Abstract:The bulk of the literature on corpus-based study of phraseology has focused on lexical words rather than grammatical words.The present study uses the data from CLEC and chooses the word of as the starting point to explore the phraseological features of grammatical words,and discover the homogeneous and heterogeneous phraseological features of grammatical words among Chinese learners of English with different English proficiencies.It begins with an analysis of the patterns of of,and the semantic sequences of "n of n".The results show that even in a small corpus,grammatical words can form a valid basis for empirical research into both patterns and meanings.We also find some homogeneous and heterogeneous phraseological features in sentences used by Chinese learners of English.First,the more proficient learners tend to use more phraseological units and more complex semantic sequences.Secondly,the semantic patterns of "property + of + entity/phenomenon,number + of + entity/phenomenon,process + of + object" are much easier to be acquired by Chinese learners,and there seems to exists a clear sequence in acquiring these constructions.
