Abstract:Background: The design of a highly active catalyst is a key point in olefins epoxidation. Recently, polyoxometalates have received an increasing interest in selective oxidation of organic compounds. Their scope as nanoparticle carriers is of immense importance as the high anionic charge associated with them prevents sintering of the nanoparticles which is a major issue related to nanoparticle based catalysts thus increasing the stability of the catalyst. Objective: We have immobilized Na9PMo11O (39)(PMo11) and gold nanoparticles on chloropropyltriethoxysilane functionalized SBA-15 mesoporous material. We investigated the molecular oxygen activation ability and stability of this heterogeneous hybrid catalytic system for green epoxidation of cyclohexene under mild reaction conditions. Method: PMo11 was prepared according to the literature, while PMo11/CPTES-SBA-15, Au/CPTES-SBA-15 and Au/PMo 11/CPTES-SBA-15 were prepared by wet deposition method. The catalytic performance was evaluated in a PTFE lined autoclave and analysis was done by gas chromatography. Results: Cyclohexene epoxidation was carried out on different heterogeneous catalytic systems which included polyoxometalate and CPTES-SBA-15 support, nano gold and CPTES-SBA-15 support and the hybrid material Au/PMo11/CPTES-SBA-15 with varying amounts of doped nanogold. All the samples showed good conversion of cyclohexene and significant selectivity for oxidized products with molecular oxygen as an oxidant under mild conditions. 1 % Au/PMo11/CPTES-SBA-15 delivered 48.1 % conversion and 35.9 % selectivity to epoxide. Conclusion: The CPTES-SBA-15 supported Au/PMo11 hybrid catalytic system demonstrated relatively high catalytic activity and selectivity for the green epoxidation of cyclohexene with molecular oxygen as an oxidant under mild reaction conditions. The hybrid catalyst was regenerated and reused for three cycles without compromising the catalytic performance.

Abstract:Selective oxidation of olefins using molecular oxygen is a great challenge. This study reports two types of novel eco-friendly heterogeneous hybrid catalysts. One comprises of a lacunary Keggin-type polyoxometalate (POM) GaW11 linked to nano-sized silica using (3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane (APTES) to form GaW11-APTES@SiO2. Another catalyst is Au/GaW11 APTES@SiO2 prepared by wet deposition of nano-gold on the former one. The catalysts were characterized and used for the solvent-free oxidation of cyclohexene with molecular oxygen under mild reaction conditions. Both the catalysts showed good conversion and significant selectivity towards oxidized products for cyclohexene. GaW11-APTES@SiO2 showed a high conversion of up to 62.02% with a selectivity of 59.13% towards epoxide at a mild temperature of 50 degrees C. Au/GaW11-APTES@SiO2 showed a conversion of 69.32% with 57.34% selectivity to 2-cyclohexene-1-ol at a temperature of 80 degrees C. The heterogeneous catalysts were reused several times with no significant loss in conversion or selectivity towards the oxidized products.

Abstract:Spherical and well-dispersed silica/poly[styrene-co-(acrylic acid)] (SiO2/PSA) core-shell particles have been synthesized using an improved phase-inversion process. The resulting particles were successfully used as supports for polyolefin catalysts in the production of polyethylene with broadmolecular weight distribution. Through the vapor phase, instead of the liquid phase in the traditional process, a non-solvent was introduced into a mixture of micrometer-sized SiO2 and PSA solution. The core-shell structure of the resulting SiO2/PSA microspheres was confirmed using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transfer infrared spectrometry, thermogravimetric analysis and measurement of nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms. In order to avoid agglomeration of particles and to obtain a good dispersion of the SiO2/PSA core-shell microspheres, the non-solvent was added slowly. As the concentration of PSA solution increased, the surface morphology of the core-shell particles became looser and more irregular. However, the surface area and the pore volume remained the same under varying PSA concentrations. The SiO2/PSA core-shell microspheres obtained were used as a catalyst carrier system in which the core supported (n-BuCp)(2)ZrCl2 and the shell supported TiCl4. Ethylene/1-hexene copolymerization results indicated that the zirconocene and titanium-based Ziegler-Natta catalysts were compatible in the hybrid catalyst, showing high activities. Abstract:An iminopyridine cobalt dichloride complex was synthesized and demonstrated as an effective precatalyst for hydrosilylation/cyclization of 1,6-enynes with silanes. Various functional groups such as amine, free aniline, ester, ether, cyano, halide, trifluoromethyl, and heterocycle were tolerated to afford a variety of silicon-containing compounds. The reaction could be scaled up to afford products on the gram scale which could undergo further derivatizations. A primary mechanism was proposed based on analysis of side products and a deuterated experiment.

