On Principle of "Context-based Defining of Word-meaning" Observed in Commentaries on "Guang Ya"

Abstract:This paper,by an analysis of the specific examples quoted in the book Commentaries on "Guang Ya"("Guang Ya" is a commentary dictionary on Chinese classics edited by Zhang Yi,an ancient Chinese scholar in the 3rd century),argues that its author Wang Niansun was able to distinguish the meaning of langue and the meaning of parole;however,in his proofreading commentaries,he still adhered to the traditional principle of "context-based defining of word-meaning",attaching more importance to the meaning of parole.The paper probes into the several manifestations of the principle observed in the book.
