Abstract:Purpose: The feasibility and efficacy of intraoperative ultrasonography(IOUS) in the cool-tip radio-frequency ablation(RFA) of hepatic carcinoma was evaluated.Materials and Methods: 31 patients of hepatic carcinoma were enrolled in this study.In the process of opensurgical cool-tip radio-frequency ablations,intraoperative ultrasonography was applied to assess the hepatic lesions,to guide and to monitor the process of RFA in real-time.Results: Under the guidance of intraoperative ultrasonography,the open surgical RFA in all patients proceed smoothly.Seven additional hepatic masses were found that were not detected in preoperative imaging.A false positive focal lesion reported by preoperative MRI was accurately ruled out by IOUS.Conclusion: Intraoperative ultrasonography is superior to ordinary imaging techniques in finding missed lesions,avoiding complications such as injuries of bile ducts and vessels,and in monitoring in real-time the RFA process thereby obviously optimizing the treatment of hepatic carcinoma.

Abstract:Objective To study the value of the clinical application of intraoperative ultrasound (IOUS) with cool-tip radiofrequency(RF) in carcinoma. Methods Intraoperative ultrasonography was applied in 48 patients with hepatic tumor and 5 patients with pancreatic tumor. Intraoperative probe was put on the surface of the viscera directly,and the location,volume,number and adjoining vessels of tumors were observe. After the biopsy,the radiofrequency electrode was placed into tumor under the guidance of IOUS,then the multi-stage and multi-point treatment were performed. Results All of the 53 patients completed their therapies under the guidance of IOUS,and new focus were found by IOUS in 5 cases. Forty-six patients survived in 2 ～ 12 months in following up after treatment. Conclusion The application of laparotomic cool-tip RF under guidance of IOUS has the advantages of accurate locallization,safty and multistage and multipoint inactivation of the tumor tissue with lager necrotic area. Furthermore the intraoperative ultrasound could compensate the disadvantages of preoperational imaging,discover the misdiagnostic focus and result in treatment in time.

Abstract:Objective To evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of intraoperative laparoscopic ultrasonography(ILU) in the radiofrequency ablation(RFA) of hepatic carcinoma.Methods Thirty-one patients with hepatic carcinoma were enrolled in this study.In the process of RFA,ILU was applied to guide the RFA needle and to monitor the process of RFA in real-time.Results Under the guidance of ILU,the percutaneous RFA in all patients proceed smoothly.Seven additional masses at the liver diaphragmatic that were missed in preoperative ultrasound but reported by preoperative CT or MRI top were detected.Three small lesions were not detected in preoperative imaging.A false positive focal lesion was ruled out accurately.Thirty-one cases of liver cancer patients underwent laparoscopic surgery without intraoperative death,postoperative infection,haemorrhage or other complications.Five cases had transient fever,four had nausea and three had mild abdominal pain.Patients were followed up for six months with no recurrence.Conclusions ILU has certain advantages to routine ultrasound in observing conventional blind area and detecting missed lesions preoperatively.ILU is also helpful for assisting the percutaneous RFA treatment in patients that are unable to detect or locate by preoperative ultrasound and intolerant to routine surgery.
Interventional Real-Time Optical Imaging Guidance for Complete Tumor Ablation

Abstract:The aim of this study was to develop an interventional optical imaging (OI) technique for intraprocedural guidance of complete tumor ablation. Our study employed four strategies: 1) optimizing experimental protocol of various indocyanine green (ICG) concentrations/detection time windows for ICG-based OI of tumor cells (ICG cells); 2) using the optimized OI to evaluate ablation-heat effect on ICG cells; 3) building the interventional OI system and investigating its sensitivity for differentiating residual viable tumors from nonviable tumors; and 4) preclinically validating its technical feasibility for intraprocedural monitoring of radiofrequency ablations (RFAs) using animal models with orthotopic hepatic tumors. OI signal-to-background ratios (SBRs) among preablation tumors, residual, and ablated tumors were statistically compared and confirmed by subsequent pathology. The optimal dose and detection time window for ICG-based OI were 100 μg/mL at 24 h. Interventional OI displayed significantly higher fluorescence signals of viable ICG cells compared with nonviable ICG cells (189.3 ± 7.6 versus 63.7 ± 5.7 au, P < 0.001). The interventional OI could differentiate three definitive zones of tumor, tumor margin, and normal surrounding liver, demonstrating significantly higher average SBR of residual viable tumors compared to ablated nonviable tumors (2.54 ± 0.31 versus 0.57 ± 0.05, P < 0.001). The innovative interventional OI technique permitted operators to instantly detect residual tumors and thereby guide repeated RFAs, ensuring complete tumor eradication, which was confirmed by ex vivo OI and pathology. In conclusion, we present an interventional oncologic technique, which should revolutionize the current ablation technology, leading to a significant advancement in complete treatment of larger or irregular malignancies.
Sonography-Guided Percutaneous Microwave Ablation of Intrahepatic Primary Cholangiocarcinoma

