Abstract:Urban forest plays a crucial role in coping with global change and rapid urbanization via providing various ecosystem services. In this context, cities in Guangdong-Hongkong-Macao Greater Bay Area of China (GBA) established increasing investment in urban forest construction since 2000. However, data on the current condition of the planted forests remains scarce, which hampers a comprehensive understanding of how to improve the quality of urban forest planning and construction in the future. Therefore, we selected a core city Guangzhou, an inland city Foshan and a coastal city Zhuhai in GBA as our research objects and classified them into core urban area (CUA), semi urban area (SUA), and urban fringe area (UFA). We launched a field measurement for the tree variables regarding forest structure. Besides, ecological indexes were introduced to evaluate the condition and potential of the forests and florescence data together with tridimensional green quantity data provided different perspectives on landscape diversity and stability. The results show that Guangzhou has a well-planned forest pattern with advantages in forest structures and visible landscape values in different areas. To introduce different tree species in CUA and SUA and to plant more trees of those rare tree species in UFA can effectively increase Guangzhou's forest diversity and evenness. For Foshan, it is advisable to implement a balanced forest-investment policy by making specific recommendations for different areas, such as planting various tree species in CUA and UFA to increase forest diversity. For Zhuhai, it is distinguished for the attractiveness for tourists by the advantages in landscape diversity and stability, but it is still necessary to plant different trees with appropriate classes to enhance the urban forest stability. Overall, it is crucial for city managers to obtain precise knowledge of urban forest conditions from both the ecological and landscape perspectives, which may contribute enormously to the improvement of the quality of urban forest planning and construction in adapting to various environmental challenges.

Abstract:Urban forest is a very important part of urban ecosystems and provides significant ecosystem services. It benefits urban communities environmentally, aesthetically, recreationally and economically. This article reviews the development status, development patterns and influencing factors of urban forest in China. There are four typical development patterns of urban forest in China: the forest city, garden city, ecological economics and forest greenbelt. Social, climatic, economic and other factors influence urban forest development in China. Social factors include government behaviour, laws and regulations, science and technology, education and culture, public awareness and participation, ecological planning and management. Climatic factors include rainfall, temperature and sunlight. Economic factors include urban economic level and funding for urban forest. In future, government, NGOs and the private sector should be considered more in the planning and management of urban forest. The social, climatic and economic factors should be taken into account when improving urban forest management. Research on urban forest from the academic and the management viewpoint should be strengthened. This can improve the development and management of urban forest in China and in other developing countries.

Current Status of Evaluations on Ecological Benefits of Urban Forest:Surveying on Urban Forestry Administrative Authorities

Abstract:Scientific evaluation on ecological benefit of urban forest is the foundation of effective management of urban forest.This paper chooses urban forest management agencies as respondents,and uses the method of mailed-in questionnaires.The investigation includes urban forest coverage rate,most-concerned indexes of ecological benefits of urban forest,and progress of ecological benefits evaluation.Feedbacks from 95 cities are analyzed together with other collected statistical data to identify main factors that affecting the implementation of evaluation.The results show that evaluations on ecological benefits of urban forest in China are still at a beginning stage.The indexes including good climatic and geographical conditions,abundant natural tourism resources,and government participation in the election of environmental rewards have significant influences on the evaluation.While the socio-economic condition has less effects.Meanwhile,there is a high consistency on the concern of ecological benefits of urban forest between urban forestry administrative authorities and researchers.Recommendations are given to deal with the identified problems,and to improve the assessment of ecological benefits of urban forest.

Abstract:Based on an investigation of the urban ecological forests in Pudong Area of Shanghai in two years, the conditions of the plants' growing, overwintering, diseases and insect pest during the forepart of the renovating of the urban vegetation is recorded.The result indicated that the surviving ratio of the plants in the swatch is high during this period; Though frostbite, intentional light hurts, insect hurts, and man-made hurts were found here, Pittosporum tobira,Ligustrum lucidum, and Liquidambar formosana are growing well; while the main plant, Machilus thunbergii, are growing rapidly;the other plants in the swatch such as Cyclobalanopsis glauca are growing quite well which have reached a fifteen-percent ratio of the relative growth;So ecological greening could be taken as the main methods to build or restore the urban greening system. The purpose is to give the basic information for the further investigation, and to give some advices to popularize the ecological greening methods.

