Abstract:Abstract DC transformer (DCT) is basic and important power conversion equipment in DC distribution network. DC transformer adopts power electronic switches and high-frequency transformer, which can realize power conversion. Multi-ports DCT can connect many different types of power supply or load equipment, and can flexibly control the current, voltage and power flow of multiple ports, which is widely used in DC distribution network. In this paper, the output voltage control model of multi-ports DCT in steady state is established. Combined with the control model, the mechanism of controlling the phase-shift angle to realize the output voltage control is proved mathematically. The correctness of the control model is verified by simulation.

Abstract:High-frequency transformers, the core component of power electronic transformers, operates under high-frequency, square voltage. At the rising/falling edge of the squared voltage wave, overvoltage and uneven electric field distribution occur among transformer windings, especially among the fast few turns. This can cause uneven electric stress in the dielectric space and local concentration of the electric field in the insulation of the transformer, which can easily lead to premature aging of the insulation or even insulation breakdown. This paper proposes to use COMSOL and SIMULINK co-simulation to calculate the transient electric field distribution of the transformer during the rising/falling edge of the input voltage, providing a basis guideline for the insulation design of high-frequency transformers.

Abstract:Wireless power transfer has been proved promising in various applications. The homogeneous winding method in loosely coupled transformers incurs unnecessary intense magnetic field distribution in the center and causes extra magnetic loss. An inhomogeneous winding method is proposed in this paper, and a relatively homogeneous magnetic field distribution inside the core is achieved. This paper investigated the magnetic loss of homogeneous winding and inhomogeneous winding for wireless power transfer. A theoretical model was built to evaluate magnetic loss under inhomogeneous winding. The coupling coefficient and magnetic loss were investigated individually and comparisons were made between different width ratio combinations. Theoretical analysis was validated in experiments.

Abstract:This paper uses multi-conductor transmission line (MTL) to model transformer windings. According to the symmetry of windings, a 2D equivalent finite element model can be set up under ANSYS environment. On the basis, finite element method (FEM) is used to calculate the distributed parameters in transformer windings. In the process of calculation, the skin effect is focused on. The frequency-dependent parameters are calculated at the different frequency points based on FEM. Therefore, the calculating parameters are helpful to research on propagation characteristics of PD pulses in electric equipments.

Abstract:For the machines powered by SiC inverters, the high voltage variation rate (dv/dt) leads to uneven voltage distribution in windings, and affects the insulation service life. To predict the influence of SiC inverter steep voltage waveform on the voltage distribution, a high frequency transmission line model is studied in this paper. The capacitance and impedance parameters at different frequencies, which are used in the studied model, are simulated with finite element method considering the laminated structure of silicon steel sheets. Further more, the frequency domain characteristics of the winding impedance are derived with vector fitting method. Based on the studied model, using the simulated and derived parameters, time domain simulation is carried out to predict the voltage distribution in each turn of the coil, and compared with the experimental results.

Abstract:The modelling of the distribution transformer winding is the starting point and serves as important basis for the transformer characteristics analysis and the lightning pulse response prediction. A distributed parameters model can depict the winding characteristics accurately, but it requires complex calculations. Lumped parameter model requires less calculations, but its applicable frequency range is not wide. This paper studies the amplitude-frequency characteristics of the lightning wave, compares the transformer modelling methods and finally proposes a modified lumped parameter model, based on the above comparison. The proposed model minimizes the errors provoked by the lumped parameter approximation, and the hyperbolic functions of the distributed parameter model. By this modification it becomes possible to accurately describe the winding characteristics and rapidly obtain the node voltage response. The proposed model can provide theoretical and experimental support to lightning protection of the distribution transformer.

Abstract:Because of the high prices and difficulties to conduct short-current tests of large power transformers, it is meaningful to analyze the dynamic electromagnetic force analysis of the transformer windings through finite element software. Research in this paper presents a model of the 50000MVA/110KV three phase transformer established by COMSOL. Different conditions of short-circuit current are applied to the model, testing the dynamic electromagnetic forces of the transformer windings. Results of the paper may be useful for investigating the winding deformation state prediction.

Abstract:Power transformers are considered as an essential component in the electric power systems. They are placed in services in different circumstances like electrical, environmental and mechanical stresses, and through the progress of operation it can affect with various threats and hazards. Transformer failure should be diagnosed earlier in order to avoid its unsafe and unstable operation. The main reason for failure of insulation in power transformer is due to partial discharges. The partial discharge activity occurring in the transformer have to be identified earlier, afore it progresses into a complete discharge, otherwise it results in the maintenance of the device and causes loss of economic cost to the utilities. In this paper, multi conductor transmission line theory is used for the modelling of transformer windings and the partial discharge pulse propagation through the winding is simulated in the MATLAB Simulink. The effect of partial discharge on the windings are also discussed.

