Abstract:Let G be a strict RS-set (resp. an RS-set) in X and let F be a bounded (resp. totally bounded) subset of X satisfying r"G(F)>r"X(F), where r"G(F) is the restricted Chebyshev radius of F with respect to G. It is shown that the restricted Chebyshev center of F with respect to G is strongly unique in the case when X is a real Banach space, and that, under some additional convexity assumptions, the restricted Chebyshev center of F with respect to G is strongly unique of order @a>=2 in the case when X is a complex Banach space.

Abstract:> The uniqueness and existence of restricted Chebyshev center with respect to arbitrary subset are investigated. The concept of almost Chebyshev sets with respect to bounded subsets is introduced. It is proved that each closed subset in a reflexive locally uniformly convex (uniformly convex, respectively) Banach space is an almost Chebyshev subset with respect to compact convex subsets (bounded convex subsets and bounded subsets, respectively).

Abstract:A characterization of unconditional convergent series is given for the case of sequentially complete locally convex spaces. From it we show that if E is a barrelled space with continuous dual E', then (E', beta(E', E)) contains no copy of (c(0), parallel to.parallel to(infinity)) if and only if every continuous linear operator T : E --> l(1) is both compact and sequentially compact.

Abstract:We present some sufficient conditions ensuring the upper semicontinuity and the continuity of the Bregman projection operator ΠCg and the relative projection operator PCg in terms of the D-approximate (weak) compactness for a nonempty closed set C in a Banach space X. We next present certain sufficient conditions as well as equivalent conditions for the convexity of a Chebyshev subset of a Banach space X. Our results extend the corresponding results of [H.H. Bauschke, X.F. Wang, J. Ye and X. M. Yuan, Bregman distances and Chebyshev sets, J. Approx. Theory 159 (2009) 3–25] to infinite dimensional spaces.

Abstract:This paper is dedicated to an optimization problem. Let A, B ⊂ R n be compact convex sets. Consider the minimal number t 0 > 0 such that t 0B covers A after a shift to a vector x 0 ∈ R n. The goal is to find t 0 and x 0 . In the special case of B being a unit ball centered at zero, x 0 and t 0 are known as the Chebyshev center and the Chebyshev radius of A. This paper focuses on the case in which A and B are defined with their black-box support functions. An algorithm for solving such problems efficiently is suggested. The algorithm has a superlinear convergence rate, and it can solve hundred-dimensional test problems in a reasonable time, but some additional conditions on A and B are required to guarantee the presence of convergence. Additionally, the behavior of the algorithm for a simple special case is investigated, which leads to a number of theoretical results. Perturbations of this special case are also studied.

Abstract:We prove that every smooth complex normed space X has the Wigner property. That is, for any complex normed space Y and every surjective mapping satisfying where is the unit circle of the complex plane, there exists a function such that is a linear or anti-linear isometry. This is a variant of Wigner's theorem for complex normed spaces.

Abstract:Best approximation (BA) is an interesting field in functional analysis that has attracted a lot of attention from many researchers for a very long period of time up-to-date. Of greatest consideration is the characterization of the Chebyshev set (CS) which is a subset of a normed linear space (NLS) which contains unique BAs. However, a fundamental question remains unsolved to-date regarding the convexity of the CS in infinite NLS known as the CS problem. The question which has not been answered is: Is every CS in a NLS convex?. This question has not got any solution including the simplest form of a real Hilbert space (HS). In this note, we characterize CSs and convexity in NLSs. In particular, we consider the space of all real-valued norm-attainable functions. We show that CSs of the space of all real-valued norm-attainable functions are convex when they are closed, rotund and admits both Gateaux and Fr\'{e}chet differentiability conditions.

A numerical algorithm for attaining the Chebyshev bound in optimal learning

Abstract:Given a compact subset of a Banach space, the Chebyshev center problem consists of finding a minimal circumscribing ball containing the set. In this article we establish a numerically tractable algorithm for solving the Chebyshev center problem in the context of optimal learning from a finite set of data points. For a hypothesis space realized as a compact but not necessarily convex subset of a finite-dimensional subspace of some underlying Banach space, this algorithm computes the Chebyshev radius and the Chebyshev center of the hypothesis space, thereby solving the problem of optimal recovery of functions from data. The algorithm itself is based on, and significantly extends, recent results for near-optimal solutions of convex semi-infinite problems by means of targeted sampling, and it is of independent interest. Several examples of numerical computations of Chebyshev centers are included in order to illustrate the effectiveness of the algorithm.

Abstract:In [Generalized centers of finite sets in Banach spaces. Acta Math Univ Comenian (N.S.). 1997;66(1):83–115], Veselý developed the idea of generalized centers for finite sets in Banach spaces. In this work, we explore the concept of restricted F -center property for a triplet (X,Y,F(X)) , where Y is a subspace of a Banach space X and F(X) is the family of finite subsets of X . In addition, we generalize the analysis to include all closed, bounded subsets of X . Similar to how Lindenstrauss characterized n.2.I.P. , we characterize n.X.I.P. . So, it is possible to figure out that Y has n.X.I.P. in X for all natural numbers n if and only if radY(F)=radX(F) for all finite subsets F of Y . It then turns out that, for all continuous, monotone functions f , the f -radii viz. radYf(F),radXf(F) are same whenever the generalized radii viz. radY(F),radX(F) are also same, for all finite subsets F of Y . We establish a variety of characterizations of central subspaces of Banach spaces. With reference to an appropriate subfamily of closed and bounded subsets, it appears that a number of function spaces and subspaces exhibit the restricted weighted Chebyshev center property.

Abstract:Let $E$ be a two-dimensional real normed space. In this paper we show that if the unit circle of $E$ does not contain any line segment such that the distance between its endpoints is greater than 1, then every transformation $\phi\colon E\to E$ which preserves the unit distance is automatically an affine isometry. In particular, this condition is satisfied when the norm is strictly convex.
