Abstract:Biomass gasification is a common technology of converting biomass into energy.The tar produced in the process ofbiomass gasification not only leads to equipment corrosion,pipeline blockage and secondary pollution,but also reduces the efficiency of biomass gasification.The classification,potential hazard and treatment methods of biomass tar are reviewed in this paper,with a focus on the recent research progress of catalytic cracking and plasma treatment methods.The advantages and disadvantages of different methods were compared.Physical method has the advantages of simple devices and easy operation,but the energy is not fully utilized and the secondary pollution exists.Thermal cracking can convert tar into gas and increase the energy of the produced gas,however,the process needs high temperature and cost.Having the lower temperature than thermal cracking,the catalytic cracking is the most active field in tar treatment,but the catalysts have the disadvantages of poor stability,easy deactivation,high cost etc.Plasma methods include cold plasma method and thermal plasma method,which are newly developed treatment methods of biomass tar in recent years.Possessing the characteristics of high temperature,high enthalpy and high electron density,the thermal plasma method provides new opportunity for the development of biomass tar processing technology.

Abstract:Biomass gasification is a commonly used means of biomass conversion.The inevitable by-product tar in gasification process has great harm.Beginning with the introduction of biomass gasification technology principles,devices and processes,the production,characteristics,influencing factors and harmfulness of tar during gasification process have discussed.The physical purification methods of gasification gas tar,such as cyclone-separation,wet cleaning and dry cleaning,are discussed.The chemical conversion methods of high-temperature pyrolysis and catalytic cracking are compared.The advantages,disadvantages and application of different methods are pointed out.How to control and optimize biomass gasification process,take appropriate tar removal technology,have become an important research direction for biomass gasification technologies.

Abstract:A high-efficiency method of tar and dust removal from fuel gas is of great significance to the development of biomass gasification. Streamer corona discharges, which can not only effectively crack the heavy organics to light molecules in raw syngas in reaction with O, H, OH radicals but also charge and separate the dust from the raw syngas with pulsed coronas, is a promising method for raw syngas cleaning. In this paper the status of tar and dust removal by streamer corona discharges were reviewed; issues on mechanism of tar cracking and dust abatement,current situation, key scientific and technical problems of the tar and dust removal from the biomass-derived syngas were analyzed. A conceptual design of an electrocyclone plasma reactor for simultaneous tar and dust removal was proposed. Finally, for the purpose of solving the problems of raw syngas cleaning during biomass gasification, several key research areas were briefly addressed.

Abstract:Biomass gasification is a potential technology for providing clean gas in rural area. However, high contents of tar and ash in the gas have become serious problems, because it not only sends out offensive odour, but also clogs the gas pipe. A downdraft gasifier was used as gas generator, tar and ash content in the gas were studied. Besides, the gas cleaning efficiency of cleaning devices, including water spraying device and drying device, were also studied. The results showed that reduction zone temperature has a significant influence on tar and ash producing. High temperature (above 650°C) could reduce tar and ash contents (lower than 2000 mg/m 3). Besides, using water-spraying and drying devices, efficiency of gas cleaning devices reached 99.5%, tar and ash contents after cleaning were below 10 mg/m 3, accord the gas cleaning demand.
In-situ elimination of biomass gasification tar based on the understanding of tar formation process: A review

Abstract:Biomass tar is the bottleneck of biomass gasification, which lowers the quality of syngas, corrodes downstream equipment, and causes serious environmental pollution. Tar can typically be removed by in-situ and ex-situ approaches. Previous studies paid lots of attention on ex-situ method because it is efficient and easy to control, while the in-situ method shows obvious advantages as sustainability, low cost and low construction complexity. Although the in-situ method shows obvious advantages compared to the ex-situ method, the current in-situ method exhibits relatively crude and undeveloped, which is due to the lack of scientific guidance based on the perspective of tar formation. A successful in-situ approach relies on the in-depth understanding on tar formation, which is a research gap in biomass gasification field. In this work, a multi-faceted and comprehensive review on tar formation during biomass gasification is presented, and the current and future development of insitu tar control is discussed. It is hoped this review paper can shed a light on the tar formation process, and become a milestone for the in-situ tar controls and sustainable development of gasification technology.

