Abstract:Dendrimer is one type of macromolecules with well-defined, highly-branched and nano-scaled architectures, composed of three distinct domains: core, branches and terminal groups. Its potential functions and applications are explored based on the unique physical and chemical features due to special molecular architecture. Using polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) as the core of dendrimers is an effective and facile way to simplify the tedious repetitive steps of preparation and separation. Since POSS allows eight branches to radiate from a silicon-oxygen right cubic core, the dendrimers can be constructed in a well-controlled globular, three-dimensional framework, and large numbers of peripheral groups can be obtained at relatively low generation numbers. As a kind of novel nano-hybrid supermolecules, POSS-based dendrimers have attracted considerable interest in materials science. In this review, we briefly introduce the synthetic approaches of some typical POSS-based dendrimers categorized by the different chemical composition of branching units, and then focus on the potential functions and applications of this nano-hybrid material in the field of catalysis, gene and drug delivery, liquid crystals, light harvesting and energy transfer. The specific and excellent properties imparted by the incorporation of POSS into dendrimers are also presented. Finally, the advances of POSS-based dendrimers are prospected.

Abstract:Well-defined dendrimers with highly branched and regularly repeating molecular architectures have generated great interesting. They possess considerable advantages over the well-developed conjugated polymers and small molecular light-emitting materials I whose luminescence can be finely tuned by changing the core with a wide range of luminescent chromophores. Furthermore, Various functional surface groups and different generations can be selected to generate the interesting properties such as carrier-transporting, site isolation, solubility and antenna effects. Along with the luminescent molecular and polymeric materials, light-emitting dendrimers are becoming the third class of emissive materials for use in OLEDs. This paper reviews the recent developments in dendrimeric electroluminescent materials, and particular attention is paid on the design of dendrimers and relative properties. The further developing tendency of dendrimers in electroluminescence field is also prospected.

Abstract:Low-dimensional heterostructured functional materials have been widely applied in new energy materials, catalysts, et al. However, to enhance photo-response in visible light and the biocompatibility improvement are still the great challenges faced. And the dendrimers act good roles in transferring the drug and gene, and has good biocompatibility. Self-assembly on the surface of low-dimensional heterostructured functional materials with dendrimers holding-COOH groups was carried out in this paper. The characterizations of the materials were examined by SEM (scanning electron microscopy), XRD (X-ray diffraction), the Fourier-Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectra, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis) and so on. The photoconductivity response to visible light and 808 nm laser with low-power were studied based on interdigital electrodes of Au on flexible PET (polyethylene terephthalate) film substrate. The results indicated that ZnO/CuS modified with dendrimers showed good photo-response to visible light and 808 nm laser, the photo-response properties enhanced greatly by adding some small amount of grapheme oxide. Photocatalytic efficiency was examined by selecting typical organic pollutants, some good results were obtained. The external stimuli driven nanorobots for removal the organic pollutants or toxins in the living body have been developed.

Abstract:During the past decade, the discovery of thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials has significantly boosted the development of organic light‐emitting diode (OLED) technology. Compared with small‐molecule and polymeric TADF materials, TADF dendrimers have emerged as promising emitters for solution‐processed OLEDs because they have the integrated advantages of TADF small molecules and polymers in achieving high efficiency, excellent solution processability, and precise molecular structures. In recent years, TADF dendrimers have experienced important advances in molecular design, mechanism exploration and device performance. Herein, we present a comprehensive review of solution‐processable TADF dendrimers, mainly focusing on their molecular design principles and structure–property correlations. The advanced device performances of these dendrimers are also summarized. Finally, we proposed the prospects and challenges on the development of TADF dendrimers.