Abstract:Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of sonography-guided percutaneous microwave ablation of intrahepatic primary cholangiocarcinoma.Materials and methods: From May 2006 to March 2010, 15 patients (11 men, 4 women; mean age, 57.4 years) with 24 histologically proven intrahepatic primary cholangiocarcinoma lesions (mean tumor size, 3.2 +/- 1.9 cm; range, 1.3-9.9 cm) were treated with microwave ablation.Results: Thirty-eight sessions were performed for 24 nodules in 15 patients. The follow-up period was 4-31 months (mean, 12.8 +/- 8.0 months). The ablation success rate, the technique effectiveness rate, and the local tumor progression rate were 91.7% (22/24), 87.5% (21/24), and 25% (6/24) respectively according to the results of follow-up. The cumulative overall 6, 12, 24 month survival rates were 78.8%, 60.0%, and 60.0%, respectively. Major complication occurred including liver abscess in two patients (13.3%) and needle seeding in one patient (6.7%). Both complications were cured satisfied with antibiotic treatment combined to catheter drainage for abscess and resection for needle seeding. The minor complications and side effects were experienced by most patients which subsided with supportive treatment.Conclusion: Microwave ablation can be used as a safe and effective technique to treat intrahepatic primary cholangiocarcinoma. Abstract:Objective To investigate the role of intraoperative ultrasonography in radiofrequency ablation(RFA) for renal tumors.Methods A total of 82 consecutive patients with renal tumors underwent ultrasound-guided RFA,of whom 22 patients underwent open radiofrequency abalation and 60 patients underwent laparoscopic radiofrequency abalation.Intraoperative ultrasonography was applied to evaluate the renal lesions and guide the process of RFA.ResultsTherapeutic procedures were performed successfully in all patients.A complete ablation was achieved in 81 patients.A residual tumor in one patient was confirmed by review,who was given oral sunitinib daily thereafter.Conclusion In the radiofrequency abalation surgery for renal tumors,intraoperative ultrasonography takes a key role in selecting the suitable extent of ablation and protecting the normal kidney.

Abstract:Objective To evaluate the ultrasonography in the cool-tip radio-frequency ablation of hepatic neoplasms.Methods The pre-operative ultrasound images of 105 cases of hepatic neoplasm werr analyzed,on the basis of which the treatment strategies were established.During the period of procedures including percutaneous or open surgical radio-frequency ablations,ultrasonography was applied as the imaging-guided method.Ultrasound examinations were fulfilled 1 week and 1 month after treatments.Result The preoperative ultrasonography had an important role on the choice of treatment strategies.Without question sonography is the most common method used to guide radio frequency ablation.The advantages and disadvantages of the percutaneous and intraoperative ultrasonography are quite different,which will determine the choice of approach.Although the images of the postoperative cases were variable,the blood flows of the neoplasms werr disappeared or decreased obviously detected by CDE.Conclusion Ultrasonography is a useful method in the cool-tip radio-frequency ablation of hepatic neoplasms.Moreover,the applications of ultrasound in the entire procedure is beneficial to making the cool-tip radio-frequency ablation safer and more effective.
Percutaneous Ultrasound-Guided Thermal Ablation for Intrahepatic Cholangiocarcinoma.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to evaluate the treatment efficacy and overall survival (OS) of percutaneous ultrasound-guided thermal ablation by means of microwave ablation or radiofrequency ablation for intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC). METHODS 18 patients with 25 ICC nodules underwent ultrasound-guided thermal ablation with curative intention. 8 patients were primary cases and 10 were recurrent cases after curative resection. The local treatment response, complications and survivals were analysed. RESULTS Complete ablation was achieved in 23 (92.0%, 23/25) nodules (diameter, 0.7-4.3 cm; mean, 2.5 ± 0.9 cm) and incomplete ablation was found in 2 (8.0%, 2/25) larger tumours (6.4 and 6.9 cm in diameter). No death associated with the treatment was found. The major complication rate was 5.5% (1/18). The follow-up periods ranged from 1.3 to 86.2 months (mean, 20.5 ± 26.3 months; median, 8.7 months). OS rates for all patients at 6, 12, 36 and 60 months were 66.7%, 36.3%, 30.3% and 30.3%, respectively. By univariate analysis, the patient source (primary or recurrent case) was found to be a significant prognostic factor for OS rates (p=0.001). The patient source (p=0.001) and the number of nodules (p=0.038) were found to be significant prognostic factors for recurrence-free survival. OS rates for the primary ICC at 6, 12, 36 and 60 months were 87.5%, 75.0%, 62.5% and 62.5%, respectively. CONCLUSION Percutaneous ultrasound-guided thermal ablation is a safe and effective therapeutic technique for ICC. Acceptable survival can be achieved in primary ICCs, whereas the prognosis of recurrent ICCs is relatively poor.
Interventional Optical Imaging Permits Instant Visualization of Pathological Zones of Ablated Tumor Periphery and Residual Tumor Detection