Abstract:Dihydropyrimidinones (DHPM's) have been prepared by one-pot condensation of aldehydes, urea and 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds in presence of covalently anchored nickel complex on silica as catalyst in microwave under solvent-free conditions. The prepared catalyst was characterized by elemental analysis, BET surface area, atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS), FT-IR spectroscopy and 13C CPMAS spectral studies. This method in comparison to previously reported methods offers high yields, eliminates the use of organic solvents, reduces reaction time from several hours to few minutes and also the catalyst can be reused without appreciable loss in catalytic activity.

Abstract:Multifunctional hybrid silica nanoparticles with a fluorescent core and tunable organic or polymeric shell can easily be prepared by a sol-gel process followed by 1,3 dipolar cycloaddition (CuAAC) in the same reverse quaternary W/O microemulsion. Compared to a classical multistep process, this one-pot synthesis reduces greatly the number of purification steps and avoids aggregation phenomena. The confinement of reactants inside the micellar system gives rise to a noticeable increase of the CuAAC reaction rate. In addition, using simultaneously two different substrates for CuAAC on silica allows us to obtain directly multifunctional hybrid nanoparticles displaying a double grafting without any separation or purification steps except the final recovery by centrifugation, which opens the door to a tunable coating of the nanoparticles. Particularly, the hydrophilic-lipophilic balance of the coating can be adjusted by implementing the pertinent MPEG:dodecyl azide ratio. As an application, the great versatility of this strategy has been proved by the one-pot synthesis of fluorescent silica nanoparticles with a PEG coating and encapsulating silver clusters.

Abstract:Substrate-directed enantioselective olefin epoxidation was limited to a few types of directing groups and relatively low catalyst activities. Herein, an expeditious asymmetric epoxidation protocol is reported for allylic amides and sulfonamides using a hafnium-BINAM-salen catalyst with high enantioselectivity and turnover frequency. Aryl carboxamides of allylic amines with a trisubstituted olefin motif were suitable substrates. Sequential intramolecular ring-opening in a one-pot reactor furnished highly enantiopure oxazoline alcohols. Crystallographic studies suggested the catalyst possessed a mononuclear cis-alpha configuration. Computational studies of the transition state indicated that this conversion underwent a substrate-directed pathway.

Abstract:A series of reusable, recoverable, diamine-bridged dimeric manganesesalen complexes were prepared by the encapsulation of homogeneous dimeric Mn(salen) complexes into nanocages of a 3D periodic mesoporous organosilica (PMO) support followed by silylation of the support with organosilane. The composition, structure, morphology, and textural properties of the prepared PMO-entrapped dimeric Mn(salen) complexes were characterized, and their catalytic performances were tested in the epoxidation of alkenes (styrene, cyclohexene, and 1-phenylcyclohexene), with NaClO as an oxygen source and 4-phenylpyridine-N-oxide as an axial ligand. Furthermore, the influences of the textural and morphological properties of the entrapped dimeric Mn(salen) complexes and the key reaction parameters on the catalytic activity and selectivity are discussed. Finally, the reusability of the supported dimeric Mn(salen) complexes was evaluated over three catalytic runs.

Abstract:Salen ligand prepared from 1,2-phenylenediamine and 2-hydroxy-3(3-triethoxysilyl-propyl)-benzaldehyde has been used as cobalt-chelate for the immobilization of the catalytic site by a one-pot synthesis method. Sol–gel hydrolysis and polycondensation of this chelate with 10 equivalents of tetraethyl orthosilicate produced the heterogeneous catalyst. This catalyst is active in selective molecular oxygen oxidations of cyclohexane, cyclohexene, toluene, styrene and anthracene in the presence of butyraldehyde at room temperature.

Abstract:A couple of robust and reusable diamine-bridged dimeric Mn(salen) complexes were prepared by the encapsulation of homogeneous dimeric Mn(salen) complexes into nanocages of three-dimensionally (3D) periodic mesoporous organosilica (PMO) support followed by the silylation of the support with organosilane. The materials exhibited 3D periodic mesostructure with body-centered Im3m symmetry, and the confined Mn(salen) complexes maintained their original structure. As-prepared heterogeneous dimeric Mn(salen) complexes were successfully applied in the epoxidation of three alkenes (i.e. styrene, cyclohexene, and 1-phenylcyclohexene) by using NaClO as the oxygen donor and CH2Cl2 as a solvent, and the reusability of the materials was evaluated through three times' catalytic runs.

