Abstract:Growth of MCM-22 zeolite films on glass substrates was studied with the focus on the understanding of the unusual vertical crystal orientation. The films formed were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Separate thin disk-like MCM-22 crystals were found vertically oriented at the early crystallization stage. With crystallization the crystals grew into thick disks and finally into continuous films. The vertically oriented MCM-22 thin crystals could be developed from the orientation of columnar MCM-22 nuclei, which have larger parameters in their c-directions than those in a and b directions. The preferred orientation of MCM-22 nuclei and the fast growth rate in the layer direction are responsible for the vertical growth of MCM-22 zeolite films.

Abstract:Mordenite and ZSM-5 seeds could grow on the surface of an asymmetric α-Al2O3 support using an identical organic-free aluminosilicate solution under the same hydrothermal conditions. It suggests that the phase of zeolite can be controlled by varying the type of seed. Continuous mordenite and ZSM-5 membranes were prepared by the secondary growth method using corresponding seeds under appropriate conditions. The water content in the secondary growth mixture strongly influenced the growth of zeolite crystals. ZSM-5 seeds grew at a smaller rate and showed a habit of thin hexagonal plate in a concentrated mixture, while the crystals with a habit of rectangular parallelepiped were formed from a diluted secondary growth mixture. ZSM-5 crystals had poor intergrowth in the former case, whereas the crystals were highly intergrown in the latter case. ZSM-5 crystals in either membrane have a random orientation. In contrast to ZSM-5 zeolite, the crystal orientation in the secondary grown mordenite membranes strongly depended on the water content in the secondary growth mixture. The crystals in the mordenite membrane developed in a diluted secondary growth mixture were oriented with the (150) face parallel to the support surface, whereas the crystals in the membrane grown in a concentrated mixture were oriented with the (002) face parallel to the support surface. These results suggest that the crystal orientation in mordenite membranes can be manipulated only by changing the water content in a secondary growth mixture. The formation of the preferred crystal orientation in the secondary grown mordenite membrane is discussed in terms of an “evolutionary selection” process.

Abstract:Continuous b-oriented zeolite MFI monolayer films (<0.4 pm thick) were prepared by in situ crystallization on metal substrates (stainless steel and aluminum alloy) using a synthesis solution 0.32TPAOH:TEOS:165H(2)O (TPAOH: tetra-propylammonium hydroxide, TEOS: tetraethylorthosilicate). Effects of crystallization temperature and time, surface roughness, position and chemical nature of the substrate, and aging time of the synthesis solution were investigated and a mechanism for the b-oriented monolayer thin film formation was discussed. The supported films were characterized with scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Polishing of the film with a normal lab polisher leads to a continuous ultrathin zeolite film with a surface roughness less than 0.05 mum. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The achievement of compact and defect-free film structure is crucial for the application of b-oriented MFI zeolite film. In this work, a novel heat treatment technique was used to treat zeolite seeded substrates prior to secondary growth. The influence of the heat treatment parameters such as treat temperature and time on the final film morphology were systematically investigated. The relationship between film compactness and the parameters was established. Under the optimized treat temperature of 120 degrees C and treat time of 1 h, compact and uniform b-oriented MFI zeolite film was achieved. The applicability of the optimum heat treatment condition was validated by employing various film substrates.

Abstract:A preferentially oriented mordenite membrane was successfully prepared on a seeded porous α-alumina support. Characterization results of XRD (X-ray diffractometer) and FE-SEM (field emission scanning electron microscope) revealed that evolutionary selection might predominantly contribute to the formation of the sharply oriented mordenite membrane. The necessary conditions under which evolutionary selection occurs are: (a) the number density of nuclei on the support surface should be high enough at the early stage; (b) the crystals should grow fastest along one direction; and (c) the zeolite layer should proceed via the successive growth of the crystals nucleated on the support surface instead of the accumulation of the crystals formed in the bulk solution.