Abstract:Optical imaging (OI) provides real-time clinical imaging capability and simultaneous molecular, morphological, and functional information of disease processes. In this study, we present a new interventional OI technique, which enables in vivo visualization of three distinct pathologic zones of ablated tumor periphery for immediate detection of residual tumors during a radiofrequency ablation (RFA) session. Rabbits with orthotopic hepatic tumors were divided into two groups (n = 8/group): incomplete RFA and complete RFA. Indocyanine green-based interventional OI was used to differentiate three pathological zones: ablated tumor, transition margin, and residual tumor or surrounding normal liver-with quantitative comparison of signal-to-background ratios among the three zones and between incompletely and completely ablated tumors. Subsequent ex vivo OI and pathologic correlation were performed to confirm the findings of interventional OI. Interventional OI could differentiate incompletely or completely ablated tumor peripheries, thus permitting identification of residual tumor. This technique may open new avenues for immediate assessment of tumor eradication during a single interventional ablation session. SIGNIFICANCE: Interventional optical imaging can instantly visualize pathologic zones of ablated tumor peripheries to detect residual tumors, which could revolutionize current image-guided interventional oncologic ablation techniques.
Evaluation of hepatic radiofrequency ablation by contrast enhanced intraoperative ultrasound

Abstract:Objective To discuss the use of contrast enhanced intraoperative uhrasound(CE-IOUS) in evaluating hepatic radiofrequency ablation(RFA)lesions.Methods Fifteen RFA lesions in twelve dogs were examined by IOUS and CE-IOUS 15 min and 30 min after RFA.IOUS and CE-IOUS images were compared with RFA specimen stained by TTC.Results Satisfactory images could be achieved bv CE-IOUS at 15 rain after RFA.Compared with IOUS,CE IOUS could depict the border of RFA lesions more clearly (P＜0.01).In CE-IOUS,93.3%(12/13)of RFA lesion images were consistent with that of TTC in shape,while in IOUS,only 13.3%(2/15)of the images were consistent with that of TTC in shape.The average areas of RFA lesions cross-section measured by IOUS,CE-IOUS and TTC were(4.82±1.49)cm2,(3.48±1.25)cm2 and(2.93±0.87)cm2.Statistical significance was found between the areas shown by IOUS and TTC staining(P=0.000),as well as between CE-IOUS and TTC staining(P=0.027).The areas shown by IOUS and TTC were not linear correlated(r=0.28,P=0.316),but the areas shown bv CE IOUS and TTC were wetl correlated(r=0.75,P=0.002). Conclusions CE-IOUS is a promising method for evaluating intraoperative RFA lesions and worthy of further clinical research.
Fusion Imaging of Contrast-Enhanced Ultrasound and Contrast-Enhanced CT or MRI Before Radiofrequency Ablation for Liver Cancers

