Abstract:The Lipschitz continuity results are given for best approximations and Chebyshev centers. Consequently, the open problem presented by Septycki and Vleck is solved completely.

Abstract:We present some sufficient conditions ensuring the upper semicontinuity and the continuity of the Bregman projection operator ΠCg and the relative projection operator PCg in terms of the D-approximate (weak) compactness for a nonempty closed set C in a Banach space X. We next present certain sufficient conditions as well as equivalent conditions for the convexity of a Chebyshev subset of a Banach space X. Our results extend the corresponding results of [H.H. Bauschke, X.F. Wang, J. Ye and X. M. Yuan, Bregman distances and Chebyshev sets, J. Approx. Theory 159 (2009) 3–25] to infinite dimensional spaces.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the problem of nonlinear simultaneous Chebyshev approximation in a real continuous function space. Some results on existence are established, in addition to characterization conditions of Kolmogorov type and also of alternation type. Applications are given to approximation by rational functions, by exponential sums and by Chebyshev splines with free knots.

Abstract:To provide a Kolmogorov-type condition for characterizing a best approximation in a continuous complex-valued function space, it is usually assumed that the family of closed convex sets in the complex plane used to restrict the range satisfies a strong interior-point condition, and this excludes the interesting case when some t is a line-segment or a singleton. The main aim of the present paper is to remove this restriction by virtue of a study of the notion of the strong CHIP for an infinite system of closed convex sets in a continuous complex-valued function space.

Abstract:The well posedness of best simultaneous approximation problems is considered. We establish the generic results on the well posedness of the best simultaneous approximation problems for any closed weakly compact nonempty subset in a strictly convex Kadec Banach space. Further, we prove that the set of all points in E ( G ) such that the best simultaneous approximation problems are not well posed is a u- porous set in E ( G ) when X is a uniformly convex Banach space. In addition, we also investigate the generic property of the ambiguous loci of the best simultaneous approximation.

Abstract:Using the result of the error estimate of the simple extended Newton method established in the present paper for solving abstract inequality systems, we study the error bound property of approximate solutions of abstract inequality systems on Banach spaces with the involved function F being Fréchet differentiable and its derivative F^' satisfying the center-Lipschitz condition (not necessarily the Lipschitz condition) around a point x 0 . Under some mild conditions, we establish results on the existence of the solutions, and the error bound properties for approximate solutions of abstract inequality systems. Applications of these results to finite/infinite systems of inequalities/equalities on Banach spaces are presented and the error bound properties of approximate solutions of finite/infinite systems of inequalities/equalities are also established. Our results extend the corresponding results in [ 3 , 18 , 19 ].

Abstract:We study best approximation problems with nonlinear constraints in Hilbert spaces. The strong "conical hull intersection property" (CHIP) and the "basic constraint qualification" (BCQ) condition are discussed. Best approximations with differentiable constraints and convex constraints are characterized. The analysis generalizes some linearly constrained results of recent works [F. Deutsch, W. Li, and J. Abstract:This paper is concerned with the problem of nonlinear best simultaneous approximations in conditional complete lattice Banach spaces with a strong unit. Characterization results of the best simultaneous approximation from simultaneous suns and suns are established. A counterexample, to which the characterization theorem for convex sets due to Mohebi (Numer. Funct. Anal. Abstract:In 1997, Jost (Calc Var PDE 5:1–19, 1997 ) and Lin (Collection of papers on geometry, analysis and mathematical physics, World Sci. Publ., River Edge, 1997 ), independently proved that every energy minimizing harmonic map from an Alexandrov space with curvature bounded from below to an Alexandrov space with non-positive curvature is locally Hölder continuous. Lin ( 1997 ) proposed an open problem: can the Hölder continuity be improved to Lipschitz continuity? J. Jost also asked a similar problem about Lipschitz regularity of harmonic maps between singular spaces [see page 38 in Jost (in: Jost, Kendall, Mosco, Röckner, Sturm (eds) New directions in Dirichlet forms, International Press, Boston, 1998 )]. The main theorem of this paper gives a complete resolution to it.

Abstract:The convergence of the King-Werner method for finding zeros of nonlinear operators is analyzed. Under the hypothesis that the derivative of f satisfies the radius Lipschitz condition with L-average, the convergence criterion and the Convergence ball for the King-Werner method are given.
