Abstract:This paper presents a ductility-centred analytical model for robustness assessment of axially restrained double-span steel beam systems further to sudden columns loss. The main benefit of the model is its ability of linking the response of semi-rigid beam-to-column joints to the load carrying capacity of the system, and in addition, the model supports the use of codified methods for joint response. The analytical model is first validated through comparisons against detailed double-span FE models, where it is found that the load-joint rotation responses of the axially restrained systems can be accurately captured by the analytical model, especially at catenary stages. Comparisons are also made against the FE results excluding the axial restraints. The axial restraints are shown to play a crucial role in the development of catenary action. Following the verification study, the analytical predictions of the double-span beam systems with varying parameters were further presented and discussed, and an illustrative design example was finally given to clearly demonstrate the practical use of the analytical model for robustness assessment of building frames. The analytical model is design effective and hand-calculable, and thus it brings convenience to robustness assessment of structures in practice. The proposed method may be considered as a feasible alternative method to detailed nonlinear dynamic analysis.
A Comparative Study of Alternative Approaches for Stability Design of Steel Frames

Abstract:Approaches for stability design of steel frames include the traditional and the modified effective length methods and the notional load approach. This paper presents a storey-based stability factor approach in which storey slenderness and a stability coefficient for a storey are defined, the stability of a storey is checked as a whole. Also presented are detailed comparison of the modified effective length approach, the notional load approach and the proposed storey-based method with FEM. Seven frames, with different bases or beam-to-column connections, one or two spans, one or two stories, with or without leaning columns, uniformly or unevenly loaded, are analysed. Various imperfections are considered. All frames are assumed to be axially loaded to serve as benchmark problems for checking the priority of available methods. It is found that the notional load approach is ideal for frames that are uniformly loaded, and if the modified effective length factors of columns are within 1∼2. The modified effective length is not accurate enough in considering the inter-column interaction of a storey failing in an elastic-plastic state. The proposed storey-based stability factor approach shows good agreement with FEM for all the frames analysed.
A simplified analysis on elastic plastic stability of flexural bracing-frame system

Abstract:This paper presents an analysis of the elastic-plastic stability of frames braced by flexural bracings. Because of the inherent complexity of the problem, a simplified model is used in the present paper in which the frame is replaced by a leaning column and the flexural bracing is modeled as a vertical column. Horizontal forces and vertical loads are exerted on the system, and equations for determining the required cross-sectional rigidity of the cantilever columns are established. It is found that the required cross-sectional rigidity under combined actions of horizontal loads and vertical loads is greater than the summation of the required rigidities under horizontal loads and vertical loads separately.

Abstract:Through revisiting the classic problems of elastic and elastic-plastic buckling of frames, elastic-plastic stability of beam-columns, buckling of column braced at mid-span by a horizontal brace and the buckling of dual structural systems, the paper proposed the concept of 'residual stiffness', i.e., the residual part of the total stiffness after deducting the stiffness depleted by horizontal forces and bending moments in the members. Check for stability of members and structures in real steel structures is to assure a minimum residual stiffness of the members and structures to resist against the destabilising effect of gravitational loads. Through analysis of the instability of beam-columns and dual structural systems, it is revealed that in the limit state, the stiffness due to the horizontal load (bending moment) is linearly or more than linearly decreased.
ON STABILITY OF I-SECTION STEEL CANTILEVERS

Abstract:This paper investigates the buckling of thin-walled cantilevers. Two different theories available in the literature are discussed, and a new one is presented which takes into account the nonlinear shear strain energy and the nonlinear transverse normal strain energy. The latter strain energy term has been ignored by previous researchers Comparison is made in this paper between the results of the present theory and those of previous experimental results for cantilevers with monosymmetrical sections. It is found that the results of the present theory is in a good agreement with experimental ones, and great discrepances are found between the theory neglecting the nonlinear transverse normal strain energy and the experimental results. Cantilevers with doubly symmetrical sections under uniform moment, uniformly transverse distributed load and concentrated load at free end are analyzed, respectively. Accurate and simple formulae for predicting the critical moments are proposed in which the effects of the load acting position are included.
Robust configuration analysis and experimental study of cable supported hyperbolic flat latticed shell structure