Abstract:Objective: To investigate the usefulness of fusion imaging of contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) and CECT/CEMRI before percutaneous ultrasound-guided radiofre-quency ablation (RFA) for liver cancers.Methods: 45 consecutive patients with 70 liver lesions were included between March 2013 and October 2015, and all the lesions were identified on CEMRI/CECT prior to inclusion in the study. Planning ultrasound for percutaneous RFA was performed using conventional ultrasound, ultrasound-CECT/CEMRI and CEUS and CECT/CEMRI fusion imaging during the same session. The numbers of the conspicuous lesions on ultrasound and fusion imaging were recorded. RFA was performed according to the results of fusion imaging. Complete response (CR) rate was calculated and the complications were recorded.Results: On conventional ultrasound, 25 (35.7%) of the 70 lesions were conspicuous, whereas 45 (64.3%) were inconspicuous. Ultrasound-CECT/CEMRI fusion imaging detected additional 24 lesions thus increased the number of the conspicuous lesions to 49 (70.0%) (70.0% vs 35.7%; p < 0.001 in comparison with conventional ultrasound). With the use of CEUS and CECT/CEMRI fusion imaging, the number of the conspicuous lesions further increased to 67 (95.7%, 67/70) (95.7% vs 70.0%, 95.7% vs 35.7%; both p, 0.001 in comparison with ultrasound and ultrasound-CECT/CEMRI fusion imaging, respectively). With the assistance of CEUS and CECT/CEMRI fusion imaging, the confidence level of the operator for performing RFA improved significantly with regard to visualization of the target lesions (p = 0.001). The CR rate for RFA was 97.0% (64/66) in accordance to the CECT/CEMRI results 1 month later. No procedure-related deaths and major complications occurred during and after RFA.Conclusion: Fusion of CEUS and CECT/CEMRI improves the visualization of those inconspicuous lesions on conventional ultrasound. It also facilitates improvement in the RFA operators' confidence and CR of RFA.Advances in knowledge: CEUS and CECT/CEMRI fusion imaging is better than both conventional ultrasound and ultrasound-CECT/CEMRI fusion imaging for lesion visualization and improves the operator confidence, thus it should be recommended to be used as a routine in ultrasound-guided percutaneous RFA procedures for liver cancer.
Comparison of Cooled-Probe Microwave and Radiofrequency Ablation Treatment in Incipient Hepatocellular Carcinoma: A Phase Iii Randomized Controlled Trial with 6-Year Follow-Up

Abstract:4068 Background: According to randomized controlled trial (RCT) requirement, the therapeutic effectiveness of cooled-probe microwave ablation (MWA) versus radiofrequency ablation (RFA) on early-stage < 5cm hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) was investigated to find a better approach for minimally invasive thermal ablation. Methods: From October 2008 to June 2015, 403 cases of biopsy-proved HCC patients were involved in a RCT study, 203 (265 nodules) cases were treated with ultrasound guided percutaneously MWA and 200 (251 nodules) cases were treated with RFA. The patients were then followed up with contrast enhanced imaging including contrast enhanced ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging or computed tomography to evaluate treatment response prospectively, including technique effectiveness (TE), local tumor progression (LTP), intrahepatic metastases, extrahepatic metastases, complications, disease free survival(DFS) and overall survival(OS). Survival was analysed using the Kaplan–Meier method. The study has been registered in Clinical-Trials.gov and the identifier number is NCT02539212. Results: The follow-up period was 35.2 (range 2.0-81.9) months. MWA needed less applicator number, ablation session, puncture number, ablation duration and expense (P< 0.05). The TE rates were 99.6% (264/265) in MWA and 98.8% (248/251) in RFA. The 1-, 3-, 5-year LTP were 1.1%, 4.3%, 11.4% for MWA versus 2.1%, 5.8%, 19.7% for RFA, respectively(P= 0.11). The 1-, 3-, 5-year OS were 96.4%, 81.9% and 67.3% for MWA and 95.9%, 81.4% and 72.7% for RFA, respectively (P = 0.91). There was no difference in 5-year intrahepatic metastatic (P= 0.30) and extrahepatic metastatic rates(P= 0.12) between two groups. There was also no difference in major complications between MWA(3.4%) and RFA (2.5%) (P= 0.59). Conclusions: Both MWA and RFA are suitable options for early-stage HCC. MWA shared the advantages of less ablation duration, puncture, session and expense. Therefore, MWA seems a safe and promising treatment of HCC. Clinical trial information: NCT02539212.
Radiofrequency Ablation in the Management of Unresectable Intrahepatic Cholangiocarcinoma.

