Abstract:In-situ surface-modified oil-soluble Cu nanoparticles and SiO2 nanoparticles readily dispersible in many kinds of lubricating oils were synthesized. The tribological properties of the nanoparticles as additives of lubricating oils were investigated using a four-ball friction and wear tester. The morphologies of the worn steel ball surfaces and elemental composition of protective film thereon were analyzed by means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and chemical analysis. Results indicate that Cu nanoparticles and Si02 nanoparticles as additives could effectively improve the friction-reducing and antiwear properties of base stocks, and they showed excellent synergism at a ratio of 0.30wt% nano-Cu to 0.25wt% nano-SiO2. Such a synergistic action of Cu and SiO2 nanoparticles as additives led to considerably improved antiwear and friction-reducing performance, which is mainly attributed to the formation of a chemical reaction boundary film consisting of metallic alloy and S- and P-containing inorganic and organic compounds.
