Abstract:⿢Faster mass separation is obtained with the use of stability islands of special shape (Xband) formed by two AC excitations. Only few cycles of the base AC excitation frequency ν is sufficient to eject unstable ions and it possible to obtain about 10000 mass resolution with ion residence time of only 100 RF cycles.⿢Mass separation of ions happens in only one direction which increases acceptance of the mass filter.⿢The instability bands which are used for mass separation appear only in the vicinity of the upper tip of the first stability region, so it possible to use the delayed DC ramp technique to improve signal sensitivity.⿢The operation with the use of additional AC excitations is not sensitive to many nonlinear field distortions. So the new method might be applied to quadrupole analyzers with lower mechanical accuracy for improving their mass resolving power.

Abstract:Abstract We study a method for mass-selective removal of ions from a Paul trap by parametric excitation. This can be achieved by applying an oscillating electric quadrupole field at twice the secular frequency $$\omega _{\text {sec}}$$ ω sec using pairs of opposing electrodes. While excitation near the resonance with the secular frequency $$\omega _{\text {sec}}$$ ω sec only leads to a linear increase of the amplitude with excitation duration, parametric excitation near $$2\, \omega _{\text {sec}}$$ 2 ω sec results in an exponential increase of the amplitude. This enables efficient removal of ions from the trap with modest excitation voltages and narrow bandwidth, therefore, substantially reducing the disturbance of ions with other charge-to-mass ratios. We numerically study and compare the mass selectivity of the two methods. In addition, we experimentally show that the barium isotopes with 136 and 137 nucleons can be removed from small ion crystals and ejected out of the trap while keeping $$^{138}\text {Ba}^{+}$$ 138 Ba + ions Doppler cooled, corresponding to a mass selectivity of better than $$\Delta m / m = 1/138$$ Δ m / m = 1 / 138 . This method can be widely applied to ion trapping experiments without major modifications since it only requires modulating the potential of the ion trap.

Abstract:We report the numerical investigations of quadrupole mass filters concerning stability islands created by auxiliary radio frequency (RF) voltage with high and low frequencies near q=0.9. The islands are located along the q axis near boundary value q=0 908 with a low a parameter. The analysis is based upon the matrix method for stability diagram calculations and ion trajectory numerical simulation The trajectory of ion motions is generated using Runge-Kutta-Nystrom-Dormand-Prince (RK-N-DP) order integration The ion source model with Gaussian distribution of initial positions and transverse velocities is used. In RF-only operation mode, a resolution power of about R-01=600 without peak tails is achieved with a separation time of about 50 RF cycles. Relatively high resolution power of about 2000-3000 is observed in DC+RF separation mode with a low frequency auxiliary RF signal. The boundaries of stability diagram for additional RF voltage with high frequency are strongly diffused until the separation time is increased up to n=300 RF cycles The strong influence of phase shifts between main drive RF voltage and small auxiliary RF voltage on transmission is also examined In DC+RF mode, the period of transmission varies with phase shift of pi or one period of the main drive RF vottage: and in RF-only mode this period is pi/2.

Abstract:In this work, the parametric quadrupole resonance caused by the phase modulation of waveform potential is studied. Based on analytical and numerical description of the ion motion in the quadrupole mass filter with the phase modulation, a stability island is found with good ion optical properties such as high ion transmission efficiency (16%), high mass resolution (peak width measured at 10% of peak height, R0.1 = 6000), the required separation time (100-150 radio frequency [RF] cycles), and good peak shape of trapezoid form. Furthermore, the analysis of the frequency spectrum of the applied potential and the quadrupole mass filter (QMF) acceptance are also presented; a resonance frequency is found from this spectrum. Finally, a suitable stability X-islands with relative modulation frequency, ν = 2 ± β , β = 1 P , 10 ≤ P ≤ 40 , is established and studied in detail. Here, β is the imaginary part of the characteristic exponent of stable solutions to the Mathieu equation.
Dipole and quadrupole resonance excitation in linear quadrupoles

