Green Space: Critical Natural Capital of Urban Sustainable Development

Abstract:Cities are the regions which have the most intense interaction among social,economy,and environment.Along with more and more urban environmental problems,people pay more and more attentions to the urban sustainable development.Critical natural capital has especial characters such as essentiality,irreplaceability,and irreversibility,which play important roles in the sustainable developmental system.So identifying urban critical natural capital is the precondition of achieving urban sustainable development.Based on an overview of former researches,we find that urban green space has many essential ecological functions such as food supplying,wood and fiber provisioning,air purifying,noise abating,microclimate regulating,nutrient cycling,biodiversity maintaining,and some social-cultural services,which are classified into four groups(source function,sink function,life support function,human health and welfare function).The analysis of ecosystem service and characters of urban green space identifies that urban green space is an important natural capital to urban sustainable development.Finally,some operable suggestions are made to ecosystem service conservation and enhancing of green space for urban sustainable development.
