Abstract:This paper addresses the effect of the geometry of the inlet and the addition of a 90° bend at the end of the pipe in horizontal two-phase flow. The experimental study was supported by computational fluid dynamics (CFD), from both a qualitative and quantitative point of view. The experimental facility was comprised of a horizontal acrylic pipe (74-mm inner diameter and 7000-mm length), to promote flow development and visualize the flow for qualitative analysis ranging the liquid superficial velocity from 0.10 to 1.0 m/s and gas superficial velocity from 1.0 to 10.0 m/s capturing all two-phase flow regimes. Three inlet configurations which showed the greatest influence on the flow pattern formation were previously selected based on CFD analysis. In each experimental case, pressure data were acquired at three positions in the horizontal test section and four different flow patterns were identified in the experiments: the combinations of superficial velocities that resulted in stratified smooth for 1 m/s for air and 0.1 m/s for liquid, stratified wavy for 10 m/s for air and 0.1 m/s for liquid, plug flow for 1 m/s for air and 1 m/s for liquid and slug flow for 10 m/s for air and 0.55 m/s for liquid. In the qualitative analysis, it was observed that one inlet configuration promoted the transition to intermittent flow at different positions in the comparison to the other inlets. The quantitative analysis showed that the influence of different inlet and outlet geometries extends beyond changes in the flow pattern. Significant effects were also observed, for instance, on the maximum amplitude of the pressure signal and its prominent PSD frequency. In agreement with the qualitative analysis, one inlet presented significant differences in more experiments than the other inlets. However, the addition of the bend had a greater influence on the parameters studied than changing the inlet geometry.