Abstract:In the development of commercial quadrupole mass spectrometers, there is an interest in improving the performance characteristics such as transmission, resolution, and mass range. In particular, parametric and dipolar resonance excitation of trapping ions are used for linear quadrupole mass filters. Theoretical methods and numerical simulation of ion trajectories were applied for study of ion-optical properties. The review is devoted to description of different excitation methods to improve QMF performance and consists of three parts. The first part presents the results of a linear ion trap simulation for various operating conditions and excitation methods. The second part considers the effects of dipole excitation (DE) on the performance of the quadrupole mass filter. The last part analyzes the formation of stability islands by different methods of quadrupole excitation. To date conditions of mass separation in quadrupole mass filters with sin wave supply were described for stability islands of the first and third stability regions formed by quadrupole and DE. By complicating the electronics such methods allow to overcome the destructive influence of electric field distortions and obtain a resolving power and ion transmission efficiency comparable with commercial devices. At quadrupole resonance excitation by a two-frequency signal, it is possible to reduce the length of electrodes three times without losses in resolution and transmission, which reduces the cost of rod set production with micrometer accuracy. Dipole resonance excitation allows controlling the shape of the mass peak by changing amplitude and phase of the auxiliary AC signal. The main factors affecting the resolving power of a linear ion trap are described theoretically. The numerical modeling results are confirmed by experiment.

Abstract:A waveform isolation method is described for the massselective transmission of ions through quadrupole mass filters, and it is implemented on a new tandem mass analyzer instrument. The method features the application of broad-band waveforms comprising appropriate frequencies to cause mass-selective instability in ions of particular mass-to-charge (m/z) and to transmit all others. The experiment is implemented in a tandem quadrupole system in which the first mass filter is a rectilinear ion trap (RIT) operated in a continuous mass-selective mode to transmit ions of ions of one or more arbitrarily selected m/z value(s). The second analyzer was used to verify the quality of the mass selection achieved using the first analyzer via conventional quadrupole ion trap massselective instability scanning. A new subtype of product ion tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) scan, termed the summed product ion scan, is demonstrated with a mixture of biological compounds. It is used to characterize product ions arising after simultaneous isolation and collisional activation of multiple precursor species, in this case ions of the same analyte generated in different charge states. The summed product ion scan can be useful for enhancing sensitivity for the analyte of interest or for providing more comprehensive information about an analyte than is available by monitoring a single ionized form of the analyte. The analytical performance of the waveform isolation method is tested using simple drug mixtures, and its potential for increasing overall yields in preparative mass spectrometry is explored briefly. It is shown that efficiencies of ca. 70% of ion transfer to a surface for ion soft landing surface can be achieved. The upper mass range is limited by axial acceleration arising from the stretched geometry, and one solution to this problem is provided.

Abstract:This study investigates the transmission contour (shape of the mass peak) through the numerical simulation of ion trajectories in a quadrupole field with small spatial harmonics. The impact of the octupole component on the field is examined, demonstrating a possibility of achieving a resolving power of 5000 with a 2% octupole component and a negative constant component on a pair of electrodes of a smaller radius. A stability diagram near the working apex is significantly affected by the octupole field. The data from the previous experiment qualitatively validated the simulation results.