Abstract:Sludge pyrolysis and biomass gasification integrated process (SPBG) is an attractive route for the comprehensive utilization of the two materials but more tar is produced in this process compared to traditional biomass steam gasification. Nitrogen-containing compounds in the tar bring threatens to the environment and heavy components in the tar contributes to undesired coke formation. In current study, the evolution of heavy tar, especially the nitrogen-rich components, during SPBG is revealed for the first time. It was found that heavy components were mainly distributed in the mass range of 150–450 Da, where aromatics consisted of carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen atoms were the most abundant. Deamination (NH3) and the combination of quinoline accompanied with the generation of the heavy components. Organics from sludge could react with biomass to form heavier oxygen-containing molecules. Meanwhile, steam from sludge promoted heavy components to crack by tar reforming reactions and consumed radicals in bio-char to inhibit the catalytic cracking of tar. Under the combination of above reactions, more heavy molecules were generated at low sludge volatile/biomass ratio and the aromatic content in the heavy tar decreased at high sludge volatile/biomass ratio.

Abstract:This research focused on the reaction features and kinetics of tar catalytic conversion by char based on the generation and evolution of gas products. To probe the roles of heat and catalysis in tar conversion, a micro fluidized bed reaction analyzer (MFBRA) was used to assess tar thermal cracking (TC) and catalytic cracking (CC) by char at 1073, 1123, 1173, and 1223 K. The tar cracking behavior of the individual gas components (H 2 , CO, CO 2 , and CH 4 ), generation rates, and reaction kinetics were thoroughly investigated. The results show that TC and CC included a fast (Stage-1) and slow (Stage-2) conversion stage, in which Stage-1 contributed more than 80% of the total conversion. Compared to TC, tar CC required a longer reaction time but obtained higher conversions to individual gas components and the total gas products. The final conversion ratios ( X CC/TC ) of H 2 , CO, CO 2 , and CH 4 were kept above 1 at the tested temperature. The char catalytic action was very remarkable, especially at low temperatures. In tar CC, the generation rate of individual gas components slowly declined after quickly reaching the peak, forming a relatively stable zone. The volume reaction model (VRM) well described the tar conversion behavior with and without char. Compared to TC, char lowered the activation energy ( Ea ) of gas generation. For individual gas components (H 2 , CO, CO 2 , CH 4 ) and the total gas products, the corresponding reduction degree of Ea was 25.56%, 24.18%, 22.14%, 4.75%, and 21.71%, respectively, further displaying the promoting impact of char. The evaluated generation features and kinetics of individual components in the gas products will benefit the in-situ tar removal in the biomass gasification process.

Experimental Study on Catalytic and Thermal Cracking of Tar from Biomass Pyrolysis

Abstract:Tar from biomass gasification process is harmful to the gasification system and gas consuming equipment. For the development of tar removal method suitable to be applied in industrial use, it is necessary to seek out the optimal operating condition for tar cracking process. On a fixed-bed reactor, catalytic cracking of tar from pyrolysis of biomass, including rice straw, rice husk and wood chip, was investigated using limestone, dolomite and alumina brick as catalysts, and silicon carbide as an inert catalyst for thermal cracking. The effects of different catalysts on the variation of tar content in the gas, the gas composition and heating value, were investigated. Several factors that may influence the efficiency of the tar cracking process were studied for better catalytic effect. It reveals that tar removal efficiency rises with the cracking temperature from 600 to 900℃, reaching 60 percent in thermal cracking and above 90 percent in catalytic cracking at 900℃. When the gas residence time rises from 0.5 to 1 second, the tar removal efficiency increases about 7 to 10 percent. The gas composition changes greatly after the cracking process, with the gas heating value increased after thermal cracking and decreased after catalytic cracking.

Abstract:Biomass energy, as a renewable energy, has attracted more and more attention. Biomass energy has an important significance for the future sustainable development of the world's energy. Biomass gasification technology is one of the most effective biomass energy conversion methods which can well translate the biomass into the efficient fuel gas. However, the development of this technology is limited by biomass tar which is produced during the gasification process. The removal methods of tar in the biomass gasification process were summarized, and four kinds of catalysts applied in the process of catalytic cracking were mainly introduced and further classifies discussion was made on the composition, catalytic mechanism and modified optimization way of four kinds of catalysts, and the effects of different cracking condition on the catalytic result. The results showed an outlook for the development of biomass gasification technology and proposes future research emphasis of catalytic cracking.

Abstract:The existence of tar—a byproduct of coal gasification reduces the utilization value of gasifyed fuel gas. The affecting factors upon tar splitting decomposition, including kind of catalyzers, temperature of reaction, and time of retention etc., have been presented. Study shows that: the catalyzer has very big promoting effect for tar splitting decomposition; the temperature raising is beneficial for tar’s splitting decomposition reaction; increase of contact time is advantageous to reducing quantity of tar formation.

