Abstract:Entanglement distillation is a key task in quantum-information processing. In this paper, we distill non-positive-partial-transpose (NPT) bipartite states of some given Schmidt rank and matrix rank. We show that all bipartite states of Schmidt rank two are locally equivalent to classical-classical states, and all bipartite states of Schmidt rank three are 1-undistillable. Subsequently, we show that low-rank B-irreducible NPT states are distillable for large-rank reduced density operators by proving low-rank B-irreducible NPT state whose range contains a product vector is distillable. Eventually, we present an equivalent condition to distill $M\times N$ bipartite states of rank $\max\{M,N\}+1$.

Abstract:The bipartite quantum states ρ, with rank strictly smaller than the maximum of the ranks of the reduced states ρA and ρB, are distillable by local operations and classical communication (Horodecki P, Smolin J A, Terhal B M and Thapliyal A V 2003 Theor. Comput. Sci. 292 589–96; 1999 arXiv:quant-ph/9910122). Our first main result is that this is also true for NPT states with rank equal to this maximum. (A state is PPT if the partial transpose of its density matrix is positive semidefinite, and otherwise it is NPT.) This was conjectured first in 1999 in the special case when the ranks of ρA and ρB are equal (see (Horodecki P, Smolin J A, Terhal B M and Thapliyal A V 2003 Theor. Comput. Sci. 292 589–96; 1999 arXiv:quant-ph/9910122). Our second main result provides a complete solution of the separability problem for bipartite states of rank 4. Namely, we show that such a state is separable if and only if it is PPT and its range contains at least one product state. We also prove that the so-called checkerboard states are distillable if and only if they are NPT.

Abstract:Qualifying the entanglement of a mixed multipartite state by gauging its distance to the nearest separable state of a fixed rank is a challenging but critically important task in quantum technologies. Such a task is computationally demanding partly because of the necessity of optimization over the complex field in order to characterize the underlying quantum properties correctly and partly because of the high nonlinearity due to the multipartite interactions. Representing the quantum states as complex density matrices with respect to some suitably selected bases, this work offers two avenues to tackle this problem numerically. For the rank-1 approximation, an iterative scheme solving a nonlinear singular value problem is investigated. For the general low-rank approximation with probabilistic combination coefficients, a projected gradient dynamics is proposed. Both techniques are shown to converge globally to a local solution. Numerical experiments are carried out to demonstrate the effectiveness and the efficiency of these methods.

Abstract:The relation between the distillability of entanglement of three bipartite reduced density matrices from a tripartite pure state has been studied in Hayashi and Chen [2011Phys. Rev.A84012325]. We extend this result to the tripartite mixed state of rank at most three. In particular we show that if the state has two bipartite reduced density operators with rank two, then the third bipartite reduced density operator additionally having non positive partial transpose (non-PPT) is distillable. In contrast, we show that the tripartite PPT state with two reduced density operators of rank two is a three-qubit fully separable state. We obtain these facts by proving a conjectured matrix inequality for the bipartite matrixMwith Schmidt rank at most three. This is one of the main results of this paper. We also prove it for someMwith arbitrary Schmidt rank.

Abstract:The tensor rank (also known as generalized Schmidt rank) of multipartite pure states plays an important role in the study of entanglement classifications and transformations. We employ powerful tools from the theory of homogeneous polynomials to investigate the tensor rank of symmetric states such as the tripartite state vertical bar W-3 > = 1/root 3(vertical bar 100 > + vertical bar 010 > + vertical bar 001 >) and its N-partite generalization vertical bar W-N >. Previous tensor rank estimates are dramatically improved and we show that (i) three copies of vertical bar W-3 > have a rank of either 15 or 16, (ii) two copies of vertical bar W-N > have a rank of 3N - 2, and (iii) n copies of vertical bar W-N > have a rank of O(N). A remarkable consequence of these results is that certain multipartite transformations, impossible even probabilistically, can become possible when performed in multiple-copy bunches or when assisted by some catalyzing state. This effect is impossible for bipartite pure states.

