Abstract:Asphalt pavement with semi-rigid base is the major structure adopted in the new built highway and municipal roads in China. So as to reduce the unfavorable impact on the rehabilitation of municipal roads which require quick resumption of traffic, better base materials should be adopted. If a pavement base fails, the flexible base, i.e. large stone asphalt mixture (LSAM), should be employed in the pavement rehabilitation practice. Focusing on the practice pavement sections using LSAM as base in Hangzhou municipal roads, the effect factors of subgrade modulus, base modulus and base thickness on surface deflection and bending strain in base bottom is analyzed. That work is done through finite element method of software BISAR3.0. The results provide a practice reference for municipal roads rehabilitation needing to open traffic early.

Abstract:Fatigue cracking is one of the main diseases that affect pavement durability. Understanding the relationship between the self-healing ability and fatigue life of asphalt materials from the molecular level will aid in the preventive maintenance and improvement of asphalt pavement. This work analyzes the research progress on the self-healing of asphalt and asphalt mixtures, including self-healing mechanism, influencing factors, evaluation methods, and improvement aspects. Factors affecting the self-healing performance are categorized as internal, such as molecular structure, asphalt motion and diffusion, asphalt viscoelasticity, and thixotropy, and external, such as humidity, temperature, induction conditions, and time. The self-healing performance can be adjusted by optimizing the chemical composition of the asphalt materials, changing the preparation method, and ensuring the spontaneous structure formation to achieve the intellectualization of the intrinsic material. This work sheds light on the design of materials and structures for durable pavement from the perspective of the self-healing behavior of asphalt materials. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:The actual lifetimes of many highways are lower than that expected based on the initial pavement design, which brings increasingly prohibitive costs of pavement maintenance and repair. Although many works have been done, the real service lifetimes are still disappointing, and the researchers are also trying their best to increase the projects’ life span. In this study, to comprehensively predict the durability and lifetime of newly designed asphalt mixture structures, an asphalt pavement project consisting of three hot mix asphalt (HMA) mixtures were evaluated. The mixtures were constructed in the pavement project of the Weiwu expressway in Gansu Province. Pavement properties of the asphalt mixtures, rutting and temperature fatigue factors of the dynamic modulus are discussed. The fatigue resistance is supposed to improve on increasing the vehicles’ speed below the freezing point, which may be more suitable for applications in expressways. Meanwhile, the lifetime is measured according to the number of fatigue axle loads calculated, which were corrected between the specimens in the lab and the field core samples. Durability analysis prediction can be obtained based on the fatigue lifetime predictive model accordingly, which can provide more information about the fatigue lifetime and the rehabilitation planning of existing pavements in the future accordingly.

Design of a Novel Road Pavement Using Steel and Plastics to Enhance Performance, Durability and Construction Efficiency

Abstract:Durability is one important problem that pavement engineers need to address in pavement’s long service life. Furthermore, easily recycled pavement materials, and safe and efficient pavement construction are also important areas for development in road engineering. For these reasons, a new asphalt steel plastic (ASP) pavement structure was proposed with an asphalt mixture forming the surface layer, and steel plate and plastic materials functioning as the main load-bearing layers. Based on a comprehensive performance review and cost-benefit analysis, stone mastic asphalt (SMA) is recommended to be used as the surface layer; and A656 steel plate and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) plastic materials should be the main load-bearing layer, on top of a foundation layer made with graded crushed stones. A glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) insulation layer is recommended for use between the steel plate and ABS. Mechanical properties of the ASP pavement were analyzed using the finite element method. Laboratory tests were conducted to verify the thermal insulation performance of GFRP, the high-temperature stability and the fatigue resistance of ASP pavement. Results show that some of the mechanical properties of ASP pavement (with a structure of 80 mm SMA asphalt mixture, 8 mm steel plate, 140 mm ABS and 200 mm crushed stones) are comparable with conventional long-life pavement (with 350 mm asphalt layer overlaying 400 mm graded crushed stones). Dynamic stability of the ASP slab specimens can reach 10,000 times/mm, and the fatigue life is about twice that of SMA. Besides, the ASP pavement can be prefabricated and assembled on-site, and thus can greatly improve construction efficiency. From the lifecycle perspective, ASP pavement has many advantages over traditional pavements, such as durability, lower environmental footprint and recyclability, making it is worth further research.

