Theory of Co-selection and the Corpus-driven Phraseology

Abstract:The theory of co-selection has far-reaching significances for descriptive linguistics and linguistic studies in general.It also provides an important theoretical perspective and a methodological framework for phraseological studies.This paper is intended to address major types of co-selection arising out of the communicative process,namely,co-selection of lexis and grammar,co-selection of lexis and lexis,and co-selection of patterns and meanings,which inevitably bring about various types of de facto multi-word units,cutting across the semantics-syntax and semantics-pragmatics interfaces.It also elaborates the notion of extended unit of meaning,its components and its methods of analysis,with a focus on semantic preference and semantic prosody as well as their abstractions.By way of illustration,the extended unit of meaning of the Chinese word zhanxian is explored to demonstrate the characteristics of corpus-driven phraseology,as distinguished from the classical phraseology.