Abstract: Entanglement distillation is a basic task in quantum information, and the distillable entanglement of three bipartite reduced density matrices from a tripartite pure state has been studied in [Phys. Rev. A 84, 012325 (2011)]. We extend this result to tripartite mixed states by studying a conjectured matrix inequality, namely $\mathop{\rm rank}(\sum_i R_i \otimes S_i)\leq K \mathop{\rm rank}(\sum_i R_i^T \otimes S_i)$ holds for any bipartite matrix $M=\sum_i R_i \otimes S_i$ and Schmidt rank $K$. We prove that the conjecture holds for $M$ with $K=3$ and some special $M$ with arbitrary $K$.

Abstract:Nowadays, there are plenty of separability criteria which are used to detect entanglement. Many of them are limited to apply for some cases. In this paper, we propose a separability criterion for arbitrary multipartite pure state which is based on the rank of reduced density matrix. It is proved that the rank of reduced density matrices of a multipartite state is closely related to entanglement. In fact it can be used to characterize entanglement. Our separability criterion is a necessary and sufficient condition for detecting entanglement. Furthermore, it is able to help us find the completely separable form of a multipartite pure state according to some explicit examples. Finally it demonstrates that our method are more suitable for some specific case. Our separability criterion are simple to understand and it is operational.

Abstract:Assume that Alice, Bob, and Charlie share a tripartite pure state $|\psi_{ABC}\rangle$. We prove that if Alice cannot distill entanglement with either Bob or Charlie using $|\psi_{ABC}\rangle$ and local operations with any one of the following configurations for classical communication: $(A\to B, A\leftrightarrow C), (A\leftrightarrow B, A\to C),$ and $(A\leftrightarrow B, A\leftrightarrow C)$, then the same is also true for the other two configurations. Moreover, this happens precisely when the state is such that both its reductions on systems $AB$ and $AC$ are separable, which is further equivalent to the reductions being PPT. This, in particular, implies that any NPT bipartite state is such that either the state itself or its complement is 2-way distillable. To prove these results, we first obtain an explicit lower bound on the 2-way distillable entanglement of low rank bipartite states. Furthermore, we show that even though not all low rank states are 1-way distillable, a randomly sampled low rank state will almost surely be 1-way distillable.

Abstract:Characterizing the relations among the three bipartite reduced density operators $ \rho _{AB}$ , $ \rho _{AC}$ and $ \rho _{BC}$ of a tripartite mixed state $ \rho _{ABC}$ has been an open problem in quantum information. One of such relations has been reduced by [Cadney et al, LAA. 452, 153, 2014] to a conjectured inequality in terms of matrix rank, namely $r(\rho _{AB}) \cdot r( \rho _{AC})\ge r( \rho _{BC})$ for any $ \rho _{ABC}$ . It is denoted as open problem 41 in the website “Open quantum problems-IQOQI Vienna”. We prove the inequality, and thus establish a complete picture of the four-party linear inequalities in terms of the 0-entropy. Our proof is based on the construction of a novel canonical form of bipartite matrices under local equivalence. We extend our result to inequalities in multipartite systems, as well as the condition when the inequality is saturated.

Abstract:The concurrence vectors are proposed by employing the fundamental representation of A n Lie algebra, which provides a clear criterion to evaluate the entanglement of bipartite systems of arbitrary dimension. Accordingly, a state is separable if the norm of its concurrence vector vanishes. The state vectors related to SU(3) states and SO(3) states are discussed in detail. The sign situation of nonzero components of concurrence vectors of entangled bases presents a simple criterion to judge whether the whole Hilbert subspace spanned by those bases is entangled, or there exists an entanglement edge. This is illustrated in terms of the concurrence surfaces of several concrete examples.

Abstract:We consider rotationally invariant states in $\mathbb{C}^{N_{1}}\ot \mathbb{C}^{N_{2}}$ Hilbert space with even $N_{1}\geq 4$ and arbitrary $N_{2}\geq N_{1}$, and show that in such case there always exist states which are inseparable and remain positive after partial transposition, and thus the PPT criterion does not suffice to prove separability of such systems. We demonstrate it applying a map developed recently by Breuer [H.-P. Breuer, Phys. Rev. Lett {\bf 97}, 080501 (2006)] to states that remain invariant after partial time reversal.

Abstract:We give a further investigation of the range criterion and low-to-high rank generating mode introduced in Chen and Chen [Phys. Rev. A 73, 052310 (2006)], which can be used for the classification of 2xMxN states under reversible local filtering operations. By using these techniques, we entirely classify the family of 2x4x4 states, which actually contains infinitely many kinds of states. The classifications of true entanglement of 2x(M+3)x(2M+3) and 2x(M+4)x(2M+4) systems are briefly listed, respectively.

