Abstract:Leachate quantity and level controls are now recognized as key problems associated with environmentally sound operation of MSW landfills. Water-balance-method was adopted to analyze the variation of leachate quantity and level in a large landfill in China under average rainfall and instantaneous storm conditions,and the calculated results coincided well with field monitoring data. The implementation effects of different emergency and long-term measures were simulated and analyzed. The implementation effects of control measures were good.

Abstract:In order to study landfill gas migration rule in China ,a hydraulic-gas coupled model is developed based on characteristics of MSW in China .The extracting test on Jiangcungou landfill is investigated by using the model proposed in this paper .The results show that the influence radius of extract well decrease due to the increase of saturation signifi-cantly ,and increase when leachate level in landfill drops .Keeping a low leachate level is an effective way to improve the landfill gas collection efficiency .According to the analysis results ,some suggestions are proposed for high kitchen waste content landfill management which are the component characteristics and degradation law of MSW with high kitchen waste content should be considered in design of extraction wells spacing ,leachate level in landfill has to be controlled to im-prove the efficiency of landfill gas collection .

Abstract:About 90% of municipal solid wastes (153 million tons in 2007) are filled in landfills, which have great potential stability and pollution problems, in China. Sustainable technologies are attended to solve these problems and improve the landfill performance. These technologies can reduce landfill area through centralization and large-scale landfilling. High-performance collection and control measures of leachate and landfill gas are developed to reduce landfill pollution loading. The biodegradation process of solid waste is accelerated to increase landfill capacity. The concept of. Systems engineering. is implemented in design, operation and management of landfills to achieve a higher performance. This paper presents primary research works of mainland China in the sustainable landfill technologies, including solid-liquid-gas interaction, temporal and special variation of waste engineering properties, and control of leachate, gas, stability and pollution. Finally, aspects worthy of further research are addressed.

Abstract:High leachate generation rate and high leachate level were observed at most of the land-fills built in 1990s in south China. Based on the site investigation and field measurements at several typi-cal landfills, the key influence factors of leachate generation rate are analyzed from the perspective of wa-ter balance. The existing problems in the control of leachate generation rate and leachate level are dis-cussed, and some improvement measures are proposed on the basis of the engineering experiences at home and abroad, including the use of cut-off ditch with vertical curtain wall in the bottom to cut off the outer surface and subsurface runoff, the application of alternative cover materials to avoid the formation of leachate blockage layer, anti-clogging design and flushing of leachate collection and drainage system.

Abstract:Utilizing the unique vertical aerobic-anoxic-anerobic ecological enviornment of landfills and adopting intermittent aeration at the top of landfilled refuse, this paper studied the performance of leachate nitrogen removal in the bioreactor landfill system. The results showed that intermittent aeration at the top of landfilled refuse could stimulate the growth of nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria. The population of denitrifying bacteria was 4 to approximately 13 orders of magnitude higher than that in conventional landfilled waste layers, and the maximal value of nitrifying bacteria population reached 10(9) cells g(-1). The bioreactor landfill system with intermittent aeration at the top of landfilled refuse increased the potential of nitrogen removal from re-circulated leachate in the landfill bioreactor. By the end of the experiment, the concentrations of leachate NH4(+) -N and total nitrogen (TN) decreased to 186 mg x L(-1) and 289 mg x L(-1), being only 18% and 26% of control, respectively. Intermittent aeration at the top of landfilled refuse also accelerated refuse decomposition, and increased the degree of waste stabilization.

Abstract:With comparison of a traditional landfill, a joint recirculation of concentrated leachate and leachate to landfills with or without a microaerobic reactor for leachate treatment was investigated in this study. The results showed that the joint recirculation of concentrated leachate and leachate with a microaerobic reactor for leachate treatment could not only utilize the microaerobic reactor to buffer the fluctuation of quality and quantity of leachate during landfill stabilization, but also reduce the inhibitory effect of acidic pH and high concentrations of ammonium in recycled liquid on microorganisms and accelerate the degradation of landfilled waste. After 390 days of operation, the discharge of COD and total nitrogen (TN) from the landfill with leachate pretreatment by a microaerobic reactor was 7.4 and 0.9 g, respectively, which accounted for 0.7% and 2.6% of COD, 1.9% and 7.5% of the TN discharge from the landfills without recirculation and directly recirculated with leachate and concentrated leachate, respectively. The degradation of the organic matter and biodegradable matter (BDM) in the landfill reactors could fit well with the first-order kinetics. The highest degradation of the organic matter and BDM was observed in the joint recirculation system with a microaerobic reactor for leachate treatment with the degradation constant of the first-order kinetics of 0.001 and 0.002.

