Abstract:Background: The design of a highly active catalyst is a key point in olefins epoxidation. Recently, polyoxometalates have received an increasing interest in selective oxidation of organic compounds. Their scope as nanoparticle carriers is of immense importance as the high anionic charge associated with them prevents sintering of the nanoparticles which is a major issue related to nanoparticle based catalysts thus increasing the stability of the catalyst. Objective: We have immobilized Na9PMo11O (39)(PMo11) and gold nanoparticles on chloropropyltriethoxysilane functionalized SBA-15 mesoporous material. We investigated the molecular oxygen activation ability and stability of this heterogeneous hybrid catalytic system for green epoxidation of cyclohexene under mild reaction conditions. Method: PMo11 was prepared according to the literature, while PMo11/CPTES-SBA-15, Au/CPTES-SBA-15 and Au/PMo 11/CPTES-SBA-15 were prepared by wet deposition method. The catalytic performance was evaluated in a PTFE lined autoclave and analysis was done by gas chromatography. Results: Cyclohexene epoxidation was carried out on different heterogeneous catalytic systems which included polyoxometalate and CPTES-SBA-15 support, nano gold and CPTES-SBA-15 support and the hybrid material Au/PMo11/CPTES-SBA-15 with varying amounts of doped nanogold. All the samples showed good conversion of cyclohexene and significant selectivity for oxidized products with molecular oxygen as an oxidant under mild conditions. 1 % Au/PMo11/CPTES-SBA-15 delivered 48.1 % conversion and 35.9 % selectivity to epoxide. Conclusion: The CPTES-SBA-15 supported Au/PMo11 hybrid catalytic system demonstrated relatively high catalytic activity and selectivity for the green epoxidation of cyclohexene with molecular oxygen as an oxidant under mild reaction conditions. The hybrid catalyst was regenerated and reused for three cycles without compromising the catalytic performance.

Abstract:Active transition metal species (Co, Cu, Cr, Ni or Mn) supported on a chemically modified silica gel are used as heterogeneous catalysts in a range of Liquid phase oxidation reactions: alkyl aromatic side chain oxidations, epoxidations of alkenes and Baeyer-Villiger oxidations of linear ketones to esters and cyclic ketones to lactones. The catalyst employs metal centres bound to the silica surface via a hydrophobic spacer chain and is thus chemically robust and has a relatively high loading for a supported reagent (c 0.4mmolg(-1)). The Cr version of the catalyst promotes the oxidation of ethylbenzene to acetophenone in a solvent-free system at a rate of 5.5% h(-1) (>370 turnover h(-1)). It is also active for the oxidation of p-chlorotoluene and p-xylene to p-chlorobenzoic acid and p-toluic acid respectively. Cyclohexene is converted to its oxide at room temperature at a rate of c 28% h(-1) (c 12 turnover h(-1)) using either the Ni or Cu versions of the catalyst. The room temperature Baeyer-Villiger oxidation of cyclohexanone is achieved at a rate of 44% h(-1) (49 turnover h(-1)) using the Ni-containing catalyst. The same material also promotes the Baeyer-Villiger oxidation of linear aliphatic ketones and aromatic side chains. All the above systems use either air or molecular oxygen as the oxidant rather than peroxides or peracids. (C) 1999 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract:The late transition metal catalyst 2,6-bis[1-(2,6-diisopropylphenylimino)ethyllpyridine iron(II) chloride was supported on silica. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electronic micrograph and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements were utilized to examine the process of supporting catalyst on silica and investigate the possible mechanism of support. Furthermore, ethylene polymerizations with the supported catalysts were carried out in various conditions such as different reaction temperatures and Al/Fe molar ratios. The results showed that MAO first reacted with the hydroxyl of silica forming Si-O-Al bonds and then the catalyst was bridged through MAO on the surface of silica. Compared with homogeneous catalysts, the supported catalysts show some decrease in catalyst activity. However, they can show good activity at a lower Al/Fe molar ratio with MAO as co-catalyst and give rise to higher molecular weight and melting temperature of the polymer. Better morphology of polyethylene was obtained by a supported catalyst than by its corresponding homogeneous catalyst. (C), 2002 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract:Silica (SiO2) has been widely used as a support for various heterogeneous catalysts because of its Earth abundance, low cost, and large specific surface area. Except for the families of mesoporous and microporous silica, ordinary silica has long been perceived as just an inert support for better dispersion and mechanistic studies. However, recent advances have demonstrated new functionalities of structurally engineered silica to directly maneuver the catalytic performance, of which researchers are largely unaware. In this review, we start with a brief discussion about the fundamental merits of silica. Subsequently, we discuss distinctive features of silica through ingenious designs, which could enhance the activity, stability, and selectivity of heterogeneous catalysts. Finally, we put forward prospects and challenges for designing innovative silica-based catalysts, providing insights into viable techniques for high-performance heterogeneous catalysis.