Abstract:A Jacobsen-type catalyst was anchored onto an amine functionalised hexagonal mesoporous silica (HMS) through the diimine bridge fragment of the complex. The new heterogeneous catalyst, as well as the precedent materials, were characterised by elemental analyses, FTIR-DRIFT, UV-vis, porosimetry and XPS which showed that the complex was successfully anchored. This material was active in the epoxidation of styrene and alpha-methylstyrene in dichloromethane at 0 degrees C using, respectively, m-CPBA/NMO and NaOCI. With the former substrate no asymmetric induction was found in the epoxide, whereas with the latter substrate higher %ee was found than in homogeneous phase. Using the latter experimental conditions, catalyst reuse led to no significant loss of catalytic activity and enantioselectivity.

Abstract:In this work, Cu(II), Co(II) and Ni(II) complexes of the Schiff base ((S,E)-2-(3,4-dimethoxybenzylideneamino)-3-(1H-imidazol-4-yl)propionic acid) were synthesized and subsequently anchored onto amine functionalized silica. They were characterized by FT-IR, UV–vis., 29Si NMR, TG-DTG, ESR, FE-SEM and AFM techniques, and employed as catalysts in cyclohexane oxidation using hydrogen peroxide oxidant. Silica supported Cu(II) catalyst was shown the highest catalytic activity (70%) than rest of the catalysts used. On the other hand, all the complexes were selective as they yield only cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone. Silica supported catalysts were maintained their catalytic activity over five successive catalytic run. As these catalysts are selective, reusable and functioning well with hydrogen peroxide, they could design the environment friendly catalytic system for effective cyclohexane oxidation.

Direct Synthesis of Bifunctionalized Hexagonal Mesoporous Silicas and Its Catalytic Performance for Aerobic Oxidation of Cyclohexane

Abstract:According to the characteristics of the cyclohexane oxidation reaction a series of bifunctionalized hexagonal mesoporous silicas, CoPh-HMS, were designed and successfully synthesized by a one-step co-condensation route. The results of small-angle XRD, TEM, and N-2 adsorption-desorption measurements showed that the resultant materials had well-ordered mesoscopic structures. Co2+ ions were incorporated into the frameworks in tetrahedral coordination along with phenyl groups immobilized on the surface, confirmed by a careful spectroscopic (FT-IR, UV-visible, and Si-29 MAS NMR) study. The surfaces of the materials were proved to be more hydrophobic with higher Ph loading, and the largest water droplet contact angle is tip to 110.50 degrees. These materials were applied in the liquid-phase oxidation of cyclohexane with molecular oxygen as oxidant and tert-butyl hydroperoxide as initiator Linder solvent-free conditions. High activity could be obtained with these bifunctionalized catalysts being used. The modification effect of phenyl groups played an important role in the activity enhancement.

Abstract:A new method, which combines the swelling of preformed porous polymer particles in silica precursor and sol–gel procedure at the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), is used to prepare spherical, highly porous silica particles and polymer-silica composites. As a by-product, MCM-41 silica is formed. The resulting products are the effect of two simultaneous and competing processes: the swelling of polymer in silica precursor tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and the adsorption of CTAB on polymer with simultaneous desorption of TEOS. The paper presents the formation mechanism of final silica particles as well as the structural properties of composites and silicas derived from them. All materials are characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy, (TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), nitrogen adsorption and X-ray diffraction (XRD). This study is supplemented by the Naproxen desorption measurements for the selected composites and silicas.

Abstract:A series of aminosilylated mesoporous silica (SBA-15) samples with different contents of (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES), synthesized using a simple one-pot method, were used as hosts for immobilization of Keggin-type 12-phosphotungstic acid (H3PW12O40). The loading of H3PW12O40 increased with increasing content of grafted APTES. The obtained materials were calcined at different temperatures, and the tungsten species were highly dispersed inside the SBA-15 channels. The catalytic activities of these samples were tested in heterogeneous oxidation of cyclohexene using H2O2. as the oxidant. The effects of different loadings and treatment temperatures on the activities of the catalysts were also investigated. Abstract:A practically applicable strategy is developed to rationally immobilize easily accessed and highly dispersed redox-active metal oxides into porous metal silica (PMS) materials templated and functionalized by porous metal-ligand moieties. On the basis of this strategy, the highly active porous catalyst PMS-1 is successfully targeted for aerobic oxidation of cyclohexane with conversion up to 14.6%, which is much superior to the current industrially adopted catalysts (less than 4% cyclohexane conversion) that use harsh conditions. This promising approach to explore highly active heterogeneous catalysts for inert C-H bond activation should lead to the further discovery of numerous industrially useful catalysts for the oxidation of inert hydrocarbon raw materials.
