Abstract:Bismuth tungstate (Bi2WO6) nanocrystals with the average size of ca. 12 nm had been successfully synthesized by a simple solvothermal method at 180 degrees C for 2 h. The as-synthesized Bi2WO6 nanocrystals were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra. and N-2 adsorption-desorption measurements. The visible-light-driven photocatalytic activity of the sample was evaluated by photo-degradation of rhodamine-B (RhB) at room temperature, which is much higher than that of the hydrothermal synthesized Bi2WO6 square plates and the commercially available TiO2 (P-25). We believed that the high photocatalytic activity could be ascribed to the intrinsically small grain size and high surface-to-volume ratio associated with the Bi2WO6 nanocrystals. Abstract:A facile solution-phase process has been demonstrated for the selective preparation of single-crystalline bismuth nanowires and nanospheres by reducing sodium bismuthate with ethylene glycol in the presence of poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) or acetone. Bismuth nanobelts and Bi/Bi2O3 nanocables could be also obtained by changing some reaction parameters. Various techniques such as XRD, EDXA, SEM, TEM, HRTEM, and FT-IR have been used to investigate the physical characteristics of these low-dimensional bismuth nanostructures.

Abstract:Uniform-sized and monodispersed boehmite core–shell and hollow spheres have been successfully synthesized using a template-free solvothermal route. The experimental parameters such as reaction duration, the trisodium citrate amounts and solvents are shown to play important roles in the formation of the AlOOH core–shell and hollow spheres. X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform IR, thermal gravimetric analysis, N2 adsorption/desorption, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and high-resolution TEM were used to characterize the products. The results show that the prepared polycrystalline hollow spheres are composed of well-aligned AlOOH nanowires and have an orthorhombic structure. Finally, a dissolution–renucleation mechanism was proposed for the formation of boehmite hollow structures.

Abstract:Water-soluble dibenzoyl methane europium complexes doped silica nanospheres were synthesized by the sol-gel process. The nanospheres had a nearly spherical shape and an average size of 10-30 nm. The colloidal solutions of the dibenzoyl methane europium complexes doped silica nanospheres showed bright red luminescence upon short wavelength UV irradiation.

Abstract:The synthesis of bismuth tungstate (Bi2WO6) multilayered disk which was constructed by oriented square nanoplates was easily realized via a simple surfactant-free hydrothermal method. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) were used to investigate the as-obtained product. The results indicated that the three-dimensional (3D) Bi2WO6 multilayered disk was constructed by self-assembly of square nanoplates via a perfect oriented manner. The formation mechanism of the product was carefully investigated on the basis of the results of time-dependent experiments. In addition, studies of the photocatalytic property demonstrated that the as-obtained Bi2WO6 could exhibit excellent visible-light-driven photocatalytic activity for the degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB).

Abstract:Novel nano Bi spheres and hexagonal disks have been synthesized via the thermolysis of a bismuth-thiolate precursor in a mild solventless condition with the help of capping reagents that have shown an isotropic or anisotropic absorption tendency on the Bi crystal faces. Various techniques such as X-ray diffraction, electron dispersive spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, selected area electron diffraction, and atomic force microscopy have been used to characterize the purity, composition, and morphology of the nanoproducts. The experiments also reveal size dependencies based on thermolysis temperature and annealing time of both disks and spheres. In addition, the reactant molar ratio also affects the morphology. Finally, a possible growth mechanism has been proposed, and the as-synthesized disks and spheres have exhibited different UV-vis absorption spectra.

Abstract:As an important photocatalytic semiconductor, bismuth oxyhalides (BiOX, X = Cl, Br, and I) are typically prepared by liquid-phase strategies in the presence of solvents, which possess potential environmental implications. Herein, we demonstrate a fast and simple solvent-free mechanical grinding method for eco-friendly synthesis of BiOX for the first time. By mixing and grinding bismuth nitrate pentahydrate with potassium halides, BiOCl, BiOBr, and BiOI hierarchical flower-like nanostructures can be successfully prepared within 5 min. The possible reaction mechanism and growth process of the crystals are proposed based on the experimental results. Photoelectric conversion and coupling adsorptionphotodecomposition for wastewater purification both confirm that the as-prepared BiOX (X = Cl, Br, and I) possess favorable and stable photocatalytic activities. Consequently, the high efficiency solvent-free mechanical grinding method can be further investigated as a convenient method for economic industrial-scale preparation of bismuth oxyhalide composites with excellent photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:A novel solvothermal route has been developed to synthesize highly dispersed nanocrystalline barium titanate (BaTiO3), using a mixture of ethylenediamine and ethanolamine as a solvent. The as-synthesized BaTiO3 nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution TEM, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and thermal analysis. Based on the results of characterizations, the organic solvent was found to influence strongly the crystal growth and dispersibility of BaTiO3. The BaTiO3 nanoparticles obtained were highly dispersed and crystalline with a cubic perovskite structure. The particle size derived from the TEM ranged from 5 to 20 nm.

Abstract:Hexagonal Bi(Se,S) nanowires (20 nm x 1.5 mu m) were prepared for the first time via a mild solvothermal template reaction of BiCl3 with triphenylphosphine sulfide (TPPS) and elemental Se in ethylenediamine (en) at 120 degrees C for 20 h. In this process, the sulfur source TPPS as a template, the solvent ethylenediamine, and reaction temperature were critical factors of forming hexagonal Bi(Se,S) nanowires.