Abstract:Aiming at the problem that bad topological layout leads to poor structure robustness and based on the H2 norm of system transfer function, quantitative evaluation index of structural robustness and robust configuration solving method were established firstly. Secondly, the relative densities of elements were chosen as design variables and the solid isotropic material with penalization (SIMP) model was used to describe the stiffness of the material, the robustness based structural design was transformed into continuum topology optimization. Then, the big bang-big crunch (BB-BC) method was improved by two-stage search and was used to solve the continuum topology optimization model. After that, taking cable supported hyperbolic flat latticed shell structure with four supports as an example, robust configurations under different load conditions were analyzed and the optimized effect of BB-BC method with different parameters was explored too. At last, comparative analysis between optimized model and conventionally designed model was conducted by static experiment and impact experiment. Results show that the two-stage BB-BC method can be well implemented for the robust design of cable supported structure, the improved BB-BC method can speed up the convergence, and arranging members based on the robust configuration can significantly increase the structure's mechanical property and anti-interference capability.

Abstract:Considering semi-rigid connections, a 3-D FEM was established to simulate the fastener-style tubular steel formwork-support and the analysis was performed together with an experimental study of the torsion stiffness of right couplers. Both the linear and nonlinear buckling techniques were employed to determine the stability of the formwork-supports. In the nonlinear analytical model, Initial imperfection, plastic behavior and large deflection response of the formwork-supports were taken into account. Numerical results indicated the linear buckling loads were higher than that obtained from the nonlinear stability analysis. Nonlinear buckling analysis was employed to calculate the stability bearing capacity for cases of different design variables, and then the results were converted into effective length coefficients that are generally used in practice. The influence factors on the stability bearing capacity were studied. It was pointed out that the effects of initial imperfection and semi-rigid connection on the stability bearing capability are important, also a bolt tightening torque of 40 N·m was found to be quite reasonable.

Abstract:Obtaining a larger moment of inertia and overall stability with smaller material input, which is an effective way to improve the bearing capacity and reduce the self-weight of structural columns. This paper proposes a cross-section corrugated plate steel special-shaped column (CCSC), which is based on the optimization design idea of steel profiled-shaped column section, combined with the comprehensive consideration of the overall stability of steel structure column members, material use efficiency and building interior space utilization rate. The new CCSC is composed of three parts: core square steel pipe, corrugated plate, and flange plate. The high-out-of-plane stiffness characteristic of corrugated plate is utilized to improve the section rotation radius. The three parts above are coordinated to resist lateral load. The square steel pipe and flange plate are the main vertical bearing plates. The new special-shaped column can obtain a larger moment of inertia and overall stability with a smaller material input, thus improving the bearing capacity. Through the combination of theoretical analysis and numerical simulation, the overall stability of the axial compression of CCSC are analyzed, and the instability modes and failure modes of CCSC are revealed. The design method and suggestions for the stability of CCSC under axial compression are put forward. Then, the overall stability design and application suggestion based on conventional square steel tube is given. The results show that the stability design method of CCSC under axial compression can effectively judge the instability mode of CCSC and obtain the ultimate bearing capacity of the whole member. Compared with square steel tube columns with regularized slenderness ratio greater than 0.8 in structural design, the CCSC has obvious advantages in overall stability and steel consumption.

Abstract:The self?climbing scaffolding and formwork system can be applied widely in the construction of high rise concrete structures, in which the steel column climbing part and the framed tube supporting part alternatively support the system to realize the function of self?climbing. The steel column is a key component in the system, and there are openings on the plates of the column for the attachment of climbing devices, but the effective design method for the column is still lacked. In this paper, the stability of the steel column is studied. Firstly, considering the influence of the shear deformation and decrease of the section area due to the openings, the formulas for the elastic buckling loads of the column under axial compression about two main axis are derived, and they are verified by the numerical analysis results. Then, limiting the dimensions of the column to the commonly used ranges, the numerical analysis is conducted to verify the formulas of the ultimate capacity of the column, and the stability factors about two main axis are also determined. Finally, the design method for the steel column under axial compression is obtained.
Study on Stability Round Stronger Axis of the Column with Composite Section of Double Limbs under Axial Compression