Abstract:PURPOSE:To evaluate the efficacy of radiofrequency (RF) ablation for treatment of unresectable intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) and to explore the impact of prognostic variables on outcomes.MATERIALS AND METHODS:From 2000-2010, 17 patients with 26 ICCs underwent RF ablation at a single institution. None of the patients were surgery candidates. Seven patients had 15 primary ICCs, and 10 patients had 11 recurrent ICCs. The median largest diameter was 4.4 cm (range 2.1-6.8 cm). A percutaneous approach was used in 15 patients, and an open approach was used in 2 patients. Early tumor necrosis, recurrence-free survival, and overall survival were analyzed. Univariate analysis was performed to evaluate 12 clinicopathologic and treatment-related variables associated with recurrence-free survival and overall survival.RESULTS:Early tumor necrosis was 96.2% (25 of 26 tumors). The median follow-up period after RF ablation was 29 months. The median recurrence-free survival and overall survival were 17 months and 33 months. The 1-year, 3-year, and 5-year survival rates were 84.6%, 43.3%, and 28.9%, with an overall complication rate of 3.6% (1 of 28 sessions). Three variables were found to be closely associated with recurrence-free survival: lymph node metastases (P = .023), tumor differentiation (P = .034), and tumor number (P = .035). The only variable significantly associated with overall survival was tumor differentiation (P = .033).CONCLUSIONS:Preliminary results showed that RF ablation may be an effective treatment for ICC because it achieved an acceptable survival rate in a small population. Prognostic factors might allow better patient selection and outcomes.
[Ultrasound-Guided Percutaneous Radiofrequency Ablation of Hepatic Malignancies with Cool-Tip Needle].

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To investigate the efficacy, indication and complication of radiofrequency ablation (RFA) with cool-tip needle in patients with hepatic malignancies. METHODS:421 patients with hepatic malignancies underwent ultrasound-guided RFA with cool-tip needle under local anaesthesia. The tumor size was from 1.0 to 15 cm in diameter with an average diameter of 4.3 cm. RESULTS:The complete ablation (CA) rate was 91.4% (382/418) in the patients with a tumor < 3 cm, 78.9% (97/123) in those with a tumor of 3 to 5 cm and 37.6% (35/93) in the patients with a tumor > 5 cm. No patient died or changed to celiotomy during the 1121 times of RFA for 634 lesions in 421 patients. No hemorrhage occurred in any of these patients after the RFA treatment. The complications included abdominal pain in 32.3% (136/421), nausea in 9.0% (38/421), fever in 34.9% (147/421) and biliary leakage in 0.2% (1/421) of the patients. CONCLUSION:Ultrasound-guided percutaneous radiofrequency ablation with cool-tip needle is effective and safe in the treatment of liver tumors.

Abstract:Most recurrent intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (RICC) lost the opportunity of radical resection while most nonsurgical management failed to prolong patients’ survival. The efficacy and safety of radiofrequency ablation (RFA) as a local treatment for recurrent hepatocellular carcinoma have been confirmed by many clinical studies. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy, long-term survival and complications of RFA for RICC.
Ultrasound-Guided Percutaneous Radiofrequency Ablation of Liver Metastasis From Ovarian Cancer: A Single-Center Initial Experience

Abstract:Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility, effectiveness, and safety of ultrasound-guided percutaneous radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for the treatment of liver metastasis from ovarian cancer (OC). Methods: A retrospective review was performed on 11 patients (mean age, 53.0 ± 10.1 years) with 22 liver metastases (mean diameter, 2.0 ± 0.8 cm) from OC undergone RFA. Radiofrequency ablation was carried out with Starburst XL electrodes (RITA Medical System, Mountain View, CA) or Cool-tip electrodes (Cool-tip Systems; Valleylab, Boulder, CO). The tumor response, time to progression, and survival after RFA were assessed. Results: Complete ablation was achieved for all lesions. The technique effectiveness was 100%. During the follow-up period, local tumor progression was observed in 1 (4.5%) of 22 lesions. The median time to progression was 8.0 months after RFA. Three patients died because of disease progression after 13, 18, and 24 months, respectively. The mean overall survival time after RFA was 53.1 ± 10.0 months, with the 1-, 3-, and 5-year overall survival rates of 100%, 61%, and 61%, respectively. No major complications were encountered. Conclusions: Radiofrequency ablation as an alternative treatment strategy is feasible and effective for selected patients with liver metastasis from OC, providing a high rate of local tumor control.