Abstract:Take a solid waste landfill site as an example,SLOPE/W software based on limit equilibrium method was used to analysis the influence of slope of waste pile,water level of waste leachate,interface strength within the liner system,and length of anchoring platform on the slope stability of the landfill.The results showed that the potential slip surface of waste pile passed the bottom liner layer.The interface strength with liner system,slope of waste pile,and water level of waste leachate had outstanding effect on the stability.The length of anchoring platform had little effect on the stability.According to the influence analysis of parameters,some treatment measures and methods were proposed.

Abstract:The study utilizes the system combined bioreactor with landfill site to treat leachate. The results show that the system helped the degradation of the organic pollutants in the leachate to be divided into two-phases, the hydrolytic fermentation and acid-production phases mainly occurred in the landfill site, the acidification rate was 40%-50%, the methane-production chiefly occurred in the bioreactor(UASB). It treated the leachate significantly and benefits the collection and utilization of methane gas. Also, the system accelerates the process of degrading municipal solid waste and stabilizing landfill site.

Abstract:Due to difficult disposal of municipal landfill leachate,a very long process was introduced to treat leachate in a landfill of Sichuan.Results showed that the process had very strong adaptation ability to the change of water quality,with the effluent quality meeting discharge standard of Class II.The components of the system,important structure and their design parameters as well as debugging and operation of the sanitary landfill were also described.

Abstract:Landfill leachate poses significant risks to the environment and human health if not managed properly due to its potential to contaminate soil, ground, and surface waters. Consequently, effluent standards for landfill leachate have been continuously reviewed to manage these risks. A combination of treatment techniques (e.g., physico-chemical and biological) are usually required to treat landfill leachate due to its complexity, variability, and potentially high concentrations of pollutants. This review considers the various types of techniques used to treat landfill leachate/leachate concentrate, including advanced oxidation process (AOP), membrane bioreactor, denitrification, biofilm reactors, and electrocoagulation. The occurrence and treatment of emerging contaminants in landfill leachate, and opportunities for development are also considered. The review covers the basic principles through to the latest developments in research, including the effectiveness of engineering applications, their economic and technical challenges, together with current gaps in the knowledge and the prospects for leachate treatment. A systematic review of the technical characteristics of the engineering applications, used in leachate membrane concentrate treatment, showed that low-energy direct heat transfer evaporation technology had good prospects for future development. Refractory organic compounds, high concentrations of ammonia, high salinity, and concentrated leachate were of high concern. Hence, extensive research has been conducted on the degradation of refractory organic compounds using various AOPs, and the denitrification of ammonia species by novel biological pathways (e.g., anaerobic ammonium oxidation, short-cut denitrification processes). Despite the significant number of promising laboratory scale applications, further research is needed to demonstrate their effectiveness on a commercial/large scale.

Abstract:Leachate head in municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills can be very high (e.g., >10 m) in some Chinese landfills and can continuously change during the service life of the landfill. Variations of leachate head can induce time-dependent seepage velocity changes in the liner, which may lead to a change of transport mechanisms of contaminants. An analytical model for contaminant transport through clay liner system considering the effects of leachate head variations is presented. The analytical solution is obtained using the recursive method and the Green's function approach. The proposed analytical solution is verified by numerical results. The model is then applied to investigate the effects of variable leachate head on the transport of contaminants. The results indicated that time-dependent advection arising from leachate head variations may play a significant part when investigating contaminant transport through a clay liner. The contaminant concentrations at the bottom of the liner predicted by using fixed leachate head may be underestimated compared to the case with variable leachate heads. The bottom concentration of Pb2+ at t = 50 years for the case with H-D = 60 m can be 6.6 times larger than that of the case with fixed leachate head. The mechanisms of contaminant transfer may change from a diffusion-dominated process to an advection-dominated process. For example, the molecular diffusion is the dominant process in Event 1 (e.g., t < 5 years with Peclet number < 1) while advection induced by the variations of leachate head may play a more important role for contaminant transport when t > 5 years. Increasing leachate head can result in an earlier breakthrough time and steady state for contaminant transport. The breakthrough time of DCM for the case with H-D = 60 m can be 1.6 times lower than that for the case with fixed leachate head. Considering the effects of leachate head variations may be critical to design a more stable and reliable landfill liner.

