Abstract:The study utilizes the system combined bioreactor with landfill site to treat leachate. The results show that the system helped the degradation of the organic pollutants in the leachate to be divided into two-phases, the hydrolytic fermentation and acid-production phases mainly occurred in the landfill site, the acidification rate was 40%-50%, the methane-production chiefly occurred in the bioreactor(UASB). It treated the leachate significantly and benefits the collection and utilization of methane gas. Also, the system accelerates the process of degrading municipal solid waste and stabilizing landfill site.

Abstract:About 90% of municipal solid wastes (153 million tons in 2007) are filled in landfills, which have great potential stability and pollution problems, in China. Sustainable technologies are attended to solve these problems and improve the landfill performance. These technologies can reduce landfill area through centralization and large-scale landfilling. High-performance collection and control measures of leachate and landfill gas are developed to reduce landfill pollution loading. The biodegradation process of solid waste is accelerated to increase landfill capacity. The concept of. Systems engineering. is implemented in design, operation and management of landfills to achieve a higher performance. This paper presents primary research works of mainland China in the sustainable landfill technologies, including solid-liquid-gas interaction, temporal and special variation of waste engineering properties, and control of leachate, gas, stability and pollution. Finally, aspects worthy of further research are addressed.

Abstract:Utilizing the unique vertical aerobic-anoxic-anerobic ecological enviornment of landfills and adopting intermittent aeration at the top of landfilled refuse, this paper studied the performance of leachate nitrogen removal in the bioreactor landfill system. The results showed that intermittent aeration at the top of landfilled refuse could stimulate the growth of nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria. The population of denitrifying bacteria was 4 to approximately 13 orders of magnitude higher than that in conventional landfilled waste layers, and the maximal value of nitrifying bacteria population reached 10(9) cells g(-1). The bioreactor landfill system with intermittent aeration at the top of landfilled refuse increased the potential of nitrogen removal from re-circulated leachate in the landfill bioreactor. By the end of the experiment, the concentrations of leachate NH4(+) -N and total nitrogen (TN) decreased to 186 mg x L(-1) and 289 mg x L(-1), being only 18% and 26% of control, respectively. Intermittent aeration at the top of landfilled refuse also accelerated refuse decomposition, and increased the degree of waste stabilization.

Abstract:With comparison of a traditional landfill, a joint recirculation of concentrated leachate and leachate to landfills with or without a microaerobic reactor for leachate treatment was investigated in this study. The results showed that the joint recirculation of concentrated leachate and leachate with a microaerobic reactor for leachate treatment could not only utilize the microaerobic reactor to buffer the fluctuation of quality and quantity of leachate during landfill stabilization, but also reduce the inhibitory effect of acidic pH and high concentrations of ammonium in recycled liquid on microorganisms and accelerate the degradation of landfilled waste. After 390 days of operation, the discharge of COD and total nitrogen (TN) from the landfill with leachate pretreatment by a microaerobic reactor was 7.4 and 0.9 g, respectively, which accounted for 0.7% and 2.6% of COD, 1.9% and 7.5% of the TN discharge from the landfills without recirculation and directly recirculated with leachate and concentrated leachate, respectively. The degradation of the organic matter and biodegradable matter (BDM) in the landfill reactors could fit well with the first-order kinetics. The highest degradation of the organic matter and BDM was observed in the joint recirculation system with a microaerobic reactor for leachate treatment with the degradation constant of the first-order kinetics of 0.001 and 0.002.

Abstract:High leachate generation rate and high leachate level were observed at most of the land-fills built in 1990s in south China. Based on the site investigation and field measurements at several typi-cal landfills, the key influence factors of leachate generation rate are analyzed from the perspective of wa-ter balance. The existing problems in the control of leachate generation rate and leachate level are dis-cussed, and some improvement measures are proposed on the basis of the engineering experiences at home and abroad, including the use of cut-off ditch with vertical curtain wall in the bottom to cut off the outer surface and subsurface runoff, the application of alternative cover materials to avoid the formation of leachate blockage layer, anti-clogging design and flushing of leachate collection and drainage system.