Abstract:A facile secondary growth method for fabrication of highly b-oriented MFI zeolite films is demonstrated. This method enables the growth of b-oriented MFI seed monolayers into highly b-oriented dense films in the TEOS-TPAOH-H2O system without any additive or extra treatment. Suppression of twin growth is achieved via the increase of water content in the synthesis solution. A clear correlation between the film orientation and the synthesis composition for secondary growth is presented. Compared with previously reported strategies in controlling the orientation of MFI zeolite films, this method offers greater operating window of the synthesis composition (H2O/Si = 1500-3000, TPA(+)/Si = 0.1-0.5, OH-/Si = 0.1-0.2) and synthesis condition (150-180 degrees C, 4-8 h). The thickness of b-oriented MFI films (370 nm-610 nm) can be tuned by adjusting the water amount or the synthesis condition. The new synthesis method uses lower amount of organic template and silica source making it potentially more economical and environmentally friendly and thus attractive for industrial implementation. Abstract:Up to date, zeolite films have been mainly fabricated by in situ crystallization, secondary growth in a solution/hydrogel, or occasionally by vapor phase transformation of dry gel. Here we demonstrate for the first time a solvent-free secondary growth method for b-oriented silica MFI zeolite films using the synthetic powder from ground anhydrous raw solids in the presence of NH4F. Typically, precisely b-oriented MFI zeolite films are synthesized from seed layers of highly b-oriented MFI zeolite crystals in the synthetic powder of 1SiO2:0.035TPABr:0.05NH4F at 175 °C for 6 h. If needed, b-oriented MFI zeolite multilayer films can be acquired by changing the synthesis time or the amount of NH4F in the synthetic powder. Compared with the traditional hydrothermal synthesis, the approach developed here may provide a new avenue for fabricating high quality zeolite films/membranes.

Due to the formation of a strong covalent linkage between the seed layer and the substrate during heat treatment, a compact and uniform b-oriented MFI zeolite film was obtained after secondary growth. Abstract:Elimination of parasitic twin crystals on the surface of highly b-oriented MFI zeolite films remains an interesting but challenging issue. 1,2-Dihydroxybenzene (C6H6O2), as complex agent to restrict the activity of siliceous species, was introduced into the secondary hydrothermal synthesis solution. The effect of the synthesis parameters such as crystallization temperature and reaction duration on the morphology of the resulting oriented MFI zeolite films was systematically investigated. The addition of C6H6O2 suppressed the growth rate of MFI crystals in the films along both the c-axis and a-axis directions. The suppression was even more severe for the a-axis directions because of only very limited siliceous species available for the seed crystal growth as well as the relatively fast depletion of them for c-axis growth. The twin elimination effect of the C6H6O2 addition was further validated by the successful achievement of highly b-oriented MFI films on various film supports under the optimum synthesis condition.

Abstract:Growth of oriented films of epitaxial MFI overgrowths by the in situ method was studied by SEM, TEM and powder XRD. By using a short hydrothermal treatment, it was possible to grow well-defined, b-oriented ZSM-5 films on polished quartz substrates. It was found that these b-oriented precursor ZSM-5 films grew along the b-axis in an aluminum free silicalite-1 synthesis mixture. Simultaneously, 90° rotational intergrowths formed on top of the b-oriented crystals. Upon further growth in several short synthesis steps, the 90° rotational intergrowths formed an a-oriented silicalite-1 film on top of the first b-oriented film. Only very weak reflections representing other crystallographic planes than (h00) and (0k0) are observed by XRD in these samples, which shows that all crystals are a- or b-oriented. Continuous crystals, extending from the support to the top surface of the film was observed by electron microscopy.

Abstract:Continuous h-oriented MFI zeolite films were prepared on stainless steel substrates by dynamic hydrothermal synthesis using a rotating convection oven. The influences of rotation speed, crystallization temperature and crystallization time were studied. X-ray diffraction was used to identify the orientation of the zeolite films. Compared with the static method, a shorter synthesis time, a more uniform particle size distribution and better film orientation were observed for the dynamic method, and this is attributed to the low concentration and thermal gradients that exist in the bulk solution and to the washing action of the bulk solution toward the substrate surface.

Abstract:Highly (001) oriented cubic MgxZn1-xO (x 0.5) thin films were deposited on amorphous silicon dioxide substrates (SiO2/Si(100) and quartz) by low temperature epitaxy at 250℃. SEM and AFM characterizations showed that the surfaces of cubic MgxZn1-xO (x 0.5) thin films are very smooth. XRD and UV-Vis light transmission spectra of the thin films demonstrated that crystalline films grown on SiO2/Si(100) and quartz substrates present cubic structure, and highly (001) orientation dominates the diffraction curves. Interference modulation of the transmission spectra indicated that the surface of cubic MgxZn1-xO films is uniform, and transmission spectra represent that transparency of thin films is very high from ultraviolet to visible light wave band. The refractive indices of the thin films are between 1.7 and 1.8, decreasing with the increase of either the content of Mg or wavelength.