A Design Method on Durable Asphalt Pavement of Flexible Base on Anti-Rutting Performance and Its Application

Abstract:To solve the durability of flexible base asphalt pavement, especially its anti-rutting problem, a design method on durable asphalt pavement of flexible base on anti-rutting performance was put forward in the paper, based on many experiments and calculations. Firstly, a method that asphalt could be selected according to penetration and the anti-rutting factor of its base asphalt was found, which solved the problem of the asphalt selection of the flexible base asphalt mixture design. Meanwhile, a method of skeleton-density structure gradation design was proposed based on the fractal void ratio of coarse aggregate, fractal volume of fine aggregate in coarse aggregate, penetration, fractal dimension of gradation particle size, and rutting tests, which effectively solved in advance the rutting and fatigue performance of flexible base asphalt mixtures. Then, on the basis of the fatigue damage, a calculation method of fatigue life was suggested, which solved the problem that the fatigue damage of asphalt mixtures rarely considered the combined effects of creep damage and fatigue damage. In addition, a calculation method of rutting was formulated based on vehicle dynamic load and ANSYS 16.0 software. Lastly, the feasibility of the design method on durable asphalt pavement of flexible base on anti-rutting performance was verified combining with the real engineering of a supporting project and several numerical calculations and tests.
Feasibility Evaluation of a Long-Life Asphalt Pavement for Steel Bridge Deck

Abstract:In order to extend the service life of the steel bridge deck pavement, a long-life steel bridge deck pavement (LLSBDP) was put forward referring to the concept of long-life asphalt pavement. First, the requirements of the LLSBDP were given, based on which, an LLSBDP structure “EAC + SMA” was proposed. Second, a numerical analysis was performed to evaluate the stress status of the “EAC + SMA” structure. Third, an experimental study was conducted to assess the performance of the pavement material and the pavement structure. Meanwhile, for comparison, the performances of traditional steel bridge deck pavement structure “EAC + EAC” were also studied in the numerical and experimental program. The results showed that, with periodical rehabilitation or reconstruction of the SMA surface layer, the EAC base layer can last for a long life without structural distresses. The proposed structure can meet the requirements of LLSBDP and can be used to extend the service life of the steel bridge deck pavement.

Abstract:An unanticipated sideeffect of China’s developing economy was the increase in heavy road trafficvehicles utilizing high pressure tires on both new and old infrastructure.Today the extent of rutting has become one of the main forms of asphalt road surfacebreakage. To improve the robustness and high temperature properties of roadsurfacing asphalt, a new high-modulus material has been developed and used tomodify normal road petroleum asphalt. The results from laboratory experimentsconducted at the Jiangsu Baoli Asphalt Co., LTD and real road trials inPeople's Democratic Republic of Algeria, Shanghai, Shanxi and Jiangsu provincein China, indicate that the high-modulus asphalt performed significantly betterat higher-temperatures when compared to samples of more commonly used asphaltmixtures. The high-modulus additive (No. ZQ-1) was prepared in Jiangsu BaoliAsphalt Co. LTD, and the basic production process, the basic properties as wellas the effection to base bitumen was analysed in the paper. And the DynamicStability was evaluated using an automated rut-depth measuring system. Thewater stability and low temperature properties were also discussed. Themodified asphalt material has comparable storage and usage costs to existingutilized asphalts though with enhanced high-temperature properties.
Investigation on the Preparation and Performances of Epoxy-Modified Asphalt Binder and Its Mixtures