Abstract:Leachate quantity and level controls are now recognized as key problems associated with environmentally sound operation of MSW landfills. Water-balance-method was adopted to analyze the variation of leachate quantity and level in a large landfill in China under average rainfall and instantaneous storm conditions,and the calculated results coincided well with field monitoring data. The implementation effects of different emergency and long-term measures were simulated and analyzed. The implementation effects of control measures were good.

Abstract:High ammonia concentration of recycled landfill leachate makes it very difficult to treat. In this work, a vertical aerobic/anoxic/anaerobic lab-scale bioreactor landfill system, which was constructed by intermittent aeration at the top of landfilled waste, as a bioreactor for in situ nitrogen removal was investigated during waste stabilization. Intermittent aeration at the top of landfilled waste might stimulate the growth of nitrifying bacteria and denitrifying bacteria in the top and middle layers of waste. The nitrifying bacteria population for the landfill bioreactor with intermittent aeration system reached between106 and 108cells/dryg waste, although it decreased 2 orders of magnitude on day 30, due to the inhibitory effect of the acid environment and high organic matter in the landfilled waste. The denitrifying bacteria population increased by between 4 and 13 orders of magnitude compared with conventional anaerobic landfilled waste layers. Leachate NO3−–N concentration was very low in both two experimental landfill reactors. After 105 days operation, leachate NH4+–N and TN concentrations for the landfill reactor with intermittent aeration system dropped to 186 and 289mg/l, respectively, while they were still kept above 1000mg/l for the landfill reactor without intermittent aerobic system. In addition, there is an increase in the rate of waste stabilization as well as an increase of 12% in the total waste settlement for the landfill reactor with intermittent aeration system.

Abstract:Nitrogen removal and refuse stabilization were investigated in the bioreactor landfills with intermittent aeration at the top of landfilled refuse or an aerobic nitrifying reactor using treated leachate recirculation.The results showed that the decrease in leachate NH_4~+-N concentration in the bioreactor landfill system with intermittent aeration at the top of landfilled refuse was slower than that with an aerobic nitrifying reactor using treated leachate recirculation,but the theoretical energy consumption of the former was about 98% lower than the latter.The infrastructure investment of aerobic nitrifying reactor and disposal of sludge were no longer indispensable.The way of intermittent aeration at the top of landfilled refuse accelerated the degsadation of waste and organic matter in leachate,increased the degree of waste stabilization and enhanced the subsidence by 10%-12%.However,an aerobic reactor using treated leachate recirculation would bring about a shortage of carbon source at later stage of refuse decomposition,which resulted in slower waste stabilization.Because of the organic matter consumption of denitrifiaction process and the metabolic activity of aerobes,leachate maximal COD_(Cr) and VFA concentrations in the bioreactor landfill system with intermittent aeration at the top of landfilled refuse ammounted to only 50% of the control,and the gas production from the methanogenic reactor reduced by 42%-44%.

Abstract:Landfill leachate poses significant risks to the environment and human health if not managed properly due to its potential to contaminate soil, ground, and surface waters. Consequently, effluent standards for landfill leachate have been continuously reviewed to manage these risks. A combination of treatment techniques (e.g., physico-chemical and biological) are usually required to treat landfill leachate due to its complexity, variability, and potentially high concentrations of pollutants. This review considers the various types of techniques used to treat landfill leachate/leachate concentrate, including advanced oxidation process (AOP), membrane bioreactor, denitrification, biofilm reactors, and electrocoagulation. The occurrence and treatment of emerging contaminants in landfill leachate, and opportunities for development are also considered. The review covers the basic principles through to the latest developments in research, including the effectiveness of engineering applications, their economic and technical challenges, together with current gaps in the knowledge and the prospects for leachate treatment. A systematic review of the technical characteristics of the engineering applications, used in leachate membrane concentrate treatment, showed that low-energy direct heat transfer evaporation technology had good prospects for future development. Refractory organic compounds, high concentrations of ammonia, high salinity, and concentrated leachate were of high concern. Hence, extensive research has been conducted on the degradation of refractory organic compounds using various AOPs, and the denitrification of ammonia species by novel biological pathways (e.g., anaerobic ammonium oxidation, short-cut denitrification processes). Despite the significant number of promising laboratory scale applications, further research is needed to demonstrate their effectiveness on a commercial/large scale.

