Abstract:Well-defined dendrimers with highly branched and regularly repeating molecular architectures have generated great interesting. They possess considerable advantages over the well-developed conjugated polymers and small molecular light-emitting materials I whose luminescence can be finely tuned by changing the core with a wide range of luminescent chromophores. Furthermore, Various functional surface groups and different generations can be selected to generate the interesting properties such as carrier-transporting, site isolation, solubility and antenna effects. Along with the luminescent molecular and polymeric materials, light-emitting dendrimers are becoming the third class of emissive materials for use in OLEDs. This paper reviews the recent developments in dendrimeric electroluminescent materials, and particular attention is paid on the design of dendrimers and relative properties. The further developing tendency of dendrimers in electroluminescence field is also prospected.

Abstract:Low-dimensional heterostructured functional materials have been widely applied in new energy materials, catalysts, et al. However, to enhance photo-response in visible light and the biocompatibility improvement are still the great challenges faced. And the dendrimers act good roles in transferring the drug and gene, and has good biocompatibility. Self-assembly on the surface of low-dimensional heterostructured functional materials with dendrimers holding-COOH groups was carried out in this paper. The characterizations of the materials were examined by SEM (scanning electron microscopy), XRD (X-ray diffraction), the Fourier-Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectra, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis) and so on. The photoconductivity response to visible light and 808 nm laser with low-power were studied based on interdigital electrodes of Au on flexible PET (polyethylene terephthalate) film substrate. The results indicated that ZnO/CuS modified with dendrimers showed good photo-response to visible light and 808 nm laser, the photo-response properties enhanced greatly by adding some small amount of grapheme oxide. Photocatalytic efficiency was examined by selecting typical organic pollutants, some good results were obtained. The external stimuli driven nanorobots for removal the organic pollutants or toxins in the living body have been developed.

Abstract:Dendrimer is one type of macromolecules with well-defined, highly-branched and nano-scaled architectures, composed of three distinct domains: core, branches and terminal groups. Its potential functions and applications are explored based on the unique physical and chemical features due to special molecular architecture. Using polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) as the core of dendrimers is an effective and facile way to simplify the tedious repetitive steps of preparation and separation. Since POSS allows eight branches to radiate from a silicon-oxygen right cubic core, the dendrimers can be constructed in a well-controlled globular, three-dimensional framework, and large numbers of peripheral groups can be obtained at relatively low generation numbers. As a kind of novel nano-hybrid supermolecules, POSS-based dendrimers have attracted considerable interest in materials science. In this review, we briefly introduce the synthetic approaches of some typical POSS-based dendrimers categorized by the different chemical composition of branching units, and then focus on the potential functions and applications of this nano-hybrid material in the field of catalysis, gene and drug delivery, liquid crystals, light harvesting and energy transfer. The specific and excellent properties imparted by the incorporation of POSS into dendrimers are also presented. Finally, the advances of POSS-based dendrimers are prospected.
Dendron-Functionalized Macromolecules: Enhancing Core Luminescence and Tuning Carrier Injection

Abstract:A novel series of naphthalimide dendrimers has been synthesized based on a convergent and divergent combined approach. The dendrimers consist of naphthalimide-based cores, Frechet-type poly(aryl ether) dendrons, and carbazole (CZ) or oxadiazole (OXZ) peripheral groups. The higher generation dendrimer has site-isolation effect, or the dilution effect of the dendrons. This configuration would reduce the aggregating extent or possibility of the core unit, thus resulting in a relatively small red-shift of absorption and fluorescent spectra when they form a solid film for the applications. Studies of steady-state fluorescence properties of the dendrimers show that excitation of the terminal chromophores results mainly in the core emission alone, as the donor emission is seriously quenched due to its effective Forster intramolecular energy transfer to the core. The dendrimers show enhanced luminescence properties of the core, and the enhanced luminescent efficiency is dependent on the generation number of the dendrimers. Time-resolved luminescent measurements further supported the conclusion that the contribution tendency for each peripheral donor is decreased with the increasing of the generation number, especially for the third generation. The dendron-incorporated carbazole unit can decrease the HOMO orbital energy by 0.4 eV, thus facilitating the hole-injection in electroluminescent (EL) devices. The preliminary EL results with a single-layer architecture made with the dendrimers by means of the spin-coating technique demonstrate that these dendrimers could be utilized as promising active nondoping emitters.