Abstract:Epoxy-modified asphalt binder has been widely used in steel deck pavement due to its excellent properties and it is a potential candidate for long life pavements. However, its short reserve time limits its widespread application in pavement engineering. Therefore, this work developed a novel epoxy-modified asphalt binder composed of a laboratory-made curing agent as a solution. Firstly, optimization of preparation temperature of this new material was studied to balance the requirements of enough construction time and the material strength and elongation. The epoxy-modified asphalt binder, prepared at the optimal temperature of 140 °C, had a reserve time exceeding 120 min, whereas the tensile strength and the elongation at failure were 2.22 MPa and 216%, respectively, which satisfied the standard requirements of paving epoxy material well. Secondly, the asphalt mixture property tests demonstrate excellent high-temperature rutting resistance, water stability and low-temperature anti-cracking ability. Additionally, the compatibility and colloidal stability of this epoxy-modified asphalt binder were analyzed in terms of microphase structure. The uniform microphase distribution of this binder showed by the laser confocal microscope observation in both short-term aging case and long-term aging case, indicates the great compatibility between asphalt and epoxy resin during paving process and service life. Furthermore, fatigue tests were conducted to evaluate the long-term durability. The fatigue life of epoxy-modified asphalt mixtures increased by 435%, 427%, 342%, and 276% under the stress ratios of 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, and 0.6, respectively, compared to those of SBS-modified asphalt mixtures. All these results indicate that the new epoxy-modified asphalt material is promising for applications in pavement engineering, especially suitable for long-life road pavement.

Abstract:The purpose of asphalt pavement structural design is to get a materially-coordinated and structurally-durable product, and a pavement structure with good road performance by combining the structural layer materials reasonably. However, due to lack of a rational evaluation index on the parameter combinations of structural layer materials, the structural layer materials are poor in terms of coordination, have low efficiency, and the actual use period is much lower than the designed working life. Therefore, it is very important to conduct research evaluating the coordination of the structural layer materials. In this study, the sensitivity of mechanical parameters and equivalent envelope area are proposed as new indexes to evaluate the coordination of material design of asphalt pavement structure layers. Software is developed to calculate the equivalent envelope area that can quantitatively evaluate the coordination among different layers and visualize the mechanical transfer behavior of each structural layer. Based on the equivalent envelope area index, this study incorporates two new steps in the design of pavements, namely the structural form comparison and optimization, and proposes a new structural design process. Finally, the rationality and reliability of the equivalent envelope area index are verified by presenting fatigue life calculation and field verification in a test road. The results propose a clear evaluation index of the coordination of material design of each structural layer, which makes the structural design of the asphalt pavement more scientific and reasonable.

Abstract:Increasing the HMA base thickness and modifying the HMA mixture properties to improve the resistance to fatigue cracking are among the most popular methods for achieving long-lasting pavements. Such methods are based on the idea of reducing the tensile strain at the bottom of the HMA layer below the Fatigue Endurance Limit (FEL), a level of strain below which no cumulative damage occurs to the HMA mixture. This study investigates the effectiveness of several design strategies involved in long-life, perpetual pavement design. A 3D Finite Element model of the pavement involving a linear viscoelastic constitutive model for HMA materials and non-uniform tire contact stresses is developed using ABAQUS 6.11. The effects of asphalt base course thickness and mixture type, rich binder layer, and aggregate subbase layer are examined. Four asphalt base course mixture types, namely dense graded, polymer modified, high modulus, and standard binder, are studied as a function of the asphalt base course thickness. The results underline a better performance of the high-modulus asphalt base, as compared to the other base course mixtures. The aggregate subbase layer on top of subgrade soil showed a relatively minor effect on the longitudinal and lateral strain response at the bottom of asphalt base course. The addition of a rich binder layer at the bottom of the asphalt base course showed a significant reduction in tensile strains. Tables are provided as a guideline to assess the different alternatives in design of long-life perpetual pavements.
Eco-efficiency assessment of long-life asphalt pavement technologies

Abstract:This paper presents a comprehensive eco-efficiency assessment for six promising long-life asphalt pavement (LLAP) designs as a structural system, including the full-depth ( FD ), thick asphalt layer ( TAL ), inverted ( Ive ), enhanced semi-rigid base ( Esemi ), composite ( CP ) and traditional semi-rigid base ( Tsemi ) asphalt pavement. Results showed that under the baseline design scenario, the Ive , ESemi and CP perform best in terms of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, total embodied energy (TEE), and life-cycle cost (LCC), respectively. In most cases of the scenario and uncertainty analyses, ESemi and Ive were the most eco-efficient solutions, although CP may dominate ESemi for a longer design life, whereas the other three designs were dominated by one or more of the abovementioned designs. Among all life-cycle activities, the raw material phase was proved to be the most critical source of GHG (54.2–79.4 %), TEE (41.8–54.9 %), and LCC (72.0–72.9 %), under the system boundary of cradle-to-grave (excluding operation phase). Striking a balance between the thickness of cement-based and asphalt structural layers is the key to achieving sustainable pavement.