Abstract:The section of the column under axial compression used in a certain electrostatic precipitator is composed of double H shaped steel limbs and the stiffened connecting web by weld. As the width of connecting web usually exceeds 3 times of the section height of H shaped steel, the axis which connecting web lies in is the weaker axis for the stiffness of column section, while the midperpendicular of connecting web is the stronger axis. In consideration of initial geometrical imperfections and weld residual stresses, the study on stability round the stronger axis of column subjected to axial compression by nonlinear finite element method is conducted. The research results indicate that the column doesn't present the flexural buckling round the stronger axis, but present the elasto-plastic flexural-torsional buckling. A buckling factor is produced to measure the stability performance of column round stronger axis. When the connecting channel shaped steels between two limbs and the stiffeners located on connecting web are strengthened, the buckling factor increases slightly. When the width-thickness ratio of connecting web increases, the buckling factor decreases significantly. When the slenderness of H shaped steel round the stronger axis is kept constant and the height-thickness ratio of H-shaped steel web increases, the buckling factor increases. Based on a great many computation results, the regressed recommendation is proposed how to evaluate the design buckling bearing capacity of column under axial compression round stronger axis.
A New Bearing Structure of Large Storage Tanks with A Reticulated Shell Dome and its Optimization

Abstract:In order to satisfy the security demand of the connection between the reticulated shell dome and the tank shell,a new simple and stressing definitely bearing structure for large storage tanks with a reticula-ted shell dome is proposed based on existing connecting structure.The ANSYS is chosen for the analysis,the Finite Element model of large storage tanks with a reticulated shell dome is set up and the performance of large storage tanks between new bearing structures and directly welded structures in aspects of strength, stiffness and whole stability is analyzed and compared.Applying optimization toolbox of ANSYS Work-bench,main dimensions of the new bearing structure are optimized and designed.Research results show that compared with directly welded structures,the new bearing structure can reduce the adverse stress in reticu-lated shell dome,improve the stress distribution of the connection by the rotation among components,which indicates that the new bearing structure is suitable for large storage tanks with a reticulated shell dome;the economy and lightweight of the new bearing structure can also be improved by the optimization.

Abstract:The application of Q420 and Q460 high strength hot-rolled steel angles in steel structures is increasing,but because of the high strength,the widthto-thickness ratio of some steel angles exceeds the code limitation,which does not satisfy the requirement of local buckling.The Chinese Code for Design of Steel Structures(GB 50017—2003)doesn't provide the corresponding design method for solving this problem.Based on the related Codes of the Chinese Technical Regulation of Design for Tower and Pole Structures of Overhead Transmission Line(DL/T 5154—2002)and the ASCE Design of Latticed Steel Transmission Structures(ANSI/ASCE 10—97),it was studied the stability design methods of Q420 and Q460 high strength hot-rolled steel angle members under axial compression,and analyzed the rationality of these methods,which provides a reference for the corresponding design.

Abstract:To enhance the local stability bearing capacity, a new section type of thin-walled high strength steel column with web stiffeners was proposed.Short column specimens with different section types were tested.The finite element model was developed and verified by test results.The local stability of the thin-walled high strength steel column with web stiffeners was analyzed based on test results and finite analysis results.The applicability of current direct strength method(DSM)for thin-walled high strength steel column with web stiffeners was evaluated.The results showed that DSM underestimated the effect of web stiffeners.
Numerical Investigation and Design of Thin-Walled Complex Section Steel Columns

Abstract:A numerical investigation of thin-walled complex section steel columns with intermediate stiffeners was performed using finite element analysis. An accurate and reliable finite element model was developed and verified against test results. Verification indicates that the model could predict the ultimate strengths and failure modes of the tested columns with reasonable accuracy. Therefore, the developed model was used for the parametric study. In addition, the effect of geometric imperfection on column ultimate strength and the effect of boundary conditions on the elastic distortional buckling of complex section columns were investigated. An equation for the elastic distortional buckling load of fixed-ended columns having different column lengths was proposed. The elastic distortional buckling load obtained from the proposed equation was used in the direct strength method to calculate the column ultimate strength. Generally, it is shown that the proposed design equation conservatively predicted the ultimate strengths of complex section columns with different column lengths.

Abstract:There are a lot of factors influencing the stability of aluminum axial compression members,such as material properties,initial geometric imperfections,section profile,thickness deviations,mechanical imperfections,etc.The design method of stability of aluminum axial compression members in foreign codes is introduced,and the current researches in our country are summarized.The overall buckling of aluminum axial compression members is simulated with general-purpose finite-element program ABAQUS.Through the comparison between the results of finite-element analysis and the research findings of some academicians,the feasibility of finite-element method is proved.Finally,some proposals for analysis of stability of aluminum axial compression members are put forward.
Research on Optimization of Column Structure Design for Dynamic Performance of Machine Tool

Abstract:Aiming at the optimization design of machine tool column structure which is weakest link, a method is presented based on topology optimization, ribs form selecting and layout, and size optimization. From kinetic analysis of the machine tool by finite element analysis (FEA), modal analysis and harmonic response analysis illustrate that the column structure is the key part to affect the dynamic performance of the machine tool. Taking the column as optimization object, its basic structure is designed by material distribution of topology optimization. Selecting the W ribs which have well bending stiffness and torsional stiffness to layout and optimize its sizes, the column structure is finally optimized. Analysis results demonstrate that the method effectively improve dynamic performance of the machine tool. On the premise of the column mass does not increase, 6 nature frequencies of the machine tool are increased with different degrees. The first nature frequency is increased by about 10%. The biggest resonance peaks of the machine tool inx direction are reduced by 49.8%,y direction 70.1%,zdirection 66.2%.