Abstract:Along with the increasing charm and potential of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) for flat panel displays and solid-light lighting, exploring more applicative and cost-saving luminescent materials is extremely urgent. Dendrimers, as the promising electroluminescent materials in OLEDs through solution process, feature highly ordered and three-dimensional core-shell molecular structures, including a core to control the emissive colors and the highly dispersed branches to adjust the optoelectronic characteristics. Combining the advantages of dendrimers and solution-processed OLEDs, it is feasible to achieve excellent device performances equivalent to those fabricated via vacuum evaporation. This chapter briefly summarizes the recent research process of dendrimers as organic electroluminescent materials, including the unique advantages of dendritic molecules, the design of dendritic compounds, and the future research prospects of dendritic molecules.

Abstract:Phosphorescent dendrimers together with dendritic host materials have inherent advantages in achieving highly efficient phosphorescent organic light‐emitting diodes (PHOLEDs) with low‐cost, solution‐processed device fabrication. Recently, much research effort has been devoted to developing these dendritic materials in the field of electroluminescence (EL). In this Focus Review, the major advances in this line of research are summarized and discussed. The crucial roles played by these dendritic organic electronic materials in coping with the key issues in the field of PHOLEDs have been specially emphasized. These include alleviating the triplet‐triplet annihilation effect through the site‐isolation effect associated with the dendritic structures, promoting charge‐carrier injection/transporting ability and ambipolar properties through functionalized dendrons, fulfilling simple PHOLEDs with high EL efficiencies, obtaining self‐hosting phosphorescent emitters, and avoiding undesired energy transfer process from phosphorescent cores to the dendrons. In addition, the future perspectives and ongoing challenges of this research frontier are also highlighted.

Abstract:Two deep blue-emitting dendrimers 11 and 12 with carbazole containing dendrons were developed in this contribution. The carbazole-containing units were introduced to tune the charge-transporting property of the desired dendrimers. The investigation of photophysical properties, electrochemical, and electroluminescence properties demonstrated that the balance between electron and hole transporting was achieved from both dendrimers. The preliminary organic light-emitting diode (OLED) fabrication achieved a pure blue colour with stable CIE chromaticity coordinates (X: 0.15–0.16, Y: 0.09–0.10) for 11 and 12. Single layer deep blue emitting diode devices with higher efficiency are achieved without the colour changing. The investigation of OLED performance indicates that dendrimers 11 and 12 are promising light-emitting materials with pure blue colour and good colour stability for OLEDs.

Abstract:A novel series of naphthalimide dendrimers has been synthesized based on a convergent and divergent combined approach. The dendrimers consist of naphthalimide-based cores, Frechet-type poly(aryl ether) dendrons, and carbazole (CZ) or oxadiazole (OXZ) peripheral groups. The higher generation dendrimer has site-isolation effect, or the dilution effect of the dendrons. This configuration would reduce the aggregating extent or possibility of the core unit, thus resulting in a relatively small red-shift of absorption and fluorescent spectra when they form a solid film for the applications. Studies of steady-state fluorescence properties of the dendrimers show that excitation of the terminal chromophores results mainly in the core emission alone, as the donor emission is seriously quenched due to its effective Forster intramolecular energy transfer to the core. The dendrimers show enhanced luminescence properties of the core, and the enhanced luminescent efficiency is dependent on the generation number of the dendrimers. Time-resolved luminescent measurements further supported the conclusion that the contribution tendency for each peripheral donor is decreased with the increasing of the generation number, especially for the third generation. The dendron-incorporated carbazole unit can decrease the HOMO orbital energy by 0.4 eV, thus facilitating the hole-injection in electroluminescent (EL) devices. The preliminary EL results with a single-layer architecture made with the dendrimers by means of the spin-coating technique demonstrate that these dendrimers could be utilized as promising active nondoping emitters.
Synthesis and Physical Properties of the Conjugated Dendrons Bearing Twisted Acenes Used in Solution Processing of Organic Light-Emitting Diodes