Abstract:The performance of quadrupole mass filters with added octopole fields in the range 2.0-4.0% has been investigated. The added fields are much greater than those normally added to conventional rod sets by mechanical tolerances or construction errors. Quadrupole rod sets with added octopole fields were constructed with round rods by making one pair of rods greater in diameter than the other pair. For positive ions, resolution at half height of only about 200 is possible if the negative direct current (dc) output of the quadrupole power supply is connected to the smaller rods. If the positive dc output of the quadrupole power supply is connected to the smaller rods, the resolution improves dramatically; a resolution at half height of 5800 has been observed with a rod set with 2.6% added octopole field. For negative ions the best resolution is obtained with the polarity of the dc reversed, i.e. with the negative dc applied to the smaller rods. These findings are unexpected in view of the literature that argues that to obtain high mass resolution with quadrupole mass filters, higher order multipoles must be kept as small as possible. Numerical simulations of peak shapes agree qualitatively with experiments. Simulation of the boundaries of the first stability region for positive ions shows that when the positive dc is applied to the smaller rods, the addition of a 2.0% octopole field causes the boundaries to shift slightly but the boundaries are well defined, and the tip of the stability region remains sharp. When the positive dc is applied to the larger rods, the boundaries of the stability region move out and become diffuse. For instruments that require a rod set that can be used both as a linear trap and a mass filter, these rod sets may offer improved trap performance while still being capable of providing conventional mass analysis. Abstract:Numeric experiments were performed to study the first and second stability regions and find the optimal configurations of a quadrupole mass filter constructed of circular quadrupole rods with a rectangular wave power supply. The ion transmission contours were calculated using ion trajectory simulations. For the first stability region, the optimal rod set configuration and the ratio r/r(0) is 1.110-1.115; for the second stability region, it is 1.128-1.130. Low-frequency direct current (DC) modulation with the parameters of m = 0.04-0.16 and nu = omega/Omega = 1/8-1/14 improves the mass peak shape of the circular rod quadrupole mass filter at the optimal r/r(0) ratio of 1.130. Abstract:This paper describes the physical design, rf measurement, and tuning result of a 325 MHz four-vane radio frequency quadrupole (RFQ) with a ramped inter-vane voltage. The 3-meter-long RFQ will accelerate the negative hydrogen ion beam from 50 keV to 3 MeV with a peak current of 5 mA, a pulse width of 10-40 mu s, and a maximum repetition rate of 0.5 Hz. During tuning we reveal that the coupling loop of the coaxial coupler adopted for this RFQ enhances the interference between the dipole field distribution and the coupling coefficient. Therefore, an iteration method is adopted to simultaneously achieve the desired field distribution and coupling coefficient. After tuning, the relative error between the measured field distribution and the designed curve for the operating quadrupole mode is within +/- 2.7%, and the dipole components are about +/- 1.9% of the quadrupole mode. The measured coupling coefficient of the rf power coupler equals 1.03, with the desired value of 1.04.

Abstract:A compact tandem mass spectrometer containing two quadrupole mass analyzers (Q), two octapole ion guides (o) and a static quadrupole ion beam-bending lens (q) (QoqoQ configuration) has been built for the study of ion/surface collisions. Positive or negative ions are generated by either electron impact ionization or chemical ionization, selected by mass-to-charge ratio using the first quadrupole mass analyzer, guided by the first octapole ion guide, bent by a static quadrupole lens through 90°, and then focused onto a surface at an angle of 45° with reference to the surface normal. The secondary ions generated from collisions with the target surface are collected at an emergent angle of 45°, guided by the second octapole ion guide, mass-analyzed by the second quadrupole mass analyzer, and finally detected. The collision energy can be varied from 0 to 500 eV. The primary ions can also be made to pass straight through the quadrupole bending lens and then examined by an electron multiplier prior to surface collisions. The surface can be introduced into the ion/surface collision region without venting the main chamber. The capabilities of the QoqoQ instrument are demonstrated by a variety of ion/surface collisional processes in the 10s of eV laboratory translational energy range. These include surface-induced dissociation, charge permutation, surface analysis via chemical sputtering, and selective surface modification via ion/surface reactions.
Square Parametric Excitation: A Digital Resonant Method for the Quadrupole Ion Trap

Abstract:Digital ion trap technology is an alternate method for driving quadrupole ion traps and mass filters using variable frequency, fixed amplitude RF square waves in place of variable amplitude, fixed frequency RF sine waves. This technique offers some advantages such as an increase in the high mass analysis range by varying frequency and lower overall voltage requirements. Here, we present a complex square waveform developed for resonant parametric excitation in a quadrupole linear ion trap. Unlike traditional resonance methods, the driving RF square wave and auxiliary square wave are coupled using the same digital circuitry without the need for transformer coupling. In this work, we use this complex waveform to selectively excite the first order parametric resonances of ion motion. The square parametric excitation method presented here employs a simple and repetitive circuit design consisting of a low-voltage waveform generator followed by a series of high-voltage MOSFET switches. This design allows for resonance methods to be easily implemented in the all-digital quadrupole. The complex square waveform can perform the same useful functions as sine wave auxiliary signals, such as selective mass elimination and mass isolation. We also demonstrate that the mass resolution performance and S/N of our digital mass spectrometer is improved by applying the complex square waveform during ion ejection.

