Critical or Aesthetic, Consumption or Production——On the Contemporary Development of Western "Body" Discourse

Abstract:Since the second half of the twentieth century,western theorists show more and more concerns on the "body",instead of "consciousness",and the growing importance that the"body"possesses makes itself one of the core topics of philosophical discussion.This"turn over"campaign largely followed two approaches: one is Merleau-Ponty's phenomenology of perception,which was inspired by existentialism;the other is(de-) construction,illustrated by Foucault and Deleuze.The two ways combined the pragmatism of the United States,eventually epitomized to a"soma-aesthetics"hold by Shusterman.The rise of body discourse has,of course,a great function of emotional liberation,but meanwhile,the"body"was often misread and misused,and it should be avoided that the"body"becomes a new oppressive ideology.