Abstract:It is known that entangled mixed states that are positive under partial transposition (PPT states) must have rank at least four. In a previous paper we presented a classification of rank four entangled PPT states which we believe to be complete. In the present paper we continue our investigations of the low rank entangled PPT states. We use perturbation theory in order to construct rank five entangled PPT states close to the known rank four states, and in order to compute dimensions and study the geometry of surfaces of low rank PPT states. We exploit the close connection between low rank PPT states and product vectors. In particular, we show how to reconstruct a PPT state from a sufficient number of product vectors in its kernel. It may seem surprising that the number of product vectors needed may be smaller than the dimension of the kernel.

Abstract:We show that the length of a qubit-qutrit separable state is equal to max(r,s), where r is the rank of the state and s the rank of its partial transpose. We refer to the ordered pair (r,s) as the birank of this state. We also construct examples of qubit-qutrit separable states of any feasible birank (r,s). We determine the closure of the set of normalized two-qutrit entangled states having positive partial transpose (PPT) of rank 4. The boundary of this set consists of all separable states of length at most 4. We prove that the length of any qubit-qudit separable state of birank (d + 1, d + 1) is equal to d + 1. We also show that all qubit-qudit PPT entangled states of birank (d + 1, d + 1) can be built in a simple way from edge states. If V is a subspace of dimension k < d in a 2 circle times d space such that V contains no product vectors, we show that the set of all product vectors in V-perpendicular to is a vector bundle of rank d - k over the projective line. Abstract:One of the most important problems in quantum information is the separability problem, which asks whether a given quantum state is separable. We investigate multipartite states of rank at most four which are PPT (i.e., all their partial transposes are positive semidefinite). We show that any PPT state of rank two or three is separable and has length at most four. For separable states of rank four, we show that they have length at most six. It is six only for some qubit-qutrit or multiqubit states. It turns out that any PPT entangled state of rank four is necessarily supported on a 3x3 or a 2x2x2 subsystem. We obtain a very simple criterion for the separability problem of the PPT states of rank at most four: such a state is entangled if and only if its range contains no product vectors. This criterion can be easily applied since a four-dimensional subspace in the 3x3 or 2x2x2 system contains a product vector if and only if its Pluecker coordinates satisfy a homogeneous polynomial equation (the Chow form of the corresponding Segre variety). We have computed an explicit determinantal expression for the Chow form in the former case, while such expression was already known in the latter case.

Abstract:We study multipartite entanglement under stochastic local operations and classical communication (SLOCC) and propose the entanglement classification under SLOCC for arbitrary-dimensional multipartite (n-qudit) pure states via the rank of coefficient matrix, together with the permutation of qudits. The ranks of the coefficient matrices have been proved to be entanglement monotones. The entanglement classification of the 2 ⊗ 2 ⊗ 2 ⊗ 4 system is discussed in terms of the generalized method, and 22 different SLOCC families are found.

Abstract:Motivated by the Kronecker product approximation technique, we have developed a very simple method to assess the inseparability of bipartite quantum systems, which is based on a realigned matrix constructed from the density matrix. For any separable state, the sum of the singular values of the matrix should be less than or equal to 1. This condition provides a very simple, computable necessary criterion for separability, and shows powerful ability to identify most bound entangled states discussed in the literature. As a byproduct of the criterion, we give an estimate for the degree of entanglement of the quantum state.

Abstract:Tensor networks are used to efficiently approximate states of strongly-correlated quantum many-body systems. More generally, tensor network approximations may allow to reduce the costs for operating on an order-$N$ tensor from exponential to polynomial in $N$, and this has become a popular approach for machine learning. We introduce the idea of imposing low-rank constraints on the tensors that compose the tensor network. With this modification, the time and space complexities for the network optimization can be substantially reduced while maintaining high accuracy. We detail this idea for tree tensor network states (TTNS) and projected entangled-pair states. Simulations of spin models on Cayley trees with low-rank TTNS exemplify the effect of rank constraints on the expressive power. We find that choosing the tensor rank $r$ to be on the order of the bond dimension $m$, is sufficient to obtain high-accuracy groundstate approximations and to substantially outperform standard TTNS computations. Thus low-rank tensor networks are a promising route for the simulation of quantum matter and machine learning on large data sets.