Abstract:A commercial quadrupole/time-of-flight (QqTOF) tandem mass spectrometer has been adapted for ion/ion reaction studies. To enable mutual storage of oppositely charged ions in a linear ion trap, the oscillating quadrupole field of the second quadrupole of the system (Q2) serves to store ions in the radial dimension while auxiliary radio frequency is superposed on the end lenses of Q2 during the reaction period to create barriers in the axial dimension. A pulsed dual electrospray (ESI) source is directly coupled to the instrument interface for the purpose of proton transfer reactions. Singly and doubly charged protein ions as high in mass as 66 kDa are readily formed and observed after proton-transfer reactions. For the modified instrument, the mass resolving power is similar to 8000 for a wide m/z range, and the mass accuracy is similar to 20 ppm for external calibration and similar to 5 ppm for internal calibration after ion/ion reactions. Parallel ion parking is demonstrated with a six-component protein mixture, which shows the potential application of reducing spectral complexity and concentrating certain charge states. The current system has high flexibility with respect to defining MSn experiments involving collision-induced dissociation (CID) and ion/ion reactions. Protein precursor and CID product masses can be determined with good accuracy, providing an attractive platform for top-down proteomics. Electron transfer dissociation ion/ion reactions are implemented by using a pulsed nano-ESI/atmospheric pressure chemical ionization dual source for ionization. The reaction between protonated peptide ions and radical anions of 1,3-dinitrobenzene formed exclusively c- and z-type fragment ions.
RF Design and Tuning of a Deuteron RFQ for Detecting Impurity Deposition on a Tokamak

Abstract:Peking University and Southwestern Institute of Physics are jointly developing a new deuteron Radio Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ) accelerator to study the migration and deposition of impurities on the first wall of a tokamak facility. The RFQ operates at 162.5 MHz with the duty factor of 1%, which can accelerate 10 mA deuteron beam from 40 keV up to 1.5 MeV within 2.2 m length. Such four-vane RFQ is divided into two segments and equipped with 40 tuners in total. In the electromagnetic (EM) design, the dipole stabilizer rods (DSRs) were optimized to obtain a mode separation of 3.1 MHz. The tuners and undercuts were also designed and optimized to fulfill the requirements of the resonant frequency, flat longitudinal field distribution and field tuning. Following the EM design, multi-physics analysis and structure error analysis was carried out. The cavity was fabricated with 99.9% oxygen-free electronic (OFE) copper. The assembly and braze of each RFQ module have been completed, the results of metrological measurements via coordinate measuring machine (CMM) indicate that there was no unexpected deformation. The intrinsic Q-value of the whole cavity is 12834 in the low level radio frequency (RF) measurements, which is 87% of the theoretical simulation with electrical conductivity of 5.8 × 107 S/m. After tuning, the quadrupole perturbative component decreased from 2.6% to 0.6%, and the dipole perturbative components decreased from 6.1% to 1%.

Abstract:Methods for bidirectional ion transmission between distinct quadrupole arrays were developed on a quadrupole/time-of-flight tandem mass spectrometer (QqTOF) containing three quadrupoles (ion guide Q0, mass filter Q1, and collision cell Q2) and a reflectron TOF analyzer, for the purpose of implementing multistage ion/ion reaction experiments. The transfer efficiency, defined as the percentage of ions detected after two transfer steps relative to the initial ion abundance, was found to be about 60% between Q2 and Q0 (with passage through the intermediate array (Q1)) and almost 100% between Q2 and Q1. Efficient ion transfer enabled new means for executing MSn experiments on an instrument of this type by operating Q1 in rf/dc mode for performing multiple steps of precursor/product ion isolation while passing ions through Q1 or trapping ions in Q1. In the latter case, the Q1 functioned as a linear ion trap. Either collision induced dissociation (CID) or ion/ion reactions can be conducted in between each stage of mass analysis. MS3 or MS4 experiments were developed to illustrate the charge increase of peptide ions via two steps of charge inversion ion/ion reactions, CID of electron-transfer dissociation (ETD) products and CID of a metal-peptide complex formed from ion/ion reactions.