Abstract:Five novel organic conjugated derivatives containing multifraction twisted acene units have been synthesized and characterized. These compounds and the model molecule 2-methyl-5,12-diphenyl-6:7,10:11-bisbenzotetracene emit strong blue light in diluted solution with quantum yields of 0.21-0.67, while in the solid state, except for the 1,2,3,4,5,6-hexa(2-(5,12-diphenyl-6:7,10:11-bis-(4'-tert-butylbenzo)tetracene))benzene, green luminance is seen. The experimental results also indicate that the multifraction structure leads to a significant fluorescence enhancement (over two times) compared to the monomer, which might be attributed to the formation of delocalized excited state in multibranch structures. The quantum-chemical calculation implies that only two branches are involved in formation of the delocalized system for the multibranched derivatives. Furthermore, the organic light-emitting diode (OLED) devices using compounds 1,4-di(2-(5,12-diphenyl-6:7,10:11-bis(4'-tert-butylbenzo)tetracene))benzene, 1,3-di (2-(5,12-diphenyl-6 :7,10:11-bis(4'-tert-butylbenzo)tetracene))benzene, and 1,3,5-tri(2-(5,12-diphenyl-6:7,10:11-bis(4'-tert-butylbenzo)tetracene))benzene as emitters exhibit good electroluminescent performance. Our systematic studies might provide more chances to challenge the rational design and synthesis of new- and high-generation branched dendrimers.
Unsymmetrical Dendrimers As Highly Efficient Light-Emitting Materials: Synthesis, Photophysics, and Electroluminescence

Abstract:Highly efficient light-emitting materials can be archived by a rational design that involves rigid dendron and pi-conjugated chromophores. This strategy is exemplified by three unsymmetrical dendrimers 5-(2',3',4',5'-tetraphenyl)phenyl-5'-(9- anthracenyl)-2,2'-bithiophene (1), 5-(2',3',4',5'-tetraphenyl)phenyl-5'-(1-pyrenyl)2,2' -bithiophene (2), and 5-(2'.3',4'.5'-tetraphenyl)phenyl-5'-(1-pyrenylethynyl)-2.2'- bithiophene (3). Thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry suggest that unsymmetrical dendrimers 1 and 2 have good thermal stability (>400 degrees C) and high glass transition temperature (> 130 degrees C) which make them promising candidates for highly stable organic light-emitting devices. The comparative study on their UV-vis absorption and fluorescence spectra in Solution and as thin films indicates that the unsymmetrical dendrimers can form intermolecular pi-pi stacking in the solid state. Electroluminescence (EL) devices using them as en-litters were made, and it was found that they emit intense green light, and the maximum luminance was 8659 cd/m(2) at 13.5 V with a maximum efficiency of 4.9 cd/A for 1. The further comparative study on the EL performance of 1-3, combined with their single crystal structures, demonstrated that with felicitously chosen pi-conjugated chromophores and better control of the space between the chromophore and dendron highly efficient light-emitting materials will be realized.

Abstract:The dendrimers with porphyrin core have extensive applications in many fields due to its special physical, chemical and photovoltaic properties, especially their energy/electron transfer properties. Recently, lots of dendrimers with porphyrin core have been synthesized. This paper reviews the recent developments of the dendrimers with porphyrin core. First, we introduce some new compounds which synthesized in recent years, and the synthetic methods and properties of some topic compounds. These compounds can be used in different filelds, such as light-harvesting materials, light-emitting materials, photodynamic therapy, catalysts, sensors. and so on. Finally, the research trends for the future are presented.

Abstract:<p>In this work solution‐processed organic white‐light emitting diodes comprising a blend of red and blue phosphorescent dendrimers are presented. In contrast to common small molecule blended‐dye organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs), the bulky dendrons between the light emitting moieties increase the spacing and hamper the transfer of excitons between the dyes. The reduced transfer of the excitons from the blue dye to the red dye enables greater control over OLED color avoiding the issue in which small variations in the concentration of the red dye can dramatically change the emission color. Thus, the approach leads to enhanced manufacturing reproducibility. Transient electroluminescence measurements provide detailed insights into the charge carrier and exciton formation and transfer dynamics within the device.</p>