Abstract:Active solid oxidation catalysts can be obtained by incorporating dioxomolybdenum(VI) species derived from MoO2Cl2(OPMePh2)2 into silica matrices via a sol–gel method, and can catalyze epoxidation. The supported catalyst has been characterized by elemental analysis, XRD, N2-physisorption, FT-IR, FT-Raman, UV–vis and solid-state MAS NMR spectroscopies, and a pathway for the reaction between MoO2Cl2(OPMePh2)2 and tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) is suggested.

Abstract:Although Au catalysts can be readily prepared on titania via the deposition-precipitation (DP) method, the direct application of the method similar to the preparation of silica-supported Au catalysts only results in diminished success. This paper reports a novel, efficient method to synthesize highly active Au catalysts supported on mesoporous silica (SBA-15) through a gold cationic complex precursor [Au(en)(2)](3+) (en = ethylenediamine) via a wet chemical process. The gold cationic precursor was immobilized on negatively charged surfaces of silica by a unique DP method that makes use of the deprotonation reaction of ethylenediamine ligands. The resulting mesoporous catalyst has been demonstrated to be highly active for CO oxidation at room temperature and even below 273 K, the activity of which is much superior to that of silica-supported Au catalysts previously prepared by various solution techniques. The pH value of the gold precursor solution plays a key role in determining the catalytic activity through the regulation of [Au(en)(2)](3+) deprotonation reaction and the surface interaction of silica with the gold precursor. This mesoporous gold silica catalyst has also been shown to be highly resistant to sintering because of the stabilization of Au nanoparticles inside mesopores.

Abstract:A novel interfacial hybrid epoxidation catalyst was designed with a new immobilization method for homogeneous catalysts by coating an inorganic support with an organic polymer film containing active sites. ne titanium silsesquioxane (TiPOSS) complex, which contains a single-site titanium active center, was immobilized successfully by in-situ copolymerization on a mesoporous SBA-15-supported polystyrene polymer. The resulting hybrid materials exhibit attractive textural properties (highly ordered mesostructure, large specific surface area (> 380 m(2)g(-1)) and pore volume (-0.46 cm(3) g(-1))), and high activity in the epoxidation of alkenes. In the epoxidation of cyclooctene with tert-butyl hydrogen peroxide (TBHP), the hybrid catalysts have rate constants comparable with that of their homogeneous counterpart, and can be recycled at least seven times. They can also catalyze the epoxidation of cyclooctene with aqueous H2O2 as the oxidant. In two-phase reaction media, the catalysts show much higher activity than their homogeneous counterpart due to the hydrophobic environment around the active centers. They behave as interfacial catalysts due to their multifunctionality, that is, the hydrophobicity of polystyrene and the polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS), and the hydrophilicity of the silica and the mesoporous structure. Combination of the immobilization of homogeneous catalysts on two conventional supports, inorganic solid and organic polymer, is demonstrated to achieve novel heterogeneous catalytic ensembles with the merits of attractive textural properties, tunable surface properties, and optimized environments around the active sites.
Optimizing Silica Synthesis for the Preparation of Mesoporous Ti-SBA-15 Epoxidation Catalysts