Abstract:The formation of biomass tar is one of the most serious drawbacks of gasification, because it not only clogs filters and pipelines, but also poses a serious threat to the environment. Tar abatement is indispensable for the commercialisation of gasification and the production of clean and renewable bio-energy. Microwave heating is an emerging method for tar treatment that provides several advantages, including high heating rates, volumetric heating, and thermochemical reaction acceleration. Although some success has been achieved in biomass tar treatment using microwave-based methods, systematic evaluation of these approaches is still required to achieve detailed understanding of these methods. In this review, the fundamental principles of microwave heating are introduced, and microwave effects, such as hot spots and microwave plasma, are described. The performance and mechanisms of in-situ and ex-situ microwave tar treatment processes are presented and compared. The energy consumption is carefully evaluated. Finally, application potential of these techniques is discussed by comparing with other tar treatments. This review focuses on the most recent reports of microwave-based tar treatment in the literature. It is hoped that this review will provide a foundation for, and new insights into, biomass tar treatment using microwaves.

Abstract:Tar in biomass product gas is a major problem because it reduces the reliability of the equipment and enhances pollutant emission. Partial oxidation is effective for reducing tar inside gasifiers. In order to predict tar reduction with partial oxidation technology, knowledge of the fate of tar during partial oxidation process is paramount.A continuous reactor was developed for tar destruction experiment under partial oxidation environment. Tar components and non-condensable gasses were measured and analyzed. Results show that the defined “primary tar” contents share about 60% of the total tar amounts. Phenolics prevail under initial reaction, but it is easy to form PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) by polymerization reactions under certain ER (actual mass flow rate of oxygen/oxygen required for complete oxidation of biomass feed stock). This process results in an increase of tertiary tar. Hydrogen's evolution curve shows a steep rise with ER, which could be an indicator for the crack of secondary tar. A model was developed for describing partial oxidation of tar. Phenol, toluene, benzene and naphthalene were chosen as model compounds. Fluid flow, chemical mechanism and heat transfer are considered in the model. The calculated total tar amounts are in qualitative agreement with experimental results.

Abstract:In this work, thermal behavior and gas emission characteristics of coal, different kinds of biomass chars, and their blends were evaluated by using the thermogravimetric analyzer coupled with a mass spectroscope. The chars were prepared from wheat straw at 300 degrees C and 500 degrees C under N-2 and CO2 atmosphere, respectively. The results show that the pyrolysis temperature has a greater effect on the combustion characteristics of biomass char than the pyrolysis atmosphere. NOx emissions were reduced effectively with the addition of biomass chars. The study also reveals that there is an obvious improvement in the combustion behavior of coal when blended with biomass chars.

Abstract:Tar measurement and calculation is crucial for understanding the in-situ tar elimination and hydrogen-rich syngas production during the biomass gasification process. In this study, the method of evaluating tar production was proposed and studied on a two-stage fixed-bed reactor. Two different groups of oxidized and reduced oxygen carriers were investigated for comparison. The collected tar was tested on a gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS) system. The types of the tar were all belonged to aromatic hydrocarbons. The H-2 composition in the syngas was over 34% in three reduced-OC conditions. The carbon percentage identified by the GC-MS was at the range of 93.75-95.05 wt%. The average carbon from the char combustion period was 2.85 mmol. The tar yield in the three oxidized-OC conditions was 43 +/- 22 mg/g, 53 +/- 11 mg/g, and 62 +/- 8 mg/g, respectively. The result indicated that the reduced OC had a catalytic effect for increasing the H-2 composition in syngas. On the other hand, the oxidized OC influenced the reactions by providing with lattice oxygen. The evaluation of the produced tar was beneficial for a further understanding of the mechanism for producing the H-2-rich syngas. (C) 2019 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Deoxygenation-based biomass gasification provides a feasible solution for the effective utilization of biomass and value-added syngas production. However, the behavior of bio-oil formation during the pyrolysis stage and the characteristics of tar abatement at the gasification stage with applied deoxidizer still require exploration. Thus, this study investigates the effects of different deoxidizer/biomass (D/B) mass ratios, pyrolysis-gasification temperatures, and water-injection velocities on the composition and yield of bio-oil and tar-elimination law. The techniques of 2D HSQC nuclear magnetic resonance, attenuated total reflectance, gel permeation chromatography, and gas chromatography-mass spectrometer are used to investigate the formation behavior and evolution law of the bio-oil produced. The results indicate that the addition of the deoxidizer not only improves the quality and yield of syngas but promotes the deoxygenation of oxygen-containing bio-oil by donating electrons. Specifically, the phenolic compounds decreased by 12.4% under D/B = 0.3 as compared with D/B = 0. The results also confirm the promoting effect of tar elimination via reforming and cracking by Fe and CaO, respectively: Tar production during the gasification stage decreased by 54% under D/B = 0.3, as compared with non-deoxygenation. This study demonstrates the superiority of iron-calcium-based deoxidizer in bio-oil deoxygenation and tar elimination, which will promote the development of deoxygenation-based bio-oil and syngas poly-generation.

