Abstract:Sulphur K edge spectroscopy was used to differentiate types of sulphur present in petroleum asphaltenes and kerogens. A simplified model of the near edge structure enabled quantification of the different sulphur forms. The evolution of the sulphur edge following pyrolysis of kerogens confirms that thiophenic sulphur is more stable than organic sulphide forms. Pyrite retained in the kerogens may partially transform to iron sulphate during air storage. During pyrolysis FeS2 is regenerated and subsequently converted to FeS, contributing to the release of H2S. The results show that exchange between organic and mineral forms of sulphur is limited.

Abstract:In Ref. 1 we reported on a numerical study of the influence of disorder on the spin Hall conductivity of the k-linear Rashba model, concluding incorrectly that it remains finite in the thermodynamic limit. Our original conclusion is at odds with new numerical findings2 in which the extrapolation to infinite system size is carried out systematically. The new numerical results are consistent with the conclusion from perturbation theory calculations that the dc spin Hall conductivity of this model is zero.3,4 These numerical studies are complicated by strong frequency dependence and large fluctuations in the spin Hall conductivity values obtained in finite-size calculations. The earlier calculations erred by using the frequency dependence of the longitudinal conductivity, which has corrections that vary as 2 compared to the 1 dependence of the spin Hall conductivity discussed below, to judge whether or not the dc limit was reached. The new findings in Ref. 2 supersede the conclusions reached in Ref. 1 with regards to the thermodynamic dc limit of the k-linear Rashba model. The findings in Ref. 2 resolve the controversy that had been associated with the linear Rashba model. The expression used for numerical evaluation of the spin Hall conductivity is

Abstract:The original version of this Article contained errors in the second sentence in the legend of Fig. 1, which incorrectly read 'These two elastic insulators are identical in lattice constant a (3a0), plate thickness (0.4a0), and radius of perforated holes r (0.18a0) but different hole-center distance characterized by b.' The correct version states 'plate thickness (√3 × 0.4a0)' in place of 'plate thickness (0.4a0)' and 'radius of perforated holes r (√3 × 0.18a0)' rather than 'radius of perforated holes r (0.18a0)'.The first sentence of the 'Sample preparation' section of the Methods originally incorrectly read 'Our samples are prepared exclusively on polished stainless-steel plates (Type 201, mass density 7803 kg m-3) with a fixed plate thickness 7.82 mm.' In the corrected version, 'mass density 7903 kg m-3' replaces 'mass density 7803 kg m-3'.The second sentence in the legend of Supplementary Fig. 3, originally incorrectly read 'The symmetry of the phononic crystal remains unchanged as C6ν, and thickness of the substrates H (equals to 0.4a0), lattice constant a (equals to 3a0) and radius of perforated holes r (equals to 0.18 a0) maintain constant.'