Abstract:The influence of the synthesis conditions of SBA-15 silica support in the development of Ti-SBA-15 epoxidation catalysts has been studied in detail. In this study, efficient and stable Ti-SBA-15 epoxidation catalysts were prepared using a recently developed postgrafting method based on the insertion of a chelated titanium alkoxide precursor inside the SBA-15 silica mesophase. First, the nature of the SBA-15 supports was analyzed as a function of different synthesis parameters, such as hydrothermal aging temperature and calcination temperature, by solid-state NMR spectroscopy, thermal analysis, and nitrogen physisorption at −196 °C. Subsequently, titanium-substituted SBA-15 materials were characterized by DR UV−vis spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and nitrogen physisorption. As a catalytic test reaction, the activity, selectivity, and catalyst regenerability were studied in the epoxidation of cyclohexene. Our findings show that the density of silanol groups on the support greatly influences the retention and coordination number of the grafted titanium species. This characteristic of the mesoporous silica supports also has an influence on the catalytic activity of the resulting titanosilicate materials. The conversion of cyclohexene obtained with Ti-SBA-15 catalysts synthesized using noncalcined mesoporous silica was found to increase with the hydrothermal aging temperature of the support. Furthermore, the results showed that higher conversions of cyclohexene were obtained with catalysts prepared using SBA-15 calcined at 550 °C prior to the Ti grafting step, although lower dispersion of the titanium species was usually observed for these materials. A higher accessibility of the substrates to the active sites on the surface of these materials can explain these results. However, a dramatic deactivation of the catalysts was observed upon recycling of these active materials. In contrast, the grafted catalysts prepared using uncalcined mesoporous silica supports showed a substantially lower catalytic deactivation upon different reaction cycles as compared to those grafted after calcination.

Abstract:Based on an entropy-driven principle, new macroporous helical silica rods were synthesized by using mild templates in sol–gel, then functionalized for immobilizing Co-salen complexes to catalyze enantioselective hydrolytic kinetic resolution of epoxides. Characterization revealed both silica supports and heterogeneous Co-salen complexes were macroporous helical materials with affirmative chirality. Catalysis revealed enantioselective adsorption of substrate on silica supports dominated major configuration of resolution products rather than configuration of Co-salen. The (S)-amino alcohol-doped silica and Co-(R,R)salen comprised the most enantioselective combination, which proved chiral synergy between support and Co-salen did exist. This work would contribute to the design of new support materials for asymmetric catalysis.

Abstract:A silica supported cobalt (II) Salen complex catalyst has been successfully employed in the aerobic oxidation of alkyl aromatics at atmospheric pressure in the presence of N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI). The reaction is particularly selective for the oxidation of the benzylic CH2 group and the major product obtained was ketone. The immobilized catalyst can be easily recovered and reused for at least four reaction cycles without any significant loss of its catalytic activity.

Abstract:A series of aminosilylated mesoporous silica (SBA-15) samples with different contents of (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES), synthesized using a simple one-pot method, were used as hosts for immobilization of Keggin-type 12-phosphotungstic acid (H3PW12O40). The loading of H3PW12O40 increased with increasing content of grafted APTES. The obtained materials were calcined at different temperatures, and the tungsten species were highly dispersed inside the SBA-15 channels. The catalytic activities of these samples were tested in heterogeneous oxidation of cyclohexene using H2O2. as the oxidant. The effects of different loadings and treatment temperatures on the activities of the catalysts were also investigated. Abstract:A general catalytic and relatively environment friendly method for β-epoxidation of Δ5-steroids has been developed, which uses silica supported cobalt as catalysts and molecular oxygen as the oxidant. The reactions are regio- and stereoselective.A whole range of Δ5-steroids, with different functional groups such as hydroxyl, carbonyl or acetyl, as well as different side chains, were conveniently converted to the corresponding biologically interesting 5β,6β-epoxides with high degree of stereoselectivity and high yields.