Abstract:Phosphorescent dendrimers together with dendritic host materials have inherent advantages in achieving highly efficient phosphorescent organic light‐emitting diodes (PHOLEDs) with low‐cost, solution‐processed device fabrication. Recently, much research effort has been devoted to developing these dendritic materials in the field of electroluminescence (EL). In this Focus Review, the major advances in this line of research are summarized and discussed. The crucial roles played by these dendritic organic electronic materials in coping with the key issues in the field of PHOLEDs have been specially emphasized. These include alleviating the triplet‐triplet annihilation effect through the site‐isolation effect associated with the dendritic structures, promoting charge‐carrier injection/transporting ability and ambipolar properties through functionalized dendrons, fulfilling simple PHOLEDs with high EL efficiencies, obtaining self‐hosting phosphorescent emitters, and avoiding undesired energy transfer process from phosphorescent cores to the dendrons. In addition, the future perspectives and ongoing challenges of this research frontier are also highlighted.

Abstract:During the past decade, the discovery of thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials has significantly boosted the development of organic light‐emitting diode (OLED) technology. Compared with small‐molecule and polymeric TADF materials, TADF dendrimers have emerged as promising emitters for solution‐processed OLEDs because they have the integrated advantages of TADF small molecules and polymers in achieving high efficiency, excellent solution processability, and precise molecular structures. In recent years, TADF dendrimers have experienced important advances in molecular design, mechanism exploration and device performance. Herein, we present a comprehensive review of solution‐processable TADF dendrimers, mainly focusing on their molecular design principles and structure–property correlations. The advanced device performances of these dendrimers are also summarized. Finally, we proposed the prospects and challenges on the development of TADF dendrimers.

Abstract:The implementation of dendrimers as emitters in light‐emitting electrochemical cells offers low‐cost synthesis, easy upscaling, and comparable stabilities to state or the art emitters. Molecular design focuses on exchanging peripheral substituents to tune photophysical and electrochemical features, leading to enhanced stability and ion conductivity, and excellent compatibility with biogenic electrolytes, even with indium–tin oxide‐free devices. This work establishes the bright future of dendrimers for sustainable lighting sources. A rational implementation and optimization of thermally activated delayed fluorescent (TADF) dendrimer emitters in light‐emitting electrochemical cells (LECs) sets in the Dendri‐LEC family. They feature outstanding stabilities (90/1050 h for green/yellow devices) that are comparable to the best green/yellow Ir(III)‐complexes (450/500 h) and conjugated polymers (33/5500 h), while offering benefits of low‐cost synthesis and easy upscaling. In particular, a fundamental molecular design that capitalizes on exchanging peripheral substituents (tert‐butyl vs methoxy) to tune photophysical, electrochemical, morphological, and ion conductivity features in thin films is rationalized by temperature‐dependent steady‐state and time‐resolved emission spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, atomic force microscopy, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy techniques. Herein, a TADF mechanism associated to a reduced photoluminescence quantum yield, but an enhanced electrochemical stability and ion conductivity enables to clarify the reduced device efficiency and brightness (4.0 lm W−1@110 cd m−2 vs 3.2 lm W−1@55 cd m−2) and increased stability (90 vs 1050 h) upon using methoxy groups. What is more, this substitution enables an excellent compatibility with biogenic electrolytes keeping device performances (1.9 lm W−1@35 cd m−2 and 1300 h), while graphene‐devices achieve on par figures to traditional indium–tin oxide‐devices. Overall, this work establishes the bright future of dendrimer emitters toward highly stable and truly sustainable lighting sources.

Abstract:This paper involves a review on the advancing history of electroluminescent and displaying devices based on semi-conducting polymers(PLED), a series of main breakthroughs in this field in recent years. The different PLED structures and their features of nowaday ongoing research works are compared, the basic working principle of PLED are briefly introduced to the point, a precise defination of PLED quantum efficiency is given and the methods about how to improve the quantum efficiency are comprehensively described. The design, synthesis of charge transport polymers and their application in PLEDs are presented taking the prevalent multilayer PLEDs as examples. The application fields, existent problems, and future development of PLEDs are commented as a conclusion remark.
Dendron-functionalized Perylene Diimides with Carrier-Transporting Ability for Red Luminescent Materials

