Abstract:This paper studies the deviation inequality for the spectral norm of random matrices with dependent entries. In particular, we consider a random matrix $BA$, where $A$ is a random matrix with independent mean zero subexponential entries, and $B$ is a deterministic matrix. We obtain an exponential inequality for the spectral norm of an $m\times n$ matrix $BA$ using a comparison theorem due to Latala, van Handel and Youssef. Applying this result, we prove an estimate of the smallest singular value of a random subexponential matrix.

Abstract:In this paper, we first obtain a Bernstein type of concentration inequality for stochastic integrals of multivariate point processes under some conditions through the Doléans-Dade exponential formula, and then derive a uniform exponential inequality using a generic chaining argument. As a direct consequence, we obtain an upper bound for a sequence of discrete time martingales indexed by a class of functionals. Finally, we apply the uniform exponential bound to nonparametric maximum likelihood estimators and provide a rate of convergence in terms of Hellinger distance, which is an improvement of earlier work of van de Geer (1995).

Abstract:> The uniqueness and existence of restricted Chebyshev center with respect to arbitrary subset are investigated. The concept of almost Chebyshev sets with respect to bounded subsets is introduced. Abstract:We present some sufficient conditions ensuring the upper semicontinuity and the continuity of the Bregman projection operator ΠCg and the relative projection operator PCg in terms of the D-approximate (weak) compactness for a nonempty closed set C in a Banach space X. We next present certain sufficient conditions as well as equivalent conditions for the convexity of a Chebyshev subset of a Banach space X. Our results extend the corresponding results of [H.H. Bauschke, X.F. Wang, J. Ye and X. M. Yuan, Bregman distances and Chebyshev sets, J. Approx. Theory 159 (2009) 3–25] to infinite dimensional spaces.

Abstract:Strong laws of large numbers for weighted sums of independent random variables are proved for Banach spaces of type p. Chen, Zhu and Fang's (1996) results on real-valued i.i.d. random variables are extended and generalized, and their unsolved problem is answered. Abstract:We prove two-sided Chevet-type inequalities for independent symmetric Weibull random variables with shape parameter $r\in[1,2]$. We apply them to provide two-sided estimates for operator norms from $\ell_p^n$ to $\ell_q^m$ of random matrices $(a_ib_jX_{i,j})_{i\le m, j\le n}$, in the case when $X_{i,j}$'s are iid symmetric Weibull variables with shape parameter $r\in[1,2]$ or when $X$ is an isotropic log-concave unconditional random matrix. We also show how these Chevet-type inequalities imply two-sided bounds for maximal norms from $\ell_p^n$ to $\ell_q^m$ of submatrices of $X$ in both Weibull and log-concave settings.

Abstract:We study a class of stochastic Bernstein polynomials built from order statistics of identically, independently, and uniformly distributed random variables on [0, 1]. We establish a Chebyshev type inequality for the probabilistic convergence of a stochastic Bernstein polynomial sequence to its target function. This is a major improvement of the main result of Wu, Sun, and Ma [Adv. Comput. Math. 38 (2013), no. 1, pp. 187-205]. Moreover, the method we develop here in dealing with varying-weighted sums of dependent random variables is of independent interest.

Abstract:By means of the functional analysis theory, reorder method, mathematical induction and the dimension reduction method, the Chebyshev-Jensen-type inequalities involving the χ-products ⟨·⟩χ and [·]χ are established, and we proved that our main results are the generalizations of the classical Chebyshev inequalities. As applications in probability theory, the discrete with continuous probability inequalities are obtained.

Abstract:In this correspondence, we prove the von Bahr–Esseen moment inequality for pairwise independent random vectors in Hilbert spaces. Our constant in the von Bahr–Esseen moment inequality is better than that obtained for the real-valued random variables by Chen et al. [ The von Bahr–Esseen moment inequality for pairwise independent random variables and applications , J. Math. Anal. Appl. 419 (2014), 1290–1302], and Chen and Sung [ Generalized Marcinkiewicz–Zygmund type inequalities for random variables and applications , J. Math. Inequal. 10 (3) (2016), 837–848]. The result is then applied to obtain mean convergence theorems for triangular arrays of rowwise and pairwise independent random vectors in Hilbert spaces. Some results in the literature are extended.

Abstract:In this paper, we derive new probability bounds for Chebyshev's inequality if the supremum of the probability density function is known. This result holds for one-dimensional or multivariate continuous probability distributions with finite mean and variance (covariance matrix). We also show that the similar result holds for specific discrete probability distributions.

Abstract:The Khinchin-Kahane inequality is a fundamental result in the probability literature, with the most general version to date holding in Banach spaces. Motivated by modern settings and applications, we generalize this inequality to arbitrary metric groups which are abelian. If instead of abelian one assumes the group's metric to be a norm (i.e., $\mathbb{Z}_{>0}$-homogeneous), then we explain how the inequality improves to the same one as in Banach spaces. This occurs via a "transfer principle" that helps carry over questions involving normed metric groups and abelian normed semigroups into the Banach space framework. This principle also extends the notion of the expectation to random variables with values in arbitrary abelian normed metric semigroups $\mathscr{G}$. We provide additional applications, including studying weakly $\ell_p$ $\mathscr{G}$-valued sequences and related Rademacher series. On a related note, we also formulate a "general" Levy inequality, with two features: (i) It subsumes several known variants in the Banach space literature; and (ii) We show the inequality in the minimal framework required to state it: abelian metric groups.

Abstract:This article proposes a co-variance operator for Banach valued random elements using the concept of $U$-statistic. We then study the asymptotic distribution of the proposed co-variance operator along with related large sample properties. Moreover, specifically for Hilbert space valued random elements, the asymptotic distribution of the proposed estimator is derived even for dependent data under some mixing conditions.