Abstract:Two modified Jacobsen-type catalysts were anchored onto an amine functionalised hexagonal mesoporous silica (HMS) using two distinct anchoring procedures: (i) one was anchored directly through the carboxylic acid functionalised diimine bridge fragment of the complex (CAT1) and (ii) the other through the hydroxyl group on the aldehyde fragment of the complex (CAT2), mediated by cyanuric chloride. The new heterogeneous catalyst, as well as the precedent materials, were characterised by elemental analyses, DRIFT, UV-vis, porosimetry and XPS which showed that the complexes were successfully anchored onto the hexagonal mesoporous silica. These materials acted as active heterogeneous catalysts in the epoxidation of styrene, using m-CPBA as oxidant, and a-methylstyrene, using NaOCl as oxidant. Under the latter conditions they acted also as enantioselective heterogeneous catalysts. Furthermore, when compared to the reaction run in homogeneous phase under similar experimental conditions, an increase in asymmetric induction was observed for the heterogenised CAT1x, while the opposite effect was observed for the heterogenised CAT2, despite of CAT2 being more enantioselective than CAT1 in homogeneous phase. These results indicate that the covalent attachment of the Jacobsen catalyst through the diimine bridge leads to improved enantiomeric excess (%ee), whereas covalent attachment through one of the aldehyde fragments results in a negative effect in the %ee. Using alpha-methylstyrene and NaOCl as oxidant, heterogeneous catalyst reuse led to no significant loss of catalytic activity and enantioselectivity. (c) 2005 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Two kinds of titanium-containing silicates were prepared by doping of titanium salt and chiral additive in a sol-gel process, which were further modified by chiral sulfonyl chloride in order for catalytic asymmetric epoxidation of alkenes. These titanium-containing materials had good porosities, ordered pore size distributions, high titanium incorporation yields, ordered morphologies, as well as internal chiral configurations. Particularly, they contained a lot of titanium dioxide particles according to TEM. In catalysis, the titanium silicates showed good conversion of alkenes, satisfactory yields and e.e. values of epoxides. The chiral inducing synergy appeared between silicate matrix and attached ligand, which was significant for transformations of styrene and α-methylstyrene. Moreover, iodosylbenzene, tert- butyl hydroperoxide and hydrogen peroxide were all promising oxidants. In addition, the present titanium catalysts showed satisfactory recycling behaviors and chemical stabilities. This work would contribute to the design of efficient chiral catalysts.

Abstract:Mono- and bimetallic heterogeneous catalysts with mesoporous structure were prepared in two steps. In the first step, SBA-15 and amino-SBA-15 supports were prepared, and in the second, these materials were impregnated with Pt and Co precursors. High-surface-area supports like SBA-15 afford highly dispersed metal oxide species which are the key parameter in the rather difficult oxidation of alkenes with hydrogen peroxide. The obtained mesoporous catalysts with 0.1% Pt and 1% Co were characterized by nitrogen adsorption, ultraviolet–visible, Fourier-transform infrared, and X-ray absorption spectroscopies. X-ray absorption spectroscopy demonstrated the presence of Pt–oxygen for both Pt–SBA-15 and Pt–amino-SBA-15 samples, suggesting a higher number of oxidized platinum species in the second material. The adopted procedure was simple, green, and efficient for 3-butene-1-ol, cis-2-butene-1, 4-diol, and cyclohexene oxidation. The use of H2O2, a clean oxidant, is an important feature of a green chemical reaction since it produces only water as the by-product. The mesoporous structure of the silica-supported catalysts enables better accessibility of active sites to bulky substrate molecules, reflected in the high conversions and enhanced selectivity.