Abstract:When used in high insulation voltage DC-DC converter occasions, the influence of planar transformer winding structure on winding loss is more severe. In high-voltage applications, Dowell's classic one-dimensional model and two-dimensional model show poor precision due to the lack of accurate current distribution analysis in the horizontal direction. To eliminate the error, this paper proposes an improved one-dimensional model to solve the detailed current distribution in PCB windings, which helps further evaluate the winding loss under the influence of structure and frequency. Then the influence of winding structure on the current distribution and loss is analyzed. A high voltage planar transformer is designed and tested based on the analysis above to prove the effectiveness of the model.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel model for transformer windings to accurately represent the duality between electrical and magnetic circuits. The model can be used for the calculation of high-frequency transients in power systems and the design of high-frequency transformers, for example, those to be used in solid-state (utility-grade) transformers and power electronic converters. Existing circuit models do not consider the flux linkage in the winding thickness in a physical (dual) way. Duality is achieved by discretizing the winding thickness into thin sub-sections and distributing the proposed model building block across the winding. Analytical calculations are carried out to compare the accuracy of the proposed circuit for the computation of the terminal impedance, flux duality, and current distribution in the physical geometry of the winding. Further discretization is performed to extend the circuit to represent high-frequency phenomena: eddy currents and capacitive effects. The model can be easily implemented in any circuit simulation program using available circuit elements. The circuit parameters are computed with very simple expressions. The model is validated with finite element simulations. Differences of around 1% are obtained for relatively low model orders for high frequencies.

Abstract:Bundle conductors are widely used in HV transmission lines to suppress the corona discharge and reduce the line reactance. To determine its current ampacity of multi-conductor bundle, the thermal analysis is indispensable. A three-dimensional flow-thermal coupling model of multi-conductor bundle considering the effect of strong wind is developed in our study. Using the finite element method, both the temperature field and the fluid field are computed; the characteristics for the multi-physics fields are discussed; the interaction between the fields as well as the mutual influence between subconductors are elucidated. Moreover, a set of sensitivity analysis have been performed, and the effects of load current, conductor spacing, wind speed on temperature field and fluid field are investigated. Based on the pitch-diameter ratio, a novel method to improve the thermal performance of multi-conductor bundle is proposed. Finally, the optimized structure is obtained, and the current ampacity is expected to be greatly enhanced.

Inter-Turn Breakdown Fault Analysis and Winding Structure Optimisation of Winding of Dry-Type Transformers in Wind Farms

Abstract:To address the problem of winding turn-to-turn breakdown faults in 35 kV dry-type transformers in wind farms under overvoltage conditions, this paper establishes a simulation model based on the structural dimensions and material parameters of the transformer windings. The winding distribution parameters were calculated using the finite element method. The transient processes inside the high-voltage coil were calculated by constructing a multi-conductor transmission line model (MTL) that took into account the influence of the secondary winding. The voltage distribution of the winding was analysed for both lightning shock and extra-fast transient overvoltage conditions. The simulation results show that the maximum overvoltage between turns of the transformer winding under lightning shock is 5.282 kV; the maximum overvoltage between turns of the winding under very fast transient overvoltage is 11.6 kV, which occurs between the first 2–3 layers of the section, close to the insulation breakdown margin. On this basis, the transformer winding structure was optimised and the maximum inter-turn overvoltage after optimisation was 9.104 kV, reducing the likelihood of insulation breakdown by 24.1%. Finally, the accuracy of the winding structure optimisation simulation study was verified by testing the transformer's impulse voltage before and after optimisation, providing a reference for the stable operation of 35 kV dry-type transformers in wind farm practical applications.

Abstract:The winding loss of Flyback transformer is difficult to calculate because the current flowing in both sides is not simultaneous, and the current phase shift at each harmonic between primary side and secondary side is not fixed at 180. This paper proposes a novel winding loss analysis model by considering the phase shift angle of the two current and building a new magnetic field in the region between each layer. The detailed theoretical analysis for a Flyback transformer with the proposed model is presented in this paper, the transition period is analyzed in detail to explain its effect on interleaving structure. Finally the analysis results based on the proposed model is verified with both FEA simulation and experimental results.
Calculation of Very Fast Transient Overvoltage Distributions in Large Power Transformer Windings

Abstract:When the distributions of very fast transient overvoltage (VFTO) in large power transformer windings are calculated using lumped RLC circuit model,the high frequency components of VFTO can not be calculated accurately even when the windings are divided on turn basis. The fast transient voltage distributions can be simulated accurately in a wider frequency range using the MTL model. However,the complexity of the solution for MTL equations limits its use in large power transformer windings. Consequently,we improved the lumped circuit model to a new one with a wider valid frequency range,simplified the MTL model for high frequency modeling,and reduced the complexity of its solution,so that the MTL model could be used for whole winding modeling of large windings. Then we established a piecewise model in frequency domain ,with which the VFTO distribution in large power transformer windings could be calculated more accurately and efficiently. On the part of the new lumped circuit model,rather than deriving the equations in electromagnetic field,we improved the original lumped circuit model from the mathematical equations of MTL model; then without increasing the complexity,the new lumped circuit model was proposed,with a valid frequency range about twice wider than the original one.