Abstract:In order to provide a basis for the compilation of the bending buckling stability part of axially compressed columns in the technical code for stainless steel structures, the design methods and experimental research data of similar components are collected and compared. The results showed that there are some deficiencies in the current European code for the design of stainless steel structures and the American code for the design of cold-formed stainless steel structures. According to the collected test data of square tube, rectangular tube, circular tube, elliptical tube, welded H-shaped steel, and cold-formed C-shaped steel for 199 section columns and according to the influence of cold-formed effect and residual stress on the stability of axial compression members, the members are divided into three categories: A, B, and C according to the section form, in which the columns with cold-formed square, rectangular hollow section, and lipped C-section were included in A, columns with circular and oval hollow section were sorted into B, columns with welded H-section were separated into C, and the three categories of axial compression stability curves are expressed in the form of Perry formula. The comparison with the test data shows that the three kinds of curves can well estimate the stability bearing capacity of members, and the discreteness is small. The reliability of the proposed formula is analyzed, and the results show that its reliability index β meets the requirements of the GB 50068 standard.

Abstract:The present investigation studies the overall stability bearing capacities of stainless steel welded I-section beams. Experimental tests of 8 specimens have been conducted. In addition, complementary finite element (FE) models, which have been validated by the test results, are adopted to calculate the overall stability bearing capacities of the beams. Based on the results of FE analyses and experimental tests, as well as the comparisons of design standards for buckling reduction factor calculations of stainless steel structural components, two calculation methods for buckling reduction factors of welded I-section beams are proposed. One is the modification of Chinese code for design of steel structures, and the other is regressed by the FE analysis results. Both methods are conservative and have simple formulations for engineering design.

Abstract:Based on a blind spot in the current design standard of steel structures, the large diameter thin-walled tube beam-columns are analyzed using nonlinear finite element method in this paper. The influence of several factors on stability capacity of the large diameter thin-walled tube beam-columns is taken into account. Thus, according to the correlative design standard of steel structures, and on the basis of the numerical analytical results by the finite element methods, the calculation formulas of the stability bearing capacity are presented for beam-column members of the large diameter thin-walled tubes. Three tests of thin-walled steel tube beam-columns were reported. Test results for deformations and ultimate strength are found to be in a good agreement with the corresponding values predicted by the calculation formulas, and the proposed methods can be used in design practice.

Abstract:International Journal of Structural Stability and Dynamics, Ahead of Print. Given the increasing use of high-strength steels in building constructions, the stability design of high-strength steel beams has become a crucial consideration. However, the current standards of various countries are based on analyses and fittings derived from conventional steel, rendering them unsuitable for high-strength steel. Moreover, existing research indicates that these standards underestimate the ultimate load-bearing capacity of high-strength steel beams. A finite element model was established to investigate lateral torsional buckling in high-strength steel beams. The obtained results were then compared with test results from experiments conducted on Q460GJ and Q690 steel beams. The reliability and accuracy of the established finite element model were validated. Through parametric studies, the impact of depth-to-width ratio, boundary condition, and steel grade on the stability coefficient was evaluated. It was observed that at the same non-dimensional slenderness, an increase in the depth-to-width ratio or a reduction in support constraints led to a decrease in the stability coefficient. It should be noted that the steel grade had little effect on the stability coefficient. Comparisons with the current steel structure design codes, such as EN1993-1-1, GB50017-2017, JGJ/T483-2020, and ANSI/AISC360-22 revealed an underestimation of the stability coefficient for clamped high-strength steel beams under uniformly distributed loads. Based on finite element simulations, stability coefficients for high-strength Q460, Q690, and Q960 clamped beams were determined. Similar to the stability coefficient proposed in GB50017-2017 for the lateral buckling stability design of steel beams, a lateral buckling stability coefficient for high-strength steel clamped beams subjected to uniformly distributed loads was proposed.