Abstract:With the continuous improvement of living standard and the acceleration of urbanization process, the output of city rubbish in unceasing increase year by year and the city rubbish is growing at an annual rate of 9% similar to 10%. Relative to the method of incineration and compost treatment, sanitary landfill is the most commonly used methods in garbage disposal in China. However, plenty of leachate will produce in the process of landfill disposal, it may cause secondary pollution if not disposed well. Therefore, waste leachate treatment is critical to meet the requirement of environment. Due to the high concentration of pollutants in waste leachate, composition is complex and contains a large number of poisonous and harmful material, regular physical chemical method and biological treatment methods of waste leachate is very difficult to up to standard.

Abstract:Compared with landfill leachate, the concentration of organic compounds and ammonia nitrogen and other pollutants in hazardous waste safe landfill leachate waslower, and it contained a certain amount of heavy metals and refractory organic compounds. With the design of wastewater treatment system of a solid waste disposal Co. Ltd. for 200 m3/d, using "micro electrolysis & fenton oxidation & heavy metal reduction & coagulation sedimentation & hydrolysis acidification &contact oxidation"process, the effluent quality could stable meet the takeover standard of the local sewage treatment plant (ρ(COD)≤ 500 mg/L). In the advanced treatment process of "advanced oxidation & coagulation sedimentation", the effluent quality could meet the standard of water reuse(ρ(COD)≤100 mg/L). And this process had the advantages of obvious effect, stable operation and easy operation.

Abstract:Leachate recirculation (LR) in municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills operated as bioreactors offers significant economic and environmental benefits. The subsurface application method of vertical wells is one of the most common LR techniques. The objective of this study was to develop a novel two-dimensional model of leachate recirculation using vertical wells. This novel method can describe leachate flow considering the effects of MSW settlement while also accounting separately for leachate flow in saturated and unsaturated zones. In this paper, a settlement model for MSW when considering the effects of compression and biodegradation on the MSW porosity was adopted. A numerical model was proposed using new governing equations for the saturated and unsaturated zones of a landfill. The following design parameters were evaluated by simulating the recirculated leachate volume and the influence zones of waste under steady-state flow conditions: (1) the effect of MSW settlement, (2) the effect of the initial void ratio, (3) the effect of the injected head, (4) the effect of the unit weight, (5) the effect of the biodegradation rate, and (6) the effect of the compression coefficient. The influence zones of LR when considering the effect of MSW settlement are smaller than those when neglecting the effect. The influence zones and LR volume increased with an increase in the injection pressure head and initial void ratio of MSW. The proposed method and the calculation results can provide important insight into the hydrological behavior of bioreactor landfills.

Abstract:Leachate recirculation in municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills operated as bioreactors offers significant economic and environmental benefits. Combined drainage blanket (DB)–horizontal trench (HT) systems can be an alternative to single conventional recirculation approaches and can have competitive advantages. The key objectives of this study are to investigate combined drainage blanket –horizontal trench systems, to analyze the effects of applying two recirculation systems on the leachate migration in landfills, and to estimate some key design parameters (e.g., the steady-state flow rate, the influence width, and the cumulative leachate volume). It was determined that an effective recirculation model should consist of a moderate horizontal trench injection pressure head and supplementary leachate recirculated through drainage blanket, with an objective of increasing the horizontal unsaturated hydraulic conductivity and thereby allowing more leachate to flow from the horizontal trench system in a horizontal direction. In addition, design charts for engineering application were established using a dimensionless variable formulation.