Abstract:A deuteron radio-frequency quadrupole (RFQ) is being built by the RFQ group at Peking University. It is a very compact high-current RFQ, operating at 162.5 MHz in continuous-wave mode. By optimizing the beam dynamics design, our simulations reached 98% transmission efficiency for acceleration of the 50-mA deuteron beam from 50 keV to 1 MeV, with an intervane voltage of 60 kV and a length of 1.809 m. This RFQ adopts a window-type structure, with low power consumption and sufficient mode separation, with no stabilizing rods required. Its magnetic coupling windows have been optimized by both electromagnetic simulation and the construction of an equivalent circuit model. The empirical equation based on the circuit model provides a new way to evaluate the effect of the window size on the frequency. In addition, an aluminum model of the full-length RFQ has been built and tested, and the results show good agreement with the simulations. During the tuning process, the magnetic coupling effect between quadrants was found to be unique to the window-type RFQ. We also propose a method to estimate the effects of different degrees of electric field unflatness on the beam transmission. For the cooling system design, the results of thermostructural analysis, verified by comparing results from ANSYS and CST, show that the special cooling channels provide a high cooling efficiency around the magnetic coupling windows. The maximal deformation of the structure was approximately 75 mu m. The beam-loading effect caused by a high current, and the coupler design, are also discussed.

Abstract:Rationale The triangular electrode linear ion trap with asymmetric geometry has been reported to possess a high ion unidirectional ejection efficiency and a reasonable mass resolution. To further improve its performance, a double resonant excitation method involving a dipolar and a quadrupolar resonant excitation was applied here. Methods The dipolar excitation method was carried out by applying a supplementary alternating voltage out of phase to one pair of the electrodes, whereas the quadrupolar excitation (QE) method was carried out by adding a supplementary alternating voltage in phase to another pair of electrodes. Numerical simulations were performed to explore the impact of the frequency difference between the alternating current (AC) and the QE voltage (∆ ω ), the frequency of the AC voltage ( ω AC ), and the QE voltage amplitude ( V QE ). Results The mass resolution could be improved to ~4700 , which was approximately twice compared to that with only dipolar resonant excitation, and the ion unidirectional ejection efficiency could be improved to 97%. Even with a high scan rate of 6000 Da/s, there was minimal loss of mass resolution caused by increased scan rate in double resonant excitation mode. Conclusions By employing the double resonant excitation method, the mass resolution could be further increased while maintaining a considerably high ion unidirectional ejection efficiency, which might be a simple and practical approach for developing a high‐performance miniature ion trap mass analyzer.

Abstract:The simultaneous acceleration of ${\mathrm{O}}^{+}$ and ${\mathrm{O}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ beams in a radio frequency quadruple accelerator has been numerically simulated and the results are presented in this paper. The micropulses of ${\mathrm{O}}^{+}$ and ${\mathrm{O}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ beams have been measured in dual beam acceleration experiments, which verified the numerical simulations and feasibilities of dual beam acceleration.

Abstract:We modified and optimized a first generation quadrupole time-of-flight (Q-TOF) 1 to perform tandem mass spectrometry on macromolecular protein complexes. The modified instrument allows isolation and subsequent dissociation of high-mass protein complexes through collisions with argon molecules. The modifications of the Q-TOF 1 include the introduction of (1) a flow-restricting sleeve around the first hexapole ion bridge, (2) a low-frequency ion-selecting quadrupole, (3) a high-pressure hexapole collision cell, (4) high-transmission grids in the multicomponent ion lenses, and (5) a low repetition rate pusher. Using these modifications, we demonstrate the experimental isolation of ions up to 12 800 mass-to-charge units and detection of product ions up to 38 150 Da, enabling the investigation of the gas-phase stability, protein complex topology, and quaternary structure of protein complexes. Some of the data reveal a so-far unprecedented new mechanism in gas-phase dissociation of protein oligomers whereby a tetramer complex dissociates into two dimers. These data add to the current debate whether gas-phase structures of protein complexes do retain some of the structural features of the corresponding species in solution. The presented low-cost modifications on a Q-TOF 1 instrument are of interest to everyone working in the fields of macromolecular mass spectrometry and more generic structural biology.

Abstract:This article investigates the quadrupole excitation of a trapped atom exposed to the tightly focused Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) beams with parallel and antiparallel spin angular momentum (SAM) and orbital angular momentum (OAM) under nonparaxial conditions. The Rabi frequency profile of allowed quadrupole transition channels, modified by SAM and OAM interaction, in the focal plane is provided. In the case of antiparallel SAM and OAM, the excitation probability undergoes substantial modification due to the considerable contribution of longitudinal intensity variations in tightly focused condition. The findings offer insights into controlling localized atom transition, including OAM transfer, with potential applications in qudit-based technologies.