Abstract:Tar, as a kind of by-product in biomass gasification processes, can adversely affect the efficiency of biomass utilization. Chemical-looping technology has been proposed as a novel way to reduce the tar yield in biomass treatment. As the second part of a two-part series work, the tar evolution characteristic during the biomass-derived chemical-looping gasification (CLG) process using bimetallic Cu-Fe oxides as oxygen carrier (OC) was investigated. The tar collected from batch fluidized bed experiment with Cu5Fe5 (50 mol.% CuO + 50 mol.% Fe2O3) as OC was first analyzed by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometer (GC-MS) to qualitatively determine the organic compounds contained. It was found that the relative molecular weight of the compounds was mostly concentrated at about 200. Subsequently, the effects of steam to biomass ratio (S/B, in weight), temperature, and oxygen carrier to biomass ratio (O/B, in weight) on tar reforming were investigated. The results indicated that the increase of temperature, S/B and O/B were all favorable for the decomposition and conversion of large molecular compounds in tar into small ones. In addition, quantitative analyses of the tar collected under the optimal conditions with different Cu-Fe mixed metal oxides as OCs were also conducted. It was found that the Cu composition in OC could promote the decomposition of small molecular compounds in tar, while the Fe composition was beneficial to decrease the yield of large molecular compounds in tar. Furthermore, synergistic reactivity of the bimetallic Cu-Fe OC was achieved for tar decomposition during the biomass-derived CLG process.

Abstract:Torrefaction is an effective method to improve the quality of biomass feedstocks for a subsequent thermal conversion process. Torrefaction has been widely developed for biomass upgrading in terms of increasing bulk and energy densities, reducing water and oxygen contents, and improving hydrophobic property, which are favorable for transportation and storage. Moreover, the torrefied biomass can be easily ground to even particle sizes, which favor downstream thermochemical conversion process such as gasification. This paper concludes the progress in the dry and wet torrefaction of biomass sources. Key findings and challenges of the torrefied biomass gasification are highlighted as well. In general, the properties of biomass feedstocks can be improved by the torrefaction process. Torrefaction for biomass gasification can improve the quality of syngas. In particular, gasification of torrefied biomass possesses a merit of volatile matters (tar precursors) removal prior to gasification process. The properties of torrefied biomass are significantly affected by the torrefaction conditions mainly including atmosphere, temperature, and pressure. The presence of appropriate oxygen gas shows a superior performance for biomass torrefaction. The oxygen-containing gas and the waste heat from industrial flue gas can be utilized to reduce the operating cost, thus making the biomass torrefaction pretreatment more commercially feasible.

Comparatively Investigation of Real MSW and Biomass Tar Treatment by a Rotating Gliding Arc

Abstract:Effective tar removal is the bottleneck in gasification application with municipal solid waste (MSW) and biomass as feedstocks. Herein, a rotating gliding arc plasma reactor equipped with a specific designed swirling generator and pre-heating systems is firstly proposed to treat real tar rather than tar surrogates. The composition of MSW and biomass tar is comparatively analyzed. The influence of vapor concentration, CO2 concentration and the discharge current on the destruction efficiency and distribution of gas products are systematically emphasized. The destruction efficiency of major components from both MSW and biomass tar can reach up to over 90%. The order of destruction efficiency of the components tends to be eta (Monocyclic species) > eta (Bicyclic species) >eta (Tricyclic species). Amongst, species with oxygen-containing functional group such as -OH is prone to be destructed compared with those aromatic hydrocarbon species. Similar changing trend of MSW and biomass tar destruction efficiency dependent on operating parameters is detected, with slight differences attributed to the differences of element and group content.

Abstract:For the abundant reserves and environmentally friendly characters of biomass energy, biomass gasification technology has a positive application in the rural area,especially biomass gasification for home-use.Primary coverage of this thesis is to research different biomass gasification characters,under the down-draft biomass gasification equipments.The research including temperature distribution,gasification efficiency,gas heat value and production,tar removal efficiency. Analysis showed that the gasification efficiency can reach up to 70%,gas low heat value is about 6 MJ/m~3,tar content can low to 20 mg/m~3.