Abstract:Bismuth sulfide nanorods have been successfully prepared by a sonochemical method from an aqueous solution of bismuth nitrate and sodium thiosulfate in the presence of complexing agents. Bismuth sulfide nanorods with different diameters and lengths could be obtained by using different complexing agents including ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, triethanolamine, and sodium tartrate. Bi 2S3 nanorods have also been successfully prepared by choosing thioacetamide as the sulfur source. When 20% N,N-dimethylformamide was used as the solvent, higher yield was observed and smaller sizes of Bi2S3 nanorods were obtained. The products were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, selected area electron diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, IR spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Probable mechanisms for the sonochemical formation of Bi2S3 nanorods in aqueous solutions are proposed.

Abstract:Bismuth tungstate (Bi2WO6) has attracted great research interest as an important visible-light-responsive photocatalyst. In this paper, we report a facile hydrothermal route for the shape-controlled synthesis of micro/nanostructured Bi2WO6, without adding surfactants or templates. The results show that various morphologies of Bi2WO6 including coralloid spherical particles, packed nanosheets, fluffy microspheres, and plates can be obtained by adjusting the pH values of the precursors. The as-prepared porous fluffy microspheres with a hierarchical architecture synthesized at pH 8 exhibit the highest photocatalytic activity for the degradation of Rhodamine (RhB) under visible light irradiation. The photodegradation efficiency reaches as high as 99% within 20min irradiation. This enhanced photocatalytic activity can be attributed to the unique porous structure and high BET surface area of fluffy microspheres with hierarchical architecture.

Abstract:Template-assisted strategy is an effective method to obtain hollow nano/microspheres with uniform shape and size. However, acid, alkali, organic solvent and calcination are always required for the removal of template, resulting in the pollution of chemicals, VOCs emission or high energy-consumption. Here we report a water-soluble template prepared from α-calcium sulfate hemihydrate (α-HH) microspheres for the synthesis of ZnO particles with dense core-shell structure by two-step deposition-precipitation method. After the template of α-HH microspheres was removed simply by rinsing with water, the core-shell structured ZnO particles were turned into the hollow microspheres in the dimension of 0.8-1.2 μm. The ZnO hollow microspheres won large specific surface area and achieved the photocatalytic reaction rate constant of 5.59 times that of ZnO solid particles, which was assessed by the photodegradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) under UV light irradiation. This work develops α-HH microspheres into water-soluble template for the green synthesis of catalysts with hollow architecture so as to avoid chemicals pollution and high energy-consumption during the template removal.

Abstract:The successful synthesis of ZnS hollow microspheres by a solvothermal route is reported. The synthesis was achieved by a proper selection of a sulfur source, i.e., Na2S2O3⋅5H2O or (NH2)2CS, to react with Zn(CH3COO)2⋅2H2O in mixed solvents of ethylene glycol and deionized water. The ZnS products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and photoluminescence spectroscopy. XRD identified the ZnS products to have either zinc blende or wurtzite structure. SEM images revealed hollow ZnS microspheres with 1 to 2 μm diameters and 100 to 200 nm shell thicknesses. TEM images confirmed that the hollow ZnS microspheres were assembled by ZnS crystalline nanocrystallites. The room-temperature photoluminescence spectrum of the zinc blende hollow microspheres showed a strong green emission at 514 nm and weak emission at 379 nm.

Abstract:Nanosized bismuth tungsten oxide, Bi2WO6, has been successfully synthesized by a microwave hydrothermal approach for the first time, using Bi(NO3)3, NH3 and H2WO4 as the starting materials. The influences of the reaction conditions (including starting materials, concentration, reaction temperature, and holding time) on the phases and morphologies of the products are investigated by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The best conditions for the synthesis are provided. Transmission electron microscopic results reveal that the as-prepared particles are sheet-shaped. The experiments show that the microwave hydrothermal approach is a satisfactory method for the synthesis of the Bi2WO6 nanocrystals. Meanwhile, the photocatalytic activity of Bi2WO6 nanoplates for the degradation of methylene blue under visible light irradiation (λ>400nm) is much higher than that of samples prepared by the solid-state reaction.

Abstract:Bismuth tungstate hierarchical nest-like structures built by higher order nanoplate alignment have been successfully synthesized by a facile and economical method in the presence of polyvinyl pyrrolidone. The formation mechanism and effect of reaction time on the products were investigated. In addition, studies of the photocatalytic property demonstrate that the as-synthesized Bi2WO6 structures show excellent photocatalytic activity exposure to visible light irradiation. Furthermore, we first explored the electrochemical property of the Bi2WO6 nanostructure as an electrode in a lithium ion battery. Therefore, the preparation and properties studies of Bi2WO6 structures suggest potential future applications in photocatalysis by sunlight and as an electrode candidate in lithium ion batteries.

Abstract:Hierarchical hollow structures show particular properties and promising applications, and therefore have been attracting attention. To the best of our knowledge, ZnO/C hollow sphere constructed by octahedron has not been reported so far. In this paper, a solvothermal process has been developed to prepare precursor hollow spheres constructed by octahedron. The precursor can be converted to hollow ZnO/C spheres with well-preserved morphology via thermal decomposing. In order to research the formation mechanism, intermediate precursors were acquired at different reaction times, and a possible growth mechanism was also proposed. When the hierarchical ZnO/C hollow spheres constructed by octahedron were used as the adsorbents, the Langmuir model can well describe the adsorption isotherms. For Congo red and Pb(II), the maximum adsorption capacities are up to 392 and 314 mg g −1 , respectively. Furthermore, the as-prepared ZnO/C displays good recyclability in the removal of Congo red. Our results provide new strategy for the synthesis of novel ZnO/C hollow sphere, which has promising adsorption ability for water treatment.
