Abstract:Fatigue cracking is one of the main diseases that affect pavement durability. Understanding the relationship between the self-healing ability and fatigue life of asphalt materials from the molecular level will aid in the preventive maintenance and improvement of asphalt pavement. This work analyzes the research progress on the self-healing of asphalt and asphalt mixtures, including self-healing mechanism, influencing factors, evaluation methods, and improvement aspects. Factors affecting the self-healing performance are categorized as internal, such as molecular structure, asphalt motion and diffusion, asphalt viscoelasticity, and thixotropy, and external, such as humidity, temperature, induction conditions, and time. The self-healing performance can be adjusted by optimizing the chemical composition of the asphalt materials, changing the preparation method, and ensuring the spontaneous structure formation to achieve the intellectualization of the intrinsic material. This work sheds light on the design of materials and structures for durable pavement from the perspective of the self-healing behavior of asphalt materials. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Asphalt pavement with semi-rigid base is the major structure adopted in the new built highway and municipal roads in China. So as to reduce the unfavorable impact on the rehabilitation of municipal roads which require quick resumption of traffic, better base materials should be adopted. If a pavement base fails, the flexible base, i.e. large stone asphalt mixture (LSAM), should be employed in the pavement rehabilitation practice. Focusing on the practice pavement sections using LSAM as base in Hangzhou municipal roads, the effect factors of subgrade modulus, base modulus and base thickness on surface deflection and bending strain in base bottom is analyzed. That work is done through finite element method of software BISAR3.0. The results provide a practice reference for municipal roads rehabilitation needing to open traffic early.
Dynamic analysis of asphalt pavement with reflective cracking on the soft clay ground

Abstract:In the paper, the vehicle load is simplified as sine distributed function,the behaviors of the soft clay ground and the composite foundation obey elastic-plastic yield criterion of DRUCKER-PRAGER model. Based on the theory of dynamic mechanics, linear elastic fracture mechanics and elastic-plasticity mechanics, the asphalt pavement with reflective crack is analyzed under the single cyclic moving load using the FEM of plane strain. In order to compute the stress intensity factor (SIF), singular element is placed near the crack tip. The performances of the pavement are discussed under different material damping ratios of the pavement, the resilient elastic modulus, cohesion, internal friction angle and the thickness of the composite foundation through the maximum displacement in the asphalt pavement surface, the top surface of the composite foundation, the top surface of the soft clay ground and the dynamic SIF in the crack tip.

Abstract:It has been reported that the pavement performance predicted by the current mechanistic-empirical pavement design shows low or no sensitivity to subgrade and unbound layers. This issue has raised wide attention. Targeting this problem, this paper summarizes the process used by the authors to find better models of the influence of subgrade and unbound base course layers on the performance of flexible and rigid pavements. A comprehensive literature review is first conducted and the findings are categorized. It is found that the resilient modulus, permanent deformation, shear strength, and erosion are key factors. In particular, the properties that provide greater sensitivity are (1) the moisture-dependency of the modulus, shear strength, and permanent deformation; (2) stress-dependency of the modulus and permanent deformation; and (3) cross-anisotropy of the modulus. A number of unbound layer/subgrade models have been located and categorized. Three criteria are developed to identify the candidate models in terms of the degree of susceptibility, degree of accuracy, and ease of development. The first two criteria are used to evaluate the collected unbound layer/subgrade models, while associated development and implementation issues are planned as subsequent work. Two models that the authors previously developed are selected as examples to illustrate the improvement of the performance prediction, including the moisture-sensitive, stress-dependent, and cross-anisotropic modulus model for unbound layers and stress-dependent mechanistic-empirical permanent deformation model for unbound base layers. These two models are verified through laboratory tests and numerical simulations. Moreover, they are compared to their counterparts in the AASHTOWare Pavement ME Design. The advantages of accuracy and sensitivity to the operational conditions (e.g. moisture, traffic stress, and load-induced/particle-induced anisotropy) are obvious. In addition to these two models, the development of the shear strength model and erosion model are sketched. The candidate models need further development and implementation, which address issues such as hierarchical inputs, calibration/validation, and implementation. These are the on-going and planned work on this topic to better incorporate the influence of subgrade and unbound layers so as to contribute to the improvement of pavement designs.

