Abstract:Large-diameter cast-in-situ tubular pile (shorted as LTP) is a new, efficiency and energy saving, environmental protection pile and has been widely put into use in the foundation treatment. Using finite element method (FEM) to analyze and study the behavior of LTP is a very effective research method. This paper adopted the finite element computation software ANSYS 11.0 to conduct a 3-D numerical simulation for the LTP of a typical project. In this paper, it introduced how to realize the finite element model, specifically discussed how to select the appropriate key parameters and proposed an effective method and steps base on experience to determine the key parameters. By calculating, compared the calculated Q-S curve with the measured one and then analyzed the settlement behavior and the inner friction distribution of LTP, it is found that the inner friction only emerge at the bottom of the soil core and the upper part nearly does not have friction. The critical point in depth decreased and the maximum inner friction increased with the increasement of the load. Under the ultimate load, the sphere of influence of LTP decreased rapidly and the inner friction increased significantly.

Abstract:A thermal analysis is carried out using two-dimensional finite element method(FEM) to simulate the construction process of a massive concrete foundation of Tongbai power station in China.A new exothermal model of cement hydration in concrete considering the effects of temperature and concentration of chemical reactant is incorporated into the finite element numerical simulations.The change of temperature field during laminated pouring of massive concrete is obtained by controlling the contribution of each element to global stiffness matrix and load vector in different construction stages.Dynamic memory allocation is accomplished to improve the computation efficiency and to avoid the singularity of the global stiffness matrix.The actual temperature is also measured in the field using thermocouples installed within the foundation.The study demonstrates that the two-dimensional finite element analysis is adequate to predict the temperature distribution in the foundation.

Abstract:There are many problems, such as, stress concentration and local displacements in the strength analysis of large-scale high-press cast iron dryer. The above problems were analyzed by means of finite element method. According to the national standard, the chamfer of the side of cylinder head was adjusted and the end cover thicknesses on both sides were increased in order to optimize the design of its structure.
New Modeling Method for Finite Element Analysis of Large Oil Storage Tanks Based on Foundation Settlement

Abstract:Taking the friction between oil storage tanks and earth into consideration,this method adopts the mutual interaction caused by the touch of the bottom of the unit and structure.The foundation settlement was used as the critical boundary condition to take the place of those foundation bed coefficient and elastic modulus which are difficult to be properly calculated or measured,a finite element modeling method was established.The comparison between the actual numerical of stress testing and the numerical of stress from the arcturus welding areas has shown that the numerical of stress obtained from the method of finite element evaluation is just the same as the one from actual testing.Therefore,it can be used to properly calculate the foundation stress of large oil storage tanks,in addition,the real-time inspection of foundation settlement can be used to predict the large oil storage tanks' service life.

Abstract:The mechanical behaviour of longitudinal plate-to-concrete-filled circular hollow section (CHS) connections under axial tension, eccentric tension and in-plane bending is extensively studied by the experimentally validated finite element analysis (FEA) in this paper. A total of 336 connections with a wide range of parameters on geometrical configurations, material properties and load positions was conducted to investigate (a) the general applicability of the experimental conclusion for the governing limit state, (b) the shear stress profile on the failure face and (c) the design equations based on fracture analytical models under various loading conditions. FEA extended the validity of experimental conclusion that the only governing limit state was punching shear failure instead of the deformation limit of 3% chord diameter (D). With an aim of proposing design equations based on ductile fracture mechanics, the stress distributions on the fracture failure face and the inner concrete were investigated by the parametric study, and then were adopted in the analytical models. Finally, design equations based on semi-theoretical models for the ultimate strength of longitudinal plate-to-concrete-filled CHS connections under three investigated loads were proposed. It is found the connection-capacity predictions agreed with both test and FEA results well.

Abstract:To accurately calculate the stress on the bottom plate of large oil storage tank, a new finite element modeling method was proposed. After the differences between the spring beam model and the elastic foundation contact model were analyzed preliminarily, the interaction between the foundation and the tank bottom plate was simulated by adopting the contact element. The errors among the theoretical values, finite element analysis (FEA) calculation values and the testing values of the radial stress on the bottom plate upper surface were also compared. Based on the settlement feature of the armored concrete ring wall and the elastic foundation, the settlement difference between the two different foundations was used as the boundary conditions of the FEA model. The elastic modulus of the foundation and the difference value of the settlement were estimated by pilot calculation. The results show that the theoretical values agree well with the monitored foundation settlement values. The proposed method can exactly simulate the oil-tank bottom-plate stress and predict the safety of the large oil tank in service.
Nonlinear finite element analysis on concrete -filled steel tubular columns during a whole period of fire

Abstract:Finite element method is employed to analyze the behavior of concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) columns during a whole period of fire. Temperature-load route, used to simulate the real fire action that applied to the CFST columns in a service state, involves four parts, i.e. loading, temperature increasing, temperature decreasing and reloading. A corresponding program is developed, named as NFEACFST. It is found that, in general, temperature-decreasing stage is also important and cannot be ignored. A CFST column, which can resist fire as temperature increasing, may fail in the subsequent temperature-decreasing stage. Typical load-deformation relationship curve of the columns in the whole period of fire is predicted by using the Program NFEACFST. To validate the FE model and the Program, some experimental data published in the past are collected and compared. And the data include fire resistance and residual bearing capacities of the CFST columns at ambient temperature, elevated temperature and after exposure to high temperature. The theoretical results agree with the experimental data well. The work done in this paper provides some references when analyze and design the CFST columns against fire.
FEM Analysis and Design of Long Short Pile Composite Foundation

Abstract:A practical case of the long short pile composite foundation is presented,in which the long and short piles are made of reinforced concrete and cement soil respectively.The stress distribution and displacement of the long short pile composite foundation、whole long pile composite foundation、whole short pile composite foundation and nature foundation under the same geological condition have been calculated and compared by FEM. The results show that by use of the long short pile composite foundation, the whole settlement is reduced effectively and the settlement difference of foundation slab is cut down. Long pile makes shallow soil stress reducing and deeper soil displacement falling. A design method of the long short pile composite foundation is introduced. After comparing the calculated value of the settlement with the actual measurement , it is proved that the design method is available.