Abstract:There are some difficulties in using multi-transmission-line (MTL) model for wide band modeling of whole windings of the large power transformer. In this paper, the normalized MTL model is firstly derived, with which not only the difficulty of modeling windings with different turn-lengths using MTL can be solved, but also the model can be extended to the modeling of the multi-winding transformer. Secondly, both MTL model and the lumped circuit model on turn basis are mathematically compared in validation of the frequency range and it is pointed out that the lumped circuit model on turn basis is generally valid below 2.5 MHz for EHV and UHV power transformers. Finally, based on the MTL equations, a novel lumped circuit model is derived and it is shown that the valid frequency range of the new circuit is extended to about 4 MHz for modeling large EHV and UHV power transformer windings.

Abstract:In order to clarify the magnetic-thermal-force changing rule of high-frequency transformers under different winding arrangements, this paper tests the magnetization and loss characteristics of nanocrystalline materials at different temperatures, and based on the magnetization and loss data, establishes a magnetic-thermal-force coupling calculation model of 15 kVA, 5 kHz nanocrystalline high-frequency transformers, and calculates and analyzes the magnetic flux density, loss and temperature rise distributions of high-frequency transformers with three different winding arrangements under no-load and short-circuit conditions, respectively. Through comparative analysis, it was found that under no-load conditions, the cross-transposition of winding has less influence on the magnetic flux of the high-frequency transformer core, but it can reduce the iron-core loss and transformer temperature rise. The cross-transposition of winding under short-circuit conditions can significantly reduce the leakage magnetic field strength of high-frequency transformers; complete cross-transposition weakens the high-frequency transformer losses and temperature rise better than partial cross-transposition. According to the winding current density and core leakage field distribution under short-circuit conditions, we calculated and analyzed the distribution of its the axial and radial electromagnetic forces. The results show that the axial electromagnetic force causes the winding to be squeezed from both ends to the middle, the radial electromagnetic force causes the primary winding to shrink inward and the secondary winding to expand outward, so cross-transposition can greatly reduce electromagnetic force and weakening the deformation of the winding. Therefore, high-frequency transformers of winding cross-transposed should be used in actual projects to reduce transformer temperature rise and improve efficiency and security. This research has theoretical significance for the multi-physical field coupling of high-frequency transformers and its structural design.

Abstract:The multi-winding medium frequency transformer (MMFT) has attracted widespread attention, since its application in power electronic transformers can simplify the system structure and reduce the volume and weight. However, the special working conditions of MMFT due to high voltage and high power density increase the difficulty of insulation design for MMFT. For this issue, this paper presents a comprehensive analysis of electric filed characteristics for MMFT. First, the electric field model of MMFT is established using the 2-D finite element method. Based on it, the influences of connection mode, core structure, and hollow winding on the electric field characteristics of MMFT are studied, including the overall electric field distribution, maximum electric field intensity, and the electric field intensity along a fixed path. The results show that there are differences in the maximum electric field intensity for different connection modes and different core structures, which provides references for MMFT insulation design. The proposed modeling method and analysis results in this paper are important for insulation improvement of MMFT.

Abstract:For a high‐voltage DC (HVDC) transmission system, this paper describes an improved algorithm for the coupled multi‐phase transmission line model and complete procedures for the calculation of the DC‐side harmonic currents. First, based on the phase‐mode transformation, an improved coupled multi‐phase transmission line model is proposed. In other words, the transmission line is represented as a nodal admittance matrix form, considering computational accuracy and efficiency. In addition, when calculating the DC‐side harmonic currents, the line‐commutated converters at the rectifier side and the inverter side are equivalent to the three‐pulse harmonic voltage source models. Second, based on the DC‐side equivalent models mentioned previously and the nodal voltage analysis method, an analytical method and complete procedures for the calculation of the DC‐side harmonic currents in the HVDC systems, namely, the equivalent disturbing current, are described. Finally, a case study is carried out on a 4000 MW/±800 kV HVDC system. In the same condition, the analytical results are basically consistent with the simulation results of PSCAD/EMTDC, thus proving the accuracy of the proposed model. © 2019 Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan. Numerical Investigations for Vibration and Deformation of Power Transformer Windings under Short-Circuit Condition

Abstract:The analysis of the dynamic process of winding destabilization under sudden short-circuit conditions is of great importance to accurately assess the short-circuit resistance of power transformers. Based on magneto-solid coupling, an axisymmetric model of the transformer and a 3D multilayer model of the transformer considering the support components are established, respectively, and the short-circuit electromagnetic force (EF) is simulated by using the finite element method. It is concluded that the middle layer of the winding is subjected to the larger radial EF, while the axial EF has a greater effect on the layers at both ends. Moreover, the impression of the preload force, aging temperatures, and the area share of spacers on the vibration and deformation of windings are studied under short-circuit conditions. The overall distribution of plastic strain and residual stress in the winding is symmetrical, and the maximum values occur in the lower region of the middle of the winding. Finally, considering the material properties of disks and insulating components, the cumulative effect of plastic deformation under multiple successive short-circuit shocks is calculated. Compared with the traditional axisymmetric model of transformer, the three-dimensional multilayer model of the transformer established in this paper is more suitable for the actual winding structure and the obtained results are more accurate.