Abstract:Porous asphalt (PA) is a distinct mixture type that deliberately designed with stone-on-stone contact of the coarse aggregate fraction and high percentage of interconnected air voids to provide water drainage and adequate resistance to both raveling and permanent deformation. During the past decades, PA has attracted much attention in the worldwide. Many studies have been conducted to confirm numerous benefits in terms of safety, comfort and environment. However, the acceptance of PA appears to have some sort of diminished when defects with durability and winter maintenance became a serious practical issue and overtaken by environmental concerns in recent years. Now this dilemma seems to be partially improved, several limitations have gradually ameliorated due to the progress of materials and test methods. While some additional problems are also exposed in the meantime. Therefore, it is necessary to present a comprehensive review of existing research to clarify the challenges that currently being encountered. The content of this article mainly includes international experience and four important aspects of PA mixture design, as well as the favorable contributing factors affecting each design process. In different sections, achievements including the advantages and shortcomings in each branch have been discussed and suggestions also have been put forward expecting to identify corresponding areas of study for future improvement, thus provide references for the next phase of field application of PA pavement.

Assessment of Pavement Structural Conditions and Remaining Life Combining Accelerated Pavement Testing and Ground-Penetrating Radar

Abstract:The inspection and monitoring of structural conditions are crucial for the maintenance of semi-rigid base pavement. To achieve the inverse calculation of material parameters and obtain the mechanical response of asphalt pavement, a method of modulus correction by reducing the error between tested and simulated strains was first developed. The relationship between the temperature at various depths within the pavement structure and atmospheric temperature was effectively demonstrated using a dual sinusoidal regression model. Subsequently, pavement monitoring data illustrated that as loading weight and temperature increased and loading speed decreased, the three-way strain of the asphalt layer increased. Thus, the relationship model between loading conditions and three-way strain was established with a good fitting degree (R2 > 0.95). The corrected modulus was obtained by approximating the error between simulated and measured strains. Then, the finite element analysis was performed to calculate key mechanical index values under various working conditions and predict the fatigue life of asphalt and base layers. Finally, ground-penetrating radar (GPR) detection was performed, and the internal pavement condition index was defined for quantitative assessment of structure conditions. The results show that there is a good correlation between the internal pavement condition index (IPCI) and remaining life of pavement structure. Therefore, our works solve the problems of the parameter reliability of pavement structures and quantitative assessment for structural conditions, which could support the performance prediction and maintenance analysis on asphalt pavement with a semi-rigid base.

Designation Principle and Method for Functionally Graded Composite Pavement

Abstract:Pavement is the main structure of road engineering, which consists of multiple structural and functional layers. During the service period, pavement should simultaneously meet the requirements of durability, driving safety and comfort under the combined effects of vehicle load, water and environment temperature. Normally, the design lives for asphalt pavement and concrete pavement are 12-15 and 20-30 years separately. The concept of perpetual pavement had been proposed in recent twenty years, which requires that pavement can resist structural fatigue distress for a long time (at least 50 years). Therefore, the service life and performance of the present asphalt pavement is far from meeting the requirements of perpetual pavement. The reason is not only the raw material and construction quality issues, but also that the existing design theory and design index cannot meet the needs of perpetual pavement design. In addition, the integrating design principles of material-structure-construction had also not been effectively implemented during the pavement design and construction. At present, as to the short design life, the requirements of mechanical properties and fatigue lives of existing pavement materials within the effect of repeated loading can be easily qualified. In order to achieve the perpetual pavement's design life, a new theoretical framework of pavement design may provide the potential solution. Therefore, in this study, the concept of the functionally graded composite pavement was proposed based on the definition of functionally graded materials, which consisted of structural layers with various stiffness. The functionally graded composite pavement could be realized by eliminating the weak adhesion between layers and optimizing the structural response of pavement. Firstly, the types and mechanisms of asphalt pavement cracking were analyzed based on the structural damage characteristics and developments of asphalt pavement, and the effects of the pavement material composition characteristics and the layered structural interfacial state on the cracking mechanisms were then clarified. Secondly, different from the popular elastic layered theory of asphalt pavement, the design theory and design method of the functionally graded composite pavement were proposed. The structural combination and design process of the functionally graded composite pavement were also recommended. Then the technical solutions, which include the development of high-performance functional composite materials and the good layered treatment to eliminate the interface effects, were proposed in order to realize the functionally graded composite pavement. Finally. bridge deck pavements on field concrete bridge and steel bridge were introduced to be as the case study of the functionally graded composite pavement. By employing new pavement materials and improving the interfacial mechanical behaviors. the functionally graded composite pavement on the concrete and steel bridge deck performs well in the service life. When comes to the future of the functionally graded composite pavement, as to the development and widely application of 3D printing technology, the functionally graded pavement with multiple functional, interfaceless and continuous stiffness graded layers could be more easily realized. It can be expected that a potential Chinese solution to realize the perpetual pavement could be presented and the service life of the pavement will be prolonged as to the application of the functionally graded pavement.