Abstract:Considering the high variation of water quality, a landfill leachate from domestic refuse was treated through a complex process, which consists of iron bed, iron bed sedimentation tank, ammonia removal by ultrasonic, UASB reactor, photosynthetic bacteria reaction tank, hydrolysis-acidification tank, SBR reactor, settling and filtering tanks etc. The operation results show that the process has strong adaptability to variation of leachate. The quality of treated effluent is better than the Class II criteria specified in Standard for Pollution Control on the Landfill Site for Domestic Waste (GB 16889-1997). This paper documents the components, main units, design parameters, debugging operation and the economic analysis of the treatment system. The characteristics of the design are also summarized.

Abstract:260 tons concentrated leachate per day is produced at the leachate treatment plant at Chang'an landfill,which is considered to be recirculated into the landfill of municipal solid wastes.The effect of leachate recirculation on the slope stability of the landfill should be evaluated.The results from engineering geology and hydrogeology survey were firstly presented.Three-dimensional unsaturated-saturated seepage analyses were carried out by using GMS software to predict the change of leachate level as a result of the leachate recirculation.Based on the leachate levels and pore-water pressures obtained from the seepage analyses,slope stability analyses were carried out to evaluate the safety of the landfill.Some control measures were proposed to eliminate the adverse effect of leachate recirculation on the landfill safety.The analyses indicate that the factor of safety(FS) for the landfill with the current leachate level is slightly greater than the safety requirement(FS=1.3),and the current leachate level happens to be the critical level.Direct leachate recirculation will result in a significant rise in leachate level,which will cause a significant decrease in the landfill safety.The landfill is likely to fail after a direct leachate recirculation.If the leachate recirculation is executed after the current leachate level is lowered down by 3 m and the resultant leachate level will be lower than the current leachate level,the landfill can remain safe.Vertical pumping wells are proposed to implement the drawdown work,and if 45 wells are used and pumping is conducfed for 3 mouths,the leachate level will decrease by 3 m,which meets the safety requirement.

Abstract:Leachate recirculation in municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills operated as bioreactors offers significant economic and environmental benefits. Combined drainage blanket (DB)–horizontal trench (HT) systems can be an alternative to single conventional recirculation approaches and can have competitive advantages. The key objectives of this study are to investigate combined drainage blanket –horizontal trench systems, to analyze the effects of applying two recirculation systems on the leachate migration in landfills, and to estimate some key design parameters (e.g., the steady-state flow rate, the influence width, and the cumulative leachate volume). It was determined that an effective recirculation model should consist of a moderate horizontal trench injection pressure head and supplementary leachate recirculated through drainage blanket, with an objective of increasing the horizontal unsaturated hydraulic conductivity and thereby allowing more leachate to flow from the horizontal trench system in a horizontal direction. In addition, design charts for engineering application were established using a dimensionless variable formulation.

Abstract:Landfill leachate is a serious pollution with high COD and NH3-N.The MBR-NF process was adopted to treat the leachate.The results showed that the average removal efficiency of COD and NH3-N both reached 99.5 %,and the purified water could reach the first level of standard for pollution control on the landfill site for domestic waste.The total operation cost was 19.55 yuan/m3.Compared with the other leachate treatment processes,the MBR-NF has significant advantages on both technique and economic sides.

Abstract:Leachate recirculation in municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills operated as bioreactors offers significant economic and environmental benefits. However, vertical well (VW) recirculation may not be an effective method because gravity will cause the recirculated leachate to flow directly downward to the leachate collection systems at the bottom of the landfill, resulting in a waste of recirculated leachate. One of the solutions to minimize the misapplication of leachate is to enable the leachate to flow in horizontal directions using combined spraying-VW systems, thus enabling it to flow through more MSW. The key objectives of this study were to investigate combined spraying-VW systems, to analyze the effects of applying spraying and VW recirculation systems simultaneously on the leachate migration in landfills, and to estimate some key design parameters (e.g., the steady-state flow rate, the influence radius, and the cumulative leachate volume). In addition, design charts for engineering application were established using a dimensionless variable formulation. The proposed design charts prove both simple and useful.

Abstract:Treatment of landfill leachate is a focus of researchers' attention as well as a difficult problem in field of wastewater treatment.Study on the treatment of landfill leachate by separation NH_3-N-SBRcoagulation-chlorination process was carried out and reported in this paper.The optimum process conditions of the method were achieved,moreover,the effect of SBR had been intensified.The results show that COD of leachate is reduced to 93.6 mg/L from 1360 mg/L,BOD_5 is reduced to 28 mg/L from 320 mg/L,NH_3-N is reduced to(16.1 mg/L) from 1098.6 mg/L,The eliminating rate of the chroma is close to 100%.This process is feasible for the treatment of landfill leachate.