Abstract:This paper presents a series of dendrimers via a convergent synthetic approach with three generations, which contain perylene diimide cores, Fréchet-type poly(aryl ether) dendrons, and carbazole (CZ) or oxadiazole (OXZ) peripheral functional groups. The higher generation dendrimer has an obvious site-isolation or dilution effect of dendrons, which results in a relatively small red-shift of absorption and emission spectra when it forms a solid thin film for applications. The interactions between peripheral units and perylene diimide core in the dendrimers are also studied by steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence spectra under both direct and indirect excitation. The fluorescence data show that there exist two possible mechanisms, Förster energy transfer (FRET) and photo-induced electron transfer (PET), for dendrimers bearing carbazole units. No enhanced core fluorescence is observed because the energy transfer or light-harvesting potential of peripheral carbazole is counteracted by PET. While for dendrimers bearing oxadiazole units, no PET can take place between OXZ and perylene diimide since both of them are high electron affinity. The FRET and higher light-harvesting ability of oxadiazole without PET interfering result in the distinct enhancement of core emission in higher generation dendrimers. DSC results indicate that the incorporation of Fréchet-type poly(aryl ether) dendrons can improve the amorphous property and increase glass transition temperature (Tg). The preliminary EL results with single-layer architectures demonstrate that these dendrimers could be utilized as a promising kind of active red luminescent emitters with carrier-transporting ability. EL emission has the same recombination zone as PL, indicating that the recombination of excitons in fabricated EL devices is not close to cathode or anode vicinity. It is suggested that the site-isolation effect of dendron wedges is attributed to prevent the core luminorphores from approaching electrodes efficiently.

The progress about fluorene-based electroluminescent materials domestic and abroad as well as our own work in the past few years is reviewed. Some issues to be addressed and hotspots to be further investigated are also discussed.

Abstract:A series of solution-processable conjugated dendrimers (T1-T5) consisting of a pyrene core. fluorene/carbazole dendrons, and acetylene linkages have been Successfully synthesized and fully characterized. The effects of (generation on the photoluminescence (PL) and electroluminescence (EL) of dendrimers are investigated. Photon harvest and energy transfer are observed in these dendritic systems. Efficient electroluminescent single layer dendrimer devices are achieved through control of dendrimer generation and optimization of spin-coating speed. A T3-based device exhibits yellow EL (CIE: 0.49 0.50) with a maximum brightness of 5590 cd/m(2) at 16 V, a high current efficiency of 2.67 cd/A at 8.6 V, and a best external quantum efficiency of 0.86%.

Abstract:Two conjugated dendrimers with fluorinated terminal groups have been designed and synthesized. Dendrimer TP1 exhibits nanofibrous self-assembly ability accompanied by an unusual blue-shifted emission from nanofibers, and TP2 shows efficient electroluminescence property in single-layer organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs).

Abstract:Dendrimer Emitters In article number 2110344, Dianming Sun, Xiaohong Zhang, Anna Köhler, Eli Zysman‐Colman, and co‐workers report the rational design of thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) dendrimer emitters that show remarkable photophysical properties, resolving the conflicting requirements of achieving simultaneously a small activation energy and a large oscillator strength. Their use in a host‐free solution‐processed organic light‐emitting diode (OLED), which shows record‐high external quantum efficiencies, is demonstrated. The dendrimer design strategy provides a route to high‐performance solution‐processed TADF OLEDs and evidences the full potential of dendrimers as emissive materials.

Abstract:Benefited from direct generation of circularly polarized (CP) emission with tunable colors, high efficiencies and facile device architectures, CP organic light-emitting diodes (CP-OLEDs) have attracted great attention and are expected to meet industrial applications. Particularly, CP electroluminescence (CPEL) originated from CP-OLEDs has wide potential applications in 3D displays, optical information storage, quantum communication, and biological sensors. The diverse design strategies of chiral luminescent materials for CP-OLEDs, including small organic emitters, lanthanide and transition-metal complexes and conjugated polymers, have been extensively explored. Helicene with twisted extended pi-conjugated molecular structure could exhibit special helical chirality and excellent circularly polarized luminescence properties, which has been employed as the ingenious chirality core for constructing efficient chiral luminescent materials. In addition, significant improvements have been made in terms of CP photoluminescence research, however, the development of CPEL with more application prospects in optoelectronic technology still lags behind. In this review, we systematically summarize the recent advances in chiral luminescent materials based on helicene structure and their CPEL properties, including helicene-based chiral fluorescence molecules, transition metal complexes and thermally activated delayed fluorescence molecules, and discuss current challenges and future perspectives for this hot research field. We believe this progress report will provide a promising perspective of OLEDs based on helicene emitters with CPEL properties for extensive researchers, including chemical, physical and material scientists in different disciplinary fields and attract them to this rapidly developing field.