Abstract:Urban forests can alleviate the urban heat island effect, improve air quality, and improve residents' mental health. By studying urban forests, these resources can be better used and managed to create more livable urban environments. Therefore, the urban forest in the Taishan region is taken as the research object, and the ecological compensation and sustainable development of urban forest in Tai'an City are deeply analyzed by GIS. It divided the area into forest land, water bodies, wetlands, grasslands, and shrubs as the basic ecosystem types. And through secondary interpretation and combination, a complete urban forest information database was established. To evaluate the comprehensive benefits of urban forests, the analytic hierarchy process was utilized to establish a corresponding evaluation index system. Based on the assessment outcomes of the comprehensive benefits of urban forests in the area, a standard accounting method for urban forest ecological compensation was proposed. The results showed that each index of the comprehensive benefits of urban forests and the random consistency ratio were both less than 0.1. This indicated that the matrix calculation results of various indicators of urban forest comprehensive benefits had good consistency. At the target level, the comprehensive evaluation score of urban forests in the study area was 7.69. At the factor level, the weight value of the urban forest landscape structure was 0.675, and the comprehensive score was 7.62. The weight value of urban forest comprehensive benefits was 0.325, and the comprehensive score was 7.82. The quantitative weight value of urban forest greening in the study area was 0.6138, with a comprehensive score of 7.57. Based on the analysis of the issues in urban forests and ecological compensation in the research area of Tai'an City, corresponding ecological compensation strategies have been proposed. It is of great value to study the urban forest of Tai'an city, which can help to formulate more effective urban planning and sustainable development strategies. The research results can also provide a valuable reference and inspiration for the improvement of urban forest ecological environment and biodiversity protection in other areas.

Abstract:Urban forests are crucial components of the urban ecosystem, playing a pivotal role in maintaining ecological balance, mitigating the urban heat island effect, and enhancing air quality, etc.. Research into urban forest ecosystem services and multifunctionality is of significant importance for effectively managing and optimizing urban ecosystems, thus contributing to sustainable urban development. This work systematically examined various ecosystem services provided by urban forests, encompassing regulatory, supportive, provisioning, cultural, and health-promoting services. It provided a comprehensive review of research progress and paradigms regarding the multifunctionality of urban forest ecosystems, anticipates future research directions, and underscored the necessity of enhancing attention to the three-dimensional morphology of urban forests in regulating their ecological functions. Additionally, it emphasized the importance of quantitatively analyzing urban forests' contribution to ecosystem multifunctionality and optimizing urban forest patterns through multi-objective synergistic techniques. Furthermore, this study elucidated the cascading effects and mechanisms of urban forest pattern-process-function-service relationships, proposing strategies for multi-objective coordinated development of urban forest patterns and offering scientific support and practical guidance for the efficient, stable, and sustainable management of urban forests.

Abstract:Urban forest construction plays a critical role in meeting the growing demand for ecological service and improving the environmental quality in urban areas,but it is not the only choice.However,the cost effectiveness problem was often ignored in previous researches and practice.Based on the case study of Shanghai urban forests,this paper analyses the cost effectiveness of renting land for urban forest plantation,and finds out that Shanghai urban forests are faced with both the challenge of high cost and limited capability of ecological service,due to the marketization of plantation.Based on the comparison of eco-service functions between forest ecosystem and paddy fields,it's argued that paddy fields and forests have different advantages.Paddy fields work better in flood prevention and watershed protection,while being more fragile to human activities.In fact,paddy fields and river nets have been the major eco-service source of Shanghai Metropolis.Under the principle of cost effectiveness,it's pointed out that the supply of urban ecological service should not over-rely on urban forests,but focus more on the integration of different eco-elements according to local conditions,including paddy fields,river nets,and so on.More efforts should be put on the protection and restoration of paddy-field ecosystem,and the optimization of urban forests.