Abstract:Mesoporous silica films with 2D hexagonal p6mm structured vertical channels were simply synthesized by using both anionic and cationic gemini surfactants. Abstract:Microstructural manipulation has been proven to remarkably affect the performance of zeolite membranes/films in separation and catalysis. Accordingly, intensive research and significant progress have been achieved in the last decades on the microstructural manipulation of zeolite films/membranes. From the literature, various factors including supports, seed layer, growth methods, synthesis solution, crystallization condition, and post-treatment can result in the different microstructures of zeolite films/membranes including morphology, orientation, thickness, and composition of the dense layer. This review attempts to summarize the obtained progress in microstructural manipulation of MFI-type zeolite films/membranes and their relationship with the separation performance. Some key topics are detailed and discussed, including (1) controllable synthesis of orientated zeolite films/membranes; (2) rational design and synthesis of zeolite films/membranes with ultrathin separation layer; (3) construction of asymmetric zeolite membranes; (4) architectural design of zeolite films/membranes at the microscopic level (heteroatoms substituted zeolite films/membranes); (5) the challenges and strategies in scaling-up of zeolite film/membrane production. Concluding remarks and perspectives are also suggested in the end.

Abstract:ZSM-5 (Zeolite Socony Mobil - Type 5) is a crystalline aluminosilicate with an MFI (Mobile-type Five) framework with anisotropic distribution of pores and channels along different orientations. A secondary growth method with assistance of pre-deposited seeds has been dominantly utilized to fabricate oriented MFI films to provide the capacity and flexibility of controlling the membrane crystal orientation. Functionally, the straight channels along the b-axis favor mass transfer, while the sinusoidal channels along the a-axis are preferred for product selectivity. The orientation of MFI films affects their application performance in separation, catalytic activities, and selectivities, as well as chemical sensing. In this review, the crystallinity, nanostructure, porosity, and orientation control during the MFI film formation have been surveyed for the latest literature focusing on synthetic approaches, crystal structure designs, and parameter adjustment strategies for tailoring the MFI film structure and orientation distribution. The associated functional enablings have been reviewed and discussed including example devices for capture and separation of various gases such as CO2, hydrocarbons (HCs), value-added chemical, and fuel transformation through shape selective catalysis, as well as chemical sensing, as a result of oriented films with different structural and crystalline characteristics. Looking ahead, more research attention is expected for structural and orientational tailoring of MFI and other zeolite films, membranes, and other functional devices for future applications in gas phase sorption, separation, catalysis, sensing, and beyond.

Abstract:The fabrication of MFI zeolite films with particular b-axis orientation is especially fascinating. Unlike the conventional alkaline or hydrofluoric acid (HF) assisted neutral synthesis route, here we develop a novel neutral synthesis solution system of TPABr/fumed silica/H2O without the use of HF and successfully synthesize highly b-oriented MFI zeolite films on glass-plate substrates by secondary growth. The localized weak alkaline environment created by the dissolved Na2O species from the substrate is identified as the key factor for the depolymerization of fumed silica and subsequently the in-plane growth of zeolite seed layers. Continuous b-oriented MFI films can also be synthesized on other substrates in the presence of a glass plate or a trace amount of NaOH, which making our neutral synthesis route promising for the direct synthesis of MFI zeolite films and membranes on various substrates.

Abstract:A systematic study was carried out on the synthesis of oriented continuous zeolite MFI thin films on stainless steel substrate by direct in-situ crystallization, and clear correlation was obtained between crystal orientation in the zeolite film and the composition of the synthesis solution. Within the synthesis system of TPAOH:NaOH:TEOS:H2O:NaCl, OH-/ Si and Na+/TPA(+) ratios play a critical role in controlling crystal orientation. For sodium-free or low sodium syntheses, only random-oriented films are formed at OH-/Si greater than or equal to 0.64, (a, b)-oriented films at 0.64 > OH-/Si > 0.5 or at 0.2 greater than or equal to OH-/Si > 0.1, and b-oriented films at 0.5 greater than or equal to OH-/Si > 0.2. For a given OH-/Si ratio, addition of Na+ leads to change of crystal orientation from b-oriented, to (a, b)-oriented, to (a, b, c)-oriented, and eventually to random-oriented.