Abstract:Landfill leachate, especially when produced in old municipal solid waste landfills, is a challenging type of wastewater which contains a variety of toxic substances. The existence of pollutants in the landfill leachate is primarily due to inadequate solid waste separation at the source. Pretreatment on site is a must for the landfill leachate to be safely released into the environment. One-step treatment is insufficient since landfill leachate has a complex composition that spatially and temporally varies. Often, the landfill leachate and municipal wastewater are treated together. Biological treatment is a routine technique which is applied to landfill leachate less than five years old. The concentration of easily biodegradable organic matter in the young landfill leachate declines with time and, as a result, the application of physical and chemical treatment processes is required. The goal of the current work is to investigate the usefulness and capability of the most efficient and widely available technique/s for landfill leachate treatment, to identify the main challenges and strengths of each technology and seek the optimum solution.

Abstract:According to the current situations of Shenzhen city, an engineering project using biological treatment method was put forward to treat supernatant from night soil sludge and leachate from Yu Long Keng MSW landfill. Comparatively, UASB technology and active sludge technology was recommended to treat the combined wastewater of the supernatant and leachate, and high temperature composting technology was recommended to treat the residue from night soil sludge and sludge from biological treatment process.

Abstract:<p>Landfill application is the most common approach for biowaste treatment via leachate treatment system. When municipal solid waste deposited in the landfills, microbial decomposition breaks down the wastes generating the end products, such as carbon dioxide, methane, volatile organic compounds, and liquid leachate. However, due to the landfill age, the fluctuation in the characteristics of landfill leachate is foreseen in the leachate treatment plant. The focuses of the researchers are keeping leachate from contaminating groundwater besides keeping potent methane emissions from reaching the atmosphere. To address the above issues, scientists are required to adopt green biological methods to keep the environment safe. This review focuses on the assorting of research papers on organic content and nitrogen removal from the leachate via recent effective biological technologies instead of conventional nitrification and denitrification process. The published researches on the characteristics of various Malaysian landfill sites were also discussed. The understanding of the mechanism behind the nitrification and denitrification process will help to select an optimized and effective biological treatment option in treating the leachate waste. Recently, widely studied technologies for the biological treatment process are aerobic methane oxidation coupled to denitrification (AME-D) and partial nitritation–anammox (PN/A) process, and both were discussed in this review article. This paper gives the idea of the modification of the conventional treatment technologies, such as combining the present processes to make the treatment process more effective. With the integration of biological process in the leachate treatment, the effluent discharge could be treated in shortcut and novel pathways, and it can lead to achieving "3Rs" of reduce, reuse, and recycle approach.</p>

Abstract:Developing countries have begun to investigate bioreactor landfills for municipal solid waste management. This paper describes the impacts of leachate recirculation and recirculation loadings on waste stabilization, landfill gas (LFG) generation and leachate characteristics. Four simulated anaerobic columns, R1–R4, were each filled with about 30tons of waste and recirculated weekly with 1.6, 0.8 and 0.2m3 leachate and 0.1m3 tap water. The results indicated that the chemical oxygen demand (COD) half-time of leachate from R1 was about 180 days, which was 8–14 weeks shorter than that of R2–R4. A large amount of LFG was first produced in R1, and its generation rate was positively correlated to the COD or volatile fatty acid concentrations of influent leachates after the 30th week. By the 50th week of recirculation, the waste in R1 was more stabilized, with 931.2kg COD or 175.6kg total organic carbon released and with the highest landfill gas production. However, this contributed mainly to washout by leachate, which also resulted in the reduction of LFG generation potential and accumulation of ammonia and/or phosphorus in the early stage. Therefore, the regimes of leachate recirculation should be adjusted to the phases of waste stabilization to enhance efficiency of energy recovery. Integrated with the strategy of in situ leachate management, extra pre-treatment or post-treatment methods to remove the nutrients are recommended.
