Abstract:IntroductionAdolescent pregnancy is becoming an alarmingly public health problem in China. As the report in 2006 from WHO West Pacific Region Office, the agespecific fertility rate (15-19 years) in China mainland was 12 births per 1,000 women (1). The data from the China National Population Sampling Survey in 2009 showed that age-specific fertility rate of 15-19 years and 19 years old in China mainland was 6.2 and 16.7 birth per thousand respectively(2). According to Almanac of China's Health, the number of induced abortions in China has consistently been around 10 million per year for the past decade, with 20-30% provided for unmarried women (3). Some clinic cases analyses from big cities in China also showed that prevalence of pregnancy and abortion was increasing. The study from Guangzhou city in Guangdong Province indicated that the termination rate of pregnancy in 2nd and 3rd trimester among girls aged at 13-19 years was increased from 4.9 to 16.8 percent during 1984-2003 (4). The rate of repeated and multiple abortions among unmarried young women in a number of large cities ranged from 33.0% to 35.8% (5). However, the actual proportion might larger than this statistical data because some girls did not report their true age for some reasons, which may have caused physical and mental suffering and exposed many young people to the risk of STIs and HIV infection.Adolescent pregnancy and childbearing entail a high risk of maternal death for the adolescent, and the children of young mothers have higher levels of morbidity and mortality (6, 7). These adolescents and their children may experience repercussions in the present, as well as last far into the future. Pregnancy and childbearing may cut short an adolescent's education and threaten her economic prospects, employment opportunities and overall well-being. Adolescent mothers may pass on to their children a legacy of poor health, substandard education and subsistence living, creating a cycle of poverty that is hard to break (8-10).Understanding the risk factors for adolescent pregnancy is an important step in preventing its occurrence and the associated consequences. Previous research has explored a variety of risk factors for adolescent pregnancy, including the role of adverse childhood experience on the risk of adolescent pregnancy. Adverse childhood experiences in this study were specified that the experiences had to have occurred during the person's first 18 years of life.With the exception of a study in 2004, in which researchers found that the odds of having an adolescent pregnancy increased with greater exposure to adverse childhood experiences, even after adjusting for ethnicity, education, and age (11). Some studies in teenage mothers on early family life have found that the early family relationships can provide important information in defining the parenting models to which teenage mothers may have been exposed. These studies have reported that parental divorce and separation, domestic violence, and negative parental relationships may be more prevalent in teenage, as compared to older childbearing (12-15).Meanwhile, drug abuse was a significant problem among the fathers of the teenage antenatal subjects, with half having ever tried drugs and a quarter continuing to use illicit drugs into the pregnancy. Several other studies have also observed this trend. In one U.S. study of 367 teenagers who had fathered a child, 20% of fathers in the setting of teenage pregnancy used drugs compared to 5% of non-father peers (n=997) (16).What's more, existing theoretical frameworks provide a basis for understanding the mechanisms through which different forms of child abuse can lead to adolescent pregnancy. Some studies of pregnant or parenting adolescents from Washington State have demonstrated high levels of self-reported sexual abuse, from 54% among a sample of rural women, to 66% among a sample of 535 pregnant adolescents in a community program (17,18). …