Abstract:In recent years, due to the increasing traffic volume and the serious deterioration of overloading, the heavy vehicle load has emerged, leading to the more and more common early damage of asphalt pavement, and overloading has become one of the important factors endangering the pavement. The traditional method is to strengthen the road, but as the base course and asphalt pavement thickness are both improved, TOP-DOWN fissures and ruts on the asphalt pavement surface have emerged as the most prevalent form of asphalt pavement damage. However, a final verdict on a single mechanical explanation for the many occurrences of asphalt pavement deterioration has not yet been reached. Material yielding and failure under varying stress conditions are the focus of strength theory, which seeks to provide norms and standards for their computation. Mohr Coulomb and Drucker Prager strength theories are two of the most well-established, thoroughly investigated, and widely used strength theories in geological and geotechnical engineering. In this research, the damage form and stress condition of asphalt pavement are analyzed and predicted using M-C and D-P criteria, and a new pavement structure damage control index, the Asphalt pavement potential damage index with fatigue loading (APPDI), is established. Preliminary calculations reveal that APPDI may become a unified mechanical assessment index of asphalt pavement structural damage, since it can explain both flexural tensile damage at the base of the layer and rutting and cracking at the surface.

Abstract:The durability of pavement subgrade materials is the most important indicator for judging their merits as well as their mechanical properties. The durability of pavement subgrade material is mainly reflected in its water stability, because in the actual pavement environment, the subgrade is subjected to the infiltration of groundwater, immersion and the washout of pressure water under the concrete slab. The subgrade is subjected to a series of damage caused by freeze-thaw cycles and wet-dry cycles due to changes in temperature. In view of this, this chapter has targeted. In view of this, this chapter focuses on the frost resistance, water stability, scour resistance, dry shrinkage and sulfate erosion resistance of iron tailings as pavement base material. The study is carried out to simulate the real situation as much as possible to provide more detailed and accurate guidance for the actual engineering application. Abstract:Through laboratory experiment,the technical indexes of conventional asphalt and modified asphalt are tested,and the anti-wear performance,high-temperature anti-rut performance,low-temperature anti-cracking performance of the asphalt mixture are analyzed.The results show that with the modifier increasing,penetration, softening point and ductility of asphalt are all improved.Because the anti-wear performance,anti-rut performance and anti-cracking performance of micro-surfacing asphalt mixture are better than the conventional asphalt mixture, microsurfacing mixture has good road performance,and can effectively extend the service life of pavement.

Abstract:Asphalt pavement, with its good mechanical properties, durability, driving comfort, and aesthetic environmental protection, is suitable for various vehicles to pass through, and has solid, durable, flat, and good anti-skid, anti-seepage, fatigue resistance, and high-temperature cracking resistance. However, due to various reasons, early damage to asphalt pavement often occurs, which has been listed as one of the common problems in highway engineering quality, demonstrating its universality and severity. Abstract:Dust, sediment, and stone chips often block the rainwater-infiltration paths of permeable pavements, which, in conjunction with vehicle load, reduces drainage capacity. To restore this capacity, a reasonable maintenance time and suitable maintenance measures must be determined. Therefore, we investigated the void attenuation and decline in drainage capacity of permeable asphalt pavements under the combined action of dust blockage and vehicle load. First, the water seepage coefficient decay and the decay rate under blocking and compaction were determined via clogging and compaction experiments. Second, experimental data were incorporated into an entropy–analytic hierarchy process analysis model, with the gross domestic product ratio, wind scale, and maximum five-year rainfall for the area. Finally, three test roads were studied as the weight to rank the maintenance urgency and predict the maintenance timing for each road under different rainfall conditions. The results demonstrate that the drainage capacity of permeable pavements obeys the parabolic exponential attenuation law. From the findings regarding road water storage capacity, the latest pavement maintenance time at different rainfall levels were obtained. This predicted maintenance time enables better decisions than regular time on code, which is the effect of drainage caused by multiple factors.