Abstract:As a key component of urban ecosystem,urban forests are of important ecological and social functions,while urban forests health is the prerequisite of ensuring the fulfillment of these functions and thus can directly affect the sustainable development of human society. Urban forests health is a comprehensive concept,which requires not only satisfying its own ecosystem health,but also meeting various demands of human society in economic,cultural and other terms. However,there are a number of factors that can influence urban forest health,while the main factors include the particularity of urban environment and human activities. In addition,the monitoring evaluation index screening and the evaluation methods selection for urban forest health in China are still at an infancy stage,which have not yet formed a mature system. The structural fragment of urban forest as well as the other features has seriously influenced the self-healing capacity of urban forests. In order to ensure the healthy growth of urban forests,many scholars researched on the maintenance measures from the macro and individual dimensions. The paper gave some recommendations in view of the shortcomings spotted in the research on urban forests health,on the basis of summarizing the previous research achievements.

Abstract:As human living environments face increasing challenges with resilience, the concept of nature-based solutions (NBS) was proposed in recent years as a way to promote sustainable living in urban environments. Urban forests and trees play important roles in urban ecosystems, while their potential as an NBS is promising. A bibliometric analysis was first conducted to explore the research pattern of NBS in urban environments. Studies of urban forest and tree-based green infrastructure in NBS research were further investigated using a systematic literature review method. The initial studies on NBS have increased since 2015 with 493 documents published from 142 sources in over 70 countries and regions. Keyword analysis showed green infrastructure had a rather high frequency of utility and received considerable attention. As for urban forests as nature-based solutions (UF-NBS) research, the most prominent study approaches used at different scales and the main benefits and typologies of urban forest studied in the articles were identified. UF-NBS research is still relatively scarce at present. Despite the role of urban forest and trees in addressing environmental challenges being well recognized, UF-NBS studies still need to be conducted in a more comprehensive context, taking social and economic aspects into account.

Abstract:Urban Hong Kong is covered by high building, road, and population densities. Its urban morphology is inherently not conducive to extensive or high-grade greening. Recent renewal of old areas has squeezed out some limited interstitial plantable space, although in new development areas modest spaces have been earmarked for greenery. The study aims at evaluating the major constraints to urban trees and their companion urban soil envelopes and at providing specific recommendations to improve tree management in the city. The analysis covers the above-ground confinements that dampen tree performance, the less tangible but rather difficult institutional restrictions that impose a somewhat unnecessary lid on tree planting, the multiplicity of players and stakeholders involved in urban-tree management that militates against coordination and cooperation, the widespread occupation of underground space by utility lines often to the exclusion of trees, and the extremely poor quality of urban soils that are often used without amelioration to support tree growth. The management recommendations furnish practical suggestions and hints to improve the short- and long-term welfare of trees in terms of quality, quantity, and spatial distribution. The conclusion enumerates some concrete measures for consideration by decision-makers to upgrade the city's greenery to close the gap between science and policy.

Abstract:The rapid urbanization process and high-intensity construction mode have greatly changed the underlying surface structure and spatial distribution of the natural land surface, further amplified the possibility of urban floods, and made urban security face more serious threats. Urban forest could help to mitigate urban floods through water holding and interception by its unique structures, especially the litter layer. This paper compared the ability of different forest tree species on urban floods mitigation, through analyzing their litter accumulation, litter water holding characteristics, and water interception features of different decomposed layers. The results concluded that Quercus mongolica Fisch. ex Ledeb. (QM) forest, Betula platyphylla Sukaczev (BP) forest, Larix gmelinii (Rupr.) Kuzen. (LG) forest, and Picea koraiensis Nakai (PK) forest were the best choices for improving urban floods resistance in a high-urbanization winter city, for they had larger litter mass and higher maximum water holding and interception capacity. The corresponding results of this study could help environmental management departments worldwide in the selection of tree species in urban greening projects focusing on urban flood control.