Abstract:This paper presents three dimensional finite element method for analysis of dynamic response of large dynamic machine foundation considering soil-structure interaction. Dynamic machine foundation and its surrounding rock are taken as an integrated coupling object. Machine foundation is regarded as viscoelastic body to reflect deformation of foundation. Viscous-spring artificial boundary is constructed which can simulate not only the radiation damping of semi-infinite soil, but also the elasticity recovery capacity of the far field media on the boundary. The equivalent spring solid element is constructed for implementing the artificial boundary with commercial FE program. Analysis of dynamic response of Yanshan LDPE project is performed by the method. Quantitative analysis of major factors which affect dynamic response of large machine foundation is performed by numerical experiments and some useful conclusions are drawn.

Abstract:Large diameter circular closed coal yard has large coal pile, high coal pile height, and the cancellation of expansion joints, which has many adverse effects on the structure. The study of finite element analysis method, in view of the large stack on the effect of pile and pile of coal load and temperature effect on structure to do the analysis, the influence of material parameters was verified the correctness of the structure internal force under the condition of various loads is obtained as a result, the temperature effect may produce several times the pile of coal load internal force, provides reference for engineering design.

Abstract:In view of the large numbers of unbalanced excavation in the current engineering,a 2D finite element analysis model built on ANSYS is proposed in the paper.The stress and strain of the supporting structure have been calculated in the conditions of different depth of excavation,over loading and soil distribution,and also some basic rules are summed up.Finally,a project is under the optimization of design.The calculated results show that both the analysis and design optimization are feasible,so it’s valuable to the practice.

Abstract:Considered comprehensively with the friction between structure and soil, study was carried out to simulate the interaction between bottom plate and foundation with contact element. New modelling method for stress calculation of large liquid-storage tank was established. For it, average settlement difference of the foundations was utilized as boundary condition, replacing the existing bedding value and elastic modulus, which are difficult to be measured in practical engineering. The peak stress over fillet weld area on the bottom plate, which was derived by the finite-element analysis modelling method based on settlement difference, agreed well with the measured values. It shows that other than accurately calculating the stress of bottom plate, this method can also carry out real-time monitoring and forecast the operational life span of large liquid-storage tank.

Abstract:The ultra-large capacity end-plate connections,which can be applied in steel structures with large spans or heavy loads,can provide larger moment resistance than the ordinary end-plate connections and the large capacity endplate connections.However,the design method for the ordinary end-plate connections cannot be applied to the new-form connections directly because of the inhomogeneous distribution of the tension load carried by the bolts as well as the complicated stress state in the end plate.Finite element models are established and validated to be reliable with the existing test results.The performance of the ultra-large capacity end-plate connections is analyzed with the proposed model.The yield line model of the end plate in the tension side,as well as the distribution model of the tension load carried by the bolts in the tension side,is proposed according to the results.Based on the Chinese code and the proposed models,a design method for the ultra-large capacity end-plate connections is presented.The design moment resistance of the ultra-large capacity end-plate connections obtained by the proposed method is compared to that of the finite element models.Under the ultimate limit state of high-strength bolts specified in the Chinese code,the proposed method can offer a safer result.

Abstract:In a petrochemical companies fertilizer plant,the heat exchange tube of the vertical high pressure waste heat boiler was frequently explode and leak.In order to solve the problem,the finite element analysis software ANSYS was used to design nonstandard parts,such as even cover according to Analytical Design Standards for Steel Pressure Vessels(JB4732—95).And the dangerous cross sections are analyzed and verified.The waste heat boiler possessing vertical water conduit type is rebuilt as horizontal fire tube structure,it solves some problems about heat exchange tube exploding and leaking.The method bring huge economics benefit,it offers the reference for designing and rebuilding the waste heat boiler.

Abstract:To study the effect of stress and distortion of large-scale basic oxygen furnace system on the production safety and the optimization on structure design,a 3D finite element method is used to establish the assembly body model of the overall structure for a new basic oxygen furnace. The stress and displacement of the basic oxygen furnace under gravity load are computed at different operating angle. Through analyzing the stress,distortion,and displacement of the components in detail,the stress and displacement changes with the operating angle are studied and the improvement solution is proposed. The results can provide computation references to the design and application of basic oxygen furnace system.

Abstract:The combined connection with welds and bolds has advantages of both welds and bolts connections, and can be widely used in reinforcing the joint in steel structure. In this paper, the Finite Element Method (FEM) was taken to analyze the carrying capacity of the combined connection with bolts and welds, and the results ware compared with those come from experimental investigation. Further analysis based on FEM ware performed to research the failure mode and bearing performance of the combined connection and the contribution of bolts and welds .Advice was provided for related design.

Abstract:Recently,the dryer cylinder of paper machine tends towards large-scale high pressure obviously.In this article,a typical Φ3600×3150 mm cast iron dryer,which is just being developed and will break through the limit pressure 0.8 MPa of the cast iron pressure vessel,is analyzed by finite element method.The dangerous stress zone is described in the contour graph and the cause of stress distribution is discussed.Some general suggestions on how to decrease the stress level are put forward.The method of FEA is very useful to such dryers' design.