Analysis of Interface Behaviors and Permanent Deformation of Asphalt Pavement under Periodic Load

Abstract:To improve the capability of resistance to interface shear strength and permanent deformation of semi-rigid base asphalt pavement,the shear stress distribution between different layers,and the evolution law of permanent deformation of pavement as well were analyzed with finite element model based on viscoelasticity mechanics.The results indicate interfacial shear stress between asphalt layers decreases,but the interface shear stress between asphalt layer and base increases duo to the viscoelasticity behaviors of asphalt layer.The variety rate of the maximum interface shear stress value between different layers under static load as the loading time is bigger compared with the dynamic load on account of revertible process.There is a higher upheaval deformation in the place of clearance of the double wheels compared with the outsides of wheel,and a bigger permanent deformation of bottom asphalt concrete layer compared with top asphalt layer.The maximum creep strain appears under the top asphalt concrete layer respectively in both places of the center of wheel and the clearance of the double wheels,whereas the depth where the maximum creep strain is located in the place of clearance of the double wheels is bigger than that in the place of center of wheel.The studies we have performed suggest that interface bonding behaviors between asphalt layer and base,and resistance to permanent deformation under the top asphalt concrete layer should be taken into account adequately in the designing of semi-rigid base asphalt pavement.

Abstract:The durability of pavement subgrade materials is the most important indicator for judging their merits as well as their mechanical properties. The durability of pavement subgrade material is mainly reflected in its water stability, because in the actual pavement environment, the subgrade is subjected to the infiltration of groundwater, immersion and the washout of pressure water under the concrete slab. The subgrade is subjected to a series of damage caused by freeze-thaw cycles and wet-dry cycles due to changes in temperature. In view of this, this chapter has targeted. In view of this, this chapter focuses on the frost resistance, water stability, scour resistance, dry shrinkage and sulfate erosion resistance of iron tailings as pavement base material. The study is carried out to simulate the real situation as much as possible to provide more detailed and accurate guidance for the actual engineering application. Design of Widening Asphalt Pavement in Expressway

Abstract:Aiming at characteristics and special service conditions of certain engineering of widening expressway,performance experiments of types of asphalt mixture for trial sections are carried out.The results indicate that types of asphalt mixture can be further optimized.Based on above research,correctional AC-16 and AC-20 gradation are recommended,the gradations are more excellent than that of trail sections by experiments and economical analyses.In the terms of the overlay time after widening engineering,pavement structure of the widening engineering is recommended.

Abstract:The assessment of asphalt pavement structures with diversified designs and constructions has been a critical challenge due to the practical limitations in testing and methodology. Here, we propose a complex network approach to the evaluation of longitudinal asphalt pavement performances in the Research Institute of Highway Ministry of Transport track (RIOHTrack). We add to the growing field in which network approaches are employed and indicate the profound application in understanding pavement structures. Specifically, similar and disparate pavement performances are revealed regardless of their predefined design and construction categories. Evidence shows that short-term pavement performance depends on the strength of the subbase structure, whereas long-term performance relies on the thickness of the asphalt layer. In addition, our results indicate that recycling materials could be an important substitute for reducing the thickness of asphalt concrete and maintaining a healthy service life.
