mm} } e^{i\theta _m^k } |m\rangle $. Employing this form, we discuss the relative entropy of entanglement of Schmidt correlated states. Also, we calculate the distillable entanglement of a class of mixed states.

Abstract:An important open problem in quantum information theory is the question of the existence of NPT bound entanglement. In the past years, little progress has been made, mainly because of the lack of mathematical tools to address the problem. (i) In an attempt to overcome this, we show how the distillability problem can be reformulated as a special instance of the separability problem, for which a large number of tools and techniques are available. (ii) Building up to this we also show how the problem can be formulated as a Schmidt number problem. (iii) A numerical method for detecting distillability is presented and strong evidence is given that all 1-copy undistillable Werner states are also 4-copy undistillable. (iv) The same method is used to estimate the volume of distillable states, and the results suggest that bound entanglement is primarily a phenomenon found in low dimensional quantum systems. (v) Finally, a set of one parameter states is presented which we conjecture to exhibit all forms of distillability.

Abstract:It is well known that any entangled mixed state in $2\otimes 2$ systems can be purified via infinite copies of the mixed state. But can one distill a pure maximally entangled state from finite copies of a mixed state in any bipartite system by local operation and classical communication? This is more meaningful in practical application. We give a necessary and sufficient condition of this distillability. This condition can be expressed as: there exists distillable-subspaces. According to this condition, one can judge whether a mixed state is distillable or not easily. We also analyze some properties of distillable-subspaces, and discuss the most efficient purification protocols. Finally, we discuss the distillable enanglement of two-quibt system for the case of finite copies.

Abstract:Employing the general BXOR operation and local state discrimination, the mixed state of the form \rho^{(k)}_{d}=\frac{1}{d^{2}}\sum_{m,n=0}^{d-1}(|\phi_{mn}><\phi_{mn}|)^{\otim es k} is proved to be quasi-pure, where $\{|\phi_{mn}>\}$ is the canonical set of mutually orthogonal maximally entangled states in $d\times d$. Therefore irreversibility does not occur in the process of distillation for this family of states. Also, the distillable entanglement is calculated explicitly.

Abstract:We present a new method of analytically deriving the entanglement of formation of the bipartite mixed state. The method realizes the optimal decomposition families of states. Our method can lead to many new results concerning entanglement of formation, its additivity and entanglement cost. We illustrate it by investigating the two-qubit state, the separable state, the maximally correlated state, the isotropic state and the Werner state.

Abstract:The tensor rank (also known as generalized Schmidt rank) of multipartite pure states plays an important role in the study of entanglement classifications and transformations. We employ powerful tools from the theory of homogeneous polynomials to investigate the tensor rank of symmetric states such as the tripartite state vertical bar W-3 > = 1/root 3(vertical bar 100 > + vertical bar 010 > + vertical bar 001 >) and its N-partite generalization vertical bar W-N >. Previous tensor rank estimates are dramatically improved and we show that (i) three copies of vertical bar W-3 > have a rank of either 15 or 16, (ii) two copies of vertical bar W-N > have a rank of 3N - 2, and (iii) n copies of vertical bar W-N > have a rank of O(N). A remarkable consequence of these results is that certain multipartite transformations, impossible even probabilistically, can become possible when performed in multiple-copy bunches or when assisted by some catalyzing state. This effect is impossible for bipartite pure states.

Abstract:Modern Physics Letters B, Ahead of Print. In this paper, we delve into a nuanced aspect of the distillability problem within the realm of entanglement theory, specifically examining the distillability of anti-diagonal [math] entangled Werner states under the framework of local operations and classical communication (LOCC). To address this, we scrutinize a conjecture central to the distillability issue, initially focusing on its implications in 4-dimensional and 5-dimensional contexts. Through rigorous calculations, we establish that these cases align with the conjecture. Subsequently, we broaden our investigation to encompass [math] matrices, demonstrating that both even and odd n-dimensional anti-diagonal matrices are in concordance with the conjecture, thus contributing to a deeper understanding of the distillability problem in quantum entanglement.

Abstract:The time evolution of a maximally entangled bipartite systems is presented in this paper. The distillability criterion is given in terms of Kraus operators. Using the criterion, we discuss the distillability of $2\times 2$ and $n\times n (n>2)$ systems in their evolution process. There are two distinguished processes, dissipation and decoherence, which may destroy the distillability. We discuss the effects of those processes on distillability in details.

Abstract:We give a further investigation of the range criterion and low-to-high rank generating mode introduced in Chen and Chen [Phys. Rev. A 73, 052310 (2006)], which can be used for the classification of 2xMxN states under reversible local filtering operations. By using these techniques, we entirely classify the family of 2x4x4 states, which actually contains infinitely many kinds of states. The classifications of true entanglement of 2x(M+3)x(2M+3) and 2x(M+4)x(2M+4) systems are briefly listed, respectively.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose two general entanglement distillation protocols, which can concentrate the non-maximally entangled pure W class state. The general protocols are mainly based on the unitary transformation on the auxiliary particle and one of the three entangled particles, and in the second protocol, the entanglement distillation includes two meanings, namely, extracting the concentrated tripartite entangled W state and obtaining the maximally entangled bipartite state from the garbage state, which gives no contribution to the distillation of non-maximally entangled pure W class state. We can make use of the garbage in the distillation process, and make the entanglement waste in quantum communication as small as possible. A feasible physical scheme is suggested based on the cavity QED.

Abstract:The distillable randomness of a bipartite quantum state is an information-theoretic quantity equal to the largest net rate at which shared randomness can be distilled from the state by means of local operations and classical communication. This quantity has been widely used as a measure of classical correlations, and one version of it is equal to the regularized Holevo information of the ensemble that results from measuring one share of the state. However, due to the regularization, the distillable randomness is difficult to compute in general. To address this problem, we define measures of classical correlations and prove a number of their properties, most importantly that they serve as upper bounds on the distillable randomness of an arbitrary bipartite state. We then further bound these measures from above by some that are efficiently computable by means of semi-definite programming, we evaluate one of them for the example of an isotropic state, and we remark on the relation to quantities previously proposed in the literature.

Abstract:Equivalence between Positive Partial Transpose (PPT) entanglement and bound entanglement is a long-standing open problem in quantum information theory. So far limited progress has been made, even on the seemingly simple case of Werner states bound entanglement. The primary challenge is to give a concise mathematical representation of undistillability. To this end, we propose a decomposition of the N-undistillability verification into $log(N)$ repeated steps of 1-undistillability verification. For Werner state N-undistillability verification, a bound for N-undistillability is given, which is independent of the dimensionality of Werner states. Equivalent forms of inequalities for both rank one and two matrices are presented, before transforming the two-undistillability case into a matrix analysis problem. A new perspective is also attempted by seeing it as a non-convex multi-variable function, proving its critical points and conjecturing Hessian positivity, which would make them local minimums.

On convertibility among bipartite 2x2 entangled states

Abstract:Some progress is reported on conditions for convertibility among bipartite 2x2 entangled states: An inconvertibility condition related to the rank of an entangled state is given that it is impossible to convert to an entangled state with lower rank under separable operations; a particular set of local operations and classical communication (LOCC) is used to analyze convertibility of three subclasses of states - Werner states, Bell diagonal states and maximally entangled mixed states (MEMS). It is conjectured that MEMS may lie on the bottom of entangled state ordering for given entanglement of formation. A plausible way is suggested of systematically calculating convertibility in a general subclass of bipartite states whose density matrices are defined to be diagonal in a common basis. The set of LOCC adopted in this work is argued to be generalizable to provide sufficient conditions for convertibility among a large range of general 2x2 entangled states.