Abstract:Objective To evaluate the efficacy after radiofrequency ablation ( RFA) for hepatic malignant tumors under the guidance of contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS). Methods Twenty-seven patients (28 nodules) including 20 patients of primary hepatocellular carcinoma and 7 patients of metastatic carcinoma were selected, and each patient underwent CEUS before RFA to determine the size and loca-tion of the tumor. The diameter of the tumor was 1. 3~5. 2cm (median,2. 6 cm). Results After treatment for 1 day or 1 month of enhanced imaging, except for 1 case of tip residual tumor, 27 nodules were completely inactivated, and the effective inactivation rate was 96%. No se-rious complications during and post operation, a small amount of pleural effusion occurred in 3 cases, not given special treatment. Conclu-sion CEUS-guided RFA appears to be a safe, reliable, minimally-invasive procedure for the treatment of malignant hepatic tumors.

Abstract:Objective To evaluate whether real time contrast-enhanced ultrasound(CEUS)guided radiofrequency ablation(RFA)can be performed effectively in hepatic malignances which were invisible or poor visible in gray-scale ultrasonography.Methods From Jan.2010 to Apr.2011,45 consecutive in-patients with 45 hepatic malignances in Zhongshan Hospital of Fudan University were included.All lesions including 38 primary and 7 metastatic hepatic malignancies were planned to undergo RFA therapy.CEUS guided RFA was conducted when the optimal image of a lesion was obtained.At the same time,digital cine-clips of the entire procedure were stored on the hard disk.Results After SonoVue injection,all lesions showed hyper-enhanced or iso-enhanced in arterial phase with sharp margins.Thirty lesions showed hypo-enhanced in portal-vein phase.The overall detection rate of CEUS was 100%(45/45).The insertions of RF electrodes were monitored by CEUS in 34 patients and baseline ultrasound immediately after CEUS in the remaining 11 patients.One month after RFA,complete tumor ablation were obtained for all lesions.Conclusion CEUS guided RFA is a promising technique for targeting of lesions and improving the treatment efficiency of hepatic malignances.

Abstract:Irreversible electroporation (IRE) is a novel form of soft tissue ablation therapy that uses highcurrent electrical pulses to induce the formation of pores in the cell membrane, leading to cell death. Although outcome data for the ablation of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) by IRE are limited, early results are encouraging and may suggest equivalency to the outcomes achieved by thermal ablation methods such as radiofrequency ablation (RFA) and microwave ablation (MWA). However, IRE can be a challenging and very time-consuming procedure compared to RFA and MWA. In this review article, we not only evaluate the efficacy and safety of IRE for the treatment of HCC, but also discuss imaging guidance, ablation monitoring, and endpoint assessment, with a particular focus on ultrasonography.

Abstract:AIM:To investigate the application of intraopera- tive ultrasound to surgery for liver neoplasms. METHODS:Intraoperative ultrasound was used to scan 78 patients with liver neoplasms.The results of intraoperative ultrasound were com- pared with those of preoperative ultrasound and computed tomography(CT)/enhanced CT. RESULTS:Of 65 patients suffering from liver cancer,intraoperative ultrasound determined all cases,whereas preoperative ultrasound and CT/enhanced CT missed 10 and 6 cases,respec- tively.For diagnostic accuracy of liver hemangi- oma,intraoperative ultrasound was better than preoperative ultrasound and CT/enhanced CT (92.31% vs 69.23% and 76.92%,respectively).For small-sized foci with diameters≤1.0 cm,intra- operative ultrasound had a statistically signifi- cant better detection rate than preoperative ul- trasound or CT/enhanced CT(90.48% vs 59.52% and 69.05%,respectively,both P<0.05).Intra- operative ultrasound could also better ascertain lesions with diameters bigger.The detection rate was 96.36%,which was significantly higher than that of preoperative ultrasound(74.55%,P<0.05).The operative style was changed in 22 pa- tients and all lesions were removed after intra- operative ultrasound scans that then determined the resection line and pathway.No residual can- cer cells were found at the cutting edge. CONCLUSION:Compared with preoperative ultrasound and CT/enhanced CT,intraoperative ultrasound is accurate in its diagnosis of quality and localization of liver neoplasms.Thus intra- operative ultrasound,a minimally invasive con- cept,enhances the security of surgery and the degree of thoroughness for patients with liver tumors.
